Kamau Bilal's father was born in St.Louis and he himself grew up in Columbia, Missouri.He attended Tv and radio classes at Webster University nearby back in his father's hometown but did not make it into their film program.He used the editing skills he had learned at Webster toward video production and later making commercials.Finally, he became a professor at the University of Missouri.
