5lbs of Pressure Review | Gripping Family Drama Elevates Crime Thriller
Image
Luke Evans shines in a powerful performance alongside the excellent Rory Culkin and Alex Pettyfer in this emotionally resonant crime drama. The intricate family drama is realistic, but illogical writing weakens the narrative, making for a mixed viewing experience. The film weaves multiple characters and plots together, providing an engaging experience despite flaws in execution and timing.

5lbs of Pressure follows a recently paroled murderer as he returns to his old neighborhood in a desperate quest to meet the son he last saw as a child. His presence reopens old wounds and vendettas as various criminals struggle to deal with an unwelcome presence. The well-acted film vacillates between searing drama and clunky violence because writer-director Phil Allocco nails the family themes but struggles to believably tie every loose thread together. A clearer focus on the primary arc would have created a more concise film.

Adam (Luke Evans) meets with his...

‘Ghosted’ Trailer: Chris Evans Flies to London for Ana de Armas in Romantic Spy Thriller
Image
Apple TV+ dropped the trailer for the upcoming rom-com turned thriller “Ghosted,” which stars Chris Evans and Ana de Armas.

The trailer shows Evans’ character Cole certain that Sadie (de Armas) is not just “ghosting” him, or ignoring his texts, after one date. What ensues is a spy-thriller where “action speaks louder than words.”

De Armas joins the film after her recent Oscar nomination for “Blonde.” Her credits also include “Deep Water,” “Blade Runner 2049” and “No Time to Die.” Evans has played Captain America in several Marvel Cinematic Universe films, as well as performed in “Before We Go,” “Gifted” and “Playing It Cool.” Evans and de Armas previously acted together in “Knives Out” and “The Gray Man.

Guy Ritchie, Jake Gyllenhaal Thriller ‘The Interpreter’ Retitled ‘The Covenant’ (Exclusive)
Image
Speaking from the Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah, Guy Ritchie revealed Friday that his thriller “The Interpreter” is now titled “The Covenant.”

“Names, as it transpires, is about the most challenging aspect of filmmaking,” Ritchie told Variety. “The last few films I’ve done, the trickiest decision to make has been the name of the movie. As of today, it’s called ‘The Covenant.'”

The thriller sees Gyllenhaal’s army sergeant in Afghanistan rescued by his Afghan interpreter, played by Fahim Fazli, and having to traverse hostile territory towards safety. Written by Ritchie and his regular collaborators Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies, the film was completed “literally in the last few days,” said Ritchie.

It is only one of a packed lineup of projects for the “Sherlock Holmes” director. Next to shoot in February is “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.” “Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre” is also...

‘The Prey: Legend of Karnoctus’ Review
Image
Stars: Danny Trejo, Adrian Paul, Nick Chinlund, Kevin Grevioux, Fahim Fazli, Cleveland Berto, Reka Rene, Cleo Anthony, Masika Kalysha, Essam Ferris | Written by Matthew Hensman, Gustavo Sainz de la Peña | Directed by Cire Hensman, Matthew Hensman

Originally filmed as simply The Prey, The Prey: Legend of Karnoctus, had the unwieldy subtitle added to help distinguish it from everything from Norman J Warren’s exploitation gem Prey to the 80s slasher The Prey and the more recent Cambodian riff on The Most Dangerous Game also titled The Prey. The film starts in a cave somewhere in Afghanistan as something large and furry gives US forces a helping hand by taking out a couple of Taliban soldiers.

Elsewhere in the area, a US squad is on patrol, but the fireworks are being provided by a well-armed group of mercenaries including Vega, Gunnar, Tagger and Reid. But they’re not working as security contractors,...

Perspective Look At The 12 Strong Movie – Chris Hemsworth And Michael Shannon Star
By Marc Butterfield (Analyst, freelance writer, veteran)

Until 1979, most of the modern world had never heard of Afghanistan as little more than a spot on a globe in the library. In that year, the Soviet Union sent special forces commandos in to raid the royal residence and kill the occupants, installing a puppet government. From that point forward, as a people and a place, they have rarely been Out of the news. To the British empire, Afghanistan was well known, but as Americans, we were ignorant of it. In fact, almost any country that has every tried to tame the Afghan territory has failed, and almost always after long, expensive, bloody campaigns. The lesson of futility was learned time and again.

Then, because of the Taliban, a product of soviet invasion and American intervention, acting as hosts of Al Qaeda, Afghanistan once again was put on the radar of the American people.

12 Strong Trailer #2 Puts Chris Hemsworth on the Front Lines of War
Navid Negahban
With the Thanksgiving holiday just around the corner, Warner Bros. Pictures has released the second trailer for 12 Strong, based on the declassified true story of the Horse Soldiers, the first group of soldiers sent into Afghanistan after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. While there is not necessarily a direct correlation between these soldiers at the Thanksgiving holiday, the trailer opens with a brief segment that features bits of footage with the messages, "Thankful for home," "Thankful for freedom" and "Thankful for family" before the trailer begins.

On our darkest day, they were our greatest hope. 12 Strong is set in the harrowing days following 9/11 when a U.S. Special Forces team, led by their new Captain, Mitch Nelson (Hemsworth), is chosen to be the first U.S. troops sent into Afghanistan for an extremely dangerous mission. Their mission takes them to the harsh mountainous landscape of Afghanistan, as they try to convince Northern...

So, “12 Strong: The Declassified True Story Of The Horse Soldiers” (my god, that title) is now billing itself as “The true story of the first victory in the war on terror.” Honestly, I’m not sure I’m ready to process of all that, but nonetheless, flag waving marketing probably finds an audience.
