One might think that this limited scope would allow the filmmakers to explore this era of Marley’s life with some measure of specificity, whether in the challenges his marriage faced as his wife, Rita (Lashana Lynch), spent much of this time in America and Jamaica, or how the fractured state of his homeland and his love for its people informed his landmark 1977 album, Exodus. But Green’s shaggy, disjointed film is less interested in the complexities of Marley’s personal or professional life than it is in presenting him as a hero and an inspiration.

Bob Marley: One Love follows the luminous reggae icon during a period of violent political upheaval in Jamaica and his exile in London after a shocking assassination attempt. These seminal years before his tragic death from cancer resulted in the production of Exodus, dubbed by Time magazine as the greatest album of the 20th century. One Love's sublime lead performances, soul-stirring musical soundtrack, and depiction of Marley's Rastafarian beliefs are unfortunately told in a Wikipedia-styled narrative of biopic bullet points. The film never explores Marley in-depth and often breezes over critical events of his storied life.

An opening card sets the stage for a tragedy to come. In 1976, Jamaica was being ripped apart by warring gangs loyal to the People's National Party (Pnp) leader, Prime Minister Michael Manley, and his political adversary, the Jamaica Labour Party's (Jlp) Edward Seaga. Bob Marley (Kingsley Ben-Adir) was already a global superstar.

In the years since his premature death, reggae legend Bob Marley has been culturally defanged into a benevolent good-times symbol safe for dorm rooms and yuppie living rooms everywhere. Marley’s string of popular songs, many of which were compiled in his posthumous greatest hits collection “Legend,” turned him into one of the best-selling artists in the world, but this mass-market commercial appeal also necessitated a dilution of his radicalism and spiritual essence. Though many can probably identify “Jamming” or “Is This Love?” as a Marley tune if it was played for them, he’s still probably associated more with generic weed culture than any type of revolution, which is an obvious shame given the political roots of reggae and Jamaica’s storied history.

It makes some kind of sense that “Bob Marley: One Love” is being released at this time of heightened political consciousness. Granted, most contemporary music biopics...

During a 1979 interview with Bob Marley, New Zealand journalist Dylan Taite asked the musician about his early exposure to different genres. Taite wanted to know if Marley had dabbled in rock or soul before settling on reggae. Marley rubbed his chin and fixed his gaze off camera as he considered the question. “I wasn’t really into dem tings,” he said, “I was really into spiritual music, you know, cause it get more revolutionized.” For Marley, music was a transcendent experience with political potential.

Reinaldo Marcus Green’s Bob Marley: One Love tends unevenly to this idea. The film builds a portrait of Marley (Kingsley Ben-Adir) around the creation of the Jamaican star and his band’s ninth studio album. The biopic has Marley overcoming adversity, including a failed assassination attempt, to rise to musical fame with a message of love and unity in dangerous times. “There’s a war going on. How I can bring peace? I can’t even get peace for myself,” a fretting Marley says at one point in the trailer.

We first got a glimpse of Reinaldo Marcus Green’s biopic on Bob Marley back in July when a tantalising teaser trailer for Bob Marley: One Love was revealed. Paramount Pictures have now released a full trailer which gives us a better look at Kingsley Ben-Adir as the iconic musician.

The film will focus on Marley’s rise to fame, but also the struggles that came with it. As seen in the trailer, Marley was the subject of assassination attempts, but his positive outlook on life never waivered. Kingsley Ben-Adir portrays reggae superstar and counterculture icon Bob Marley in the first trailer for the forthcoming biopic Bob Marley: One Love.

Set for release Jan. 12, 2024, the Paramount Pictures feature centers on the life of Marley, from the early days of his career to his death in 1981. Reinaldo Marcus Green (King Richard) directs from a script by Zach Baylin, Frank E. Flowers and Terence Winter.

“Reggae is a people music,” Ben-Adir says as Marley in the trailer. “People coming together.”

Paramount Pictures has dropped the first teaser trailer for “Bob Marley: One Love,” its upcoming biopic about the Jamaican singer and songwriter that’s expected to be released in 2024.

The trailer starts as a celebration of Marley and his legacy, as portrayed by “Peaky Blinders” and “The Oa” star Kingsley Ben-Adir. It jumps between Marley playing to concert after concert of adoring fans as the legendary artist’s music plays in the background. As the trailer continues it takes on a darker tone as it delves into Jamaica’s civil war during the 1970s.

It all comes to a head right before the One Love Peace Concert. As someone off screen asks Marley why he’s going to return to Jamaica after there was an assassination attempt on him and his wife, Ben-Adir as Marley calmly replies, “My life is not important to me. My life is for people.”

After portraying Malcolm X in “One Night in Miami” and showcasing his musical chops in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming “Barbie,” Ben-Adir takes on the life and legacy of reggae icon Marley in “Bob Marley: One Love.” The musical biopic is helmed by “King Richard” director Reinaldo Marcus Green, with a script written by Emmy winner Terence Winter along with Zach Baylin and Frank E. Flowers.

“One Love” centers on the rise of Marley’s (Ben-Adir) career, including his 1976 assassination attempt. Marley died in 1981 from melanoma.

Paramount Pictures’ Bob Marley biopic is coming into focus.

The studio debuted the first-look at the Reinaldo Marcus Green film on Thursday during its CinemaCon presentation inside the Colosseum at Caesars Palace with a little help from the late icon’s son. Ziggy Marley, one of the producers of the project, introduced the never-before-seen footage while also revealing the biopic’s new title, Bob Marley: One Love.

“It’s great to be here today on behalf of my father,” Ziggy said upon taking the stage. “I’m here as a producer of this film but also as a steward of my father’s incredibly legacy.”

He added that his father’s message of unity and love is more urgent as ever in today’s times, and with this new biopic, people will be able to deepen their connection with the late icon and learn more about the adversity he faced...

CinemaCon was Jammin’ at the first footage Paramount revealed for its Bob Marley biopic, which the studio revealed is titled “Bob Marley: One Love.”

Kingsley Ben-Adir, known for the “High Fidelity” series remake and who will be seen in the upcoming “Barbie” movie, stars as the reggae legend in this musical film that’s directed and written by Reinaldo Marcus Green (“King Richard”).

The teaser footage for “One Love,” which Paramount screened on Thursday morning during its presentation on the final day of CinemaCon but not yet online, featured Ben-Adir singing and also showed Marley’s journey from a laid back artist to a revolutionary as a result of the violence that followed him, including the assassination attempt he survived in 1976. The trailer moves from the levity of “Jammin'” in the soundtrack and a more ordinary music biopic to the emotional heft of “Exodus” as the trailer deepens in seriousness...

Exclusive: Tosin Cole, Michael Gandolfini, Nadine Marshall, James Norton and Anthony Welsh have joined the cast of the untitled Bob Marley biopic for Paramount. Kingsley Ben-Adir has been set to portray the legendary reggae star, with Lashana Lynch playing his wife Rita. King Richard director Reinaldo Marcus Green is helming.

Rita, Ziggy and Cedella Marley will also produce on behalf of Tuff Gong as will Jeremy Kleiner and Dede Gardner for Plan B. Robert Teitel also will produce. The script is by Green and Zach Baylin.

Bob Marley died of cancer in 1981 at age 36, but in that short lifetime he changed the landscape of music, introducing generations to reggae with such songs as “Get Up, Stand Up,” “One Love,” “No Woman, No Cry,” “Could You Be Loved,” “Buffalo Soldier,” “Jammin’” and “Redemption Song.”

The film will bow January 12, 2024.
