The key races for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards couldn’t be more different.

The comedy categories appear to be heading for another showdown between The Bear — once again prompting an obligatory “Is it a drama or a comedy?” debate — and Hacks, with several returning shows still in the mix while the drama fields, which Shōgun dominated last year, are wide open.

While voters can, and in many cases should, absolutely go back to prior favorites like The White Lotus, Severance and The Last of Us, the THR television critics have recommendations on some familiar and some quirky and offbeat ways to fill out ballots.

Voting for the nomination round closes on Monday, June 23, with nominations announced on Tuesday, July 15. The 2025 Emmys will air on CBS and Paramount+ on Sept. 14, with Nate Bargatze serving as host.

IndieWire can proudly announce that filmmaker Liz Sargent won $1 million to fund her feature “Take Me Home.” The film will premiere at the 2026 Tribeca Festival after Sargent receives year-round mentorship and promotional support, plus the funding.

Sargent is the eighth winner of the largest film production prize in the world. The future of Laid on Peacock has been in limbo since December 2024 when the Stephanie Hsu and Zosia Mamet series premiered on the streamer. Since then, viewers have been wondering whether a second season was in store for the comedy, and now we finally have that answer.

Laid has officially been cancelled at Peacock, meaning there won't be a season 2. An exact reason wasn't given, though Deadline reports that the show didn't make it into the Nielsen streaming rankings, so the viewership numbers more than likely played a role in the decision.

It's going to be a one-season run for Laid, the romantic comedy series on Peacock. Despite having a strong cast with nearly unanimous praise from critics, the show won't be getting another season on the NBCUniversal platform.

Per Deadline, Laid has officially been canceled by Peacock after one season. The show premiered on the streaming platform on Dec. 19 with all eight episodes made available to watch simultaneously. Its response was stellar, as the show holds a score of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the show did not become a major streaming hit, as it didn't crack Nielsen's top 10 list, nor did it create substantial buzz on social media. It's not yet known if the show will be shopped around to other streaming platforms for a potential rescue.

Fast-rising stars Charles Melton and Stephanie Hsu are set to headline the voice cast of “In Waves,” the California surf-themed animated feature adapted from illustrator Aj Dungo’s celebrated graphic memoir.

Described as an “unconditional first love story, and tale of loss and memories,” the film — produced by Silex Films, Charades and Anonymous Content — is directed Phuong Mai Nguyen, a former student of French animation schools Gobelins and La Poudrière. Phuong Mai helmed episodes of the Silex-produced animated series “Brazen” and was Oscar-shortlisted for her short “My Home.”

Charades and Anonymous Content will show a promo-reel to buyers at the upcoming Cannes market.

Shelter PR, the bi-coastal PR firm repping some of the industry’s top talent that’s also a key player in the awards space, has promoted four senior publicists across its Los Angeles and New York offices.

The promotees are Jenny Tversky, Jessica Sze, Stephanie Kazanjian, and Larissa Saenz, who (with the exception of Saenz), worked alongside Shelter PR’s founding Partners — Marla Farrell, Cara Tripicchio and Christine Tripicchio — during their earlier tenure at Wkt Public Relations, the firm now known as Wolf Kasteler PR.

Named Executive Vice President, Tversky will oversee company and staff relations across both coasts.
