Strangers Things star Finn Wolfhard and Ghostbusters: Afterlife’sBilly Bryk have gone through hell to bring back the coming-of-age comedy, combining laughs with horror in this year’s unorthodox slasher outing, Hell of a Summer. Following its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival back in 2023, the killer comedy that takes aim at slasher tropes was released in theaters earlier this month on April 4, courtesy of Neon.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with MovieWeb’s George Edelman, Billy Bryk revealed how they approached the balance between comedy, horror, and humanity in Hell of a Summer, with the actor stating that, together with his co-writer and co-director Finn Wolfhard, they hope to bring comedies back to the big screen in a big way.

Finn Wolfhard’s transition from actor to filmmaker took a step forward this year with the release of Hell of a Summer, a horror-comedy he co-wrote, co-directed, and co-starred in alongside Billy Bryk. The film, now in theaters, follows a group of summer camp counselors facing a masked killer over one increasingly deadly night in the woods.
Wolfhard spoke with Yahoo Entertainment about the project and pointed to Jesse Eisenberg as a key influence. After acting in Eisenberg’s 2022 directorial debut When You Finish Saving the World, Wolfhard said he paid close attention to Eisenberg’s process on set. “It was so fascinating to watch him work,” Wolfhard said. “Something that really stuck with me was how light he was on set and how much of a fun environment he created.”

For Finn Wolfhard, making the leap from child actor to writer/director was much easier with a mentor like Jesse Eisenberg.
After he and Hell of a Summer co-writer/co-director/co-star Billy Bryk worked with Eisenberg on his 2022 directorial debut When You Finish Saving the World, Wolfhard noted the experience “really stuck with me” as he got “tons” of advice from Eisenberg on their parallel trajectories.
“It was so fascinating to watch him work,” Wolfhard told Yahoo Entertainment. “Something that really stuck with me was how light he was on set and how much of a fun environment he created. If we ever wanted to joke around or do something funny, he really gave us the time and ability to do that. He just wanted it to be fun, even though the movie was often quite serious and there were very dramatic parts.”

Finn Wolfhard rose to fame thanks to his role as Mike Wheeler in Netflix's sci-fi series Stranger Things and has since continued to hang around the supernatural/ horror genre. His latest project, Hell of a Summer, is a horror-comedy-slasher he co-directed.
Hell of a Summer was released in theaters on Apr. 4 by genre expert studio Neon following its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023. The movie has Wolfhard teaming up again with Billy Bryk after Wolfhard's directorial debut, 2020's short comedy Night Shifts. The campy slasher comedy is officially out, but its Rotten Tomatoes score is nothing to write home about, debuting with a "rotten" score of 58%.
So far, there are only 33 reviews available, so the score for the horror-comedy might fluctuate as more reviews come in. Out of the 33, 19 are recent, while the other were following its TIFF release. 12 of the recent reviews are positive.

The pace is picking up with studio wide release A Minecraft Movie booming and plenty of indie fare to fill out behind from Neon’s Hell of a Summer and IFC Films’ The Luckiest Man in America to Fathom’s next installment of The Chosen and expansions of The Friend from Bleecker Street and Gkids’ re-release of Princess Mononoke.
CinemaCon, the biggest annual gathering of theater owners and studios, wrapped last night in Las Vegas. Exhibitors’ tempers were strained by a sour first quarter at the box office and there was an explosion of talk around longer theatrical windows which will for sure remain an ongoing conversation. That said, Q1 is behind us so here’s to hoping for a sustained period of more movies — many highlighted in Vegas — and higher-grossing movies to lift all boats.
Neon opens Hell Of A Summer on 1,255 screens after Thursday previews and early shows took in $215k.

Rosebud Baker is an expert in making light of life’s most devastating moments. In her first Netflix special, The Mother Lode, Baker uses her gift for dark humor to talk about her difficulties getting pregnant, the agony of miscarriage, and the challenges of motherhood.
Topics like death, grief, and addiction have often been fodder for Baker. In her 2021 Comedy Central special Whiskey Fists, Baker tells jokes about the tragic death of her seven-year-old sister, who drowned in a jacuzzi when Baker was in high school. “My sister drowned in a jacuzzi,...

When Rosebud Baker found out she was pregnant in early 2023, she had to decide how to approach her standup material as she embarked on a national tour. She’s not afraid of the challenge of weaving her personal life into art — the comedian known for discussing the intimacies of her marriage onstage, as well as the death of her sister at the age of 7 — but after two miscarriages she struggled with the decision to speak about her pregnancy.
“Look, I’ll be honest with you, I didn’t have a ton of faith that she was going to make it,” Baker says with her signature deadpan delivery. “I’ve never had a superstition about it, where I thought oh if I talk about this something bad could happen — it was more like, if I talk about it and then something bad happens, how do I address that?”

It is February, and it is still cold outside. You don't want to go out there. Stay inside where it is warm. Eat a bunch of junk, and stream a lot of things on Netflix. While Netflix and chill might not have a very direct meaning, you can interpret that as you want to watch Netflix because you don't want to be chilled.
But what to watch? There is a bunch of new stuff every week on your favorite streaming service, but not everything on this list is brand new. Most of it is, though. We won't lie.
That is only because you might not yet have had a chance to see what is suggested. You should take the weekend off from work (or not go out). You should watch these things instead.

Stranger Things may be coming to an end this year, but star Finn Wolfhard isn't done fighting monsters just yet — not by a long chalk. In fact, with his and fellow actor Billy Bryk's joint directorial debut Hell Of A Summer, the 22-year-old Canadian is diving headfirst into genre territory for a throwback summer-camp slasher complete with ouija boards, masked killers, and all the blood and guts a horror fan could hope for. Check out the newly released first trailer for the gory horror-comedy, co-written by and co-starring Wolfhard and Bryk, below:

Finn Wolfhard of Stranger Things fame stars in and co-directs the horror-comedy Hell of a Summer, set in a familiar location.…summer camp. Hopefully this outing can carve out its own unique niche in the well-trodden slasher film subgenre. The trailer’s heavy on comedy and light on horror, but it does offer a sampling of gore, so there’s that.

Summer camp still proves to be a hellish experience for some young adults in the first trailer for Hell of a Summer, which marks the directorial debut of Stranger Things' Finn Wolfhard. Judging from the first look, Wolfhard hopes to make this horror comedy a worthy addition to summer camp terror along the lines of Sleepaway Camp and Friday the 13th.
Co-written with his co-director Billy Byrk, Hell of a Summer revolves around a camp counselor named Jason Hochberg (Fred Hechinger) who feels a bit out of touch as a 24-year-old working at a summer camp. However, when he arrives at Camp Pineway, he'll soon realize that bonding with his teenage co-workers is the least of his problems, as a masked killer begins picking off the camp counselors one by one.

Rosebud Baker is gearing up to release her second comedy special, The Mother Lode, on Netflix this February 11, Deadline reveals. The special, taped during two sold-out nights at the iconic Comedy Cellar in New York City, showcases Baker at two very different moments—before and after becoming a mom. The contrasting performances bring a fresh angle to her sharp and honest comedy.
Through her stand-up, Baker dives into her personal journey, sharing hilarious and sometimes biting takes on everything from deciding to have kids to the unglamorous sides of childbirth and parenthood.
She doesn’t shy away from the tough stuff either, opening up about struggles like infertility, miscarriage, and postpartum experiences.
The special, which Baker also directed and produced, was filmed over two years to give a full picture of her journey. She explained her goal was to make people laugh and feel less isolated, no matter their relationship to parenthood.

Amy Schumer’s Life & Beth is no longer.
Hulu has canceled the dramedy after two seasons. The move is not a huge surprise as the second season finished in February, and while Hulu obviously didn’t release any viewing data, it failed to crack Nielsen’s streaming list.
Written, directed, executive produced and starring Schumer, Life & Beth follows Beth (Schumer), whose life looks pretty great on paper. Impressive to everyone she grew up with, she makes a good living as a wine distributor. She’s in a long-term relationship with an attractive, successful guy and lives in Manhattan. But when a sudden incident forces her to engage with her past, her life changes forever.

Amy Schumer booked a recognizable psychic for the second season of her Hulu series Life & Beth.
As the trailer revealed, Jennifer Coolidge makes a cameo in Schumer’s follow-up season. And now a new clip, dropped on Thursday, shows nearly two minutes of the anticipated scene, which comes in the third episode of the 10-episode season, which releases in full on Thursday.
Playing a New Orleans psychic named Madame de Merde, the Emmy-winning White Lotus actress has been booked for a reading by Beth (Schumer), who brings another season two guest character — played by Amy Sedaris — along for the appointment. As the teaser shows, however, Beth doesn’t exactly get a good vibe during their introduction.

Making a grand entrance into the world of directing, Billy Bryk and Finn Wolfhard present their feature debut, Hell of a Summer. With the vibes reminiscent of Friday the 13th and Sleep Away Camp, this film delivers nostalgia that captures the essence of the golden age of horror slasher cinema. Each character checks off the 1980s horror trope boxes, ensuring that every campy moment feels both authentic and delightfully over the top. Bryk and Wolfhard also star.

Exclusive: This Joka, a stand-up comedy series exec produced by Will Smith, will not be returning for a second season on Roku.
The streaming service launched the series, which came via its acquisition of short-form service Quibi, in March.
The series features a raft of stand ups including Punkie Johnson and Chris Estrada.
Deadline understands that the decision had nothing to do with the Oscars incident, where Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage, but a somewhat unusual issue with timing.
Roku is believed to never really have had the option to renew the series, which is produced by Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s Westbrook Studios and Topgolf Entertainment Group. The option to renew lapsed before Roku launched the show, and certainly before the streamer had the chance to analyse its viewing data, meaning that it was unlikely to return for a second season on the platform.

It’s hard to imagine a more outlandish origin story than Rosebud Baker’s accidental debut as a stand-up comedian. It happened during a White House dinner and, as Baker recalls, it was a disaster. “Inside Jokes,” the upcoming six-episode docuseries from director Neil Berkeley debuting this month on Amazon, takes a look at not just the end result of some of the most coveted slots at the annual comedy gathering, but the long and unpredictable road it takes for so many people to get there.
“The exciting thing about this show is that some of these people are going to be household names. In fact, it’s already happening. But in this show we get to meet them before they’ve had huge success,” Berkeley told IndieWire. “They’re still struggling, trying to make it and doing stand up all night, every night.
