'Seneca' with John Malkovich in Ancient Rome Sets Release
Image
When considering who could play an ancient Roman philosopher, few great actors come to mind more quickly than John Malkovich. He has the ability to easily slide into regal, careful, sometimes pompous, sometimes painfully self-aware performances befitting of archaic geniuses. From the trailer and images, it looks like he's bringing all that to his portrayal of the eponymous stoic in the film Seneca (also known as Seneca: On the Creation of Earthquakes). Freestyle Digital Media, the digital film distribution division of Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group, acquired the VOD rights to the historical drama, also featuring Geraldine Chaplin and Tom Xander. While it was filmed years ago, it will finally be available in North America on digital platforms, cable, and satellite platforms, as well as on DVD, starting April 8, 2025. Watch the trailer below:

Seneca also stars Tom Xander (‘Nero’), Geraldine Chaplin (‘Cecelia’), Mary-Louise Parker (‘Agrippina’), and the late, great...

Besides launching The Mage 2, 852 Films also unveiled Macao Redux, with Jordan Gertner (The Killer Inside Me) set to direct. The film follows four friends — Z, a magician; Jade, an actress; Marco, a tech wizard; and Hazel,...

Sports Team Reveal Origins of New Track “I’m in Love (Subaru)”: Exclusive
Image
Welcome back to Origins, our recurring series that gives artists a space to break down everything that went into their latest release. Today, the British alternative rock group Sports Team dig into the themes behind the song and video for “I’m in Love (Subaru).”

There aren’t many songs inspired by a Subaru Impreza. In fact, Sports Team might have the only one.

The British group returns today with “I’m in Love (Subaru),” the lead single from their forthcoming third album, Boys These Days (out February 28th), and a love letter to — you guessed it — a red Subaru Impreza. Why that specific car, you might ask? For vocalist Rob Knaggs, it represents an unattainable ideal; a shiny car for a shiny, impenetrable life.

Subarus evoke safety and security, and in “I’m in Love (Subaru),” that manifests in a bright, ’80s-inspired sound that is only a few degrees...

Miley Cyrus Admits The Malibu House She And Ex Liam Hemsworth Lost To Devastating Wildfires ‘Had So Much Magic To It’
Image
Miley Cyrus spoke about the “magic” Malibu house she shared with ex-husband Liam Hemsworth in her new “Used to Be Young” TikTok series.

The singer and Hemsworth — who tied the knot in December 2018 after years of dating, but split less than a year after the ceremony — lost their home in the devastating wildfires in 2018.

Cyrus referenced the house in her track “Flowers”, that was released earlier this year.

While speaking about her debut 2007 album, Meet Miley Cyrus, in the TikTok clip, the musician shared how producer Matthew Wilder had been living in the home at the time.

She recalled, “The Meet Miley Cyrus record was really where I started writing my own songs as a solo artist.

“I was working with a producer in Malibu that lived in a house in Ramirez Canyon, which I would’ve never known 15 years later I would be living in that house, which would eventually burn down.

‘Seneca — On the Creation of Earthquakes’ Review: John Malkovich Travels Back to Nero’s Rome in Misconceived Historical Fantasy
Image
There is one thing to be said for Seneca — On the Creation of Earthquakes, which has its world premiere in Berlin this week. It may be the first major film set in ancient Rome in a couple of decades. But those who are hoping for a vivid adventure like Gladiator or Spartacus or even a campy hoot like Quo Vadis will be sorely disappointed by this bizarre effort to create a historical fantasia. John Malkovich has a rare starring role and acquits himself solidly enough. But it is harder to understand what motivated director Robert Schwentke, who has some successful films to his credit (The Time Traveler’s Wife, Red, the Divergent series) but adds no luster to his resume with this head-scratcher.

Schwentke was born in Germany but has made most of his films in Hollywood. This German-financed effort was filmed primarily in Morocco and showcases a cast from all over the world,...

Berlinale-Bound ‘Seneca,’ Starring John Malkovich, Picked Up by Picture Tree Intl., Teaser Debuts (Exclusive)
Image
Berlin-based sales company Picture Tree Intl. has boarded Robert Schwentke’s historical drama “Seneca – On the Creation of Earthquakes,” which has its world premiere in the Berlinale Special Gala section of the Berlin Film Festival. The teaser (below) for the film, which stars John Malkovich, Geraldine Chaplin, Tom Xander, “Dark’s” Louis Hofmann and Mary-Louise Parker, has been released.

The movie is a look at the relationship between Seneca and Nero, the infamous Roman Emperor he mentored since childhood, and who accused him of plotting his assassination.

As the foster father and mastermind of Nero, Seneca is instrumental in the rise of the self-indulgent young tyrant. The philosopher, known for his great speeches on renunciation and clemency, is himself one of the richest men in ancient Rome. But when one day the student tires of his teacher, Nero orders Seneca to kill himself. Is the latter ready for an honorable suicide,...

Nicolas Cage at an event for Drive Angry (2011)
Nicolas Cage is a Bored Peeping Tom in VOD Bait ‘Looking Glass’ — Review
Nicolas Cage at an event for Drive Angry (2011)
Nicolas Cage stumbles through “Looking Glass” wearing an awkward goatee and a dazed expression, so disinterested in this subpar, proto-Hitchcockian thriller he seems as though he might wander out of frame at any moment. This is the cross the actor has to bear in this rather peculiar stage of his career, when his currency as a VOD star mandates his output more than anything else. At times, a modern-day Cage vehicle can elevate campy material to transcendental silliness; here, he just sags into the whole mediocre package.

As “Looking Glass” hits a few theaters and digital markets in mid-February, it’s already the third Cage performance in circulation this year, which started out on a high note: In Sundance sensation “Mandy” (which has yet to land U.S. distribution), Cage delivers a terrifically unhinged performance as a furious logger seeking revenge for the murder of his wife in a mesmerizing,...

Review: ‘Looking Glass’ is a Laboriously Generic Thriller
I can’t stop going back to an old Variety report from 2016 that contained a Braxton Pope quote about producing Looking Glass as what was then to be music video director Dori Oskowitz’s feature length debut. He spoke about how excited he was to partner with the artist in bringing a “remarkable story of voyeurism and grief to the screen.” I read that statement and wonder where it all could have gone wrong since the finished piece now directed by Tim Hunter from a script solely credited to Jerry Rapp (Matthew Wilder was also involved at one point) fails to fulfill its promise. Voyeurism and grief are both included, but neither is meaningful in the context of what proves little more than a generic thriller built from confusion.

Grief arrives with the tragic off-screen death of Ray (Nicolas Cage) and Maggie’s (Robin Tunney) young daughter. We see glimpses...

Dog Eat Dog Review
Dog Eat Dog aims to be your next pulpy criminal obsession, but falls short upon feeling forced into underworld seediness. There’s inherent fun thanks to magnificent character actors like Nicolas Cage and Willem Dafoe, yet director Paul Schrader struggles to temper depravity with meaning. Audiences find themselves stuck in a cyclical circle of prisoner’s lament, where the worst of the worst happens just because. Look no farther than Schrader’s introduction – the double murder of a mother and her moody teen. Why? “Because That’S The Kind Of Movie This Is, Motherf(#Ker” is what Schrader’s tone conveys – sometimes for the best, but never without pause.

Nic Cage stars as Troy Cameron, a low-budget criminal who’s sick of tiny scores. After yet another good-enough win, he’s offered a $750K payday by Grecco The Greek (Paul Schrader). The job is simple – kidnap a baby until the father pays his debts,...

Dog Eat Dog trailer, starring Nicolas Cage and Willem Dafoe
Joseph Baxter Sep 20, 2016

Nicolas Cage and Willem Dafoe star in Paul Schrader's new movie, Dog Eat Dog. Here's the trailer...

Based on the 1995 novel of the same name by real-life ex-criminal Edward Bunker, the Cleveland-set Dog Eat Dog centres on utterly irredeemable ne’er-do-well ex-cons Troy (Nicolas Cage), Mad Dog (Willem Dafoe) and their heavy hitter Diesel (The Walking Dead's Christopher Matthew Cook) who take on the terrible task of kidnapping a dangerous gangster’s one-year-old baby! However, unlike with Cage’s signature (also ex-con) role in the Coen Brothers’ Raising Arizona, said infant abduction does not at all go as planned, resulting in our repugnant protagonists going on the run from the law and from the gangster baby-daddy in question. What ensues is a wanton spree of brutal bloodletting and body-dropping.

In the director’s chair for Dog Eat Dog (that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival) is Paul Schrader,...

[Cannes Review] Dog Eat Dog
Paul Schrader might want to consider expanding his thematic scope a little. Decade after decade, film after film, regardless of whether he’s been writing scripts for others (Martin Scorsese, first and foremost), or sitting in the director’s chair himself, the erstwhile Calvinist has come back to the theme of redemption with obstinate persistence. His protagonists are almost always men, they’re almost always amoral sinners of some ilk or other, and they almost always yearn to break out of the wicked, vicious cycles on which their lives have been relentlessly spinning. Not an unfruitful theme by any means, considering it has given rise to many a masterpiece across the history of cinema – of all arts, really – but Dog Eat Dog suggests that, as far his own filmmaking is concerned, Schrader may have exhausted its potential.

Things actually look promising at first. Taking the trashy gusto exhibited in The Canyons to whole new extremes,...

Dog Eat Dog review – Willem Dafoe is magnificently needy in Paul Schrader's tasty thriller
Adapted from Ed Bunker’s cult novel, Schrader’s thriller about three ex-cons is his best work in years – though he should probably have avoided casting himself

In 1992, Quentin Tarantino revealed his love for cult crime author Edward Bunker by casting him as Mr Blue in Reservoir Dogs; the former San Quentin prison inmate and reformed armed robber whose hardboiled genre fiction was unrivalled in its authenticity. Three years later, and benefitting from a colossal career-boost, Bunker published a new novel entitled Dog Eat Dog, a nod to Tarantino’s debut. Paul Schrader has now filmed it, shifting the scene from Los Angeles to Cleveland, and working from an adaptation by screenwriter Matthew Wilder.

It’s the right director for the right project and the result is Schrader’s best for years: a lairy, nasty, tasty crime thriller built on black-comic chaos. Dog Eat Dog isn’t perfect: the opening scene could have been cut,...

Presenting Seyfried as 'Lovelace'
Much as there are competing Alfred Hitchcock flicks, there are also competing Linda Lovelace flicks. Both Lovelace and Inferno: A Linda Lovelace Story are racing down the stretch toward the finish line, but it appears Lovelace has pulled ahead...no pun intended.

Rob Epstein and Jerry Friedman's Lovelace is now officially categorized by IMDb as being in post-production, whereas Matthew Wilder's Inferno is still in that ugly netherworld known as pre-production (often referred to as "so, are we gonna make this movie or what?").

Lovelace recently solidified its lead in what we at Planet Fury like to call the Lovelace Sweepstakes by releasing its first poster, giving us a look at Amanda Seyfried in her Linda Lovelace makeup, which appears to be just blue eye shadow, pink lipstick and rouge (I'm guessing this performance will be all about costume, attitude and Seyfried's smoldering saucer-size eyes).

For comparison's sake, and...

Eric Bana Departs ‘Elvis & Nixon’; Malin Akerman Raises Skepticism Over ‘Inferno’
It’s a bad day for historical pieces, with THR informing us that Eric Bana‘s left Elvis & Nixon, a dramedy that’s will mark the directorial debut of Cary Elwes. Other than his to-the-point note of “I’m no longer attached,” we don’t know what exactly made the decision go through; I’d guess scheduling is only the root cause, seeing as he’s already attached himself in an executive producer capacity. A shame — especially when you hear Bana does a great impersonation of The King, and I’d kill to see it — but I’m just hoping this can go forward with another top choice in the blue suede shoes.

Danny Huston will still appear in the other titular role, while Kevin Connolly (Entourage) and Luke Wilson were recently wrangled to take on minor parts. Written by Elwes and Hanala & Joey Sagal, Elvis & Nixon revolves around the...

Why? Lindsay Lohan in ‘Early Talks’ to Play Liz Taylor in Lifetime Movie
It seems as if Lindsay Lohan might be most comfortable playing anyone but herself. Lohan has constantly imitated Marilyn Monroe in photo shoots over the years, and the actress was long attached to Matthew Wilder’s Linda Lovelace biopic, Inferno: A Linda Lovelace Story. The film seemed stalled out due to the Lohan commitments that could never come to fruition. Lohan was dropped from the project in November of 2010, and Malin Ackerman stepped in to the role shortly after. So, if you can’t be Marilyn and you can’t be Lovelace, who can Lohan be? If a report from Deadline Hampstead is to be believed, Elizabeth Taylor. I’m sorry, what? The outlet reports, quite bizarrely, that Lohan is “in early talks for the female lead in Lifetime’s original movie Elizabeth & Richard: A Love Story, chronicling the enduring love of movie icons Taylor and Richard Burton, whose fiery romance was the most notorious, publicized...

‘Inferno: A Linda Lovelace Story’ Casts Adam Goldberg
Inferno: A Linda Lovelace Story, one of two competing biopics about the legendary and controversial pornographic actress, is in final talks to add Adam Goldberg (Zodiac, Dazed and Confused). Goldberg would play fellow porn actor Harry Reems in the film. Matthew Wilder (Your Name Here) has been tapped to write and direct.

Linda Lovelace was arguably the most famous porn actress of the ’70s, a time when pornographic films were still seen as legitimate art. She only made a handful of pornographic films before quitting the industry and divorcing her husband, Chuck Traynor. Malin Akerman (Watchmen) will play Linda Lovelace in the film.

Inferno will be based on “Ordeal: An Autobiography”, the controversial book Lovelace wrote with Mike McGrady. In the book, Lovelace claimed that Traynor, who will be played by Matt Dillon in the movie, beat her and held a gun ...

Casting News: Demi Moore, Adam Brody and More Join Competing Lovelace Biopics; Amanda Seyfried and Taylor Swift Offered Les Misérables
For a while, it seemed that, of the two planned biopics about the late 1970's porn star Linda Lovelace, the Amanda Seyfried-starring Lovelace was getting the most traction. Now it looks like the other Lovelace biopic, Inferno: a Linda Lovelace Story starring Malin Akerman (Watchmen) in the lead role, is finally putting together its cast as well.

So let's step back for a moment for Lovelace, which has also announced some new cast members. Deadline reports that Demi Moore, Eric Roberts and Adam Brody have all joined the cast. Moore will play feminist author Gloria Steinem, while Roberts is playing lie detector expert Nat Laurendi and Brody is playing Lovelace's Deep Throat co-star Harry Reems.

Meanwhile, Inferno, which, at one point, had Lindsay Lohan in the lead role until she was either fired or quit,...

Matthew Fox Will Cry In ‘Emperor’; Adam Goldberg Goes Pornographic for ‘Inferno’
I’ve been waiting — not impatiently, but with a general interest — for Matthew Fox to jump back into the spotlight after Lost ended. And, although it’s been almost two years since the show went off the air, we’re only seeing him return this year with I, Alex Cross and World War Z hitting screens. Things are looking even better for the thespian, as Variety informs us that he’s grabbed the lead role in Emperor, a Japan-set epic set to be directed by Girl with a Pearl Earring‘s Peter Webber.

His role is that of Gen. Bonner Fellers, who, following the conclusion of World War II, was forced to decide if Japan’s Emperor Hirohito would be hanged for war crimes. David Klass and Vera Blasi‘s screenplay also tells of the man’s “love affair with Aya, a Japanese exchange student he had met years earlier in the U.

Adam Goldberg to Play Porn Star in Inferno; Michael B. Jordan to Guest Star on House
There are two competing Linda Lovelace biopics in the works right now.  Amanda Seyfried will play the 1970s porn star in Lovelace.  A report from yesterday added Adam Brody, Eric Roberts, and Demi Moore to the supporting cast alongside Peter Sarsgaard, Sharon Stone, Juno Temple, Wes Bentley, Hank Azaria, and possibly James Franco.  Malin Akerman will assume the starring role in Inferno: A Linda Lovelace Story, surrounded by the likes of Matt Dillon, Paz de la Huerta, Harold Perrineau, and Sasha Grey.  For my money, Lovelace is winning the casting battle handily, a fact not changed by Variety's report that Adam Goldberg is in final talks to play fellow porn star Harry Reems in Inferno.  Maybe I am swayed by my fondness for Brody, who's playing Reems in Lovelace.  But really, Seyfried + Sarsgaard > Akerman + Dillon.  However, I am on record saying I don't have the heart to watch this ugly tale,...

Adam Goldberg Close To A Role In Inferno: A Linda Lovelace Story
We've been writing quite a bit about Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman's Linda Lovelace biopic in the last few months, but Matthew Wilder's Inferno: A Linda Lovelace Story is still very much a thing. While there was plenty of drama in the beginning due to the casting of Lindsey Lohan in the title role, the movie now has Malin Akerman attached to star and quite the supporting cast, including Matt Dillon (who will play Lovelace.s pornographer husband Chuck Traynor), Paz de la Huerta (of Boardwalk Empire fame), Sasha Grey (who used to be a porn start herself and Harold Perrineau (who will be playing Sammy Davis Jr.). Now the film is close to adding yet another player to its ranks. Adam Goldberg, best known for roles in movies like Saving Private Ryan and Dazed and Confused, is now  in final negotiations for a part in the film,...

Update: Variety also reports that James Franco is in talks to reunite with his Howl directors and do a small cameo as Playboy founder Hugh Hefner in the film. He was originally circling the Chuck Traynor role, but don’t expect him to have a big cameo role, as he will only shoot for one day. Check out the original story below.

Lovelace, the story of the sexual revolution and the birth of the feminist movement as viewed through the experiences of Deep Throat actress Linda Lovelace, has added four new performers to its already impressive cast. According to Variety, producers on the film have confirmed that Hank Azaria, Chris Noth, Robert Patrick, and Bobby Cannavale have all been signed to join the film, which will be directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman.

Amanda Seyfried in Lovelace (2013)
Like Alexander the Great, Steve Prefontaine, and Snow White before her, the late Deep Throat star Linda Lovelace suddenly has several producers prepping biopics simultaneously. The reluctant porn icon made her way into pop culture history with 1972′s Deep Throat, which was used as an informant code name during that year’s Watergate scandal and resurfaced with the Dennis Hopper-narrated documentary Inside Deep Throat, released in 2005 three years after Lovelace’s untimely death.

Today, EW confirmed that Juno Temple (left) and Wes Bentley have been added to the cast of Lovelace, Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman’s biopic, which...

Sharon Stone to Play Linda Lovelace’s Mother in Inferno: A Linda Lovelace Story
Dual Linda Lovelace biopics are in the works, and one of them just nabbed Sharon Stone. The actress tells AP that she’s joined the cast of Inferno: A Linda Lovelace Story. Inferno is the one that almost starred Lindsay Lohan, but now Malin Akerman is set in the leading role. Matthew Wilder will direct. Lovelace came to prominence after her starmaking performance in Deep Throat, later claiming that she had been forced into the pornography business by her abusive husband. The competing biopic in the works, Lovelace, has Amanda Seyfried set as the starlet, with Peter Sarsgaard in talks to play her husband Chuck Traynor. Stone will move on to Inferno after filming the thriller The Mule.

Sharon Stone Joins Linda Lovelace Film ‘Inferno’
According to The AP, Sharon Stone has officially joined the cast of Matthew Wilder‘s porn star biopic Inferno: A Linda Lovelace Story. Stone will be playing the mother of iconic porn star Linda Lovelace, played here by Couples Retreat star Malin Akerman.

The project has been in development for some time; we reported a year and a half ago that Lindsay Lohan had signed on to play Lovelace, but that didn’t stick. It took her a whole six months to get fired from the project, and Akerman was soon brought in as a replacement.

Inferno will explore the life of Lovelace, who was ultimately forced to star in various porn films, including Deep Throat, by her deranged husband and manager Chuck Traynor, played by Matt Dillon. It’s based on her autobiography, the appropriately-titled Ordeal: An Autobiography, thus not to be confused with a similar project, Lovelace, which...
