‘The Lizzie Borden Game’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Airisa Durand, Jason Brooks, Laura Wilson, Jessica Noel Thompson, Chynna Rae Shurts | Written and Directed by Calvin Morie McCarthy

In The Lizzie Borden Game, cult indie horror director Calvin Morie McCarthy (Conjuring: The Beyond; Beware the Boogeyman) returns with another low-budget but high-effort stab at supernatural horror. Blending urban legend thrills with practical gore and flashes of sly humour, the film is a knowingly campy entry that horror buffs with a taste for B-movie bloodshed may well find appealing—if they have the patience.

Let’s clear something up right away: this isn’t a dramatisation of the infamous Lizzie Borden case. Instead, McCarthy mines the true crime icon for mythic inspiration, turning her into the Bloody Mary of this story. A group of five adult friends, including Emily (Airisa Durand), reeling from the tragic loss of her parents, gathers at a remote gothic “castle” for a Friendsgiving getaway.

‘Beware the Boogeyman’ DVD Review
Image
Stars: Elissa Dowling, Airisa Durand, Chynna Rae Shurts, Rollyn Stafford, Nicolette Pullen, Jason Reynolds, Khail Duggan, James Luster, Steve Larkin, Jax Kellington, Calvin Morie McCarthy, Marcella Laasch | Written and Directed by Calvin Morie McCarthy, Josh Dietrich, Kai Pacifico Eng, Tim Coyle

I would have expected the new indie anthology film Beware the Boogeyman to have come out a while back, closer to the release of the widely hyped Stephen King adaptation, The Boogeyman. The inspiration is obvious, one scene even has a character holding a copy of Night Shift, the collection of King’s stories that brought it to most people’s attention. In any case, it’s out now and wants you to believe in it.

Beware the Boogeyman opens with Dr. Tristan Makenzie the newest potential addition to Silverdale Psychiatric Hospital’s staff going in for her orientation on, of all days, a Sunday. Dr. Gabey Moon meets...

Their getaway is derailed when an unknown and cryptic metaphysical force emerges and blocks them from returning home. Trapped on the puzzling plot of land, their captor makes it clear that no one can leave until their deadly demands are met. ‘An Amityville Poltergeist’ – The One That Shamelessly Rips Off J-Horror [The Amityville IP]
Image
Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”

Straight off the top, audiences going into An Amityville Poltergeist (2020) hoping to see objects flying around the famed Long Island house need to adjust their expectations. Despite featuring the word “poltergeist” in the title, the film is more of a drama with J-Horror spectral hauntings. In fact all of the horrific set pieces draw heavily on the visual iconography of Ringu/The Ring and The Grudge.

An Amityville Poltergeist is another name-only entry in the Amityville “franchise.” According to IMDb trivia, the film was shot under the title No Sleep, then became Don’t Sleep in post-production, then changed to include Amityville by the distributor when it was being shopped around.

So while there is a brief, half-hearted attempt to capture the iconic cat eye windows,...

‘Insidious Inferno’ Review
Image
Stars: Stephanie Leet, Neil Green, Erik Skybak, Chynna Rae Shurts | Written and Directed by Calvin Morie McCarthy

Insidious Inferno is the latest film from Calvin Morie McCarthy and like his previous films Conjuring: The Beyond and An Amityville Poltergeist it has a title that refers to two other genre films, neither of which it has any connection to. Regular readers will also know that I didn’t have anything good to say about them. I did, however, like his last film, Pillow Party Massacre, and the trailer for Insidious Inferno definitely grabbed my attention. As a result, I was quite curious about how this would turn out.

Monica has inherited her father’s house, a house she hates as much as she hated him while he was alive. Her husband Andre tells her she has to move on from it, but he can’t get over the death of his daughter from a previous marriage.

‘Exorcism in Utero’ Review
Image
Stars: Sam Bangs, Leonard Hoge, Steve Larkin, Stephanie Leet, Calvin Morie McCarthy | Written and Directed by Erik Skybak

While watching TV late one night, Peter O’Neill (Leonard Hoge) notices a curious sight from his bedroom window. A green light outside alerts him to strange occurrences in the house next-door, owned by the strictly religious Johnson family. What Peter witnesses leaves him scared, and his attempts to inform his family are met with disbelief.

Writer/director Erik Skybak then takes viewers into the Johnsons’ house, as they invite fellow churchgoer Herma (Sam Bangs) to housesit while they are on vacation. Later while she is alone, the guest ventures into the cellar where she discovers mysterious items, including a ring she tries on. The jewellery has a nasty effect on Herma, as a possession transforms her body and deteriorates her mind, threatening the guest and her unborn baby.

As unseen forces within...

‘Pillow Party Massacre’ Review
Image
Stars: Sebastian Bjorn, Savannah Raye Jones, Laura Welsh, Jax Kellington, Nicolette Pullen, Allegra Sweeney, Chynna Rae Shurts | Written and Directed by Calvin Morie McCarthy

We’ve already had The Slumber Party Massacre, The Pyjama Party Massacre, Sandy Hook Lingerie Party Massacre, and even The Cheerleader Sleepover Slaughter and now writer/director Calvin Morie McCarthy has given us Pillow Party Massacre. Considering the reviews I gave his previous films I was surprised when the director sent me a screener of Pillow Party Massacre. Being the slasher fan that I am, however, I wasn’t going to question it, just hope for the best.

The film opens at a school dance where, as the last slow song plays Carter and Ashley sneak off for some time alone. But it’s a setup and ends up with Ashley getting humiliated. So humiliated she leaves the dance, and returns with a gun.

Two years later Sam,...

Exclusive Interview: Calvin McCarthy – character Josh Enders in The Last Slay Ride

Amazon : The Last Slay Ride

How did you get attached to The Last Slay Ride? – I had worked with the director (Jason Hawkins) on the last two of his projects prior to “Last Slay Ride”. One of which (Deleted) I played the lead role in. I chalk it up to the right place, right time, and a familiarity with the overall team.

What was your role in The Last Slay Ride? – I played the role of Josh. the director of the fictional film “Slash camp”, and bumbling fool that attempts to lead his friends through a fight of good and evil.

What is your favorite scene in the film? – I think my favorite scene was also my favorite to film; The Big vampire reveal. Which was some of the first stuff we shot, day three or four if I remember correctly.

‘Amityville Poltergeist’ Review
Image
Stars: Parris Bates, Conor Austin, Sydney Winbush, Rebecca Morse, Jon Ashley Hall | Written by Calvin Morie McCarthy, Jon Ashley Hall | Directed by Calvin Morie McCarthy

After Amityville Island, Amityville Asylum, Amityville Cornfield and Witches of Amityville Academy I was actually surprised to find out that nobody had made a film called Amityville Poltergeist before this. It seems like a natural combination, the infamous haunted house and the most infamous type of haunting.

Jim (Parris Bates; Fencesitters) is a broke college student. His friend Collin (Conor Austin) and Collin’s girlfriend Alyson (Sydney Winbush; Shrill) suggest selling his plasma but he hates needles. Instead, he gets a weekend gig house-sitting for Eunice (Rebecca Kimble or Rebecca Morse depending on whether you go by IMDb or the end credits) and her son Tony (Jon Ashley Hall) after what has to be one of the most awkward job interviews on record. During it,...
