Conclave screenwriter Peter Straughan is now an Academy Award winner. The honor comes after Straughan picked up wins at the BAFTAs, Golden Globes, and Critics' Choice Awards.
At the Academy Awards on Sunday night, Straughan was announced as the winner for Best Adapted Screenplay. This is the second nomination for the writer, but the first time he has picked up the win. He was nominated for the 2011 film Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, which managed to get him a win at the BAFTAs and other awards shows, but he came up short at the Oscars. The screenwriter is now getting his flowers, and it is clear from his Oscar win acceptance speech how proud he feels to have gotten the honor.

Best Director gets more attention at the Oscars, but this millennium has shown the writing categories are potentially more important. In the past 15 years Argo (2012), Green Book (2018), and Coda (2021) won Best Picture without directing noms — but no film since Titanic (1997) has won without a writing nom. That could be good news for many of this year's nominees for Best Adapted Screenplay. Four of the five are also up for the top prize. Here is our breakdown of the race as it stands today.

Based on Elijah Wald’s hour-by-hour countdown Dylan Goes Electric!, James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown is a quirky, engaging and (thankfully) never reverential biopic that tracks the journey of Bob Dylan (Timothée Chalamet) from acoustic folk to rock amplification. Its main concern is music and mimesis: to showcase Chalamet performing the Dylan songbook with a fidelity to the original beyond the vocal range of the lip-synching Larry Parks in The Jolson Story (1946) or Rami Malek in Bohemian Rhapsody (2018).
The imitations are all, as it were, pitch perfect, but they tend to submerge the political dimension to Dylan’s decision to crank up the volume at the Newport Folk Festival on July 25, 1965. The gesture was not about electricity but autonomy, the desire of the artist to free himself from the restrictive meters and themes of an agit-prop folk tradition. Heard retrospectively, “It Ain’t Me Babe” is no longer just...

Timothée Chalamet opened up about how playing Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown” influenced his own experience with fame and activism, saying that he learned from the folk legend to “be wary of any savior-like figures.”
During a packed press conference at Berlin Film Festival on Friday, Chalamet was asked about how Dylan — who penned several iconic protest songs — has influenced his view on political issues like war and the rise of the far-right. Though the moderator redirected the question to the film as “opposed to a personal political point of view,” Chalamet said: “I don’t think that’s necessarily a political question.”
He continued, “I think it’s in the nature of his music, the warnings against cult-like figures. And I think that Bob was very true to — I won’t speak for him because he’s alive and well in Malibu — but my interpretation is just be...

Timothée Chalamet didn’t even know if “A Complete Unknown” would ever get made.
The actor, who is now Oscar-nominated for portraying Bob Dylan in the biopic, told W that he thought the film was “cursed” because of its production delays. The feature was originally titled “Going Electric,” and was adapted from Elijah Wald’s 2015 biography “Dylan Goes Electric.” Writer/director James Mangold announced the film in 2020 — a bad time to start production — and the feature was shelved amid the Covid-19 pandemic. It was released in 2024.
“Originally, I thought I had no time to prepare, but there were delays,” Chalamet said for W’s Directors Issue alongside his “Dune” auteur Denis Villeneuve and David Lynch’s original Paul Atreides, Kyle MacLachlan. “I began to think the film was cursed, but the five years it took to get the cast and movie finally together ended up being a good thing.”

For James Mangold, Thursday morning was like any other, aside from the fact he woke up to three Academy Award nominations for his Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown — for Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay (shared with cowriter Jay Cocks) and Best Picture. All things considered, not too shabby. And while the showing was hardly shocking, the filmmaker tells Gold Derby, “I’ve been doing this a long time, and you learn very well not to expect anything. Just be open and let it happen. Obviously the results are thrilling.”

The 2025 finalists for the USC Libraries Scripter Awards have been announced by the USC Libraries. The annual event is held in honor of the writers of the year’s most accomplished film and episodic series adaptations, as well as the authors of the works on which they are based.

Warning: This article contains Spoilers for A Complete Unknown!
James Mangold’s hit musical biopic A Complete Unknown tells the legendary story of Bob Dylan’s transformation from niche folk poet to mainstream rock star in the mid-1960s. In doing so, it introduces other music legends like Pete Seeger, Joan Baez and Johnny Cash to a whole new generation of Dylan fans by characterizing them as stepping stones on the singer’s journey to stardom.
The movie draws extensively from Elijah Wald’s non-fiction book Dylan Goes Electric! as well as other real-world sources, including Dylan’s actual written correspondence with Johnny Cash.
The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has unveiled its nominees for the 2025 WGA Awards, highlighting a mix of familiar Oscar frontrunners, unexpected entries, and the creative reshuffling prompted by ineligible contenders.
Sean Baker’s critically acclaimed “Anora” is leading the original screenplay list, which many consider the Oscar frontrunner in this category. Another strong contender is Jesse Eisenberg’s “A Real Pain,” a personal, semi-autobiographical drama that has been a critical favorite this season.
The inclusion of Justin Kuritzkes’ “Challengers” — a romantic sports drama starring Zendaya — is significant. After its high-profile shutout at the BAFTA Awards, this nomination could rejuvenate its awards season momentum. Adding variety to the category is Alex Garland’s bold post-apocalyptic thriller, “Civil War,” and Megan Park’s sweet yet irreverent comedy, “My Old Ass.” Park, who won praise for her directorial debut “The Fallout,” is also a DGA nominee for first-time director.

There’s a priceless moment early in “A Complete Unknown” when folk icon Pete Seeger returns to the cabin where he lives with his family after offering a young singer named Bob Dylan a place to sleep for the night. Seeger shows Dylan around the house, proudly displaying the modern amenities of the rustic abode. But when he talks about how the wondrous new composting toilet doesn’t even stink, his kids chime in from the next room: Yes, Dad, it does!
The moment is quintessential Pete Seeger, a man who wore the same gentle smile whether he was leading sing-alongs or facing adversity that included a lengthy period in the 1950s where he was blacklisted after being at the height of his popularity with the folk group The Weavers. Seeger’s essential goodness always stood out, wrote Elijah Wald in “Dylan Goes Electric!,” the book that served as the inspiration for “A Complete Unknown.

Here’s the thing. James Mangold completely understands why Bob Dylan has not seen “A Complete Unknown” and may never see it. And it’s not personal. As Mangold reveals, “I’m told by his team management team that he’s never even seen the other movies that have been made about him, documentary or otherwise. Even ones where he’s participated in.” Why would this case be any different?

In a year when the Amy Winehouse movie Back to Black showed just how wretched musical biopics can sometimes be, most critics and ticket-buyers seem pleased with James Mangold’s look at Bob Dylan’s early years in A Complete Unknown. The project is nothing but a big swing, daring to take on one of the biggest myths of 20th century culture — a transformative artist who sold 125 million albums, has won Grammys, an Oscar, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Nobel Prize in Literature, the only musician ever to do so. (Apologies to Heinrich Böll, singing in the shower does not count.) You would think that the most ardent Dylan fans would be celebrating.
However, the Timothée Chalamet–led picture, written by Mangold and Jay Cocks, is not a court document. There are tweaks to the historical record from pretty much the first frame. The young Minnesotan Robert Zimmerman...

Elijah Wald, author of the book that A Complete Unknown was based on, provides a guide to the factuality of various scenes from the movie.
Wald, who wrote the 2015 book Dylan Goes Electric! Newport, Seeger, Dylan, and the Night That Split the Sixties that inspired A Complete Unknown, according to a credit at the beginning of the film, enjoyed the Bob Dylan biopic that took from his book. The film is surprisingly accurate to the true story of Dylan's rise to fame, but that doesn't mean that director James Mangold didn't take liberties. Wald provides a guide to the truth--and fiction--as sourced from Variety. Mangold said that the film was “not a Wikipedia entry” and that he didn't feel the need to always be loyal to the facts--he wasn't making a documentary, after all. However, he did take a lot, not only from Wald's book but from lengthy discussions with Bob Dylan himself.

Timothée Chalamet’s turn as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown earned praise from critics, including Rolling Stone’s David Fear, but like any biopic, some details and facts get left out or rearranged. The notoriously mercurial Dylan, who had input in the James Mangold biopic, even slipped a made-up scene into the movie.
The movie is based on the 2015 book Dylan Goes Electric!, which documents Dylan’s pivotal 1965 performance at the Newport Folk Festival. His plugged-in performance of “Like A Rolling Stone” was controversial among festival attendees, who expected an acoustic set.

Plot: Four years in the life of Bob Dylan (Timothee Chalamet), from his discovery by Pete Seeger (Edward Norton) through his eventual rise to fame as a folk singer, through his controversial decision to go electric on the eve of the 1965 Newport Folk Festival.
Review: It’s hard to accurately sum up just how much of a profound effect Bob Dylan had on pop culture. One of the greatest songwriters of all time, for sixty years now, Dylan’s been sitting at the top of the pantheon of music greats, but oddly enough, outside of Todd Haynes’s impressionistic ode to his legend – I’m Not There, and a series of documentaries by Martin Scorsese, no one’s ever tried to tell his story as a traditional biopic until now. Sporting an impeccably assembled cast, James Mangold’s made an excellent companion piece to his own Walk the Line in that...

“How does it feel?” is one way by which to measure a movie. But if you’ve seen “A Complete Unknown,” the Bob Dylan biopic that opened on Christmas Day, you may have left the theater singing to yourself (to the tune of “Like a Rolling Stone”): How much is reeeaaallll?
The short response is: A lot. But the long answer involves acknowledging director James Mangold’s film taking liberties in terms of a condensation of timelines, the conjoining of separate incidents, fictional character names in a couple of cases, and moments of sheer imagination and fictionalization. It’s certainly possible to enjoy “A Complete Unknown” without stressing too much over which parts are fact and which are fanciful. But for those who want to take a deep dive into how much the movie aligns with the known historical record, we looked to several Dylan experts to help sort it out.

James Mangold is entering the awards race at the perfect time with A Complete Unknown. The biopic, which follows the early stages of Bob Dylan’s career, has been making awards noise and is set to impress audiences this Christmas. Ahead of the film’s release, we had the chance to participate in a press conference with stars Timothée Chalamet, Monica Barbaro, Edward Norton, and more.
In my review of A Complete Unknown, I wrote that Chalamet blew me away by embodying the musical icon. Mangold crafted the film to make fans of Dylan happy while also introducing him to a new generation. Toss in the stunning cinematography, incredible ensemble, and great song selections, and A Complete Unknown was fantastic.

The five years between Bob Dylan’s arrival in New York and his performance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival marked a huge shift in popular culture. It wasn’t just the songs Dylan wrote and performed. The politics he espoused, relationships he formed, causes he endorsed, even the clothes he wore were critiqued and copied by a growing number of acolytes and fans. Dylan helped shape the culture in ways few other artists could match. Based in part on Elijah Wald’s book Dylan Goes Electric!, director James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown follows Dylan as he finds and develops a voice and […]
