Star Wars mastermind George Lucas made history this weekend when he followed up on his promise that 2025 would be the year that he appeared at San Diego Comic-Con. To the cheers of fans that were present at the event, Lucas entered the room and received a standing ovation. Nevertheless, he didn't attend the event to announce anything regarding Star Wars. Instead, he did so to announce the presentation of the new Lucasfilm project, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art.
Per the report by Joblo, Lucas appeared on a panel that also included director Guillermo del Toro, VFX artist Doug Chiang and moderator Queen Latifah. Together they presented the museum project and even showed a few sketches of the massive structure. "I've been doing this for 50 years, and it occurred to me: 'What am I going to do with it all?' Because I refuse to sell it," Lucas said about the museum,...

81-year-old George Lucas appeared for the first time at the San Diego Comic-Con and received a standing ovation from fans, some of them raising their lightsabers up (via THR). The Star Wars creator announced his new project on the Hall H stage, which was the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. The museum will open for fans next year at the Los Angeles Exposition Park.
He did not talk about Star Wars or Indiana Jones at the comic con, but fans were still happy and cried out, “I love you, George Lucas.” Queen Latifah, a longtime friend of Lucas and a sci-fi nerd, moderated the panel discussion. Also appearing alongside Lucas were filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro and Star Wars production designer Doug Chiang.
The Hall H had a rather thoughtful discussion on Lucas’ museum and narrative art in general, which was unlike anything that happened there over the last three days.

San Diego Comic‑Con 2025 is gearing up for one of its biggest confirmed moments so far. George Lucas, the man behind Star Wars, is making his first-ever appearance on the iconic Hall H stage. According to The Wrap, Lucas will join filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and Lucas Museum of Narrative Art creative director Doug Chiang in a Sunday, July 27 panel moderated by Queen Latifah.
Titled “Sneak Peek of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art,” the event is less about new Star Wars projects and more about Lucas’s lifelong passion for visual storytelling. The panel description teases a journey from ancient cave paintings through modern comics, digital media, and sculpture, all with an eye toward how stories shape culture.
According to Comic‑Con’s senior communications officer David Glanzer, Lucas’s appearance feels like history coming home, “Nearly five decades ago, Star Wars made one of its earliest public appearances at our convention…...

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art — the still-under-construction project from George Lucas and wife Mellody Hobson — has laid off 15 full-time employees, or 14% of its staff, in effort to open as scheduled in 2026, the Los Angeles Times reported on Tuesday.
Two people familiar with museum operations who spoke to the Times anonymously, described the layoff announcement last Thursday as “shocking and chaotic.” They were given until 2 p.m. to leave the premises and told their personal belongings would be sent to them later by courier. Seven part-time, on-call positions were also cut.
Among those whose positions were eliminated was Bernardo Rondeau, who had been hired as curator of film programs and had previously been the founding director of film programs at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.

Ghatashraddha, a pivotal-but-rarely-seen Indian film by Girish Kasaravalli is set to be restored in time for its 50th anniversary, thanks in part to Martin Scorsese and George Lucas. Led by India’s Film Heritage Foundation, the restoration will receive substantial support from Scorsese's World Cinema Project, as well as funding from George Lucas and Mellody Hobson. The 1977 film will join the ranks of Indian masterworks like Kumatty, which was similarly rediscovered and re-released in collaboration between Fhf and Wcp. With the Film Heritage Foundation focusing on bringing otherwise-lost Indian classics to international movie audiences, Ghatashraddha will hopefully be only one of many pieces of Indian cinema revitalized in coming years.

Update: President Joe Biden arrived in Los Angeles this afternoon as part of a campaign swing.
As the results overwhelming came in for the incumbent in the South Carolina Democratic primary this evening, the first stop for Biden out on the West Coast is a campaign meeting in Bel Air, according to a White House pool report.
A source said that the meeting was at the home of George Lucas. Before the Star Wars creator bought the house in 2017, the residence was owned by H. Ross Perot Jr. and before that, by Freddy DeMann, the producer and music executive who was the co-founder of Maverick Records, according to Variety’s reports on the real estate transactions.
Lucas’ wife, Mellody Hobson, has been a major donor to Biden’s re-election campaign. Her contributions include $125,000 to the Biden Action Fund, a joint fundraising committee, according to Federal Election Commission records.

This story about the best film schools in the U.S. first appeared in the College Issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Before diving into this list — TheWrap’s seventh annual film school rankings — keep one critical caveat in mind: The dream campus for one student can turn out to be an academic nightmare for another. It’s all subjective and to some degree a barrel full of apples and oranges. After all, the best schools for learning how to direct aren’t necessarily the best for learning how to write or produce. Just because a college or university has a high number on these pages doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the right place for you.
That said, there is something of a science to how we put together these rankings. For starters, TheWrap reached out to every school listed and collected data points on everything from class size...

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art announced on Tuesday that the institution, which is now under construction in Los Angeles’s Exposition Park, will open in 2025.
In 2017, Los Angeles won the location sweepstakes over San Francisco for George Lucas’ one-of-a-kind museum, which will house art from films including Lucas’ own “Star Wars,” as well as photography, Renaissance paintings, and ancient Roman mosaics. When construction began in 2018, it was expected to open in 2022, then was delayed to 2023.
Sandra Jackson-Dumont, director and CEO of the museum, shared the “significant progress” already made on the five-story, 300,000-square-foot building, which will be surrounded by a park and gardens on its 11-acre campus.

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art said Tuesday that its five-story, 300,000-square foot building and 11-acre campus in Los Angeles’ Exposition Park is now aiming at opening in 2025.
It’s the latest timeline shift for the museum, which first broke ground in March 2018 for a planned 2021 open. Construction and other delays owing to the Covid pandemic forced it in April of last year to move its opening to 2023.
Co-founded by George Lucas and Mellody Hobson to showcase narrative art via a collection of paintings, illustrations, comic art, photography, film, animation and digital art, the Lucas Museum was designed by Ma Yansong of Mad Architects with Michael Siegel of Stantec as executive architect. Sandra Jackson-Dumont, the museum’s director and CEO, said today that installation has now begun on the more than 1,500 curved fiberglass-reinforced polymer panels to shape the building’s organic, biomorphic surface.
