When director Jon M. Chu asked his go-to cinematographer Alice Brooks what her goal was for “Wicked” while they were prepping in London, she replied: “To make the greatest love story ever told about these two friends, Elphaba and Glinda.” Every lighting choice was to ensure that intent was fulfilled. It’s a grand, epic musical, but their conflicted relationship was key: It was all in the performances of Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda, who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch. Brooks even assigned them their own flattering lenses: 65mm for Erivo and 75mm for Grande.
“Jon wanted this movie to look like our own version of Oz,” Brooks told IndieWire. “It was really important to him that we made our own world that no one had ever seen before. And so we decided we’d make our own version of what Technicolor was,...

You may not recognize the name, but in the world of costume design, Paul Tazewell is a recognized talent with a capital “t.” So much so that he appears on his way to ascending into the pantheon of lauded living costume designers that include legends such as Colleen Atwood, Sandy Powell, Jenny Beavan, Mark Bridges, and Ruth Carter. He’s already a Tony Award winner with nine nominations overall, an Emmy Award winner, and an Oscar nominee for Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story.” With Jon M.

Wicked fans have pointed out numerous different differences between the stage production and the new movie.
One of those is Ariana Grande‘s pink bubble dress in the opening of the movie during “No One Mourns the Wicked.” On Broadway, Glinda wears a blue dress, as seen here on Annaleigh Ashford.
In a new interview, the Wicked movie’s costume designer Paul Tazewell is opening up about switching up the iconic bubble dress.

“I guess my closest connection to the story of The Wizard of Oz was the film,” Paul told People. “When I think of the iconic Glinda, it is Billie Burke as Glinda in that pink dress and how she arrives in the bubble. From the dazzling period costumes in West Side Story and Harriet to the looks in the magical world of Wicked, Academy Award-nominated costume designer Paul Tazewell has shown that few artists weave as much versatility into their creative DNA. “I love period work and telling stories connected to history. What excited me about Wicked was designing a world rooted in period silhouettes while also creating a fantasy,” he says.
For the monumental task of transforming the beloved Broadway hit into two films, the designer says he drew upon a wealth of inspiration: “Wicked was about digging deep into where the original story came from. With the L. Frank Baum book, the 1939 film, Gregory Maguire’s Wicked and the Broadway musical, you’ve got four distinct expressions of the same story.” Maintaining the essence of the show while putting his own spin on it, Tazewell introduced a fresh perspective without entirely modernizing it.

The Broadway musical adaptation of “Death Becomes Her” opened Thursday night at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. It transforms the renowned 1992 film into a dynamic stage production that is sure to enchant fans.
The show, starring Tony nominee Megan Hilty and Jennifer Simard, reimagines Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn’s original roles. Brooke Shields, Tina Fey, and a surprise appearance by Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, and Tina Knowles were among the stars on opening night.
A highlight of the evening was Meryl Streep’s lighthearted greeting to Hilty: “Break a leg, or I’ll break it for you,” accompanied by a bouquet of wilted flowers that brilliantly encapsulated the show’s dark comedy.
The musical, with a screenplay by Marco Pennette and music by Julia Mattison and Noel Carey, adheres to the original film’s campy comedy. Director Christopher Gattelli has expertly translated the film’s renowned special effects for the stage, which...

“Wicked,” part one of the long-awaited screen adaptation of one of Broadway’s longest-running musicals, has a bevy of seasoned experts in the musical genre both in front of and behind the camera. The film is directed by Jon M. Chu, who previously received critical acclaim for his movie version of Lin Manuel-Miranda’s “In the Heights.” Leading the cast as Elphaba is Cynthia Erivo, a Tony winner for “The Color Purple,” while her love interest Fiyero is played by Jonathan Bailey, an Olivier Award winner for a role in a London revival of “Company.” And beyond being one of the biggest pop stars of the last decade, Ariana Grande is a theater kid at heart who got her start in showbusiness in the ensemble of tween musical “13.”
But in two key roles are actors who are probably the most familiar faces for cinephiles and moviegoers — but not ones known for breaking out in tune.

A perfect rejoinder to the ubiquitous Broadway Sucks These Days gripe about the too-many movie-to-stage adaptations has arrived at long last, and it’s a simple three-word response: Death Becomes Her. A virtually perfect big-budget, broad-appeal musical comedy that improves in every way over the 1992 film, director-choreographer Christopher Gattelli’s wildly entertaining vehicle for two of our best singer-actor-comedians on any stage today renders the movie-as-source snipe worthless.
Don’t waste a minute’s thought on which of the two – Megan Hilty or Jennifer Simard – come out on top with this delight of a holiday gift (let Tony voters lose sleep over that one next spring). The two work together like the ingredients of a dangerous magical potion, each delivering precisely nuanced yet stupendously big performances in amounts that, were they off by so much as a fraction, would thoroughly undo the magic.
And singling out Hilty and Simard certainly...

When Cynthia Erivo signed on to play Elphaba in Universal’s big-screen adaptation of “Wicked,” she knew one thing: she wanted to be green.
But Erivo wanted to actually be green, not have the color superimposed onto her skin in post. So, the film’s makeup designer Frances Hannon — who was thrilled by the actor’s insistence — took on the challenge of finding the right verdant hue.
Hannon created a checklist: The makeup couldn’t look painted on; the shade of green should compliment Erivo’s “extraordinarily beautiful” features; and the color needed to work in every light. The product also needed to last all day and not transfer onto Erivo’s co-star Ariana Grande, who plays Glinda, or the elaborate costumes designed by Paul Tazewell.
There was just one problem, Hannon says: “The product didn’t exist.”

Reviews for “Wicked” keep pouring in, with more and more critics heaping praises on Ariana Grande as Galinda Upland, aka Glinda the Good Witch.
This is the biggest film role yet for the international pop star, who goes by her birth name, Ariana Grande-Butera, in the end credits. Over the past few weeks, she has steadily risen in Gold Derby’s Oscar odds for Best Supporting Actress, now coming in at fourth place to win the golden statuette. The enthusiastic backing of many top film critics certainly doesn’t hurt.
Phil de Semlyen (Time Out) calls out Grande’s “scene-stealing” abilities. William Bibbiani (The Wrap) refers to her “superb physical comedy.” Richard Lawson (Vanity Fair) says she’s found her “movie-star groove.” Christian Holub (Entertainment Weekly) claims she “struts around Shiz like she owns the place.” That’s just a small handful.

“Are people born wicked? Or do they have wickedness thrust upon them?” The conundrum of theodicy has long plagued humanity, just as it’s plagued the Ozians of Munchkinland. Like the source novel and Broadway musical, Jon M. Chu’s film adaptation of part one of Wicked (penned by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox) doesn’t dig into the existential nitty-gritty of the question. But it makes its position on the matter as blunt as the theatrics are dazzling: no, people are not born wicked. It’s thrust upon them by circumstance or, more specifically, the powers that be.
As all fans of the musical already know: we begin at the end… of The Wizard of Oz. The Wicked Witch of the West has been defeated and the munchkins are rejoicing like they’ll never rejoice again. They’re throwing the biggest party ever seen this side of Emerald City.

The movie version of Broadway’s beloved musical Wicked has been a long time coming since the show’s opening in 2003, but it is finally here — and quite frankly, not only does it soar cinematically, it exceeds all expectations. What director Jon M. Chu does here ranks with the best movie musicals, an innovative and quite stunning take that will not disappoint even the hardest-core lovers of the stage version. And this is only Part One (more on that later).
Of course a magical descendant of one of the most celebrated movies of all time, 1939’s The Wizard Of Oz, and even before that L. Frank Baum’s immortal book(s) first published in 1900, this take was based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 origin story of Elphaba and Galinda and the relationship between two BFFs whose lives go in wildly different directions in a world pre-Dorothy.

One of the signature songs of Wicked is “Popular” — a word that’s also an epic understatement when applied to the 2003 stage musical. Seen by upwards of 65 million people, the show’s themes of female friendship, empowerment and discrimination clearly struck a chord, fueling almost $1.7 billion in Broadway grosses and around $6 billion worldwide. Producers have been in no rush to bring the goldmine property to the screen, and their patience now pays off handsomely in Jon M. Chu’s eye-popping movie version, which enriches the source material while saluting the Golden Age of Technicolor MGM musicals, chief among them The Wizard of Oz.

On Tuesday, 24 hours before one of Scad Savannah Film Festival’s most anticipated panels, “Wicked: A First Look,” someone approached to inform that they would be in line at least an hour before. The anticipation was palpable. When “Wicked” cinematographer Alice Brooks, editor Myron Kerstein and costume designer and Variety’s 10 artisans to watch honoree Paul Tazewell stepped onto the stage Wednesday, they were welcomed like rock stars, with fans screaming at a deafening decibel. Based on the crowd’s enthusiasm, Kerstein wanted to see who was Team Glinda and who was Team Elphaba. Applause wasn’t enough to distinguish the two, but a show of hands suggested the audience skewed towards Glinda.
The artisans didn’t pick sides (they love them both equally), but that friction-turned-friendship between the two young witches was the filmmaker’s north star while developing the movie.

With the theatrical release of “Wicked” just weeks away, the buzz is already defying gravity, with every frame, clip, and nugget blowing up on social media. Universal has just introduced ‘Wicked’ to film critics, and the response is overwhelmingly positive. Jon M. Chu’s take on the famous Broadway show has received high praise, with lead actresses Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande being lauded for their performances, catapulting them into this year’s Oscar discussions.
Critics are already tipping ‘Wicked’ as a standout film. Variety’s Katcy Stephen called it a ‘masterpiece,’ impressed by Ariana Grande’s portrayal of Glinda, which she describes as full of humor and charisma.

As Paul Tazewell was conceiving design ideas for “Wicked,” mushroom gills served as an unlikely inspiration for Elphaba’s black dress.
The costume designer had stumbled across a documentary about mushrooms. Tazewell says, “I became aware of the beauty of different kinds of mushrooms because of the texture and different colors.”
Tazewell was tasked with designing the costumes for “Wicked,” starring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda. The idea to align Elphaba with nature stemmed from the character’s history.
Says Tazewell, “She is this little oppressed girl being called out because of the color of her skin and ostracized even within her family.” He added that because of her connection and allyship to the animal community he turned to nature to define what her look would be, and that’s where mushrooms became the inspiration.

Two films captivated audiences at the Middleburg Film Festival, resulting in a tie for the coveted audience award.
Edward Berger’s religious thriller “Conclave” and Tim Fehlbaum’s historical drama “September 5” both took home the audience award at the Virginia-based festival. Meanwhile, R.J. Cutler’s “Martha,” an intimate look at business mogul Martha Stewart, earned the audience award for best documentary. Mohammad Rasoulof’s Iranian political thriller “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” claimed the top spot for best international feature.
“Conclave,” proving to be a crowd favorite, secured its second audience prize on the festival circuit, having previously won at the Mill Valley Film Festival. The film, which premiered at Telluride to critical acclaim, is generating Oscar buzz for stars Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, Isabella Rossellini and director Berger. Berger’s last film, “All Quiet on the Western Front,” received nine Oscar nominations and won four.

There’s not a total divide between the world of film and theater costume design, but they are different disciplines. Sometimes that can be freeing when designing for the theater, which doesn’t require the base level of naturalism audiences usually expect from something shot on camera. But then the detail work that a camera can capture — specific fabrics, patterns, how just the right color reads onscreen — can be an essential component of film storytelling.
As part of the Middleburg Film Festival, costume designer Paul Tazewell discussed how he expresses character and builds worlds through costume in both theater or film. Tazewell singled out “Hamilton” as a project where the final costume designs connected the actors to the style and legacy of the American revolutionaries but didn’t tether them to the rules of period clothing. The costumes were designed to link the actors just as much to the vibrancy...

If you want to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, it’s best to pick a project for which you can create frilly dresses from a bygone era. Since its introduction at the 1948 Academy Awards, this category has favored period pictures, including the 2024 winner “Poor Things.” (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Costume Design.)
Voters love to reward the creative forces behind such films, especially those that are about the aristocracy including recent champs “Marie Antoinette” (2007), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2008), “The Duchess” (2009), “The Young Victoria” (2010), and “Anna Karenina” (2013). By the way, none of those films even competed for Best Picture. Indeed, only 20 Best Picture champs also won this award; the last to do so was “The Artist” in 2012.
Among the other double dippers was “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004). Fantasy films such as this often boast Oscar-winning costumes, including 2022 champ “Cruella,...

The new trailer for “Wicked” is packed full of performances of songs from the Broadway musical. Earlier trailers set up the origin story of the witches of Oz. Now we get to see them let loose.
The trailer opens with a snippet of the catchy tune “Popular,” sung by Glinda (Ariana Grande) as she gives Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) a makeover. It then segues to Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey) declaring that he is “Dancing Through Life” before ending with a tease of the show-stopping “Defying Gravity.” Grande and Erivo harmonize together before Erivo takes flight and becomes the Wicked Witch of the West in this soaring finale to the film.
While “Wicked” opens on Nov. 22, we’ll have to wait a full year to see the second half of the story. Jon M. Chu (“Crazy Rich Asians”) directed both movies. With Chu opting to use the whole of the Act One score,...

Gold Derby’s Oscar predictions in the below-the-line races opened last week, and “Wicked” leads the early odds to win Best Costume Design. That should come as no surprise to anyone who’s seen the popular Broadway musical, which won various costume awards races two decades ago (including at the 2004 Tonys) for its eye-popping looks for good witches, bad witches, deceitful wizards and everyone in between.
The Universal Pictures film adaptation, which will begin defying gravity in theaters on November 22, 2024, stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba Thropp, aka the Wicked Witch of the West, Ariana Grande as Galinda Upland, aka Glinda the Good Witch, Michelle Yeoh as headmistress Madame Morrible, Jeff Goldblum as the iconic Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and Jonathan Bailey as young prince Fiyero Tigelaar. Jon M. Chu directs the movie from a script co-written by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox.

Beauty YouTube channel, the "Positions" singer got candid about when she would be releasing new music, and for now, the answer is not until she completes filming on "Wicked." Grande is set to play Glinda in the two-part adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, which is being directed by Jon M. Chu, and since this is her dream role, she's focusing all of her energy into giving the best performance she can.
While giving viewers a tutorial on how to recreate her geometric eyeliner look, Grande answered fans' questions, including one about when she would be releasing new music. "This is a question I'm nervous to answer, but I feel like I want to have a little bit of transparency and honesty with my fans,...

Well… Oscar night 2022 was certainly one to remember. Many obituaries will have received their first lines last night, and there’s a few moments that will appear half way down for some of them.
But – here’s the good news: Sian Heder’s Coda won Best Picture, and genuine living legend Troy Kotsur took home the Best Supporting Actor award. It may have been a surprise for some, as Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog was hotly favoured. In the second piece of excellent news it was Campion herself who took home the Best Director gong, many would argue it’s long overdue.
Elsewhere Encanto, Will Smith, Jessica Chastain all took to the stage to collect their awards, and it’s pleasing to see another year when the awards were well spread out. It’s a sign of an industry in fine fettle, which is just as well given,...

The Netflix western “The Power of the Dog” entered these awards with a leading 12 nominations, which is also the most nominations any Netflix film has ever received. But was it destined to become the first film from a streaming distributor to take top honors? To achieve that the film had to battle against Apple’s “Coda,” which only had three nominations but won crucial awards from the Screen Actors Guild, Writers Guild, and Producers Guild, the last of which uses the same kind of ranked-choice voting as the Oscars.

Jenny Beavan won an Oscar tonight in the Best Achievement in Costume Design category for her work on Disney’s Cruella.
This is Beavan’s third Oscar win for Costume Design, having won in 2016 for Mad Max: Fury Road and in 1987 for A Room with a View.
Beavan started her acceptance speech by jokingly saying, “If you hear a really embarrassing noise, it’s probably my family somewhere up there.”
Based on the iconic villain from 101 Dalmatians, Cruella follows a young woman named Estella (Emma Stone) who dreams of being a fashion designer. When she manages to land her dream job designing for the Baroness (Emma Thompson), Estella quickly becomes convinced that she deserves more in life. Taking on the persona of Cruella, she becomes a rival of the Baroness with a rebellious sense of fashion.

The films in contention for the 2022 Best Costume Design Oscar are “Cruella,” “Cyrano,” “Dune,” “Nightmare Alley,” and “West Side Story.” Our current odds show “Cruella” (16/5) to be the frontrunner, followed in order by “Dune” (39/10), “West Side Story” (4/1), “Nightmare Alley” (9/2), and “Cyrano” (9/2).
Jenny Beavan’s nomination for “Cruella” is her 11th and could result in her third win, as she previously bagged trophies for “A Room with a View” (1987) and “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016). She would be the 11th costumer to achieve as many victories and already ranks as the eighth most-nominated one. Her other eight bids came for “The Bostonians” (1985), “Maurice” (1988), “Howards End” (1993), “The Remains of the Day” (1994), “Sense and Sensibility” (1996), “Anna and the King” (2000), “Gosford Park” (2002), and “The King’s Speech” (2011). The first five films for which she was nominated were all directed by James Ivory.
Jacqueline Durran (“Cyrano”) has also won twice for her work in “Anna Karenina” (2013) and...
