Now We’re (No Longer) Cooking With Gas: Hollywood Embraces Induction Cooking
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Coming soon to L.A.: the end of gas appliances in new construction. As voted on by the Los Angeles City Council in May and set to start Jan. 1, 2023 (in a tiered phase-out), no new buildings, including residences, may include gas stoves, water heaters, furnaces or gas-powered clothes dryers. Already, though, some Los Angeles designers and their clients are shifting to electric-powered induction stovetops and finding they love the cooking experience. “Induction is the best,” says chef Ludo Lefebvre (Petit Trois), who first cooked with induction at L.A. Live’s All Star Chef Classic in 2014. “It’s fast. It’s powerful. It provides even heat,” he says. “And it’s safe.

Just when networks, studios and streamers thought it might be safe to resume their Emmy campaign plans, Covid-19 had other ideas. A sharp spike in cases this August — around the country but also specifically in Los Angeles County — forced some For Your Consideration event cancellations, while other plans have had to be dramatically downsized, right as the second phase of Emmy voting was set to begin.

It’s a reminder of how unpredictable the past 18 months have been, given the optimism everyone felt earlier this summer. Even as this year’s Emmy nominations were announced in July, things were opening up to the point that Hollywood premieres and other in-person events had resumed. “It’s so hard to plan,” says one awards exec. “We would never want to do anything that risks anyone’s health or safety. The target keeps moving, and the trend isn’t getting any better.”

‘Rat In The Kitchen’: Crew Of ITV America’s TBS Cooking Competition Strike Over Healthcare Benefits
Image
A handful of crew of TBS’ upcoming cooking competition series Rat In The Kitchen have gone on strike over healthcare benefits.

The series, which is produced by ITV America’s Thinkfactory Media, has been shooting in Atlanta, Georgia, but certain members of the IATSE crew downed tools this week.

They say that they are not being provided healthcare benefits. Crew stood down on Thursday saying that producers have been “unresponsive” for requests for recognition. It’s thought that the crew is a mix of ITV America staff and folk from the Warner-owned studio complex.

We understand that around 10% of staff are striking but production is continuing.

The series, which is based on a buzzy British format, is fronted by Natasha Leggero. The ten-part series, which also features celebrity chef Ludo Lefebvre as a judge, follows a group of cooks competing to win a cash prize across a series of challenges.

Selena Gomez on Working With Blackpink, Life in Quarantine and Why She’s Getting Political (Watch)
Image
Selena Gomez and Blackpink know how to end the summer on a sweet note — by releasing their new single, “Ice Cream,” just before Labor Day. The music video for the infectious candy-coated tune, which will appear on the K-pop group’s upcoming full-length album, was viewed close to 100 million times within 24 hours of its Aug. 28 release on YouTube.

“It’s definitely a joyful thing. Being a part of it brought me joy,” Gomez, 28, says on Thursday’s episode of the Variety and iHeart podcast “The Big Ticket.” “It’s hopefully what everybody else will get from it too. I just want people to feel good. I have a 7-year-old sister, and just to see her dancing to it — she hasn’t been able to go to school, and just seeing how much fun it can be, it was such a highlight.”

In addition to “Ice Cream,” Gomez hosts HBO Max’s “Selena + Chef,...

‘Selena + Chef’: Selena Gomez Details “Very Odd” Process Of Filming HBO Max Cooking Show While Under Lockdown – TCA
Image
Selena Gomez busts out her cooking chops in the new HBO Max series Selena + Chef. From perfecting French omelettes to undercooking cheese soufflés, the singer said that testing her culinary skills helped get her out of the quarantine rut.

“I was definitely getting down and a lot is going on,” the singer said during HBO’s TCA session on Wednesday. “[The show] was an opportunity to make something that could make people smile.”

The Dolittle star, joined by producer Aaron Saidman and chef Antonia Lofaso, shared that her first unscripted series afforded her the skills and confidence to take on challenging dishes. While some of the show’s featured recipes, including one for a spicy miso ramen, have become staples for the singer, Gomez said she intends on staying away from others.

“I really, really didn’t like that. It’s a whole process never doing again in my life,” Gomez said...

The Taste: Season Three Ratings
This cooking competition didn't do that well in the ratings in its first season and then the numbers dropped a lot lower in season two. ABC still renewed The Taste for a third round. Will the ratings go up in season three or will they drop lower? Cancelled or renewed for season four? Stay tuned.

The Taste is a culinary competition that pits professional and amateur cooks against one another in weekly challenges. The returning judges/mentors are Anthony Bourdain, Nigella Lawson, Ludo Lefebvre, and Marcus Samuelsson.

The ratings are typically the best indication of a show's likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available -- usually the next day, around 11:30am Est/8:30am Pst. Refresh to see the latest. (more…)...

Nigella (2005)
What Is 'The Taste' Cooking Up This Season? Et Goes Behind the Scenes
Nigella (2005)
Et's Kevin Frazier went behind the scenes of The Taste to see what the show has in store for its return Thursday and do his own judging of the chefs' dishes.

News: Get Your First Bite of The Taste

Renowned chefs Nigella Lawson, Marcus Sammuelsson, Ludo Lefebvre and Anthony Bourdain serve as mentors/judges on the ABC show, which averaged 3.7 million viewers last season -- more than double that of Top Chef.

What makes The Taste different from other food competition shows is that the mentors/judges taste the dishes blindly to help determine their teams. Kevin did his own blind taste test, choosing Marco as the winner, which left Ludo a little bitter.

"I'm not sure you have a palette, bro," Ludo blurted.

As one of the most well-traveled chefs on Earth, Anthony gave Kevin a whiff of the worst dish he's ever had -- fermented shark.

"It's like radioactive material," said Anthony...

The Taste (2013)
Why Anthony Bourdain loves doing 'The Taste'
The Taste (2013)
The cooking competition "The Taste" returns tonight to ABC for its third season. The series introduced blind tasting of food to reality competitions--judges don't know whose food they're eating or even what's in the dish. It also brought Anthony Bourdain to a big, bright, glossy ABC reality show. The star of Travel Channel's Emmy-winning "No Reservations" and now CNN's "Parts Unknown" seems like perhaps the last person to gravitate to a "The Voice"-like competition for food, but when we talked Wednesday, one day before he was heading to Madagascar for "Parts Unknown," he was clearly, unabashedly enthusiastic about the series, which he also executive produces. When I asked about whether skeptical fans have now warmed to "The Taste" and his participation, Bourdain said, "I honestly don't think about. It's always a quality of life issue for me. Am I having fun? Am I working with people I like?...

'The Taste' Mentors on Season 3's "Brutal" Twist, Shouting Battles and Matching Tattoos
The Taste (2013)
If you ask The Taste mentor Ludo Lefebvre, there is more pressure on him than fellow mentors Anthony Bourdain, Marcus Samuelsson or Nigella Lawson heading into the ABC cooking competition's third season, which premieres Dec. 4. "Tony, Marcus and Nigella have nothing to lose — they are losers already," Lefebvre, who mentored the winning season-two cook, bluntly told The Hollywood Reporter during a recent set visit. "Me, I win. I need to defend my title." (Season one's winning mentor, Brian Malarkey, is no longer with the show.) Lefebvre added that he has a target on his back this
