Apollo Management Int’l Branches Into Sales; Unveils Inaugural Slate With ‘Little Brother’ & ‘Scrap’
Image
Exclusive: L.A.-based company Apollo Management International (Ami) has launched a boutique sales division focused on indie features with notable cast and strong festival positioning.

Its inaugural slate comprises a quartet of titles spanning Sheridan O’Donnell’s Little Brother (outside of U.S.), Miguel Duran’s Adventure Tom, Vivian Kerr’s Scrap and Chris Messineo’s The Strange Dark.

“After nearly a decade in talent management and indie producing, launching the sales arm of Apollo management international was a very intentional move,” said Ami founder Greg Bekkers.

“I’ve spent years watching talented filmmakers and great films get lost in the noise, either mispositioned, undersold, or stuck in the wrong hands. I wanted to build something that doesn’t just sell movies but actually helps them reach the audiences they were made for.”

All four titles on the inaugural slate have enjoyed some exposure on the festival circuit and...

‘Roofman’ Trailer: Channing Tatum Is a Real-Life Felon in Derek Cianfrance’s Crime Drama
Image
Channing Tatum is going where he has never gone before on-screen: The actor/producer collaborates with legendary indie director Derek Cianfrance for crime drama “Roofman,” based on real-life felon Jeffrey Manchester. The film centers on Tatum’s depiction of Jeff, who was known for living in a Toys ’R’ Us store after escaping from prison. He sustained himself by breaking into more than 60 McDonald’s over the course of his crime career.

The first look at “Roofman” states that the film is “based on a true story *as told by a liar.” The film takes place over the course of six months in 2004, during which Jeff lived under the alias “John Zorn” in a North Carolina community. Kirsten Dunst portrays Leigh Wainscott, the divorced mom who works at Toys ’R’ Us and falls for Tatum’s character. Ben Mendelsohn, Lakeith Stanfield, Juno Temple, Melonie Diaz, Uzo Aduba, Lily Collias, Jimmy O. Yang,...

‘Happy Face’ Shows the ‘Unique and Strange’ Impact a Serial Killer Has on His Kids
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “Happy Face” Episode 4.

In this week’s episode of “Happy Face,” Melissa (Annaleigh Ashford) reconnects with her brother Shane (Philip Ettinger) after going public with the fact that their father is serial killer Keith Jesperson (Dennis Quaid).

TheWrap spoke to the real Melissa, Melissa G. Moore, as well as Ashford about the complicated relationship they have with their father and with each other.

“There are a lot of fictionalized series of serial killers, and we don’t [usually] see the serial killer portrayed as a parent or the relationships that they have with their family,” said Moore, noting that “Happy Face” also shows how Melissa and her family interact with the victim’s families.

“I just never felt seen watching any [other] shows,” said Moore, who is an executive producer on the series. “I always felt like I was alone and that I had an experience...

Happy Face episode 4 recap and review: A bombshell revelation
Image
This post contains spoilers from Paramount+'s Happy Face episode 4, "Controlled Burn."

One of the things I’m loving about Happy Face is how each episode ends: with a bombshell. We learned last week that Melissa’s (Annaleigh Ashford) brother was with their father in Texas when Heather Richmond was killed. In this episode 4 recap, Shane (Philip Ettinger) enters the picture, as does someone unexpected, Melissa confronts her ex, and Happy Face (Dennis Quaid) gets to Hazel (Khiyla Aynne) then drops some bombshells in his attempted controlled burn, which is a tactic firemen use to prevent bigger fires. Jesperson uses them to start them, though, so only he can control them.

With Happy Face now out of solitary, he’s free to do what he wants… mostly. So, he reaches out to his granddaughter again, this time at school. It’s fair to say Hazel, who did sell the drawing Happy Face sent her,...

Channing Tatum Is a Real-Life McDonald’s Robber in Derek Cianfrance’s ‘Roofman’ First Look
Image
After joining the MCU, creating a film production empire, and closing out his iconic tenure as “Magic Mike,” Channing Tatum is making yet another career pivot: leading legendary indie director Derek Cianfrance’s latest feature, “Roofman.”

Tatum stars as the titular vigilante who lived in a Toys ’R’ Us store and broke into more than 60 McDonald’s, emptying cash registers after herding staffs into freezers. The Roofman robber became an urban myth, and now it’s Tatum’s turn to bring his story to the screen. Tatum onstage at CinemaCon teased the footage and called him the “unusually polite” robber and said Cianfrance’s film is “equal parts devastatingly emotional but also hilarious.”

The trailer that was shown at CinemaCon described the film as “based on a true story *as told by a liar.” Tatum’s character explains that after escaping from prison, running as far away as possible doesn’t work.

Is 'Happy Face' an Accurate True Crime Story on Paramount+?
Image
Paramount+'s Happy Faceis a new series based on the memoir Shattered Silence: The Untold Story of a Serial Killer's Daughter, written by Melissa G. George, where she recounts discovering her father, Keith Hunter Jesperson, was the real-life serial killer known as the Happy Face Killer. In her memoir and spinoff podcast, Happy Face, George explores the devastation she faced when she realized at 15 years old that her father was a murderer and how she came to terms with that reality.

Paramount+'s latest true-crime series doesn't focus too much on Jesperson committing the heinous acts or the events that led to his arrest in 1995 but starts with him already serving a life sentence. The series takes a different approach by honing in on how the victims' families are affected and doesn't lose focus like other true-crime series that subconsciously tap into one aspect of the overall story that viewers...

'I Won't Be Doing Any More Fat Roles': Channing Tatum Shows Off Ripped New Look

Channing Tatum first rose to fame thanks to his unbeatable dancing skills. Many of his hit films included dancing, like 2006's Step Up, or the Magic Mike franchise, where he was extremely fit.

‘After This Death’ Review: Mía Maestro and Lee Pace in a Dud Follow-Up to Lucio Castro’s Transfixing ‘End of the Century’
Image
Argentinian writer-director Lucio Castro made a quiet stunner of a first feature in 2020 with the exquisitely evocative queer romance, End of the Century. Trading the beaches and parks of Barcelona for woodsy upstate New York in the fall, the filmmaker delivers a self-consciously enigmatic drama that includes a messianic electro-psychedelic rock star with a cult following, a torrid affair, a family tragedy, a near-fatal hiking accident and a car careening over a bridge, its driver missing and eventually presumed dead. Oh, there’s also toxic fandom that becomes a physical threat.

Despite all that and its momentous title, After This Death isn’t really about anything. Or at least nothing that holds the attention for long. Where End of the Century felt intimately personal, the new film is a studied and distancing slog that feels considerably longer and slower than its 96-minute run time. The script name-checks Hitchcock — specifically Vertigo...

Richard Linklater, Michel Franco, Radu Jude Set for Berlin 2025 Lineup — See the Full List
Image
The Berlin Film Festival has unveiled the lineup for the 2025 edition, running February 13-23. It’s the first official lineup overseen by new artistic director and former BFI London Film Festival leader Tricia Tuttle, who succeeds Carlo Chatrian and brings her background as an American journalist and curator to the annual German showcase. She’s also working with co-directors of programming, Jacqueline Lyanga and Michael Stütz, to help reposition the Berlinale’s profile among the great global film festivals and lure bigger-name filmmakers in the process.

This year’s lineup, announced Tuesday, January 21, features new films from Richard Linklater, Michel Franco, Rebecca Lenkiewicz, Hong Sangsoo (“What Does That Nature Say to You”), Radu Jude (“Kontinental ’25”), and Lucile Hadžihalilović (“The Ice Tower”). Already confirmed in the mix are “Mickey 17” from Bong Joon Ho and Ira Sachs’ Sundance premiere “Peter Hujar’s Day,” plus Tom Tykwer’s “The Light” opening the festival.

Dreama Walker in Compliance (2012)
Compliance (2012) Movie Ending Explained: What Happens to Becky, Sandra, and Daniels?
Dreama Walker in Compliance (2012)
Compliance (2012) directed by Craig Zobel, features an ensemble cast led by Dreama Walker as Becky, Ann Dowd as Sandra, Pat Healy as Daniels, Philip Ettinger as Kevin, Ashlie Atkinson as Marti, and Stephen Payne as Harold. Compliance starts like any other thriller, slow and measured but when it picks up, it transforms into something entirely unexpected. The concept of prank calling in cinema isn’t new, but this film handles it in a way that becomes the true highlight of the story. Everything whether it’s the cast, the theme, or the storyline is restrained and purposeful, delivering a film that spans just 90 minutes. The film follows the story of Becky, an innocent and naive employee who becomes victim of a prank call.

The movie opens with the employees, led by Sandra, gathering for a morning meeting before the store opens. It’s going to be a busy day because it’s the weekend,...

EP Patton Oswalt Boards Oscar Contender Short ‘Sardinia’, Starring Martha Plimpton, Philip Ettinger
Image
Exclusive: Patton Oswalt has joined Oscar-qualified short film Sardinia as executive producer, along with his wife, actress Meredith Salenger.

The dark satirical short, written and directed by Paul Kowalski (Paper Tiger), stars Philip Ettinger as a deeply serious man battling a deadly laughing plague alongside Emmy winner Martha Plimpton. Olek Krupa, Breeda Wool and Sorel Carradine also star.

“Sardinia takes less than twenty minutes of your life to watch, but then takes up days and weeks of your brain-space when you’re done. It’s that rich, that stinging, that deep,” Oswalt said in a statement. “What Paul Kowalski does, with equal measures of hilarity and horror, is show the world go quickly off-kilter—and the subsequent ‘correction’ to ‘normality’ makes this worse. If this sounds familiar, keep in...

Little Brother - Jennie Kermode - 19350
Philip Ettinger
“I know I’m older than you but I’ve always felt, like, dumber or less capable. It’s like I’m the little brother,” says Pete (Philip Ettinger).

Jake (Daniel Diemer) is waiting outside in the car when Pete emerges from the hospital. He’s clearly relieved to see the warm smile on his brother’s face. There’s a lightness about Pete that one would not expect in someone who has recently tried to kill himself. Still wearing his medical bracelet, he takes Jake back to their deceased grandmother’s house, where he’s been staying, talking cheerfully about matters of no consequence. When he can slip away, Jake speaks on the phone with their father (Jk Simmons), who wants to sell the house and, more to the point, get Pete back home where he can keep an eye on him.

He doesn’t mean it to be a betrayal.

J.K. Simmons
Jk Simmons in Little Brother

Dealing with loved ones who are harming themselves is always a difficult thing, and perhaps even more so when it’s not a byproduct of something else but a simple desire not to be alive anymore, When we meet Pete (Philip Ettinger), he’s already been in that state for years. his little brother, Jake (Daniel Diemer), is picking him up from the hospital after his latest suicide attempt. Sheridan O’Donnell’s film, itself called Little Brother, follows their subsequent travels together under the influence of their controlling father, whom we gradually come to recognise as a far more complex character than he first appears.

This troubled man almost certainly contributed to Pete being the way he is, but he’s still desperate to save him – and also to protect Jake. It’s a difficult role to get right, and the film benefits considerably from...

Gravitas has revealed an official trailer for an indie drama titled Little Brother, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Sheridan O'Donnell after many other shorts. After premiering at the 2023 Atlanta Film Festival last year, this film is set for a VOD release in September this year. Little Brother follows Jake, played by Daniel Diemer, as he drives his older brother Pete, played by Philip Ettinger, home for a family intervention after his most recent suicide attempt. The brothers aren't just oil and water; they're fire and gasoline—and they're both crammed inside a busted-up van for 1,400 miles with nowhere to hide. As they cross the American West together, the two struggle to reconcile their past and forge a new bond. Their overbearing father is played by J.K. Simmons (mostly on the phone). ‘My First Film’ Review: Zia Anger’s Origin Story Establishes Her as an Electrifying New Voice in American Indie Film
Image
A self-reflexive origin story about creation, growth, and the myth of the lone artist, “My First Film” announces a bold, disruptive new talent in American cinema. But if the film’s release is anything like Zia Anger’s experience in the film world thus far, it will elicit a maddening whimper where it should have made a bang.

That’s because Anger, who writes and directs with fierce emotion and sincerity, has had terrible luck (if you want to call it that) on the film scene. Despite directing evocative music videos for artists like Mitski and Angel Olsen, Anger has been consistently overlooked by Hollywood, and has struggled to secure financing. Her first feature, shot on a shoestring budget with support from family and friends, was rejected from every film festival.

A caveat: even Anger looks back on that first film as “bad.” At least she implies as much in “My First Film,...

Gravitas Ventures has acquired the U.S. and Canadian rights to Sheridan O’Donnell’s debut feature “Little Brother,” starring Daniel Diemer (“Under the Bridge”), Phillip Ettinger (“First Reformed”), Academy Award winner J.K. Simmons (“Whiplash”) and Polly Draper (“Thirtysomething”). The film is slated for a Sept. 2024 theatrical release.

“Little Brother” begins after Pete (Ettinger) attempts suicide, pushing his overbearing father Warren (Simmons) to recruit his little brother Jake (Diemer) to drive Pete from Albuquerque to Seattle for a family intervention. The brothers aren’t just oil and water; they’re fire and gasoline—and they’re both crammed inside a busted-up van for 1,400 miles with nowhere to hide. As they cross the American West, the two struggle to reconcile their past and forge a new bond.

‘My First Film’ Trailer: Zia Anger’s Feature Debut Is a Filmmaking Hall of Mirrors Starring Odessa Young
Image
Zia Anger is haunted by a long-abandoned film project in her feature directorial debut “My First Film.” A filmmaker, performance artist, and celebrated director of music videos for the likes of Beach House, Angel Olsen, Mitski, and Zola Jesus, Anger fuses ideas from that unrealized project with echoes of a touring stage piece she started in 2018 for this Mubi release, out at the end of August. Odessa Young stands in for Anger as the young filmmaker Vita, who 15 years before started making a film about a young woman adrift after becoming pregnant. IndieWire shares the exclusive trailer for the film below.

Here’s the official synopsis: “Vita (Odessa Young) revisits her first chaotic attempt at filmmaking — a semi-autobiographical feature made 15 years prior about a young woman who decides to leave home after becoming pregnant. Blending past with present, reality with fiction, Zia Anger’s ‘debut’ film navigates the tumultuous intersection...

Park Benched: Beth de Araújo Completes “Josephine” with Gemma Chan & Channing Tatum
Image
A film project delayed due to the pandemic, that was pushed back slightly and then leapfrogged when she shot and premiered SXSW title Soft & Quiet, it’s been confirmed that Beth de Araújo is currently in post-production (and probably gunning for a 2025 Sundance 2025 berth) with her sophomore feature. It’s been confirmed that Channing Tatum and Gemma Chan toplined Josephine — production took place this past April in San Francisco. One of our favorites in Philip Ettinger and Syra McCarthy also star while the centerpiece role belongs to newbie Mason Lily Reeves. Animal Kingdom’s David Kaplan is producing alongside Araújo.…...

Channing Tatum and Gemma Chan Are Starring in ‘Soft & Quiet’ Filmmaker’s Decade-in-the-Making Next Film
Image
If you managed to catch filmmaker Beth de Araújo’s feature directorial debut, the Gotham-nominated SXSW premiere “Soft & Quiet,” you already know how uniquely skilled de Araújo is at building dread and terror on both a technical and emotional level. Her first film, which debuted at the fest in 2022 before getting released in October of that year, used the one-take technique to follow a group of white supremacist women as they meet, mingle, and eventually attack a pair of Poc sisters.

While not based on a single real-life story, “Soft & Quiet” was the result of deep research into actual (and terrifying) culture shifts and personal experiences, from de Araújo’s own stories around a racist teacher to the Amy Cooper birdwatching incident and even the “Tradlife” movement. For her next film, de Araújo is again mining her own life and the world around her to tell what we...

Ethan Hawke Had To 'Hypnotize' Himself For His Best Role
Image
If you've ever watched any behind-the-scenes footage from "The Shining," you might remember Jack Nicholson working himself up into a frenzy prior to shooting the famous "Here's Johnny" scene. As poor Shelly Duvall quietly finds her way into the bathroom, Jack can be seen seething as he descends into the deranged mental space required for the scene. No wonder "The Shining" changed Shelly Duvall forever.

But while Nicholson's process for journeying to the outer edges of sanity involved jumping in place, repeating the words, "Come on!," and almost accidentally giving the Pa a concussion with a prop axe, not all actors follow that same method. We all know the punishing physical lengths to which Christian Bale goes in order to truly feel like the characters he portrays. As the actor told The Guardian, "I try to get as distant as possible. Otherwise, I can't do it. It's helpful not to look like yourself.

The Best Ethan Hawke Roles, Ranked
Image
Ethan Hawke is one of the most renowned actors currently working. He has four Academy Award nominations to his name - two for acting and two for writing. Slowly, he's branching into the world of directing. His new film Wildcat, starring his daughter Maya as Flannery O'Connor, comes to theaters on May 3rd - which makes this the perfect opportunity to dive into some of Hawke's earlier work.

He has played some of the most iconic characters in cinematic history. Whether he's playing a terrifying villain like The Black Phone's Grabber or a sympathetic romantic lead like Jesse Wallace in Before Sunrise, he brings nuance to every role he takes on. It's no wonder he's had a remarkably prolific career on both the big and small screens and should be celebrated for that.

Wildcat Review | An Overindulgent Portrayal of a Literary Icon
Image
Maya Hawke excels as Flannery O'Connor in Wildcat, embodying the writer's struggles with faith and creativity convincingly. Director Ethan Hawke's use of fantasy sequences overwhelms the film, detracting from the narrative and causing pacing issues. Despite a talented cast and meaningful subject matter, Wildcat's emphasis on style over substance results in a forgettable experience.

Wildcat explores the formative early life of celebrated Southern Gothic novelist Mary Flannery O'Connor through vivid depictions of her imaginative writing process. The deeply devout O'Connor struggled to reconcile her Catholic faith with artistic ambitions while suffering from debilitating lupus. Director/co-writer Ethan Hawke, scion Maya Hawke, and a venerated supporting cast revel in an overindulgent portrayal that confuses creative expression for substantive depth. A ping-pong structure, where the ensemble plays multiple characters, grinds the pacing to a cinematic drip. There's a lot of effort on display. That's appreciated, but the experience becomes arduous and unfortunately forgettable.

Ethan Hawke on Wildcat, Flannery O’Connor, John Huston, and Not Making a Biopic
Image
Full disclosure: I’ve been looking forward to this interview ever since I read the novel Ash Wednesday as a teenager. Ethan Hawke, co-writer and director of Wildcat, is an actor and filmmaker who has been as important to me as any artist in my life. The opportunity to discuss his new film––a feverish, faith-fueled look into the life of writer Flannery O’Connor as inspired by her fiction––with Hawke was both welcome and daunting.

The film stars Maya Hawke as O’Connor, alongside a stellar supporting cast that includes Laura Linney, Philip Ettinger, Rafael Casal, Steve Zahn, Cooper Hoffman, Willa Fitzgerald, Alessandro Nivola, and Liam Neeson. Ahead of the film’s release this Friday, we talk about the intimidation of adapting a great writer’s work, the joy of filming a great scene in a master shot, and inviting your audience into the conversation.

Don’t-Miss Indies: What to Watch in May
Image
In the 1990s and 2000s, May (and specifically Memorial Day) typically marked the beginning of Summer Movie Season. Multiplexes nationwide were packed to the emergency exits with big names, big explosions and (presumably) big box office. The film industry has changed since then, obviously, and summer no longer packs the same high-octane punch that it once did. But in this evolution, release schedule space has opened up for a stellar month of Don’t-Miss Indies titles.

Wildcat Review: A Prickly and Uncompromising Biopic, Just Like Flannery O’Connor Herself
Image
Ethan Hawke’s Wildcat won’t tell you much about what Flannery O’Connor accomplished. The audience won’t learn about O’Connor’s place in the literary world, the larger culture, or alongside other consciously Catholic fiction writers like Graham Greene. There’s a worthy determination to the way that Wildcat sees O’Connor’s world almost entirely from her mystical, pain-rattled perspective. But by limiting the film’s viewpoint so strictly, Hawke and co-screenwriter Shelby Gaines miss an opportunity to introduce O’Connor to a wider audience.

Hawke’s gnomic biopic opens with a 24-year-old O’Connor (Maya Hawke) trying to make it in New York, circa 1950. Having won a literary prize while attending the prestigious Iowa Writers Workshop, she’s trying to get her first novel, Wise Blood, published. But O’Connor, incapable of small talk or artistic compromise, isn’t a striving literary ingenue working the angles and currying favor.

Pete Davidson is laying his comedy series Bupkis to rest ahead of its planned second season. Davidson says while the semi-autobiographical comedy has been a great experience, it’s also an emotionally taxing show to bring to life on screens.

Davidson said about the sunsetting of Bupkis, “I’ve always seen Bupkis as a window into my life, since it is so personal and about my struggles and family. After nearly a decade of my personal life being in the media I wanted a chance to tell my story my way,” Davidson told The Hollywood Reporter. “Of all the work I’ve ever done, Bupkis is by far what I’m most proud of. Ethan Hawke goes back behind the camera for Wildcat, and here are details of his new film – plus a trailer.

Besides co-writing the last two Before films with Linklater and Julie Delpy, he has directed several documentaries and three feature films – Chelsea Walls in 1999, The Hottest State, adapted from his own novel in 2006, and...
