With awards season all but done and dusted, Oscars. Golden Globes, SAGs, and BAFTAs all having been dutifully doled out over the past few months, this evening saw the BAFTA TV Awards 2025 — hosted by Avengers: Doomsday's Alan Cumming and held at London's Royal Festival Hall — take centre stage for a night of red carpet walking and shiny statue giving. And during a telecast in which the two most nominated shows — Netflix stalker thriller Baby Reindeer and ITV drama Mr Bates Vs The Post Office — took home one award apiece, the likes of Mr Loverman, Shōgun, and Blue Lights all scored big wins in major categories.
On the night, Baby Reindeer's sole win saw Jessica Gunning's turn as Richard Gadd's crazed stalker Martha recognised in the Supporting Actress race, while Mr Bates Vs Post Office, which was elsewhere nominated in both Lead acting categories, took home the coveted accolade for Limited Drama.

Mr Bates vs. the Post Office pulled off a victory over Netflix's Emmy-winning Baby Reindeer at the 2025 BAFTA TV Awards on Sunday. The ITV drama that dominated U.K. ratings last year tells the story of hundreds of innocent sub-postmasters and postmistresses who were wrongly accused of theft, fraud, and false accounting due to a defective It system.
However, it wasn't all bad news for Baby Reindeer. Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG Award winner Jessica Gunning continued her impressive awards streak, scoring Best Supporting Actress, and bringing the limited series’ total to three wins, including writing and directing victories from the BAFTA TV Craft Awards on April 27.
Lennie James beat out the likes of Richard Gadd (Baby Reindeer) and Gary Oldman (Slow Horses) to win Best Actor for Mr Loverman, in which he plays an exuberant, closeted family man who wants to end his marriage and live with his best friend.

While many were occupied by the usual suspects, 2024 was a treat for TV lovers who were paying attention. Yeah, we could have kept rewatching that one show for the ‘tenth-teenth’ time, but suffice it to say, it meant missing out on the next one. Comedy? There was plenty of that this year. Thrillers also found their place. Even a vampire mockumentary died down without proper credit.
These 30 underrated shows from 2024 deserve way more love, and frankly, it’s low-key saddening they didn’t get it. This is why FandomWire has collected them in one place, where readers can choose the genre they can relate to or are in the mood to indulge in. But rest assured that all the shows in the list have the capacity to give you a good time; you just have to make the first plunge.

The fantasy genre is well-suited for long-form storytelling, but there are some TV shows that are still worth watching, even if they're only one season. While fantasy stories often work better when they're lengthy and complex, they have a tendency to be canceled by networks and streaming services. There are many fantasy series that were canceled before they could complete their original plans, with some of these fantasy shows ending on frustrating cliffhangers. This may turn viewers off of incomplete or short fantasy series, but there are a few one-season ones worth watching.
Short fantasy shows can make for great escapes from reality, even if they were initially supposed to continue for longer. Although some series that are canceled are left with unsatisfying endings, others remain watchable despite shortened runs. There are quite a few one-season fantasy series that still hold up, even if they had the potential to go beyond their first outings.

The fantasy-romance TV show My Lady Jane was an immediate hit with critics and audiences when it premiered in June of 2024 on Prime Video, largely thanks to its sense of humor. Based on the book by Jodi Meadows, Brodi Ashton, and Cynthia Hand, My Lady Jane took the best parts of period romances, speculative fiction, and comedy and combined them into one of the freshest takes on all three genres that audiences have seen in years. The comedic timing of the tremendous cast and the sharp writing make it one of the funniest shows of 2024.
Led by Emily Bader and Edward Bluemel as Jane Grey and Guildford Dudley, My Lady Jane relied on the central pairs' chemistry, and critics and audiences were not disappointed. The TV industry as of late has seen many cancellations when a show is not immediately, massively successful, resulting in several great fantasy TV shows that did not get to finish their original story plan. The collective of fantasy TV shows Netflix canceled too soon and Disney+ shows that were prematurely canceled is demonstrative of how the streaming era has not been kind to new shows, especially fantasy. Several of these shows garnered strong reviews, but not the groundbreaking kind they needed to be renewed.
Fantasy TV is expensive, leading to many shows being canceled because streaming services don't want to further invest when they aren't guaranteed a return. External circumstances are partially to blame; the pandemic disrupted the industry, while numerous TV shows were also canceled during the 2023 writers' strikes. However, fantasy shows that began and ended just in 2024 prove the industry's unwillingness to bet on stories that might need more time to flourish.

Fantasy can take on many forms, and the innovative TV shows that have populated screens throughout the 2020s are proof that the speculative fiction genre is alive and well. Additionally, the diversity of these series demonstrates how expansive fantasy is and that there are a variety of niches it can occupy. This means that there's likely a fantasy TV show out there that will satisfy any viewer and take their imagination to someplace magical. One of the reasons fantasy is so strong today is because of the availability of better technology that brings the mystical elements to life.
Some of the best period romance TV shows of the 2020s have overlapped with the fantasy genre, and combining aspects of multiple story types is common practice for fantasy. While the outlandish realms and intricate world-building are often what initially draw audiences to these series, it's the characters that make viewers want to keep watching.

Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin expresses his disappointment with the cancelation of My Lady Jane.
Per George R.R. "Small wonder, then, that I really enjoyed My Lady Jane, a clever and original historical fantasy on Amazon Prime, set in an England full of witches and shapechangers, where Jane lasts more than nine days."

My Lady Jane star Edward Bluemel responds to George R.R. Martin's surprising support of the canceled Prime Video series. The 2024 show retold the life of the titular short-lived English monarch in a more fantastical reality amid the ascendancy crisis that led to her own experience on the throne. Bluemel portrayed Lord Guildford Dudley, Lady Jane Grey's lover and one of the shape-shifting Ethians who find themselves persecuted by the powerless Verity ruling class. My Lady Jane was canceled after one season.

My Lady Jane has prompted a massive campaign for its renewal. My Lady Jane is a Prime Video historical fantasy series that tells the story of Lady Jane Grey and her husband Guildford, who have to fight against jealous criminals after Jane is unexpectedly crowned queen. My Lady Jane season 1 was released in June of this year and ran for a single, eight-episode season. Its cast features Emily Bader, Edward Bluemel, Anna Chancellor, Rob Brydon, Kate O'Flynn, Henry Ashton, Dominic Cooper, and Oliver Chris.
Now, a Change.org petition demands My Lady Jane be brought back for season 2. This petition, urging Prime Video to renew the series, has over 55,000 signatures at the time of writing. The petition stated the demands clearly, saying, "We are calling upon Amazon Prime to listen to the voices of fans around the globe and confirm the renewal of 'My Lady Jane' for a second season.

Queen Mary remains on the throne at the end of My Lady Jane season 1, and Amazon's cancelation ensures we won't see her downfall. The lack of closure for characters like Queen Mary highlights the risk of leaving a story unfinished for potential future seasons. Queen Mary's comeuppance is one of the most satisfying parts of the book, so it's a shame My Lady Jane will never adapt it.
My Lady Jane is officially not returning for season 2, and I can't believe the Amazon series will never get the chance to adapt the most satisfying part of the book. My Lady Jane debuted on Prime Video on June 27, introducing viewers to a reimagined and magical version of Lady Jane Grey's history. Like the book it's based on, the Amazon series puts a feminist spin on Jane's story. It also rewrites the religious tensions of the time period as a conflict between magic and non-magic folk.

My Lady Jane will not return for a second season. Prime Video has cancelled the historical fiction series after eight episodes. The entire first season was released by the streamer on June 27th.
The series is a radical retelling of English royal history. In this version, King Henry VIII's son Edward does not die of tuberculosis, Lady Jane Grey is not beheaded, and neither is her rascal husband Guildford. It looks like the damsel is in distress again as Prime Video has decided not to renew its historical fantasy rom-com drama series My Lady Jane for a second season. Season 1 of My Lady Jane was released with all of its episodes and little to no promotion on Prime Video on June 27, and while the streaming platform has opted not to continue the series, the fans have already started a petition to save the series.
Based on a 2016 novel of the same name by authors Jodi Meadows, Brodi Ashton, and Cynthia Hand, the reimagining of Lady Jane Grey is adapted for television by Gemma Burgess, who also serves as co-showrunner with Meredith Glynn.

Prime Video will be pulling the plug on My Lady Jane. The decision comes a matter of weeks after all episodes debuted simultaneously on the streaming platform.

My Lady Jane has been thrown off the throne — for good.

Like the real Jane Grey, the reign of My Lady Jane turned out to be a short one.
Amazon’s Prime Video has canceled the period drama, which combined romance and alternate-world fantasy. The cancellation comes about seven weeks after Prime Video released all eight episodes of the show’s first (and now only) season.
My Lady Jane, based on a novel by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows, is set in a 16th century England where humans co-exist with shape-shifters who can take the form of either people or animals. Jane Grey (Emily Bader) is an ordinary human, known as a Verity, who becomes sympathetic to the oppressed shape-shifters, known as Ethians — which will become a problem for the ruling class as Jane rises to power.
Edward Bluemel, Rob Brydon, Dominic Cooper, Anna Chancellor, Jordan Peters, Kate O’Flynn, Henry Ashton, Jim Broadbent and Ollie Chris (who narrates) star alongside Bader.

Exclusive: Prime Video has opted not to renew My Lady Jane for a second season. The news comes seven weeks after all eight episodes from the show’s first season were binge released with little promotion June 27.
The news is not entirely surprising. Creatively, My Lady Jane has done well. Despite taking a very big swing with a premise that crosses genres that don’t normally co-exist — historical romance, fantasy, adventure, comedy and farce — it has been among the best reviewed new series this year. But it didn’t find a broad enough audience, never landing on Nielsen’s Top 10 weekly streaming rankings for originals.
Created by Gemma Burgess based on the 2016 YA historical fiction novels, My Lady Jane takes an alt-history approach to one of England’s monarchs with the shortest rule, the 16th century Lady Jane Grey, aka the Nine Days Queen. Mixing palace intrigue with a fantastical take on class,...

Period romance TV shows based on classic literature use costuming, archaic language, and historical backdrop to provide engaging escapism. Chemistry between leads and incorporation of historical events create compelling storytelling in period romance series like "My Lady Jane" and "The Spanish Princess." Love, conflict, and societal change are explored in romantic period dramas like "Poldark" and "The Tudors," offering a mix of history and love stories.
Romance isn't always taken seriously as a genre, but the period piece TV shows that tell sweeping love stories for the ages are some of the most highly regarded on television. This is because so many period romance series are based on seminal works of classic literature. The costuming, archaic language, and rules of propriety strongly differ from how love and courtship unfold today. This allows the audience to engage in an attractive form of escapism while watching. My Lady Jane is a historical fantasy series set in 16th-century England, focusing on Lady Jane Grey and Mary Tudor, blending historical facts with YA fantasy storytelling. Based on the novel The Orphan Queen, the show features supernatural elements like shapeshifting creatures and explores themes of female empowerment and avoiding arranged marriages. While the series contains historical characters and events, it diverges from reality with the introduction of fictional Ethians and altered storylines, such as Jane Grey's escape from her loveless marriage.

In the 16th century, Lady Jane Grey was briefly queen of England but met a tragic fate when, just nine days after taking the throne, she was overthrown and later executed at the age of 16. But what if the story didn’t have to end that way? The new Prime Video series My Lady Jane explores what could have been if Jane’s reign continued and she lived to rule another day, with more than a few unexpected twists.
In this reimagining, England is divided not only politically but also between regular humans and a people called the Ethians, who have the remarkable ability to shapeshift into animals. Jane herself comes from a noble family but dreams of a life outside the strict rules of her time. That seems impossible when her ambitious mother betrothes her to a man against her will. Most movies and shows about the history of humankind are not accurate. Facts and events are distorted and rearranged to elicit certain emotional responses that align with the biases of the director or showrunner in question. And history buffs just love to nitpick them to hell, especially if said biases are a tad bit toxic in nature. But I think the subgenre that really drives them nuts is the alternate fantasy-history subgenre. For example, there’s Watchmen, which reimagined everything from the Cold War to the Vietnam War. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter turned the famous President into a killer of bloodsuckers. The X-Men films, MonsterVerse films, MCU films, Back to the Future films, and the Bill & Ted films have toyed with many historical figures. Shows like Fallout and Renegade Nell have done the same on the small screen. And, now, My Lady Jane has joined this illustrious list by...

It’s probably fair to say that every single drama about the Tudor dynasty would like you to know it’s not like all those other dramas about the Tudor dynasty. This one is steamier, or more emotionally intimate; that one features nontraditional casting or focuses on a less famous figure. So I’ll say this for Prime Video’s My Lady Jane: This one, really and truly, is not like the others. Sure, there are crowns and pretty ballgowns and cool sword fights and castles; as ever, the plot hinges on noble conspiracies and threats of beheading. But it also features a twist that sends it careening so far away from established reality, one wonders why it pretends to be about the Tudors at all.

Emily Bader plays Lady Jane Gray in My Lady Jane for Amazon Prime Video, here’s the trailer for the new show.
Historical swashbucklers with female leading roles are becoming a regular feature, what with the success of Netflix’s Damsel and the Enola Holmes series, as well as Sally Wainwright’s wonderful Renegade Nell on Disney+.
The latest to hit the market is My Lady Jane, which comes to Amazon’s Prime Video service next month.
The synopsis reads as follows:
Gird your loins for the tragic tale of Lady Jane Grey, the young Tudor noblewoman who was Queen of England for nine days and then beheaded in 1553… F*ck that. We’re retelling history the way it should have happened: the damsel in distress saves herself. This is an epic tale of true love and high adventure set in an alt-universe of action, history, fantasy, comedy, romance, and rompy-pompy.

"What if history were different?!" Amazon's Prime Video has revealed the official trailer for a series titled My Lady Jane, arriving for streaming in June this summer. It's yet another of these spins on the damsel in distress trope by turning the ladies into the badass heroines who do the rescuing instead of being the one rescued (also see: Netflix's Damsel). History's most tragic heroines but re-imagined with an uplifting twist: the damsel in distress saves herself - and then the kingdom. This is adapted from the book of the same name about "The Lady Janies". Emily Bader stars as Lady Jane Grey, with an ensemble cast featuring Edward Bluemel, Jordan Peters, Anna Chancellor, Dominic Cooper, Kate O'Flynn, Rob Brydon, Abbie Hern, Isabella Brownson, Will Keen. Prime Video has released the first photos from My Lady Jane, the quick-witted romantic new series set in an alt-fantasy Tudor world. The series will premiere exclusively on Prime Video on Thursday, June 27, in more than 240 countries and territories around the world.
Inspired by the best-selling book, My Lady Jane is a radical retelling of English royal history, in which King Henry VIII’s son Edward does not die of tuberculosis, Lady Jane Grey is not beheaded, and neither is her rascal of a husband, Guildford.
At the center of this rollicking new series is the brilliant and headstrong Jane, who is unexpectedly crowned queen overnight and finds herself the target of nefarious villains coming for the crown (and her head)… My Lady Jane is an epic tale of true love and high adventure, where the damsel in distress saves herself, her true love, and then the Kingdom.
