Gerard Butler is set to star in Hyde Park Entertainment’s and Eon Productions’ international action thriller “Remote Control.” Butler’s G-base Entertainment is also attached.

John Mathieson (“Gladiator”) will direct the movie, which is an adaptation of a Mark Burnell novel. Burnell did the adapting himself, writing the screenplay.

John Mathieson, who received Oscar nominations for cinematography on “Gladiator” and “Phantom of the Opera,” will direct from Mark Burnell’s screenplay, based on Burnell’s novel.

STXfilms has secured worldwide sales rights for the film and will introduce the film to buyers at the European Film Market at the Berlin Film Festival, which opens Wednesday.

The action-drama directed by Reed Morano (The Handmaid’s Tale) initially received buzz as a female-led James Bond-esque film (the movie was produced by Barbara Broccoli, who’s behind the British spy franchise). Yet, the $50 million production only grossed $2.8 million across 3,049 theaters in its first three days, according to IndieWire.

These box office numbers made history as the lowest opening ever for a movie showing in more than 3,000 theaters.

You could tell that there was something wrong with The Rhythm Section as early as last April when Paramount didn’t include the title in its CinemaCon reel of then-intended big pics like Terminator: Dark Fate and Gemini Man.

After what was buzzed to be a female James Bond pic from 007 Eon producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson, we finally learned why Paramount didn’t bet on this critically panned-audience rejected knock-off of La Femme Nikita. Rhythm Section reps Blake Lively’s lowest wide opening at the domestic box office with $2.8M. It’s an unfortunate setback for the former Gossip Girl alum, who’s proved herself to be bankable on a global basis with A Simple Favor ($97M+) and The Shallows ($119M). Man, she even injured her hand during filming. Note this is a film that she over-delivered on, and critics have been quick to note her sublime performance.

Sony’s “Bad Boys for Life” is keeping the North American box office healthy as it heads for its third weekend crown at domestic multiplexes with about $17.4 million at 3,705 sites, estimates showed Saturday.

But Paramount’s spy thriller “The Rhythm Section,” starring Blake Lively, has tanked in ninth-place with a $2.9 million launch at 3,049 North American locations — well below pre-release expectations in the $4 million to $8 million range. Forgive the inscrutable title: Reed Morano’s “The Rhythm Section” will explain away its awkward name in due time, though it will likely only inspire viewers to wish for something even weirder to try to sum up the filmmaker’s third feature film. , “The Rhythm Section” might as well be called “This Hurts a Lot,” because the Blake Lively-starring adaptation of Mark Burnell’s novel leaves a mark on both its star and audience. “I’m not looking to get healed,” Lively’s Stephanie huffs at someone halfway through the dark drama, about as close to an ethos as her nihilistic anti-heroine has to offer.

That’s not to say she’s not compelling, or that she doesn’t start to evolve as the mystery winds on. It’s less a film about secret spies and global conspiracies than an exploration of the price of guilt and the weight of trauma.

“The Rhythm Section,” the Paramount spy thriller starring Blake Lively and coming from the producers of the James Bond movies, earned $235,000 in its Thursday box office previews from 2,256 locations, a per-screen average of $104.

“The Handmaid’s Tale” director Reed Morano’s action film has an uphill battle as it opens against both the fantasy horror film “Gretel & Hansel” and of course faces weekend competition from the Super Bowl on Sunday. The film is projected to earn between $9-12 million in its opening weekend against a $50 million budget.

During last year’s Super Bowl, the female-fronted action movie “Miss Bala” earned $650,000 in its Thursday previews and went on to an opening of $6.8 million from 2,203 screens.

Rhythm Section, which cost $50M before P&a, is expected to die according to tracking with a single digits gross over 3-days at 3,049 locations, while Gretel & Hansel could see $10M at 3,007 theaters in a weekend that will be ruled again by Sony’s Bad Boys for Life in its third go-round with $15.3M. Reed Morano and Blake Lively are a potent combination of filmmaker and star. Pairing them for an emotional mix of action and drama, based on a series of popular thriller novels? Well, that should be a recipe for great success. Well, it’s not quite that simple. Parts of The Rhythm Section, opening this week, are very well done. Morano’s direction and Lively’s performance are spot on (more later). However, with a middling screenplay and some puzzle stylistic choices, this film winds up being very much a mixed bag. The highs are quite good, especially for a January release, while the lows remind you why Paramount decided to put this one out in the month that they did. A strong lead performance can't save The Rhythm Section from molasses slow pacing. The Blake Lively revenge thriller showcases her excellent range, but not much else. An initially promising set-up is petered away in a mismanaged second act. Graphic action scenes provide a hint of excitement between the dull long stretches. They are not effectively used to further the narrative. This is an odd failure from producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. The owners of the Bond franchise deliver a surprisingly boring film.

A serviceable picture from the 007 stable presided over by producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, and adapted by author Mark Burnell from his own bestselling novel series about the assassin Stephanie Patrick, whose deadly vocation was forged by vengeful rage at the terrorists who wiped out her family in a plane bombing. Reed Morano directs and Blake Lively plays Patrick herself.

The movie is an interesting mix of Le Carré/Ludlum locations, invoked with jittery, paranoid urgency – with a little bit of Luc Besson’s film Léon (1994), which featured grizzled Jean Reno instructing young Natalie Portman in the hitperson’s trade.

It’s a wonder that Stephanie Patrick makes it to the end of “The Rhythm Section” alive. Normal people tend not to survive the kind of sophisticated revenge mission that snaps Stephanie out of her depression and into action-hero mode in Reed Morano’s dark, broody and unexpectedly human payback thriller, which stars Blake Lively as a more-motivated-than-coordinated Post Traumatic Suffering Dispenser.

Lest you fear any mention of her survival constitutes a spoiler, consider this: The movie was adapted from the first of four pulpy Stephanie Patrick novels written by Mark Burnell, so of course she doesn’t die. But she comes awfully close on several occasions, and her near-incompetence in the face of danger makes her relatable in ways very few cinematic assassins have ever been. Paramount is opening the movie in January, the month where Liam Neeson is typically the one to do this kind of dirty work.

There is a moment halfway through The Rhythm Section that encapsulates the entire film’s strengths and weaknesses. It’s a car chase through the streets of Tangier that is shot entirely from the front seat of the vehicle, as terrified would-be assassin Stephanie Patrick (Blake Lively) flees the all-male enemies pursuing and shooting at her. Director Reed Morano puts you right in the middle of the action in what starts out as a stunning one-take sequence but then simply becomes a camera swinging frenetically back and forth as cars torpedo around your peripheral vision.

Meanwhile, a screaming and vulnerable Stephanie, fresh out of training, reacts realistically and wildly to the chaos around her: this is no suave superspy smoothly navigating through the carnage, but a flesh-and-blood human being. And by the way,...

This weekend’s box office is expected to be a slow one, as new releases “The Rhythm Section” from Paramount and “Gretel & Hansel” from United Artists/Orion aren’t expected to earn opening weekends of more than $15 million due to competition from the Super Bowl.

“This is always a slow weekend since most people are staying home on Sundays to watch football, especially in a year where we have the Chiefs and 49ers, two exciting teams that a lot of people were hoping would play in the championship,” said Exhibitor Relations analyst Jeff Bock. “It also affects Saturday box office as well, since many people are home on that night as well as getting ready for their watch parties.”

There’s hopes that “The Rhythm Section” can kick off a franchise if it gets off on the right note.

In the latest trailer for the spy thriller released Tuesday morning, we see Jude Law training Blake Lively for everything that’s in store for her character.

Her mentor, Iain Boyd (Law) also explains the movie’s title in the newest look at Reed Morano’s spy thriller, telling Stephanie Prick (Lively) that you have to get your rhythm section right in order to be able to shoot straight and pull the trigger when you need to.

In one scene, Law asks Lively to shoot him in the chest while he’s wearing a bulletproof vest. Doing that, he says, is the “easy part.”

The 32-year-old actress poked fun at herself in a video she shared on her Instagram Stories on Monday which showed her lying in a hospital bed with her arm in a sling after she was injured in December 2017 while filming the movie.

“Literally 4 weeks after I said, ‘I’d give my right hand to be in this movie!’ (Good thing no one told me to ‘break a leg’),” Lively wrote.

The movie, based on Mark Burnell’s book, as well as his own screenplay, comes from “The Handmaid’s Tale” director Reed Morano and stars Jude Law and Sterling K. Brown in what could be the start of a franchise led by the long-time producers of the James Bond films, Michael G. Wilson, and Barbara Broccoli.

Lively portrays a heroine who adopts the identity of an assassin to get to the bottom of her family’s death in a plane crash. She discovers it may not have been an accident at all. Jude Law, Sterling K. Brown, Daniel Mays and Raza Jaffrey also star.

Lively suffered a hand injury in 2017 while doing a stunt on the Dublin set, resulting in a six-month delay in production. She underwent two hand surgeries before shooting resumed. Sterling K. Brown joined the film as production started again in Spain.

Amazon has struck a first-look deal with A Simple Favor and The Shallows star Blake Lively as it continues to strike overall deals with high-profile talent.

Amazon Studios has just closed the deal with Lively, who broke out via teen drama Gossip Girl, and is now in development with a couple of projects including a series set in New York that includes a “fashion component.”

The news was revealed Saturday during Amazon’s exec session at the TCA summer press tour.

Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke told Deadline, “It took a long time but we just closed a deal with Blake, we closed a first-look deal and we’re talking and developing a show. It’s not ready. It’s set in New York, there’s a fashion component.”

The second project is based around a piece of IP, although the Svod service did not provide details.

The film was previously scheduled to be released on Feb. 22, 2019. The spy thriller will now compete against Disney’s “Frozen 2,” which is opening during the same timeframe.

TheWrap previously reported that production had been temporarily suspended in December 2017 because Lively had injured her wrist while filming an action sequence.
