New Documentary “You Need This” Examines Dark Side of Consumer Culture
Adam McKay
A groundbreaking film that will be released in 2025 tries to show how consumer culture has changed society and the environment. The movie, “You Need This,” is directed by Adam McKay, who was nominated for an Oscar. It looks at how modern capitalism has deeply changed people’s behavior.

The documentary, which Zdf Studios bought to be shown worldwide, follows consumer society from its start in the United States in the 1950s to where it is now. Ryan Andrej Lough directed the movie, which includes talks with scientists Adam Haar-Horowitz, Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah (author), and Juliet Schor (economist).

“It’s not cultural or political divisions that have turned our world upside down, but the relentless quest for corporate profit fuelling consumerism,” McKay says. The director of the video says that even though the results are serious, they also show that people are becoming more aware of the bigger effects of consumption.

Adam McKay-Produced Documentary ‘You Need This’ From Banijay’s Scenery Probes Hyper-Consumerism (Exclusive)
Image
After tackling climate change in his Oscar-nominated political satire “Don’t Look Up,” filmmaker Adam McKay has produced “You Need This,” a thought-provoking documentary explores consumerism and hyper-capitalism.

Directed by Ryan Andrej Lough (“Entertainment”), “You Need This” is produced by McKay and Staci Roberts-Steele via Yellow Dot Studios; Isidoor Roebers and Lea Fels at Scenery, a joint venture with Banijay Benelux; and Tyler Owen and Cecilia Butler with Hôtel Motion Pictures.

Zdf Studios’ Off the Fence has acquired the premium documentary for worldwide rights across streaming, digital and broadcast platforms, for an anticipated 2025 premiere.

“You Need This” charts how consumerism emerged from the “unbridled optimism of 1950s America and evolved into a global system shaping our desires, identities, and behaviours. Conditioning the population to find meaning and status through endless consumption, this insatiable machine depletes our environment, strains our social bonds, and damages our well-being,” reads the synopsis.

‘Make Polluters Pay’: Big Oil Slammed in Satirical US Billboards
Image
Across the United States this week, the climate disasters fueled by Big Oil will be displayed on billboards in California, New York, Arizona, and Philadelphia.

The bold campaign, launched by non-profit organization Fossil Free Media, calls out the decades of misinformation spread by oil and gas companies as they sowed doubt about the environmental dangers of burning fossil fuels while greenwashing their public image.

The Make Polluters Pay campaign captures the devastating impacts of the climate crisis specific to each state: Images depicting the Paradise fire in California, extreme heatwaves in Arizona,...

Adam McKay’s Yellow Dot Studios to Release Scripted Short Form Series ‘Cobell Energy’ Created by Ari Cagan (Exclusive)
Image
For many content creators, TikTok is the gateway to Hollywood. But now, the movie industry may finally be catching on to the value of the behemoth social media platform, which will soon be home to more scripted and produced shows.

Adam McKay, with his non-profit production company Yellow Dot Studios, is set to be the first traditional Hollywood producer to invest real money into a scripted series on TikTok. Written and directed by Ari Cagan, whose podcast “Things You Don’t Need to Know” was produced by McKay’s Hyperobject Industries, “Cobell Energy” is a satirical office comedy about a family-owned oil company “battling against innovation, activists and each other as they destroy the planet to protect their own interests,” according to the series logline. The first episode of the 15-episode series releases on the platform on Nov. 14.

“Ari is a creative ball of energy who wakes up every day...

Adam McKay Launches Climate Content Studio Yellow Dot
Image
Don’t Look Up director Adam McKay has launched the nonprofit Yellow Dot Studios as a content production banner to raise awareness about the global climate crisis.

The new venture aims to quickly produce videos, memes and media for viral distribution and will kick off with the debut video “Commercial For Big Money.” McKay, who is also known for movies like Vice, The Big Short, Anchorman, Step Brothers and Talladega Nights, in a statement said Yellow Dot needs to play catch up as the mainstream media is slow to cover the global climate emergency.

“Oil companies’ horrible and destructive disinformation created decades of delay in dealing with climate breakdown. Yellow Dot’s goal is to push back, whether that’s through in-house videos, or videos for climate orgs and activist groups, to help get people involved and activated at a rapid pace,” McKay argued.

Before the current WGA strike, Yellow Dot Studios,...

Adam McKay Launches Nonprofit Climate Content Studio Yellow Dot With Debut Video ‘Commercial For Big Money’ – Watch
Image
Adam McKay has launched the nonprofit Yellow Dot Studios to make videos and other materials aimed at raising public understanding of the climate emergency and related issues, following the viral success of his spoof Chevron ad last September that had more than 4.5 million views in 24 hours alone.

McKay and his Yellow Dot team will produce quick-turnaround videos, memes and media that is in step with the increasing urgency of the climate crisis.

Yellow Dot has released its debut video Commercial For Big Money, which looks at “the kind of money that’s unregulated, gathers by the billions, causes inaction to the climate crisis, bank collapses and an unaffordable life for large portions of the planet. Enjoy!”

Commercial For Big Money, which along with the first number of videos to be released in the coming months were written before the start of the WGA strike, is available with Spanish subtitles.

Darth Vader Endorses Exxon’s ‘Destruction’ of the Earth in Adam McKay-Produced Spot — Watch
Image
Adam McKay is taking aim at the “mad evil” of Exxon in a new spoof short film speaking out on climate change.

The “Don’t Look Up” director produced “A Love Letter to Exxon from Darth Vader,” helmed by Alice Park. “A long time ago, in our own galaxy, ExxonMobil knew that their product would destroy our planet,” the synopsis reads. “But instead of warning the public, they lied about the climate crisis so they could make trillions in profits. That’s mad evil. The type of evil that someone like Darth Vader respects. It’s sort of like the (very real) friendship medal that Vladimir Putin gave former Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson for helping expand Russian oil and gas production and fuel their war machine.”

McKay’s Hyperobject Industries banner is behind the short film for the Stop The Oil Profiteering (Stop) campaign by Fossil Free Media, a nonprofit media...

Adam McKay Releases Fake Chevron Ad: ‘We Don’t Give a F*ck About You’
Image
“Don’t Look Up” has come and gone, but Adam McKay is still thinking about climate change.

On Thursday, the Oscar nominee posted a video mocking Chevron on his Hyperobject Industries YouTube channel. The fake commercial, which consists of a voiceover bragging about the oil giant’s indifference to human life playing over pleasant stock footage, has already garnered over 50,000 views.

The ad juxtaposes beautiful imagery with harsh words to mock the way McKay thinks corporations try to distract people from their misdeeds. The narrator brags about fueling wars in the Middle East and “turning the planet into a hellish George Miller film” while images lull viewers into a passive state. “Because at the end of the day, we at Chevron don’t give a single fuck about you, your weird children or your ratty ass dog,” he says.

The spot was written by McKay, narrated by Steven San Miguel, edited by Bruce Hermann,...

Adam McKay Is The Mind Behind That Devastating Faux “Chevron Ad” On Social Media
Image
Posted online today and already with over 2.5 million views, what appears to be a run-of-the-mill glossy ad about Chevron’s corporate stewardship of the earth and contribution to American families — shades of the El Segundo Blue — takes a very dissonant turn.

“We at Chevron believe there is nothing more precious than life,” the voiceover begins accompanied by sunny footage of a baby and other natural wonders before continuing, “And the most precious life of all is the dead kind.” The ad goes on to point out that oil is actually the product of organic matter (once alive) placed under extreme pressure for millions of years.

“Oil that we can refine and sell as gasoline,” it continues to photos of a laughing beautiful young couple, one of whom playfully pushes the other in a shopping cart, “so that a cool-ass tank can crush a clay hut or an airplane can take...
