‘The Buccaneers’ Season 2 Star Christina Hendricks & Creators Unpack Episode 7 Court Scenes Reflecting “Modern-Day Rape Or Abuse Trials”
Image
Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers for Episode 7 of Season 2 of The Buccaneers.

Just as there are many elaborate weddings in Apple TV+’s The Buccaneers, Season 2 has made way for some equally complex divorce proceedings, culminating in a court battle between Patricia “Patti” St. George and her unfaithful husband Colonel Tracy St. George in Episode 7.

Divorce during The Gilded Age, the period in which the show is set was only given permission on the grounds that there was adultery, and even then, there had to be evidence. HBO’s The Gilded Age series tackles the same thing in Season 3, which is currently rolling out.

“We did a lot of research about how women had to prove that an infidelity had happened. They couldn’t just say it, they had to prove it. In New York at the time, people would even hire people to come in and say that...

Bob Marley: One Love Review: Reinaldo Marcus Green’s Hagiography of a Reggae Legend
Reinaldo Marcus Green
Reinaldo Marcus Green’s Bob Marley: One Love focuses primarily on Marley’s (Kingsley Ben-Adir) life between 1976 and 1978, during which time the reggae legend fled Jamaica for London and his homeland was plagued by rampant violence and political upheaval. One might think that this limited scope would allow the filmmakers to explore this era of Marley’s life with some measure of specificity, whether in the challenges his marriage faced as his wife, Rita (Lashana Lynch), spent much of this time in America and Jamaica, or how the fractured state of his homeland and his love for its people informed his landmark 1977 album, Exodus. But Green’s shaggy, disjointed film is less interested in the complexities of Marley’s personal or professional life than it is in presenting him as a hero and an inspiration.

One Love’s hagiographic bent is symptomatic of the modern-day biopic, but the shapelessness of...

Bob Marley: One Love Review | Uneven Biopic with Great Music
Image
Bob Marley: One Love follows the luminous reggae icon during a period of violent political upheaval in Jamaica and his exile in London after a shocking assassination attempt. These seminal years before his tragic death from cancer resulted in the production of Exodus, dubbed by Time magazine as the greatest album of the 20th century. One Love's sublime lead performances, soul-stirring musical soundtrack, and depiction of Marley's Rastafarian beliefs are unfortunately told in a Wikipedia-styled narrative of biopic bullet points. The film never explores Marley in-depth and often breezes over critical events of his storied life.

An opening card sets the stage for a tragedy to come. In 1976, Jamaica was being ripped apart by warring gangs loyal to the People's National Party (Pnp) leader, Prime Minister Michael Manley, and his political adversary, the Jamaica Labour Party's (Jlp) Edward Seaga. Bob Marley (Kingsley Ben-Adir) was already a global superstar.

‘Bob Marley: One Love’ Review: This Bob Marley Biopic Fails to Get Up, Stand Up for Its Existence
Image
In the years since his premature death, reggae legend Bob Marley has been culturally defanged into a benevolent good-times symbol safe for dorm rooms and yuppie living rooms everywhere. Marley’s string of popular songs, many of which were compiled in his posthumous greatest hits collection “Legend,” turned him into one of the best-selling artists in the world, but this mass-market commercial appeal also necessitated a dilution of his radicalism and spiritual essence. Though many can probably identify “Jamming” or “Is This Love?” as a Marley tune if it was played for them, he’s still probably associated more with generic weed culture than any type of revolution, which is an obvious shame given the political roots of reggae and Jamaica’s storied history.

It makes some kind of sense that “Bob Marley: One Love” is being released at this time of heightened political consciousness. Granted, most contemporary music biopics...

‘Bob Marley: One Love’ Review: Kingsley Ben-Adir and Lashana Lynch Enliven a Stunted Biopic
Image
During a 1979 interview with Bob Marley, New Zealand journalist Dylan Taite asked the musician about his early exposure to different genres. Taite wanted to know if Marley had dabbled in rock or soul before settling on reggae. Marley rubbed his chin and fixed his gaze off camera as he considered the question. “I wasn’t really into dem tings,” he said, “I was really into spiritual music, you know, cause it get more revolutionized.” For Marley, music was a transcendent experience with political potential.

Reinaldo Marcus Green’s Bob Marley: One Love tends unevenly to this idea. The film builds a portrait of Marley (Kingsley Ben-Adir) around the creation of the Jamaican star and his band’s ninth studio album. Exodus was released in 1977 — two years before Bob Marley and the Wailers performed in New Zealand for the first time, and a year after an attempted assassination on the musician’s life.

Kingsley Ben-Adir Plays Defiant Bob Marley in Latest ‘One Love’ Biopic Trailer
Image
Peaky Blinders actor Kingsley Ben-Adir dons dreadlocks and speaks in a Jamaican patois to play a reggae legend in the latest trailer for Bob Marley: One Love, which dropped Tuesday.

The biopic has Marley overcoming adversity, including a failed assassination attempt, to rise to musical fame with a message of love and unity in dangerous times. “There’s a war going on. How I can bring peace? I can’t even get peace for myself,” a fretting Marley says at one point in the trailer.

The movie, based on real events, recounts a failed attempt to murder Marley in his home in Kingston, Jamaica, which only drove the reggae legend to double down on his mission to unify a divided nation with revolutionary music.

Produced in partnership with the Marley family, Bob Marley: One Love also stars Lashana Lynch as Rita Marley, the wife of the music superstar. “Sometimes the...

Kingsley Ben-Adir Brings Bob Marley To Life In The One Love Trailer
Image
If you've been catching up on end-of-year releases in theaters, chances are you've caught the trailer for "Bob Marley: One Love," the upcoming biopic from director Reinaldo Marcus Green. Kingsley Ben-Adir stars as Marley, the first actor to ever play the Jamaican musical legend, activism hero, and Rastafari icon in a feature film. Back in April, /Film's Ben Pearson attended CinemaCon in Las Vegas where he was given an exclusive first look at the film, which was produced by Marley's children and surviving family members, including his wife Rita Marley. As such, it was vital to the family that they had a say in who would play the titular figure.

Ahead of the film's release, Rotten Tomatoes released a featurette where Ziggy Marley discussed why Ben-Adir was the perfect actor for the role. "Kingsley does a great job in an artful way, not trying to mimic my father," he said.

Werner Vivier’s ‘Walls Like Windows’ Captures Our Acute Need for Human Connection and Empathy When Navigating Trauma
Image
The opening of Werner Vivier’s carefully crafted drama Walls Like Windows leads us down a seemingly familiar path as an older woman sits awkwardly with a younger escort, yet what follows quickly upends our preconceived presumptions as to where this situation is heading. Among so much more, Walls Like Windows explores the immense complexities of grief, and the additional trauma brought on when isolation is added into that most volatile of emotional states. To reveal more about what transpires between Maggie and Leon – both roles embodied with nuanced excellence by Juliet Stevenson and Anthony Welsh respectively – would be to rob you of the pleasure of unravelling the mystery at play between these two strangers. What I can say is that Vivier’s intricate writing and direction, naturalistic approach to lighting, and cinematography which expresses the shifting tones of the on screen relationship belies the fact that this is the...
