Focus Features Nabs Noomi Rapace’s Sci-Fi Thriller ‘Hot Spot’
Image
Focus Features has picked up the sci-fi thriller Hot Spot from director Agnieszka Smoczyńska.

The film, which stars Noomi Rapace, Andrzej Konopka and Reika Kirishima, wrapped production last week in Greece. Focus is reuniting with Smoczyńska after releasing her first English-language feature Silent Twins, which starred Black Panther breakout Letitia Wright and Tamara Lawrance.

“Agnieszka is a singular visionary whose work — be it about vampire mermaids, silent twins or a tech-ruled society — is both visually astounding and thematically prophetic, and we can’t wait to share her latest with the world,” Kiska Higgs, president of production and acquisitions at Focus, said in a statement.

The U.S. studio picked up all territories worldwide, except for Poland, Greece and France, for Hot Spot, which is based on script by Robert Bolesto. The indie is set in a near future society ruled by sentient artificial intelligence and has a private eye investigate...

Image
Paris-based sales house Charades has sold the Argentinian Western-inspired documentary “Gaucho Gaucho” across much of Europe.

The film — which won a Sundance Jury Prize in January and recently played at Cph:dox — has landed deals with Tandem (France), Filmin (Spain), Selmer Media, M2, Praesens (Switzerland) and Bantam Films (Benelux). Variety understands a U.K. sale is currently under discussion.

According to an official logline, “She Loved Blossoms More” follows, “three brothers [who] build an unusual time-machine in order to bring their long-dead mother back to life. ‘Hot Spot’ – Dystopian Witchcraft Tale on the Way from ‘The Lure’ Director Agnieszka Smoczyńska
Agnieszka Smoczynska
Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Smoczyńska‘s feature debut, the horror mermaid musical The Lure, dazzled upon release in 2017. While her English-language debut Silent Twins starring Letitia Wright is set to debut this Fall, the filmmaker’s current project, Hot Spot, has our attention.

The filmmaker spoke with Variety today about her work, teasing Hot Spot‘s premise “about a disillusioned private eye Djonny, investigating a murder at a refugee camp and confronting a cyber witch who takes control of his life.”

Smoczyńska had us at “cyber witch.”

“In Europe, it’s good to have co-productions. It’s better for arthouse films, especially nowadays. On this sci-fi film, based somewhere in the future, we will have Greece, France and Poland on board,” the filmmaker said of Hot Spot‘s production. In other words, don’t expect a fully English-language feature in Hot Spot.

Hot Spot will also reunite Smoczyńska with screenwriter Robert Bolesto,...

Video From New Knock At The Cabin Trailer Shows The Apocalypse Is Real
Image
“If you fail to choose, the world will perish.”

The name of the Knock At The Cabin poster from Universal Pictures, featuring Dave Bautista, Abby Quinn, Rupert Grint and Nikki Amuka-Bird, is titled “4Horsemen” and in an earlier post, we asked the question: Could they be the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse? Death, Famine, War, and Conquest? Each figure on the poster are holding a different “weapon.” In the Book of Revelation, these Four Horsemen represent a vision of harbingers of the Last Judgment, setting a divine end-time upon the world.

The first horseman rides a white horse, carries a bow, and is given a crown as a figure of conquest, perhaps invoking pestilence, Christ, or the Antichrist. The second carries a sword and rides a red horse as the creator of (civil) war, conflict, and strife. The third, a food merchant, rides a black horse symbolizing famine and carries the scales.

‘Knock at the Cabin’ Will Be Shyamalan’s First “R” Rated Movie Since ‘The Happening’
Image
Up next from M. Night Shyamalan is the Paul Tremblay adaptation Knock at the Cabin, and we’ve learned this week that the film will be released with an “R” rating attached to it.

The reason this is notable is because M. Night Shyamalan’s movies tend to be rated “PG-13.” In fact, the only other Shyamalan movie that was rated “R” was The Happening back in 2008, with all other Shyamalan-directed movies being rated “PG-13.” That includes The Sixth Sense, Signs, Unbreakable, The Village, Lady in the Water, Split, The Visit, Glass, and last year’s Old.

Knock at the Cabin has been rated “R” for “Violence and language.”

Universal will release the thriller in theaters on February 3, 2023.

Image
“Avatar” star Sigourney Weaver revealed some insight about James Cameron’s highly anticipated “Avatar: The Way of Water,” which premieres Dec. 16.

“The story is about family, about our families trying to stay together [and] the lengths to which we all go to protect each other and protect the place where we live,” Weaver told Variety at a special screening for her new film “The Good House” in New York City. “It’s very much based on Jim’s family and his joy in the family; and also, how vulnerable you are when you have children.”

A hit for over a decade since its original release, “Avatar” once again dominated the box office with an impressive re-release in theaters. Ahead of the upcoming sequel, the 2009 sci-fi epic wowed with 30 million worldwide in ticket sales, as reported on Sept. 25.

With a second lockdown looming amid a spike in coronavirus cases across Greece, Giorgos Karnavas, of production outfit Heretic, knew it was a race against time to wrap shooting on “Triangle of Sadness,” a satire directed by Oscar nominee and Palme d’Or winner Ruben Östlund.

The production team nevertheless received a special permit from the government to continue the shoot, which wraps Nov. 13. “We had the support of multiple Greek authorities during the whole way through,” said Karnavas, who...
