‘The Final Girls’ Director and Cast on How ‘Wizard of Oz’ Inspired Their Horror Comedy
Out now in limited release and available on VOD, the horror comedy The Final Girls brings quite a comedic punch. When I talked with the team behind the film at SXSW you could see just how much they used their natural comedic timing for laughs. The film follows Max (Taissa Farmiga) who, along with a group of friends, get transported into the reality of an 80s horror slasher her recently deceased mother starred in. Together they must band together and figure out how to survive the murderous Billy who haunts the campgrounds.

For director Todd Strauss-Schulson, it’s a film that manages to be highly entertaining without overstaying its welcome too much. There is also a fun balance of zany effects that work well with some that are a bit more regrettable. In my SXSW review I mentioned, “For The Final Girls, a high-concept meta riff on the slasher horror films of the 80’s,...

The Final Girls Review [SXSW 2015]
The Final Girls is one of those films that’s so hard to classify, because it’s got a little something for everyone. First and foremost, horror fans are going to have a blast with M.A. Fortin and Joshua John Miller’s super-self-referential screenplay that captures genre geekdom and pokes fun at Every 80s horror cliche imaginable. Mainstream audience aren’t forgotten either, as a hilarious cast of talented actors put comedy first, while gory kill-sequences are kept at an acceptable minimum.

And of course, we can’t forget about the true cinema fans, as director Todd Strauss-Schulson’s killer attention to ambitious detail somehow comes together like an insanely metaphysical nightmare that transcends so many wild and crazy levels. Trust me, you’ve never seen a slasher film like The Final Girls, and that’s what makes this movie such a riotous take on horror norms gone sexily wrong.
