Scotland’s DIY Filmmakers Forge Ahead as Public Funding Prioritizes Development
Image
As Screen Scotland doubled its development investment earlier this summer with the launch of its £1.2 million ($1.6 million) Talent Builder scheme, the move was welcomed as a timely expansion of early-career support. Aimed at nurturing emerging voices, the initiative built on the agency’s longstanding emphasis on script development and short-form funding.

“We just want to give people more opportunity,” Kieran Hannigan, head of scripted at Screen Scotland, tells Variety. “People’s practice evolves, their taste evolves, their skill evolves. And we want to give the space to grow and showcase what they’re able to do.”

Yet inevitably, there will never be enough public money to go around.

A growing wave of filmmakers, frequently working in collectives, sometimes alone, is turning away from the conventional trajectory. Operating on limited means, they are writing with their resources in mind, shooting quickly or in grabbed moments between other work, and building peer-to-peer...

Studiocanal Takes Minority Equity Stake In UK ‘The Outrun’ Production House Brock Media
Image
Studiocanal has acquired a minority stake in Sarah Brocklehurst’s UK production house Brock Media as part of a partnership deal announced by the pan-European production and distribution arm of Canal+ on Wednesday.

BAFTA-nominated producer Brocklehurst originally launched Brock Media in 2022 with a partnership deal with BBC Studios, covering overheads and support for development.

This deal expired at the beginning of 2025 but BBC Studio continues to have an option to distribute Brock Media projects which were developed under the agreement and while it was in place.

In between times, the company made waves with Nora Fingscheidt’s The Outrun, the award-winning feature film adaptation of Amy Liptrot’s best-selling memoir, directed by Nora Fingscheidt and starring Saoirse Ronan and Paapa Essiedu, which was distributed in multiple territories by Studiocanal.

The film premiered at the Sundance, Berlin, Edinburgh and Telluride film festivals picking up awards with the Critics Circle and IFTAs,...

Studiocanal Buys Into Brock Media, the U.K. Producer of ‘The Outrun,’ as It Looks to Deliver More Female-Driven Films and Series
Image
Studiocanal, the film and TV division of pay TV banner Canal + Group, has bought into Sarah Brocklehurst’s Brock Media, the London-based production company behind Nora Fingscheidt’s “The Outrun” starring Saoirse Ronan.

Besides “The Outrun” – which played at Sundance, Berlin, Edinburgh and Telluride, and was nominated for two BAFTAs — Brock Media has developed a slate of 18 series featuring stories across all genres since being launched three years ago.

Studiocanal previously collaborated with Brock Media on “The Outrun” which it distributed in theaters in multiple territories.

Now part of Studiocanal, Brock Media will continue developing a robust slate of film and TV series with Sophie Mitchell, Brock Media’s head of TV development, working closely with M-k Kennedy, Studiocanal’s managing director of television, and her team.

“We greatly admire Sarah’s passion for producing bold and often female driven stories such as which feel important and inspiring in addition...

“The whole plot twist is dumb”: Sandra Bullock Gave Her Best in a 3 Year Old Netflix Movie That Wasted Her Talent on a Really Stupid Script
Image
Just imagine what a great movie it could have been, with powerhouse actors like Sandra Bullock, Viola Davis, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Jon Bernthal sharing the screen to bring a story to life. But star power alone isn’t enough when the story itself has no real potential.

That’s exactly what happened with Netflix’s 2021 drama The Unforgivable. Despite Bullock’s talent, the film wastes her performance on a weak script that falls apart, especially after its absurd ‘plot twist.’

Sandra Bullock plays a convicted killer seeking redemption in The Unforgivable

Sandra Bullock has been on a break since her 2022 film The Lost City. However, before taking a hiatus from the spotlight, the actress also starred in the Netflix film, The Unforgivable.

Directed by Nora Fingscheidt, the film follows Ruth, a convicted ‘cop killer,’ who is released after serving a twenty-year sentence for shooting a cop, who came to evict her and her five-year-old sister,...

Michael Bay
OutRun | Michael Bay said to be directing an adaptation of Sega’s arcade classic
Michael Bay
Sega’s racing arcade classic OutRun could be getting a film adaptation at Universal courtesy of director Michael Bay. Let’s hope the news is more than a passing breeze.

As moving as it was, director Nora Fingscheidt’s The Outrun still left us faintly disappointed that it didn’t involve a young couple racing across 1980s USA in a red Ferrari. Thankfully, Michael Bay could be about to make our retro arcade dreams a reality.

Over the weekend, it was reported that Universal plans to adapt Sega’s 1986 racing coin-op, OutRun, with Michael Bay directing and Sydney Sweeney set to produce. According to Deadline’s exclusive, the OutRun movie will be made through Platinum Dunes, the studio he co-founded with producer Brad Fuller, while the script will be written by Jayson Rothwell.

Videogame adaptations have brought in sizeable returns for film studios in recent years, with Sonic The Hedgehog...

A 18 Year Old Sandra Bullock Movie Became a Streaming Hit Despite Having a Rt Score Worse Than ‘Madame Web’
Image
If you ever have the chance to ask Sandra Bullock the movie she most regrets starring in, her answer would probably be Speed 2. Well, that’s what she told toofab during the promotional tour for The Lost City back in 2022. And don’t even bother asking her about the sequel to the original Miss Congeniality movie, ironically titled ‘Armed and Fabulous’. That would be her second choice, right off the bat.

One could argue that Bullock’s filmography is proof that not every franchise extension has the potential to strike gold, even for Hollywood royalty. But there happens to be one standalone Sandra Bullock film that’s doubly bad (if not worse) than both those choices on her regret-o-meter. German director Mennan Yapo’s Hollywood debut with Premonition (2007) had Bullock leading the charge of a sinking ship right from the start of its 96-minute runtime.

Rona
Stay-at-Home Seven: March 3 to 9 by Amber Wilkinson

The Outrun, Netflix, streaming now

Putting what is quite possibly the best English-language central performance from the past year not to make the Oscar shortlist, Saorise Ronan is riveting as a recovering alcoholic trying to get her life back together on the Orkney Islands. She plays Rona, whose meltdown with booze we see in London set flashbacks, which director Nora Fingscheidt - who co-adapts Amy Liptrott’s memoir for the screen with the writer - weaves seamlessly with the present. Everything hinges on Ronan’s carefully calibrated performance which carries us from the alcohol-fuelled highs, without ever celebrating them, to the additional challenges she faces back home, where her bipolar father (Stephen Dillane) struggles with his own mental health. There may be some familiar beats to this story but the way Rona is framed by and draws strength from nature strikes a unique note.

‘Peacock’ Is a Cinematic Social Media Age Metaphor That Dissects Self-Presentation With Subtle Humor
Image
Austrian writer-director Bernhard Wenger‘s feature directing debut Peacock dissects the themes of identity and self-presentation in the age of social media but it doesn’t hit you over the head with a hammer. Actually, it doesn’t even mention social media much at all.

Peacock, an Austrian-German co-production that world premiered at the Venice Critics’ Week last year and gets its U.K. debut at the Glasgow Film Festival on Oscar Sunday, with another screening on Monday, features German rising star Albrecht Schuch (Edward Berger‘s All Quiet on the Western Front, Andreas Kleinert’s Dear Thomas, Nora Fingscheidt’s System Crasher) as Matthias, along with the likes of Anton Noori, and Julia Franz Richter.

“Matthias is a master of performance, slipping seamlessly into any role demanded by his rent-a-companion company’s clients – from art-loving boyfriend to Good Samaritan and dutiful son,” notes a synopsis. “His people-pleasing attitude has...

Picture: StudioCanal / Sony Pictures Classics

Nora Fingscheidt’s indie adaptation of the 2016 Amy Liptrot novel is coming to both Netflix in the United Kingdom and the United States following the movie’s theatrical run and marks the first time it’s been available on a streaming platform. It comes to the two countries under different pay-1 streaming deals.

Saoirse Ronan headlines the movie as Rona, a 29-year-old who heads back to her home in the Orkney Islands to reconnect with her past and the isolated home she grew up in. It’s a time to reconnect after now spending the last decade in London. The cast is rounded out by solid performances by Saskia Reeves, Stephen Dillane, Lauren Lyle, and Paapa Essiedu.

Certified Fresh on RottenTomatoes, the movie achieved widespread critical acclaim following its initial launch at Sundance and then its wider theatrical rollout in late 2024. Julian Roman for MovieWeb wrote,...

‘Conclave’ Wins 4 BAFTAs, Including Best Film, at 2025 Awards (Complete Winners List)
Ralph Fiennes, Isabella Rossellini, John Lithgow, and Stanley Tucci in Conclave (2024)
“Conclave” won Best Film at the 2025 EE BAFTA Film Awards, leading the pack with four BAFTAs overall. The British equivalent of the Oscars took place February 16 from the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in central London, honoring the best in film for its 78th annual edition.

Edward Berger’s “Conclave” led all films with 12 BAFTA nominations, and it won Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Adapted Screenplay for Peter Straughan, and Best Editing. It’s an upset after “Anora” swept all three of the DGAs, PGAs, and WGAs. The last film to win those three prizes, but not Best Picture at the Oscars was “Brokeback Mountain,” but then again, it did win the BAFTA for Best Film.

“Anora” did have a strong showing though, with Mikey Madison pulling off an upset and winning Leading Actress over Demi Moore for “The Substance.” “Anora” also won Best Casting, though Madison lost...

European Film Market Chief on Shielding Sales Agents as They Face Challenges: ‘I’m Really Mindful of Their Cost Sensitivity’
Image
In May, the Berlin Film Festival appointed Tanja Meissner as director of Berlinale Pro*, a role that includes leading the European Film Market as well as overseeing Berlinale Co-Production Market, Berlinale Talents, its program for young filmmakers, and the World Cinema Fund.

Meissner, a German-French citizen, has more than 25 years of experience in the film industry, including working at leading sales agencies Celluloid Dreams, from 2000 to 2007, and Memento Films, from 2007 to 2021.

Running the EFM is particularly challenging as its core clients, the sales agents, are under increasing economic pressure. “The sales agents are still a very important link in the value chain for independent films, and if the market narrows down too much, it’s beneficial to no one,” Meissner tells Variety. “So, I’m really mindful of their cost sensitivity. We kept the prices at the same level as last year because we want to respond to the challenges that they are facing.

‘The Ballad of Wallis Island’ Review: James Griffiths’ Soulful and Winsome Crowd-Pleaser Makes the Heart Sing
Image
In James Griffiths’ delightfully eccentric comedy “The Ballad of Wallis Island,” Charles (Tim Key) is the kind of sweet human being you instantly want all the good things for. It might be tough, for instance, to feel genuinely happy that someone who isn’t in urgent financial need had won a big-time lottery twice — unless of course that person is Charles. The soft-spoken chap is so warm-hearted, open-handed and full of puns that you won’t actually mind that good fortune has repeatedly found Charles and allowed him to retire to a gorgeous (fictional) Welsh island, after he traveled all around the world.

A co-writer (along with co-lead and his longtime comedy partner Tom Basden), Key is the main reason this cozily windswept and romantically sea-sprayed fable — based on the trio’s 2007 short film “The One and Only Herb McGwyer Plays Wallis Island” — succeeds in earning the goodwill of the audience.

‘Anora,’ ‘A Complete Unknown,’ and ‘Wicked’ among WGA Awards nominees
Image
Anora, A Complete Unknown, Challengers, Hit Man, and Wicked are among the 2025 Writers Guild of America Awards nominees.

In Best Original Screenplay, Anora and Challengers are up against A Real Pain, Civil War, and My Old Ass. The Best Adapted Screenplay lineup features A Complete Unknown, Dune: Part Two, Hit Man, Nickel Boys, and Wicked.

The nominations were announced Wednesday, a week after the guild postponed its scheduled Jan. 9 announcement due to the Los Angeles wildfires.

As previously reported, dozens of scripts — including several top Oscar hopefuls — were ineligible for consideration this year. A screenplay is ineligible if it’s produced outside of the WGA’s collective bargaining agreement or written by a non-union member.

The ineligible adapted scripts were Golden Globe champ Conclave (by Peter Straughan), Emilia Pérez (by Jacques Audiard), I’m Still Here (by Walter Salles), Inside Out 2 (by Meg LeFauve and Dave Holstein with a...

Soundtrack Mix #34: The Sounds of 2024
Image
Illustrations by Stephanie Lane Gage. When making my sound work, I always try to bend the material in front of me to find alternative possibilities of context or (re)context. Here, I was drawn to so many personal favorites, moods, and textures that these 70-odd minutes are more akin to a year-end work of catharsis. The result is as much a personal mix as a 2024 roundup. This was aided by a number of films with great music supervision, particularly four heavy hitters: Love Lies Bleeding (all films 2024), Civil War, Dahomey, and Janet Planet. Artists like Throbbing Gristle, Anna Domino, Silver Apples, Suicide, Dean Blunt, and Laurie Anderson offered a huge prop of character within these films. They could set each film in a specific time and place, or, in the case of Civil War, give a punk, psychedelic energy to a near-future world.Staying through the end credits is important...

2025 BAFTA Awards longlists revealed: ‘Emilia Pérez’ ties record with 15 mentions
Image
Emilia Pérez and Conclave led the British Academy of Film and Television Arts longlist selections on Friday, the first step toward securing BAFTA Awards nominations when the list of official 2025 award contenders is revealed on Jan. 15.

Netflix’s top contender Emilia Pérez landed on 15 longlists — tying a record set by Netflix’s All Quiet on the Western Front two years ago and Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon, and Barbie last year. Zhuo-Ning Su’s Top 10 Films of 2024
Image
Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2024, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.

Perhaps in a year where wars are raging, the planet is burning, and the cruelest people are elected to the highest offices, we don’t deserve the best movies. You can find plenty of films that bring joy over the past twelve months, for sure. But if we’re talking about the overall level of awesome-ness of the cinematic offerings, about works that feel undeniable, it seems to me that 2024 did not deliver the way, say, 2023 did.

Then again, maybe that’s just me being grumpy and anxious from all the ways the world offscreen is going wrong, because who can deny the electrifying energy and humanist glow of Sean Baker’s Anora? Or the funny, phantasmagoric family portrait that is Tyler Taormina’s Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point?...

Timothée Chalamet Reveals Singing “War” During ‘A Complete Unknown’ & Saoirse Ronan Says She’d Like To Make A Musical: BFI In Conversation
Image
Ladybird (2017) and Little Women (2019) co-stars Timothée Chalamet and Saoirse Ronan reunited at the BFI Southbank in London on December 18 for a conversation about their careers, collaborations with each other and new films.

When discussing his portrayal of Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s upcoming musical biopic A Complete Unknown, Oscar nominee Chalamet revealed that he was nervous to play Song To Woody for the first time and that there was a “whole war on the movie” about whether he should use prerecords or sing the music live.

“I was in the camp that wanted to do it live because it’s folk music and Bob Dylan was certainly matching his voice. So, I didn’t want to be matching me, mimicking Bob Dylan in a studio in L.A. 6 months before we shot,” said Chalamet. “When that song went well [Song to Woody], I felt like I had a green light to work...

Warner Bros has set a February 13, 2026, release for Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights.

Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi star in the adaptation of Emily Bronte’s novel. MRC and Robbie’s LuckyChap are producing.

Fennell will write and direct the mid-19th century gothic tale of obsession and desire between Cathy Earnshaw and Heathcliff.

Warner Bros prevailed in a fierce bidding war for Fennell’s follow-up to Saltburn, reportedly paying around $80m for rights.

Netflix had previously tried to take Wuthering Heights off the table with a $150m bid that was rejected by Fennell and Robbie, who wanted a theatrical release.

How Globe-Trotting Locations and Foreign Tax Incentives Helped Propel ‘Dune 2,’ ‘Queer,’ ‘Maria’ and Other Contenders Into the Oscar Race
Image
This year’s Academy Award contenders take audiences on journeys across space and time, from the Colosseum of ancient Rome to the drug dens of mid-century Mexico City, from the cramped confines of a network TV studio to the infinite sandscapes of a far-off planet. Making these Oscar hopefuls took a variety of factors, including peerless production design, a range of foreign tax incentives, the work of countless location scouts and a bit of moviemaking sleight of hand to transform even familiar places into entirely unexpected destinations.

Here’s where filming took place for some of Variety’s favorite movies heating up this award season:

Conclave

Perhaps a papal dispensation might’ve allowed Edward Berger’s Vatican drama to shoot in the Sistine Chapel, but the production team opted for a no-less-formidable Rome institution, Cinecittà Studios, to build a stunning replica. The chapel and the palatial Casa Santa Marta were...

‘Blitz’ and ‘The Outrun’ Star Saoirse Ronan Reveals the One Thing That Tells Her She Has to Do a Movie
Image
Strength comes in different forms, and two new films with Irish actress Saoirse Ronan tell the tale. In Steve McQueen’s high-octane World War II drama “Blitz,” set in an embattled London, Ronan is Rita, a single mother searching for her young son who’s disappeared from a train ostensibly taking children to safety in the British countryside. As bombs fall and subway stations flood, Rita is just about the fiercest thing in London, abandoning the bomb factory where she works to find her boy at all costs.

In Nora Fingscheidt’s “The Outrun,” on the other hand, her character of Rona is an alcoholic who summons up the power to fight her demons by turning to the solitude of a remote island off the coast of Scotland.

“I’m delighted that they’ve come out when they have, especially because I have been away for a while,” said Ronan,...

Saoirse Ronan Reveals Her New Perspective From ‘The Outrun’ And Her Fear Of Singing In ‘Blitz’: “I Felt Very Exposed”
Image
Saoirse Ronan is having a moment. Which is not necessarily a new experience, given she has four Oscar nominations to her credit. Now 30, the Irish-born actress first made the Academy cut at 14 for her supporting role in Atonement, which she followed with leading roles in Brooklyn, Ladybird and Little Women. But this year, playing a single mother in Steve McQueen’s London wartime drama Blitz, and a woman fighting her demons in Nora Fingscheidt’s addiction story The Outrun — Ronan’s first project as a producer — the goalposts for what she can achieve have been widened.

Deadline: At this stage of your career, when you’re thinking about what you want to do next, do you choose in terms of personal challenge or people you want to work with?

Saoirese Ronan: I would say it’s both of those things. It’s become more about the type of filmmakers I want to work with,...

‘The Outrun’ Helped Saoirse Ronan Deal With Addicts In Her Life – Contenders Los Angeles
Image
Saoirse Ronan said alcoholism was a subject she “was always threatening to explore.” When she found Amy Liptrot’s book The Outrun, she decided to also make her producorial debut in developing it.

“Alcoholism for me was like the monster in the corner that I hadn’t dealt with for a very long time,” Ronan said. “It caused me a lot of pain and resentment and confusion in the way that it does for a loved one of an addict, in particular an alcoholic because so much of it happens in quite an intimate space. So I had been on the receiving end of that and could see how it can really destroy lives.”

Liptrot’s book was autobiographical. Ronan and director Nora Fingscheidt mutually agreed to change Ronan’s character’s name to Rona so that she would have more creative freedom. More on that soon, but first Ronan...

It’s Not Just Saoirse Ronan’s Job to Make an Addiction Drama Look This Easy — It’s Her Passion
Image
Editor’s note: This story was originally published on October 7, 2024. “The Outrun” is now available for purchase on various streaming platforms.

As written, the question was meant to be open-ended: “How do you the find emotional truth in a character?” If there’s any connective thread between the various roles in Saoirse Ronan’s impressive body of work, it’s that: some ineffable honesty about the emotional journey she’s carrying through her characters.

Fortunately, Ronan is astute enough and open enough to wrestle with such a question with grace and insight. That’s probably why she’s such a good actress.

“How do you breathe?,” Ronan responded with a laugh when asked about said emotional truth during a recent sitdown with IndieWire. “It sounds a bit pretentious to say, but I have grown up disappearing into the make-believe, and that helps me make sense out of the real world.
