Shinichirō Watanabe's "Cowboy Bebop" warrants no introduction. A neo-noir space Western like no other, "Cowboy Bebop" is an operatic tale about fate, the inevitability of violence, and the sum of our choices. Everything Watanabe has made post-"Bebop" has contained bits and pieces of this futuristic saga, including his historical adventure anime "Samurai Champloo," which looks back at an anachronistic Edo-era Japan.

The groovy, jazzy aura of "Bebop" has always found a way to seep into Watanabe's brilliant oeuvre, but nothing has ever come remotely close to this elusive sentiment. So when Watanabe's currently-ongoing "Lazarus" first aired in April this year, "Bebop" lovers were enthused about this fresh, snazzy story set in the distant future (also featuring a group of misfits banding together to accomplish the impossible). While Adult Swim's "Lazarus" does revisit the anime auteur's most compelling impulses, it pales in comparison to the riveting stories Watanabe has penned all his life.

John Wick gave action lovers something to rejoice in, and it all started with the perfectly cast Keanu Reeves. But the incredible stuntwork is one of the things that truly set it apart. You could tell that they had something special. And with the mythology behind Wick continuing to grow, and with Ballerina, I’m happy to say that their latest looks like they are continuing to create movie magic.

Back in March, I was given an assignment. JoBlo was invited to take part in the Ballerina 87eleven Stunt Day. I also chatted with the film’s director, Len Wiseman. While that was a few months back, I remember it like yesterday. When we arrived, the journalists and influencers gathered in groups, ready for action. Before the work began, we witnessed a kick ass scene featuring the lovely Ana de Armas. It involved the heroine taking on a bunch of baddies.

Having John Wick director on board is the best thing to happen to Shinichiro Watanabe’s series, Lazarus. Chad Stahelski’s expertise and finesse are reflected in the slick action sequences and fights. The anime would instantly remind viewers of Cowboy Bebop, however, it is nothing alike.

On the contrary, the series is set in a dystopian society headed for its doom. Mappa’s animation and Stahelski’s insight make it a complete visual treat for anime fans and enthusiasts. It is a passion project, however, the director had his conditions regarding this masterpiece.

In other words, Chad Stahelski put forth his requirements to bring forth the brilliance in the anime. It is quite interesting, considering the dream team behind Watanabe’s series, but here’s the thing. This prerequisite also highlights the John Wick director’s relationship with the medium.

Adult Swim's new sci-fi action anime series,Lazarus, is the latest work by Cowboy Bebop director Shinichiro Watanabe. As a lifelong fan of Watanabe's anime, Lazarus action choreographer Chad Stahelski was both excited and apprehensive about taking on the project.

Stahelski is best known for his hit film series John Wick, which effectively showcases the director's talent for creating dynamic action sequences. In a recent interview with Polygon, the critically acclaimed filmmaker recounted how he was offered his position on Lazarus during the filming of John Wick: Chapter 4. "We [Watanabe and Stahelski] decided that we were going to get together when I got to Tokyo the next month to have a coffee or something, and literally, as we're ending the phone call, Joseph Cho [Lazarus producer] goes, 'Hey we're wondering, would one of your guys like to help us out on Lazarus?'...I was literally like, 'f--k that, I'll do it.

The American Cinematheque announced the honorees for the third annual Tribute to the Crafts, which include “Oppenheimer” for cinematography and editing, “Poor Things” for costume design and “I’m Just Ken” from “Barbie” for song. The event will take place on Jan. 19, 2024, at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood.

Celebrating individuals in 15 categories across aspects of filmmaking, Tribute to the Crafts recognizes those “who are at the very heart of filmmaking and have exhibited extraordinary work behind the camera,” per the release. The event will also showcase clips from the films being honored.

With a 30-year career that includes 270 film credits, Oscar-winning sound mixer Kevin O’Connell will receive the Career Achievement Award. His projects from this year include “Oppenheimer,” “Barbie,” “Gran Turismo,” “Cocaine Bear” and “Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret.”

Producers and American Cinematheque board members Franklin Leonard and Paula Wagner will co-host the event.

In its continuing effort to shine the spotlight on industry artisans who toil behind the scenes to make movie magic, the American Cinematheque on Thursday revealed the 2023 honorees for its third annual Tribute to the Crafts.

Winning multiple honors are Oppenheimer for Cinematography and Film Editing; Maestro for Hair & Makeup and Sound; and Barbie for Production Design/Set Decoration and Song (for “I’m Just Ken”).

American Fiction, The Color Purple, Poor Things, Killers of The Flower Moon (for the late Robbie Robertson’s final score) John Wick: Chapter 4 and The Creator also are being honored in the feature film categories, while Anselm, Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie and American Symphony are being recognized for achievement in documentaries.

Honorees will be tributed at the gala event at American Cinematheque’s newly restored (in conjunction with Netflix) Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood on January 19, 2024.

Talent behind movies including Barbie, Oppenheimer and Maestro are among the honorees for the American Cinematheque’s third annual “Tribute to the Crafts,” which will be held Jan. 19 at the newly renovated Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood.

The event — which will be co-hosted by producers and American Cinematheque board members Franklin Leonard and Paula Wagner — will celebrate individuals in 15 categories including Oppenheimer editor Jennifer Lame, Poor Things costume designer Holly Waddington and late Killers of the Flower Moon composer Robbie Robertson.

Additionally, Academy Award-winning sound mixer Kevin O’Connell will receive a Career Achievement Award for his work, which spans 270 films over three decades. This year, O’Connell worked on projects including Oppenheimer, Barbie, Gran Turismo, Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret and Cocaine Bear.

The tale of the Baba Yaga seemingly concludes with John's death at the end of John Wick: Chapter 4, but the impact that John Wick as a character and his series have had on action movies is still immense. For what could very well be the final major set piece in the mainline "John Wick" series (spinoffs are coming), it makes sense that director Chad Stahelski and his incredible team of stunt performers would want to create the biggest, loudest scene they could. The climax ends up being a triptych of a sequence that takes place at three different locations: the Arc de Triomphe, an abandoned house of some kind, and finally the massive staircase leading to Sacré-Cœr. One of the more interesting actors to watch over the past few years has been Keanu Reeves, with a filmography that includes dramas such as My Own Private Idaho to action films such as Speed to science fiction films such as The Matrix. What the actor has yet to do, however, is take the directorial reins of a film, something he looks to change with his next project. Titled Man of Tai Chi, the film is written by Michael G. Making his directorial debut, Keanu Reeves reunites with fight choreographer Woo-ping Yuen, who helped create the action sequences in The Matrix, for the upcoming action-thriller Man of Tai Chi. It looks like Keanu Reeves will be able to fulfill his own post-"Matrix" prophecy, as The Weinstein Company's Radius-twc has acquired the rights to his directorial debut, "Man of Tai Chi."

The deal was inked at the Cannes Film Festival, where coveted distribution deals are commonplace. Deadline.com reports that the offer involves a "low seven-figure minimum guarantee."

"Man of Tai Chi," which had its trailer debut online last month, is set in modern-day Beijing. The movie depicts the story of a martial-arts aficionado who takes his tai chi skills to an underworld fight club. Reeves plays the villain who forces people to fight to their death.

RADiUS has slated a fourth quarter 2013 release for Reeves' film. Variety is reporting that Keanu Reeves has enlisted the services of Uwais for his forthcoming action/drama Man of Tai Chi. Although it was widely reported last June that Lionsgate intended to split Mockingjay, the third book in Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games trilogy, into two films, Nina Jacobson, the producer who has been credited with discovering the series, says that decision is "not set in stone" and they are "still figuring it all out."

While those early reports of turning the series of three books into four eventual movies involved splitting Mockingjay in two, similar to what was done with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Jacobson told MTV during The Hunger Games' premiere this past Monday that the decision will depend on the reception of the first film, set for release next week. "Hopefully, people love this movie enough to demand the next one," she said. "Go make that one. Figure out what to do from there."

According to Variety, Lionsgate U.K. has opted to shave seven seconds off Gary Ross' adaptation of The Hunger Games for Brit audiences in order to achieve a 12A classification in the territory.

The film, which has received a PG-13 rating in the U.S. from the MPAA, was originally given an uncut 15 certificate from the British Board of Film Classification, but Lionsgate was keen to "achieve a particular category" to reach a wider audience in the U.K.

Kids under the age of 12 are allowed to watch 12A films at cinemas if they are taken by an adult. According to the BBFC, "a number of cuts were made in one scene to reduce...

A new one-sheet for The Hunger Games has taken aim online in honor of the film's just wrapped eight-city tour, and we have it here for you to decide whether or not it's a bull's-eye.
