The 10 Highest-Grossing Movies of 2024
Image
2024 was a great year for movie fans, delivering a combination of instant classics, blockbuster hits, and well-received sequels, from Nosferatu and Longlegs to Twisters and Alien: Romulus. While some of the year's best movies weren't blockbuster hits, others crossed box office records, delivering fan service and entertainment for various fan bases. The year has been perfect for large franchises.

Although not a surprise, 2024 marks a rarity for Hollywood as a year when all of the US' ten highest-grossing movies are sequels, without exception. From long-awaited superhero team-ups to continuations of iconic family animated movies, the year has raked in billions for major studios, affirming the industry's focus on major franchises. Financial success is no guarantee of quality one way or the other, but the year has produced plenty of successful and entertaining films.

Actors That Fans Didn't Realize Starred in Several 2024 Movies
Image
In another distinctive year for movies, 2024 featured many actors in Hollywood getting very booked and busy. It is typical for an actor to have one or two projects for them to stand out in the year, yet some actors go beyond and star in three or more movies. Because 2024 became crowded with new cinematic features, most viewers didn't realize they saw one actor multiple times.

These actors in 2024 showcased more of their range. They could transition from a spectacular blockbuster to a more character-driven drama or even an animated feature. Acting veterans like Willem Dafoe and Giancarlo Esposito and continuously rising stars such as Margaret Qualley and Fred Hechinger are just a few of several performers who worked extra hard during this particular year.

Deadpool & Wolverine Dethroned on Streaming Chart by Another Blockbuster Sequel
Image
This summers blockbuster hit Deadpool & Wolverine has been overtaken as the No. 1 most popular rental on Amazon by another box office hit, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, per Forbes. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, starring Jenna Ortega, Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder, landed on the No. 1 spot on Prime Videos Top 10 List, relegating the Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman-led Deadpool & Wolverine to the No. 2 spot on the list.

The fact that Halloween is so close may have something to do with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice dethroning "Marvel Jesus, perhaps because the sequel offers a more family-friendly, yet spooky alternative to the R-rated Deadpool & Wolverine. The original 1988 Beetlejuice is also on Amazons Top 10 at No. 7.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Closes in on Becoming Franchise Star's Biggest Box Office Hit
Image
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice keeps scaring up impressive numbers at the box office, proving a worthy and successful sequel to the cult classic, Beetlejuice. For Catherine O'Hara, a mainstay in both films, the Beetlejuice sequel looks set to earn her a new all-time commercial milestone.

Per Collider, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has now earned $266 million domestically since its Sept. 6 debut across U.S. cinemas. The sequel is now O'Hara's second-highest-grossing movie at the domestic box office in the Canadian actor's 44-year acting career. While there is time for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice to catch Home Alone in the top spot, its box office momentum will likely slow down now that the film is available to rent/purchase digitally.

Forgotten Tim Burton Film Tops Netflix Streaming Chart

Netflixs No. 1 movie is an eight-year-old Tim Burton flick that has been slept on - Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. The 2016 film directed by Burton and written by Jane Goldman is the most-watched movie on Netflix currently, having hit the streamer at the beginning of October, reports ShortList. The success of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children since coming to Netflix, may be in part due to the box office success that is the recent Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, also directed by Burton. The latter has grossed more than $400 million globally.

Transformers One Is Upset at Box Office by Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Unbelievably, the ghost with the most got the better of the mighty Autobots and Decepticons. According to the estimates, the Beetlejuice sequel will squeak its way into the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office with $26 million (per The Numbers).

Meanwhile, Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson and Brian Tyree Henrys Transformers origin story will end up ranking at No. 2 with $25 million. Transformers One started off by winning the top spot at the box office on Thursday, September 19, during its preview screenings ($3.4 million) and again on Friday with $9.6 million, but everything changed on Saturday. Does Beetlejuice 2 Live Up to the Original?
Image
Tim Burtons Beetlejuice was released into theaters on March 30, 1988, over 36 years ago. The movie starred Michael Keaton as the titular bio-exorcist along with Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis as a married couple who seek out his services. It also introduced the world to a then-unknown Winona Ryder, playing the iconic Lydia Deetz. It was only the second feature-length theatrical film that Tim Burton had directed at the time, the first being 1985s Pee-Wees Big Adventure, and it was arguably the film that would make Burton a household name.

Beetlejuice helped create and solidify his signature aesthetic, and since its release, it has gone on to be a revered cult classic. Its one of those movies that people have grown up with and then gone on to share with their own kids. For many, it is even a yearly Halloween re-watch, which makes the timing for Burtons upcoming sequel just in...

Greedy People review – blood and chaos overlay bizarrely Coenesque crime caper
Joseph Gordon-Levitt
A strong cast led by Joseph Gordon-Levitt are not enough to bring supense to a story where the local hitman advertises in a paint store

This under-par comedy noir from screenwriter Mike Vukadinovich and director Potsy Ponciroli feels like a script that the Coen brothers might have taken on while in one of their slack periods – and not just because Coen regular Tim Blake Nelson is in it.

Himesh Patel plays Will, a nervous rookie cop with a pregnant wife, Paige (Lily James); he has a new job in a sleepy, sweet little town; his cop partner is to be hardbitten cynic Terry, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, with whom he has a “training day” relationship on their first day out on patrol. Terry shows him the ropes, and says how easy it all is in this no-crime backwater. But while Terry is one day busy having illicit sex (while supposedly...

The Beetlejuice Movies Are Actually About the Horrors of Marriage
Image
If marriage is hell, then Tim Burton has a funny way of showing it in the beloved Beetlejuice movies. With the recent success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, older and newer fans alike have responded well to the wacky horror-comedy sequel 36 years after the original Beetlejuice made the prospect of marriage a legitimate nightmare. Of course, the popular 2024 sequel also revolves around a garish wedding ceremony that features a showstopping musical number, connecting both films through Lydia (Winona Ryder) and Beetlejuice's (Michael Keaton) macabre matrimony.

Yet, upon closer inspection, one could argue that the underlying theme in the Beetlejuice movies equates marriage with death, hell, reincarnation, and other nightmarish qualities that threaten to trap Lydia inside a purgatorial limbo forever. For Burton, Beetlejuice provides an artistic template to critique the horrors of marriage as a business contract devoid of true love, doing so in playfully subliminal ways that somehow remain tender and romantic.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Completely Ignores Time Dilation From the Original
Image
After a 36-year hiatus, Beetlejuice returned to the big screen on September 6, 2024, and easily exorcised its box-office competitors. In the acclaimed sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Tim Burton hit the right balance of horror and humor, allowing the original cast members to shine while introducing new characters and pushing the mythological universe forward. Yet, for all the zany cartoonish fun and macabre fright, fans have noticed a detail regarding the purgatorial time crunch from the 1988 original that is oddly missing from the amusing sequel.

In Beetlejuice, ghostly residents Adam (Alec Baldwin) and Barbara Maitland (Geena Davis) step outside their home for a moment and are suddenly transported to an otherworldly desert environment where time moves much faster than on Earth. When they return home, they realize two hours have passed despite being away for mere minutes. A similar situation occurs in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice without the time-crunch, leading to some fan complaints about inconsistent continuity.

Beetlejuice 2 Ending, Explained: Will There Be a Third Movie?
Image
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has finally hit theaters, and based on the early box office projections, audiences will be rushing out to see the ghost with the most. The original Beetlejuice is a nearly perfect movie, a horror-comedy hybrid that has endured as a modern classic and has found fans young for the past 36 years. Plans for a sequel had been in development hell since the 1990s, including a pitch called Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is now arriving in theaters in a very different cinematic landscape than its predecessor did back in 1988.

Beetlejuice 2 Breaks Record as Tim Burton's Highest Opening Day Ever
Image
The long 36-year wait for Tim Burton to get things together for a sequel to 1986s Beetlejuice has been worth it for many fans, and has already broken a career-best record for the director to boot. After scoring highly with critics and managing to avoid disappointing long-term fans, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has also given Burton the biggest opening day gross of his career beating even his eventual $1 billion-earner Alice in Wonderland.

According to Variety, the sequel followed up its $13 million previews with a huge $41.5 million Friday haul, not only making it Burtons personal best opening day, but also falling in just behind the $50.4 million haul of 2017s It to land it a place as the second-highest September opening of all time. Not bad for a movie that spent many years in development hell and seemed destined to be one of the great what if movies of Hollywood.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Global Box Office Opening Weekend Nearly Doubles Og Movie's Entire Gross
Image
The Beetlejuice Beetlejuice box office has already grossed nearly double the original Tim Burton movie. Burton has returned for the legacy sequel to his iconic horror comedy, which features the return of Michael Keaton as Betelgeuse, Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz, and Catherine O'Hara as Delia Deetz in addition to re-teaming the director with Wednesday star Jenna Ortega. The Beetlejuice Beetlejuice box office had big shoes to fill, as the original movie was the 10th highest-grossing movie of 1988 worldwide, grossing roughly $75 million.

Warner Bros. Discovery has reported that the worldwide opening weekend for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is projected to reach a total of $145.4 million by the end of Sunday. This comes from a total of $110 million at the domestic box office and an additional $35.4 million from 69 other territories, representing 75% of the movie's international business. This total means that the movie has nearly doubled the entire run of the 1988 original in the span of just three days.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuices Early Box Office Teases Huge Opening Weekend
Image
Theres nothing scary about these sandworm-sized box office numbers. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is finally in theaters, and the long-awaited sequel has hit the ground running. Director Tim Burtons new film brought in $13 million domestically during its preview screenings on Thursday, and the Michael Keaton-led Beetlejuice (1988) sequel is now en route to making nearly $100 million over its opening weekend (per Deadline).

At the time of this writing, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is forecast to bring in an estimated $38 million to $40+ million on Friday, September 6 alone. And that same source's prediction is tracking the Burton and Keaton cinematic collaboration to haul in somewhere between $90 million and $95 million during its debut, which is some 36 years in the making. However, theres definitely a chance that the Beetlejuice follow-up could make even more of a Saturn-sized splash without any assistance from its international numbers.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score Just Narrowly Beats Original Movies 82%
Image
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has earned a better Rotten Tomatoes score than the original horror-comedy. The movie is a legacy sequel to the Tim Burton classic featuring the return of Michael Keaton as the bio-exorcist Betelgeuse, Winona Ryder as former goth teenager Lydia Deetz, and Catherine O'Hara as her stepmother Delia Deetz alongside new characters played by Jenna Ortega, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Willem Dafoe, Danny DeVito, and more. The Beetlejuice Beetlejuice release comes almost 40 years after the original, which premiered on March 30, 1988.

On the first full day of the theatrical run of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Rotten Tomatoes has already received more than 1,000 user reviews for the legacy sequel. This has given the 2024 movie a Popcornmeter score of 86%, which is 4% above the 82% score received by the original 1988 movie. Because the original movie has received more than 250,000 ratings during its lifetime on the review aggregator platform, it remains to be seen if the sequel...

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice conjures up $12 million in early Thursday box office previews
Image
And thus begins the start of spooky season! Halloween is next month, but fans of ghosts and ghouls are able to start getting their fix with the release of Tim Burton‘s long-awaited sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which was 36 years in the making. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was in development hell for decades before it finally got made. In 1990, Jonathan Gems was hired to write a sequel that was going to be titled Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian. Burton considered having Daniel Waters rewrite that script. Pamela Norris did rewrite it, and Warner Bros. offered Kevin Smith the chance to do another rewrite. He turned it down. Seth Grahame-Smith was hired to write and produce a new version of a sequel in 2011. Mike Vukadinovich was brought on to rewrite his script in 2017.

With all the numerous script revisions that went into making sure the sequel could lovingly match the original, Tim Burton would admit he...

Michael Keaton Wants to Be Known As Michael Douglas Again
Image
The name Michael Keaton could soon begin to disappear from movie credits as the actor has decided the time is right for him to claim back his real nameor at least a version of it. After 50 years of being known as Michael Keaton in blockbuster movies such as Beetlejuice and Batman, as well as finding recent critical acclaim in movies like Birdman, the actor wants to go back to his real name of Michael Douglas - or Michael Keaton Douglas, as he has decided to use as a compromise.

Of course, this causes a little bit of confusion with another famous Michael Douglas , he of Basic Instinct and Wall Street fame. In fact, it was because the Screen Actors Guild denied Keaton the opportunity of using his birth name, due to Douglas already being a listed actor, that he sought out his current reasonable name. He recounted to People the...

Michael Keaton Credits Batmans Tim Burton with the Success of the Superhero Genre
Image
He changed everything where superhero films are concerned, and its all because of Batman (1989). Before being conjured up to reappear on the big screen in Beetlejuices long-awaited sequel, the actor behind the ghost with the most, Michael Keaton, joined Beetlejuice Beetlejuice co-star Winona Ryder on the Hollywood Walk of Fame to honor their director Tim Burton, as he finally received his well-deserved star. And during Keatons speech, the thespian gave Burton all the credit where the success of todays superhero films is concerned. Keaton said (per Variety):

I just want to finish here in a minute by talking about the whole Batman thing [] What that spawned: There are a lot of people making a lot of money out there with their superhero movies because of his choice and his vision, because he changed everything. Ive said it a hundred times, but its true. The man is a genre unto himself.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Review: Talented Leads Propel a Satisfactory Sequel
Image
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice recaptures the macabre humor, ghoulish fantasy, and literally eye-popping visual effects of the classic original film. What's noticeably missing in a satisfactory, if not spectacular, sequel is the ensemble cast's overall chemistry and a truly innovative plot that wowed 1988 audiences. The new supporting characters are hit or miss. Willem Dafoe's B-movie cop nearly steals the show, while a goth-gorgeous Monica Bellucci's soul-sucking villain and Jenna Ortega's teenage-angst, Wednesday-light impersonation lacks creativity. Thankfully, a still devilish Michael Keaton, the brilliant Catherine O'Hara, and director Tim Burton haven't lost their freaky mojo.

Lydia Deetz (Ryder) continues to see ghosts but has cashed in on her abilities with a popular paranormal talk show. Rory (Justin Theroux), her clingy boyfriend and TV producer, keeps the visions flowing at all costs. Astrid (Ortega), her disbelieving daughter, hates his guts and considers her mother a total fraud. Why can't Lydia conjure...

Jenna Ortega & Catherine O'Hara Praise Tim Burton's 'Lopsided' Vision
Image
Theres no denying it. A Tim Burton film is unmistakably his own, and the directors long-awaited sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, is no exception, according to stars Catherine OHara and Jenna Ortega. The visionary director of Batman, Beetlejuice (1988) and Edward Scissorhands not only provides his casts with a sensory smrgsbord of practical sets to perform on a Picasso-eque playground but the filmmaker is a blast to collaborate with. But, when asked what the most Tim Burton thing on the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice set was, OHara responded by saying (per ComicBook.com):

"The whole environment. It starts with his drawings, the lopsided floors and walls and the just beautiful images and the live puppetry and great effects, in-camera effects. He just gives you as much of the final visuals as you can get on a set."

Ortega, who joins the Beetlejuice family in the sequel as Lydia Deetzs (Winona Ryder) daughter, Astrid, added...

Beetlejuice 3 Rumours Get Wry Reaction From Director Tim Burton
Image
Beloved director Tim Burton believes that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (the upcoming sequel to his 1988 classic) will be his last contribution to the franchise. It's taken 36 years for Michael Keaton's Betelgeuse to return to our screens, as the actor is being joined by Winona Ryder and Catherine O'Hara, with Jenna Ortega joining the cast as the newcomer to the franchise. Fans are elated that Burton has returned to direct the long-awaited sequel, but any hopes of a threequel which may come from the new movie's success have now seemingly been squashed.

Speaking to THR at the London premiere of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Burton reacted to the idea of Beetlejuice 3, revealing that it is incredibly unlikely that he will direct a third installment. The director referred to the great length of time it has taken him to come up with a satisfying concept for the soon-to-be-released sequel, and exclaimed that he'll have been...

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Is Missing These Vital Characters, Tim Burton Explains Why
Image
Warning: This article contains mild Spoilers for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice sees Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara, and Michael Keaton return to Tim Burton's world one more time...but two of the most important characters from the original movie are missing in Burton's long-awaited sequel. As Beetlejuice Beetlejuice returns the Deetz family to Winter River, Adam (Alec Baldwin) and Barbara Maitland (Geena Davis) are noticeably absent from the new movie. The original film centered on the Maitlands desperately enlisting Betelgeuse's (Keaton) help to prevent their family home from being sold after their deaths. So why are they nowhere to be found in the sequel?

Speaking to People Magazine, Burton revealed that he never intended for the Maitlands to return in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. During development on the movie, Burton reasoned that including them for the sake of fan service felt like checking boxes on a list of sequel necessities. But...

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice's Rotten Tomatoes Score Floats out of Venice Film Festival
Image
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is the latest in a long line of legacy sequels to attempt to recapture magic from more than three decades ago, and the first reviews of Tim Burtons return to the afterlife seem to suggest he has managed to pull it off. With the manic energy of Michael Keaton, the support of franchise returnees Winona Ryder and Catherine OHara, and a roster of capable newcomers including Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe, Justin Theroux, and Monica Bellucci, say his name three times because the Ghost with the Most is a long way from being toast.

The Venice Film Festival played host to the world premiere of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and as reviews from the event began to trickle onto Rotten Tomatoes, it became clear that this movie is everything many fans have been asking for since 1988 introduced the world to its one and only bio-exorcist. Now, as unlikely as it seemed...

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice first reactions indicate this sequel was worth the wait
Image
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the long-awaited sequel to director Tim Burton’s 1988 classic Beetlejuice (watch it Here), is set to reach theatres on September 6th – and today the first reactions from critics who have had the chance to watch the movie have appeared online! You can see a collection of these reactions below, but we’ll start off here with what JoBlo’s own Eric Walkuski had to say about the film: “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is an enjoyable, fast-paced bit of lunacy from Tim Burton that should please the many who’ve waited decades for its arrival. It certainly leans into nostalgia throughout, but it also manages to have some bizarre new tricks up its sleeve; it’s not just another retread playing the Greatest Hits from the original. The returning characters are a sight for sore eyes, with Keaton and Ryder not missing a beat reprising their iconic roles, though it’s...

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Review: Sequel Pitfalls Cant Keep Down Tim Burtons Most Joyful Movie In Years
Image
There's something magical about Beetlejuice. Revisiting it for the first time in years made me wonder why my sister and I had it in such regular rotation throughout our childhood turns out, it was all us. My parents' opinions on it ranged from lightly positive (Dad) to fairly negative (Mom), but we couldn't get enough of it. And that makes sense to me. Beetlejuice is more than just creatively odd. It's whimsical enough to feel safe, but also sexual enough to feel dangerous. Watch it young, and it's like peeking into a world you aren't supposed to see yet.

The new sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, is missing that edge. It's tamer, more straightforward, and far more willing to hold your hand as you traverse the story. Put the two films side-by-side, and you'll see traces of director Tim Burton's journey to the mainstream over the intervening 36 years.

Tim Burton Reveals the Issues With Having a 'Burtonesque' Movie Style
Image
Tim Burton is one of the most prolific filmmakers of all time with one of the most identified styles, but he certainly doesn't like the use of the word "Burtonesque." Tim Burton's latest film, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, is a sequel to his second feature film, 1988's Beetlejuice. Over a four-decade-long career, Burton's work on films like Batman, Edward Scissorhands, and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, to name a few, have made Burton's signature style one of the most famous in the world, one where even if an average person doesn't know the name of most filmmaker they can easily identify the work of Tim Burton.

Beetlejuice Return Found Winona Ryder Struggling to Envision Her Character
Image
Beetlejuice's Lydia Deetz grew up differently than Winona Ryder expected. The actress, who first portrayed the beloved character in Tim Burton's 1988 classic, returns as Lydia for the anticipated Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. It's been 36 years since fans initially met Lydia, the sensitive goth girl at the center of Tim Burton's iconic film, and they'll have their expectations of how Lydia should be as an adult. As for Ryder, she says that envisioning Lydia all grown up "was hard to imagine." Speaking with Slash Film, Ryder shared:

"I think certainly, I never pictured Lydia either having children or in any type of relationship. I just always thought she was just probably in her own world as she got older. Just sort of in the attic and happy, but alone."

Greedy People Review | Coen-Brother Vibes Help Boost Hillbilly Noir
Image
Hillbilly thrillers (or hillbillers) is making a comeback, it seems. Two of the best movies of the year have already tackled that kind of vibe the incredible Laroy, Texas, and the stellar ensemble film The Last Stop in Yuma County. Now, the cartoonish nature of Lionsgate's soon-to-be underrated Greedy People might be dubbed its own brand of Southern noir, given that its elements seem to tug its tone all over the place.

Some of it works, some is perhaps too derivative. Brace yourselves for a whole lot of moving parts, including some virtually blink-and-you-miss-it cameos here and there, followed by gravely serious sequences of heartfelt drama that may feel out of place juxtaposed to some vintage Coen brothers humor and tension This comedy-drama dynamic may make Potsy Ponciroli's latest film, from a script by Mike Vukadinovich, feel like a knockoff take combines winning elements from different movies but as Russell Crowe once said,...

‘Greedy People’ Review: All This Fictional Malfeasance Pales Next to Netflix’s True Crime Offerings
Image
In “Old Henry,” director Potsy Ponciroli spilled an inordinate amount of blood on and around the porch of a frontier homestead. “And for what? For a little bit of money,” as Fargo police chief Marge Gunderson put it after solving a no-less-senseless crime a century later. Reuniting with Coen brothers collaborator Tim Blake Nelson for his second feature, “Greedy People,” Ponciroli trades the lawless West for the well-policed present-day Northeast, setting a darkly comic cash grab in the South Carolina town of Providence.

This time around, Ponciroli is directing someone else’s script, and even though the new film feels even more Coen-esque than his first, it lacks the blunt, remorseless quality that set “Old Henry” apart. That film tipped its hat to its influences; this one seems to be borrowing the whole damn uniform. Just look at the way it begins and ends with a deceptively effective female police...

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: Tim Burton promises Beetlejuice is still politically incorrect, has not evolved
Image
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the long-awaited sequel to director Tim Burton’s 1988 classic Beetlejuice (watch it Here), is set to reach theatres on September 6th – and when we catch up with the title character, as played by Michael Keaton, we can expect him to be exactly the same character he was when we first met him 36 years ago. Speaking to Collider, Burton promised that Beetlejuice is still politically incorrect and has not undergone any sort of character evolution over the decades.

Burton said, “Michael [Keaton] and I both love the fact that he was politically incorrect then, and he’s politically incorrect now. [Laughs] I’m just laughing because somebody asked him the other day, ‘Michael, how does Beetlejuice’s character evolve?’ And we just started laughing because he doesn’t evolve — that’s the whole point!“

It’s giving Coen Brothers, That’s the immediate vibe of “Greedy People,” a new crime comedy from director Potsy Ponciroli (the revisionist Wester “Old Henry”) and playwright and screenwriter Michael Vukadinovich (“Kidding”). Greedy People Review: A Movie That Struggles To Find Itself
Image
The following contains spoilers from Greedy People, in theaters and available digitally on Aug. 23, 2024. It also contains discussion of violence.

At a certain point, Greedy People becomes as frustrating as the characters it follows. The Lionsgate movie starts as a small-town comedy with an appropriately quirky cast, but then races past dark comedy into being just dark and unsatisfying. Think of it as Happy, Texas on a drunken bender or a Coen Brothers film on steroids.

The film follows Will Shelley, a cop who's just moved to Providence with his pregnant wife Paige. Unprepared for his new gig, he makes a terrible mistake on his first day that leads to a woman's death -- and is convinced by his freewheeling partner Terry Brogan to cover it up, as well as take the million dollars found in her house. From that moment on, Mike Vukadinovich's script hits every expected story...
