Barbara Crampton, the Queen of the Night, will be present to introduce Re-Animator, From Beyond, and Teacher's Pet, and Lloyd Kaufman, the King of Troma, will present Mr. Melvin. And that's not all! Out of All the Imaginary Friends in Horror, This Shudder Original Has the Scariest One
Image
When it comes to horror, the old adage "less is more" rings true, where the slow-building dread of an entity that isn't seen induces more fear than one that terrorizes the screen. Director Brandon Christensen, known for a few of his Shudder originals, The Puppetman and Superhost, plays on this concept to the extreme in his 2019 film, Z, a film that makes our imagination do all the work. Following a family who is tormented by a dark creature called Z, the film twists the idea of an imaginary friend into something more monstrous, except we don't necessarily see the monster. Z's design is based on his absence, or invisible presence, controlling the atmosphere and tones from the background while flashing glimpses of horrific images that churn the gears of imagination in our minds. Though he is not physically visible, the film is at its best when Z takes the reins of the story,...

Sfff 2023: ‘The Puppetman’ Review
Image
Stars: Zachary Le Vey, Alyson Gorske, Angel Prater, Caryn Richman, Michael Paré, Kio Cyr | Written by Brandon Christensen, Ryan Christensen, Matt Manjourides | Directed by Brandon Christensen

Closing out the first night of this year’s Saskatoon Fantastic Film Festival, The Puppetman tossed me a nugget of nostalgia early in the film when the leads make a booze run and I recognized the upside-down sign of Buffalo’s On the Rox Liquors, where many an eventful weekend of my own started.

But that doesn’t come until after we see a man brutally murder his wife while his young daughter cowers, caged in a dark closet. He seems to be struggling with himself as he beats her with a frying pan and stabs her. And that is his defence in court, it wasn’t him, someone or something else was controlling his body. It doesn’t get him acquitted, but it does get him a nickname,...

The Puppetman Review
Image
Another B-movie with big ambitions, The Puppetman contains an intriguing premise, but its half-baked execution erases most of the film's potential. The Puppetman takes inspiration from Nightmare on Elm Street and Final Destination but fails to make its own mark as a memorable addition to the horror genre. The film is confusing, and there is a wasted opportunity to establish an exciting new villain. With a title like The Puppetman, fans might think that the film would be a fun, cheesy time, but this movie is convoluted and dull, and it never manages to lean into its campy premise.

Directed by Brandon Christensen, The Puppetman follows Michal (Alyson Gorske), a college student whose father murdered her mother when she was a child. Michal's father claimed he was not in control of his own body when he committed the heinous murder. In the present day, Michal sleepwalks and experiences strange phenomena.

[Review] Witness Some of The Most F*cked Up Kills of The Year in The Puppetman
Indie horror frightmaker Brandon Christensen is back again with a supernatural shocker that boasts some of the year’s most brutal moments in horror. With Christensen’s signature style of slick, straight-to-the-point storytelling, the titular Puppetman is an inventive and new villain, akin to urban legends favs The Candyman or The Blair Witch…with one helluva twisted sense of humor.

The Puppetman, imprisoned and awaiting his fate on death row, has consistently professed his innocence, attributing his murderous spree to an ominous power that dominated him. As the narrative unfolds, Michal (portrayed by Alyson Gorske), his daughter, witnesses eerily familiar deaths around her. This sparks doubt about the authenticity of her father’s claims. As the deaths escalate, Michal finds herself burdened with the daunting task of unraveling the enigma of The Puppetman‘s curse.

“A supernatural shocker that boasts some of the year’s most brutal moments in horror.

Halloween Ends Kicks Off Its Kills With An Homage To An Underseen Indie Horror Movie
Image
This article contains minor spoilers for "Halloween Ends."

Corey Cunningham (Rohan Campbell) is the name on every horror fan's lips right now. He's the surprise, breakout character of David Gordon Green's final chapter in his reboot trilogy, "Halloween Ends." Sure, Green's trilogy might be an uneven, thematically inconsistent set of films, but Green certainly deserves some brownie points for taking large risks in his attempts to innovate the "Halloween" franchise.

In "Ends," the huge risk is centering its story away from just Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Michael Myers (James Jude Courtney), and exploring Haddonfield's festering anger through a new conduit. Laurie sees something in Corey's eyes, something dark and distant, something evil — not unlike her boogeyman before him. Green makes a large effort to portray Corey's descent into evil through visual parallels with Michael Myers. He stands by the bush and stares at Laurie the way Myers did all those years ago,...

Justin Long Was Too Scared To Finish Barbarian's Script On His First Read
Image
Every once in a while, a wild, surprising horror movie makes the round that prompts fans to give each other the same advice upon watching it: go in cold. Don't read synopses, and don't even watch the trailer, but instead get your butt to theaters (if you can) and check it out for yourself while the element of surprise is still on the filmmakers' side. I haven't been able to do that last part yet, but I've heard through the horror-loving grapevine that the new movie "Barbarian," starring Justin Long, Bill Skarsgard, and Georgina Campbell, is one such film.

The movie, which in the briefest of descriptions is about a double-booked short-term home rental, shocked /Film critic Ryan Scott when he saw it. In his review, he wrote, "You are not ready for the absolute unpredictable roller coaster of craziness that is about to happen to you when this movie hits theaters.

‘Superhost’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Osric Chau, Sara Canning, Gracie Gillam, Barbara Crampton | Written and Directed by Brandon Christensen

Superhost is the third film by writer/director Brandon Christensen (Still/Born) and the first that wasn’t co-written with Colin Minihan. It’s also the first that doesn’t revolve around parenthood. How well has he managed to change things up? And can he bring something new to a pair of well-worn plots, the Airbnb from hell and YouTubers getting more of a story than they bargained for?

Teddy and Claire are co-hosts of the YouTube channel Superhost! as well as being a couple off-screen. He’s even planning to propose to her when they film their next segment.

But all is not well in the world of Airbnb reviews. Their subscriber count has been dropping due to their unsensational content. They rent a remote cabin only to find that the access code has been changed.

Among this year’s programming options is Freeform’s annual “31 Nights of Halloween,” with up to 10 films a day including many family favorites from “Shrek” to “Casper,” plus an in-person event in Los Angeles called Freeform’s Halloween Road. Additionally, horror streaming service Shudder has kicked off “61 Days of Halloween,” with weekly film and series premieres, 24-hour jack-o-lantern stream “The Ghoul Log” and a “Halloween Hotline” where every Friday in October, subscribers can call Shudder’s head of programming Samuel Zimmerman to discuss horror favorites and receive new recommendations.

Read a full list of Halloween programming below. (More programming will be added to the list as networks announce titles.)

‘Superhost’ Review (Shudder)

Interview: Co-Writer/Director Brandon Christensen on the Collaborative Nature of Z and More
Image
For his first two features, Brandon Christensen has given us a pair of nightmarish examinations of parental paranoia with Still/Born and Z, with the latter officially headed onto Blu-ray and DVD this week, courtesy of Rlje Films and Shudder (it’s also now available on a variety of Digital platforms). Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with Christensen and he discussed the inspiration behind the story of Z, the challenges of making “nothing” scary, collaborating with the film’s star Keegan Connor Tracy, and more.

Great to speak with you again, Brandon. You and Colin [Minihan] have collaborated together a few times now. I was hoping you could start off by discussing the process behind putting this story together for Z in particular, and how different that process was for you both this time around versus Still/Born.

Brandon Christensen: With Still/Born, Colin and I were both there from the beginning.

Z Review: The Creepy Kid Horror Canon Gets a Chilling New Entry
Jett Klyne
The creepy kid horror canon is extensive. Often paired with the possession film or another supernatural subgenre, many of these pictures look to mine the common fear of a child with innate evil. For parents, they also tap into the fear that your child is not turning the way you imagined they would–in fact, they may be utterly psychotic.

Co-writer and director Brandon Christensen initially codes his second feature, Z, so that it fits neatly into these trappings. It’s apparent right out of the gate: a textural montage of Joshua (Jett Klyne) illustrates the cerebral and visceral immersion of childhood, where toy planes and trains roar to life with all the hums and throttles of their real-life counterparts. This opening also injects the tiniest hint of menace into youth, quickly teasing tension and the threat of violence before snapping it away.

Then, after this moment of abstract childhood bliss,...

Review: Z Invites Your Deepest Fears Out to Play
Image
Many of us have a childhood memory of a monster that we were convinced lived in the closet, under our bed, or in a particularly shadowy corner of our room. It’s funny how, as we age, the shadows simply become shadows and our fears slowly fade. Suppose, however, that the specter in the shadows never really went away… we just no longer had the imagination to see him.

Z chillingly challenges the idea that we can outgrow our deepest fears. The cynicism of adulthood can’t necessarily save you from the things that go bump in the night and our greatest traumas have the power to haunt us forever. Z blurs the line between what is real and what is imagination… and it’s a nightmare.

Z is directed by Brandon Christensen (Still/Born) and stars Keegan Connor Tracy, Jett Klyne, and Sean Rogerson. The film enjoyed a warm...
