Jonathan Landay

Win Shock and Awe on DVD
To mark the release of Shock and Awe on 10th September, we’ve been given 3 copies to give away on DVD.

In a post-9/11 political landscape, a group of journalists working for the Knight Ridder media company, covering George Bush’s planned invasion of Iraq in 2003, are sceptical of the president’s claim that Saddam Hussein has ‘Weapons of Mass Destruction’. Journalists Jonathan Landay (Woody Harrelson) and Warren Strobel (James Marsden) decide to play a risky game by questioning the true nature of the White House’s justification for the conflict. Shock And Awe depicts their race to unveil the truth, to change the course of history, in order to prevent another war.

Dick Cheney
‘Shock and Awe’ Review: Journalistic Drama Is No ‘All the President’s Men’
Dick Cheney
Oh god, you want to love it. You really, really want to love it, or at least, y’know, like it a lot, to stand up and cheer with it. I mean, a movie about journalists, real ones, doing what they do best, pounding the pavement and searching for the truth? Hasn’t the Fourth Estate suffered enough slings and arrows in the past few years? Haven’t they – and we – earned a shoe-leathered hero’s journey, a vindication and a victory lap, especially when history has declared these lone...

Rob Reiner: His best films to date
For about 35 years now, Rob Reiner has been a director. For the first decade and a half, he was among the best in the business. Recently? Not so much. That being said, we’re focusing on the good today. Since he’s releasing a new film in the next few days, it feels apt to look at his best work. So, that’s what I’m doing. A full ranking of all of his movies is on the way, with special attention paid to his top features. I would argue that half of his output is good to very good, with five or six legitimately great works on his resume. This week, Reiner puts out his 20th feature, this time another political offering. It’s Shock and Awe, his treatise on the lies of the Bush Administration, namely in terms of going to war with Iraq. As per IMDb:...

PopPolitics: Rob Reiner on Where Media Went Wrong on Iraq — and Then With Trump (Listen)
Rob Reiner at an event for Flipped (2010)
Washington — Rob Reiner’s new movie “Shock & Awe” is the story of the Knight-Ridder D.C. journalists who “got it right” on Iraq, as he says, in their skeptical coverage that cast serious doubts about the Bush administration’s case for war.

Reiner plays bureau chief John Walcott, who at one point tells his reporters, “When the government says something, you only have one question to ask, and that is, ‘Is it true?'”

“Certainly most of the mainstream journalists did not ask those tough questions in the run up to the war in Iraq, and I would submit that they didn’t ask those questions of Donald Trump during the campaign,” Reiner tells Variety‘s “PopPolitics” on SiriusXM’s Potus Channel. “And I think he got pretty much a free ride.”

He said that since Trump was elected, many news outlets are “doing their due diligence, but now we...

Trailer for Rob Reiner's Investigative Journalism Film 'Shock and Awe'
"How real is the chatter about Iraq?" "Very." Vertical Entertainment has released the first official trailer for Rob Reiner's new film, an investigative journalism thriller titled Shock and Awe. The film is based on the true events of Knight Ridder journalists who were the only ones who "got it right" in the lead-up to the 2003 Iraq War. They were the only ones skeptical skeptical of President Bush's claim that Iraq's Saddam Hussein has "weapons of mass destruction." James Marsden stars as Warren Strobel, and Woody Harrelson as Jonathan Landay, with a cast including Jessica Biel, Milla Jovovich, Tommy Lee Jones, Rob Reiner himself, and Richard Schiff. This looks like another strong film about the power and importance of good journalism. And you know, I am happier seeing films about journalism instead of more films about the war. Here's the first official trailer for Rob Reiner's Shock and Awe, direct...

‘Shock And Awe’ Trailer: Rob Reiner’s Thriller About Journalists Vs. The Government’s Iraq War Justification
Tommy Lee Jones, Woody Harrelson, Rob Reiner, and James Marsden in Shock and Awe (2017)
“Simply stated, there is no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction.” It was 2002, and Dick Cheney had just delivered that chilling line to the world. As politicians, civilians and journalists digested its broad implications, a team of reporters at Knight Ridder were told to “see if we can nail them down.” This is their story.

Here is the first trailer for Shock and Awe, director Rob Reiner’s politically charged film starring Woody Harrelson and James Marsden as Jonathan Landay and Warren Strobel, two of the Kr staffers who began “working on a theory that the [Bush] administration’s already decided to go to war and are now focused on how to justify it.” Things rachet up when a source tells them, “It’s not a theory.”

Reiner also stars in Shock and Awe as John Walcott, then the Washington bureau chief of the Knight Ridder newspaper chain.

Zurich: Rob Reiner's 'Shock and Awe' Gets Standing Ovation
Rob Reiner at an event for Flipped (2010)
Rob Reiner was greeted with two separate standing ovations at the Zurich International Film Festival Saturday night for the world premiere of his new film, Shock and Awe.

The real-life drama looks at the Knight Ridder journalists who questioned the Bush government's claims — since debunked — that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. They were the only U.S. reporters working for a mainstream publication to get the story right in the march to war in Iraq in 2003.

Shock and Awe stars James Marsden and Woody Harrelson as Knight Ridder reporters Warren Strobel and Jonathan Landay. Rob Reiner...

Big Change For Shock And Awe As Alec Baldwin Leaves Film Project
As perhaps befits the title of the film, Alec Baldwin has surprised many by departing the Rob Reiner movie Shock And Awe, for which principal photography has already begun. The politically controversial project – which concerns the legality of the case for the 2003 Iraq war – is expected to move forward with Rob Reiner taking the supporting role that Baldwin was originally cast to play.

Written by Joey Hartstone (Lbj), Shock And Awe chronicles the efforts of a real group of journalists – led by Warren Strobel and Jonathan Landay – who were working for Knight Ridder newspapers in the build up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq. In covering the story, the journalists began to question the veracity of the claims put forth by George W. Bush and his administration that Saddam Hussein was stockpiling weapons of mass destruction.

The cast includes James Marsden, Milla Jovovich, Jessica Biel, Woody Harrelson, Tommy Lee Jones, and Richard Schiff,...

Willem Dafoe Joins Sean Baker’s ‘Tangerine’ Follow-Up, Joseph Kahn Sets ‘Bodied,’ and More
Coming off one of the best films of last year, Tangerine, director Sean Baker is going from iPhone to 35mm for his next feature, The Florida Project. We spoke with him about the drama and now it’s recently gone into production, with Willem Dafoe spotted on set. Currently shooting in Orlando, it follows a six-year-old and her group of friends during summer break as they adventure and soar on youth while their parents handle real-life problems. Although there are no details on his role, one could assume Dafoe will play one of these parents. [Page Six]

In other news, Woody Harrelson may already re-team with director Rob Reiner after their recently-shot Lbj with a “politically charged” Iraq war drama titled Shock and Awe, Deadline reports. James Marsden has also been added to the growing cast list. The drama will be penned by Joey Hartstone, who also wrote their last collaboration. The...
