Outlander: Blood of My Blood Brings Back Voiceovers - Showrunner Explains Why
Image
Outlander: Blood of My Blood's decision to back a forgotten element from the original show is explained by key members of the creative team. The prequel to the hit Starz series follows the parents of Claire Beauchamp (Caitríona Balfe) during World War I and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) in 18th century Scotland.

The cast in Outlander: Blood of My Blood features Harriet Slater and Jamie Roy as Jamie's parents, Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser, while Hermione Corfield and Jeremy Irvine play Claire's parents, Julia Moriston and Henry Beauchamp.

During an interview with ScreenRant for Outlander: Blood of My Blood, showrunner Matthew B. Roberts and executive producer Maril Davis explain why the series includes voiceovers from Julia. They explain that it is meant to be reminiscent of Claire's voiceovers in Outlander's earlier seasons and is crucial to the romance between Julia and Henry. Check out their comments below:

Diana Gabaldon's Limited Involvement in Outlander: Blood of My Blood Prequel Series Explained
Image
The Outlander universe continues to grow on screen with the prequel series Outlander: Blood of My Blood, but to what extent was author Diana Gabaldon involved in its creation? Outlander is one of the most beloved and successful examples of period romance storytelling of all time, combining real-world history with the fantastical aspects of time travel.

Where the original Outlander series focuses on 18th-century Scottish Highlander Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and WWII nurse Claire Randall's (Caitríona Balfe) century-spanning romance, Outlander: Blood of My Blood instead reveals the stories of Jamie and Claire's parents. Since their parents play a nearly non-existent role in Outlander's storytelling, they were the perfect, consequence-free subjects for a prequel series.

In an interview with ScreenRant's Tatiana Hullender for Outlander: Blood of My Blood, showrunner Matthew B. Roberts was asked about Outlander author Diana Gabaldon's part in creating the story of Claire's parents and...

Outlander: Blood of My Blood Cast Go Deep on the Premiere: Ellen’s Feistiness, Henry’s Ptsd, a Game of Thrones Nod (?) and More — Watch
Image
Can everyone time-travel except us?!

That’s how we felt after watching the premiere of Outlander‘s prequel, Blood of My Blood, which got underway Friday. The spinoff’s first two episodes introduced us to Jamie’s parents, Ellen and Brian, and Claire’s parents, Julia and Henry. By the end of the first hour, via the wonder of time-travel, all four of them exist in the 18th century. (For details on the how and why, make sure to check out the premiere recap, which covers Episodes 1 and 2.)

Outlander: Blood of My Blood Cast — New Faces and Returning Actors Revealed
Image
Outlander: Blood of My Blood is the prequel to Starz’s hit historical drama series, Outlander. This show is all set to explore Jamie and Claire Fraser’s parents’ origin stories. Season 1 premiered on Aug. 8, 2025, and season 2 is already in production. The show is set in England during World War I and also in 18th-century Scotland. The dual timelines will explore a fresh story with fresh cast and characters who will redefine the iconic love story.

Outlander was all bout time travel, enduring love, and rebellion; but this prequel show will be more about how the traits, decisions, and conflicts of one generation shape the next one. The lack of source material means that the makers will get to shape this new world while still honoring Diana Gabaldon’s creation. With Outlander ending with season 8, the new Blood of My Blood chapter will allow fans to escape into the same world again.

‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ Episode 1-2 Review: Can Julia Keep Her Spirit Alive in a World That Wants to Break Her?
Image
Do you remember the vows that once bound Jamie Fraser and Claire Beauchamp across time and turmoil? Those fiery words, “Blood of my blood, bone of my bone,” now echo into a new generation or rather, an older one. Starz’s Outlander: Blood of My Blood opens its first two episodes not with a whimper, but with a thunderclap of longing, legacy, and lethal love politics.

And I’ll tell you this upfront: this isn’t just another soft-spoken prequel. It’s a slow-burning candle dipped in the same wax of desire and despair that made the original series addictive. Across its ambitious two-part premiere, Blood of My Blood dives headfirst into two separate but inextricably linked timelines, the 18th-century Scottish Highlands and the World War I trenches of Europe, introducing us to Jamie and Claire’s parents with a beguiling mix of reverence and reinvention.

There’s lust, lineage,...

‘Outlander: Blood of my Blood’ Stars Break Down Fated Love Stories, Tease Obstacles to Come
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “Outlander: Blood of my Blood” Episodes 1 and 2.

As Starz prepares to bid farewell to Sam Heughan’s Jamie and Caitriona Balfe’s Claire when “Outlander” airs its final season next year, the franchise turns its attention to the fated love stories of their parents with prequel series “Blood of my Blood.”

Harriet Slater and Jamie Roy play Jamie’s parents, Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser, who struggle with what the actors liken to a “Romeo and Juliet” conflict coming from rival clans, while Hermione Corfield and Jeremy Irvine play Claire’s parents, Julia Moriston and Henry Beauchamp, who unite amid the treacherous conditions of WWI only to be split up again.

As the newcomers took on the roles, they faced a careful balancing act of finding “core similarities” between their characters and either Jamie or Claire, while trying not to replicate Heughan’s or Balfe’s performance.

‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ Review: Starz Prequel Is a Richly Rendered, Delectably Romantic Treat
Image
In the Netflix dramedy Too Much, a brokenhearted American, Jess, makes the move across the pond, inspired in part by daydreams of stately castles, rolling green hills and dashing gentlemen professing their ardent admiration. She finds, instead, a scruffy musician in a dirty bathroom stall. The connection they strike up may not be the stuff fairy tales are made of, but it’s all the sweeter for being so raw and messy and real.

Or … maybe not. Starz’s latest Diana Gabaldon-based saga, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, is precisely the sort of thing that inspires moonstruck fantasies like Jess’ in the first place, filled as it is with scenic vistas, time-traveling contrivances and prettily suffering soulmates overcoming impossible odds. It’s also a reminder of how incomparably potent such a story can be when it’s done just right. Richly imagined, audaciously epic and, above all, unabashedly and deliriously romantic,...

‘Blood of My Blood’ Star Harriet Slater Talks Joining the “Tight-Knit” ‘Outlander’ Universe, the Perils of Scottish Weather and Period Drama Superiority
Image
Harriet Slater is a self-proclaimed period drama superfan.

“They’re one of my favorite things to act in and also watch,” the English actress tells The Hollywood Reporter about the likes of Downton Abbey and Titanic. “I love the escapism.”

It’s fitting, then, that she’s leading the spinoff to the wildly popular Scotland-set time travel hit Outlander, titled Blood of My Blood, premiering Friday on Starz. As the platform prepares to bid farewell to Outlander in its eighth and final season early next year, the prequel series details the origin stories of the parents of Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan) and Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe), fan-favorite characters of the original show based on Diana Gabaldon’s book.

“It’s the love story that tells the love story,” Slater says about Blood of My Blood, in which she stars as Jamie’s mother, Ellen MacKenzie. It follows Hermione Corfield as Julia Moriston,...

‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ Aftershow: Stars on Brian & Ellen’s Forbidden Love, Julia & Henry’s Time Travel (Video)
Image
[Warning: The below and video above contain Major spoilers for Outlander: Blood of My Blood, Season 1 Episodes 1 & 2, “Providence,” and “S.W.A.K. Starz debuted two episodes in celebration of the premiere, offering a peek into the beginning of both romances, which start at two different times, with Brian and Ellen finding a spark in 18th-century Scotland, and Julia and Henry connecting amid World War I in England. But the road to romance isn’t so easy as the show kicks off with Red Jacob MacKenzie’s (Peter Mullan) death, leaving Clan MacKenzie leaderless. While Ellen would be the ...

Outlander: Blood of My Blood Premiere Review: Romance, Power Plays, and a Strong First Impression
Image
I’ll admit it — when Starz announced an Outlander prequel, my first thought was, “Do we really need this?”

Seven seasons deep into Jamie and Claire’s saga, we’ve been spoiled with epic romance, political intrigue, and the kind of gut-punch plot twists that would send lesser shows packing.

A prequel felt like a gamble, especially one without our beloved central couple.

(Courtesy of Starz)

But two episodes into Outlander: Blood of My Blood, I get it. This isn’t just an exercise in nostalgia — it’s a ruthless, romantic chess game set decades before Jamie and Claire ever locked eyes.

And the board is stacked with people who make the worst possible choices at the most dramatic possible times. It’s messy, it’s political, and it’s downright addictive.

Outlander: Blood of My Blood Is A Sweeping Love Story

Let’s start with Elizabeth MacKenzie. Fresh off her father’s death,...

‘Outlander’ Prequel Showrunner Teases a Surprising Connection to an Original Series Character
Image
The Outlander Season 7 finale featured a major surprise for fans after Claire (Caitríona Balfe) discovered that she might be connected to a new character, Frances (Florrie Wilkinson). The logic was that Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire's daughter Faith, whom they thought was deceased, did indeed survive, and Frances was their grandchild. All of it was catalyzed by a song Claire heard Frances sing, a song from the 20th century that Claire used to sing. Did Faith survive and remember the song somehow? That's the mystery that carries into Season 8 — the final season. However, things are bound to get more complicated according to recent comments from a star of the prequel series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood.

Hermoine Coffield plays Claire's mother, Julia, and she teased that Frances' song might be a big connection between the world of the flagship series and that of the prequel. "There is meant to be a link,...

Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 1 Review — A Gorgeous Return to Inverness
Image
While Outlander once felt like a potential fantasy romance takeover for Starz, the series slowly faded from picking up nominations from award bodies. While the series was never quite the awards magnet many hoped it would be for the network, it has gained an extremely strong following. It’s no surprise that a prequel series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, received the green light to go into a full series. As the original series prepares to end in 2026, a new series looking to pave a future for the franchise kicks off with gorgeous craftwork and strong performances. While it still features some of Outlander‘s flaws and a built-in audience, Starz has another hit on its hands.

Outlander: Blood of My Blood Plot

The prequel series follows two timelines and intertwined stories across the centuries. After the death of Red Jacob MacKenzie (Peter Mullan), the power structures in the Scottish Highlands are changing.

Outlander: Blood of My Blood Showrunner & EP on Growing the Franchise With Dual Love Stories
Image
When Outlander: Blood of My Blood premieres tomorrow on Starz, it won’t just expand the Fraser family saga — it will explore two central love stories that shape the generations to come.

The prequel tells the tales of Jamie Fraser’s parents, Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater) and Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy), as well as Clare’s parents, Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield) and Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine).

I spoke with showrunner Matthew B. Roberts and executive producer Maril Davis about the timing of the series, how they balanced the dual romances, and what it took to create a new chapter in the Outlander universe that can stand on its own.

(Starz)

Roberts explained that while Blood of My Blood may feel perfectly timed, the project had been in the works for quite some time.

“I pitched this quite a while ago, but I think the world kind of got in the way of us making it.

‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ Debuts With a Magical Rotten Tomatoes Score Ahead of Premiere
Image
Outlander won’t be back for another couple of months, but its highly anticipated prequel series, Blood of My Blood, premieres in about twenty-four hours. The historical series goes back in time to follow the parents of both protagonists from the original series, Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and Claire Beauchamp Fraser (Caitríona Balfe) and will conclude its debut season after ten episodes. As fans count down the remaining hours, reviews are already in for Outlander: Blood of My Blood, including on Rotten Tomatoes, where it has received a fantastic rating from critics.

As of this writing, the Outlander prequel boasts an admirable 92% rating based on 12 critics’ reviews, eleven of which are positive. One such review by Cbr’s Nicholas Brooks describes the seriesas “more than a prequel” that tells “a necessary story.” Similarly, in Collider’s review, Carly Lane praises Outlander: Blood of My Bloodfor being “a steamy, emotional, addictively...

Outlander: Blood of My Blood Stars Hermione Corfield & Jeremy Irvine on Love, Legacy, and Building Henry & Julia’s Story
Image
When Outlander: Blood of My Blood premieres, it will pull viewers deeper into the Fraser family legacy with the story of two central couples whose love stories shape generations.

Among them are Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine) and Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield), whose romance begins with letters and blossoms into a lasting, profound bond.

It may sound very similar to the original Outlander, but I can assure you that the prequel unfolds in a way that surprises everyone.

Is Outlander: Blood of My Blood Connected to Outlander?
Image
When it comes to Outlander, one truth remains unshakable: romance is never just about love. It’s about legacy, rebellion, sacrifice and now, that very torch is being passed to a new generation of time-crossed lovers in Outlander: Blood of My Blood. Yes, the upcoming Starz prequel is officially connected to the original series, serving as both its spiritual successor and narrative lifeline.

Set to take over after the main show bows out with its eighth season, Blood of My Blood will dive headfirst into the love stories of Claire and Jamie’s parents, threading their stories through two parallel time periods with poetic precision. The teaser trailer dropped in January, offering our first look at the split-era epic set against 18th-century Scotland and WWI Europe.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17 Episode 6 Review: Overage Drinking: A National Concern
Image
If you’re a dedicated fan, you’re going to love the callbacks in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17 Episode 6.

But nostalgia aside, overall, it wasn’t very memorable.

Part of it is that the pairings for each storyline were the same as those from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17 Episode 5. Two episodes in a row with the same dynamics can be a hard sell, as part of the appeal is the unique chemistry among the characters in insane situations.

(Patrick McElhenney/FX)

On top of that, Charlie and Mac’s storyline felt inconsequential. It was pretty clear that their adventure to find Frank was just a setup for the Bachelor crossover in the next two episodes.

The absence of Frank in this episode is very noticeable. While there are episodes where I felt he wasn’t needed, this one definitely required his presence to balance out the flow.

Enough Is Enough: It’s Time to Bring Hotch Back to the Bau
Image
The Aaron Hotchner Hiatus has been long enough, don’t you think?

Let me start off by saying that Criminal Minds is one of my comfort watches. It’s peak marathon TV, you know, the type of shows where a familiar episode catches your eye on the off chance you glance up at the screen, and suddenly, it’s eight hours later, and you fall down a marathon rabbit hole again.

When a series has been on as long as Criminal Minds, it practically falls into eras, and the Hotchner Era of Criminal Minds remains elite.

(CBS/Screenshot)

Maybe he wasn’t the heart of the series, I’ll leave you to argue over whether that was Reid, Garcia, or JJ, but for many years, he definitely was the backbone of the show.

And while Emily Prentiss is a badass who runs the Bau well with her own flavor and style,...

Countdown Season 1 Episode 9 Review: 10-33
Image
Everything that happens in Countdown Season 1 Episode 9 is what we’ve been waiting for. It’s been a rough journey, but the payoff was expected to be great.

Some may ask: Why are you reviewing a show that you don’t connect with? Because after watching hundreds of shows and thousands of episodes, some shows can surprise you.

While many try to grab your attention as soon as possible, others need time to cook. I thought Countdown would be one of those shows that should be allowed their time to cook, and boy, was I wrong. It does the bare minimum, and at this point, I’m not expecting any improvements.

Outlander knows a thing or two about romantic lines, especially when it comes to the show’s leading couple, Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan), and we have high hopes for even more great quotes in the upcoming prequel spinoff, Outlander: Blood of My Blood. Big Brother Spoilers: Mickey Suspects Betrayal as Houseguests Whisper About a Secret Power

Cracking the Code: How Prime Video is Quietly Taking the Young Adult Genre Crown
Image
It’s no secret that when we lost The CW and Freeform as we knew them, the last vestiges of Young Adult programming on network TV went with them.

As a result, there have been few series that emerged on network geared towards Young Adults, and if they did luck up and premiere, they weren’t long for this world.

Streaming filled the gap in that regard, with series we could binge to our hearts’ content from Outer Banks to Stranger Things. But there’s one streamer in particular who may have cracked the code in producing YA content that sticks and reaches target demos (Gen Z and women): Prime Video.

(Prime Video/Stephan Rabold)

What’s great is that those behind Amazon and MGM seem very aware of the impact their YA programming has and is leaning further into it rather than pulling away.

By doing so, they may be changing the game,...

Gordon Ramsay’s Secret Service Exclusive Sneak Peek Will Test Your Stomach — and Your Faith in Philly
Image
Oh. My. God.

This one is beyond the pale — even by Gordon Ramsay’s Secret Service standards.

This show seriously taps into my restaurant-going reserves, which grow by the week.

(Fox/Screenshot)

From his high-tech surveillance van, Gordon watches in horror as a so-called chef uses the same spatula to scrape muck from a grease gutter and then — without hesitation — shovels that sludge-covered tool straight back onto the griddle and into the sandwich.

A sandwich that’s on its way to two unsuspecting women who are just trying to enjoy a Philly cheesesteak in peace.

(Fox/Screenshot)

“The beef hasn’t even been cooked!” Gordon gasps, eyes wide.

You can feel his soul leave his body for a second. He covers his face, mutters “f**k” like it’s the only word left in the English language, and then — God bless him — makes the sign of the cross.

'Outlander' Prequel Series 'Blood of My Blod' Lands Stellar Rotten Tomatoes Score

Prequels allow audiences to see the events before the "now." You get to know the origins of your favorite characters, the issues their families faced, how their parents met and fell in love, and more. It allows the original production to continue without having to do a deep dive into their early lives, which is great for those who aren't a fan of scenes dragging on. That's why prequels like Outlander: Blood of My Blood are vital to deepening the stories of characters. The historical romance drama is set to premiere on Starz on August 8, 2025, and it already has a Rotten Tomatoes score that supports why it was renewed for a second season ahead of its series premiere.

Outlander: Blood of My Blood Review: The Deep Roots of a Romance
Image
The architects of the Outlander universe seem to operate on a principle of narrative determinism, a belief that a story’s present is irrevocably shaped by the ghosts of its past. With Outlander: Blood of My Blood, the franchise turns this belief into its central thesis, traveling back not just in time but in lineage.

This prequel abandons the familiar comfort of its central couple to excavate their very foundations. The series presents two distinct origin stories running in parallel. One is a tale of clan politics and forbidden passion in the damp, unforgiving Scottish Highlands of the early 18th century.

The other begins with the mechanized horror of World War I before taking a sharp turn into the unexpected. We meet the progenitors: Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser, Jamie’s parents, and Julia Moriston and Henry Beauchamp, Claire’s. Their lives are presented as the crucial first dominoes in...

Image
The “Outlander: Blood of My Blood” stars celebrated the prequel series’ premiere at the Directors Guild of America in Los Angeles on Monday night and were welcomed by the original show’s cast members Graham McTavish and Sam Heughan.

“It is a strange out-of-body experience,” McTavish said about the “Outlander” universe expansion for Variety’s Behind the Show presented by Starz. “It’s been 11 years since we did the first premiere in San Diego, and I remember that so well. They all come into this very fresh and new. They’ve never experienced anything like it before. It was the same for us. It’s like a mirror to see them going through the same process.”

Heughan also shared his excitement for fans to experience the new series as they await the highly anticipated final episodes of “Outlander” that will be released in 2026.

Image
Before viewers are whisked away to the Scottish Highlands in Starz‘s upcoming Outlander prequel series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, the cast and creatives dropped by TV Insider and TV Guide Magazine’s studio at San Diego Comic-Con to tease what’s ahead. For those less acquainted with the franchise, Outlander follows World War II combat nurse Claire (Caitriona Balfe) as she’s whisked away through time at the standing stones of Craigh Na Dun, placing her in the path of 18th-century Highlander warrior Jamie (Sam Heughan). Their epic love story spans centuries as they’ve come up against war and separation, and faced triumphant reunions. Blood of My Blood will explore two romances, the first being between Claire’s parents, Julia (Hermione Corfield) and Henry (Jeremy Irvine), in World War I England, and the second being Jamie’s parents, Brian (Jamie Roy) and Ellen (Harriet Slater). ‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ Review: Starz Prequel Series Offers Fan Service at Its Flirtiest and Finest
Image
For more than a decade now, “Outlander” has held mooning fans (and single-show Starz subscribers) in thrall, captivating with its time-traveling love story, historical drama and very spicy sex scenes. And yet, given that it’s based on a series of books by Diana Gabaldon, the show’s ending is in sight, with its eighth and final season due out early next year.

Fortunately for Starz (and for kilt-lovers), Gabaldon’s “Outlander” universe has always been sweeping and expansive. While she wrote the original series of books, spanning decades and continents, Gabaldon was tucking away backstory details in her mind, building a family history for main characters Jamie Fraser and Claire Randall.

And thus began “Outlander: Blood Of My Blood,” the new prequel series from Starz. Framed around source material from executive producer Gabaldon, the series follows the romantic arc of two couples: Jamie’s parents, Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy...

Image
The streets of West Hollywood were transformed into Scotland on Monday as Starz rolled out the blue carpet for the premiere of the Outlander prequel series, Blood of My Blood.

A bagpipe processional greeted guests, media, and eager fans, before any actors began arriving. Soon enough, the Outlander universe’s newest stars showed up brandishing Sharpies, which they used to autograph Blood of My Blood-branded tote bags that the Starz team handed out. The majority of the prequel’s cast are Hollywood newbies, but that didn’t stop the Outlander faithful from snapping selfies and gushing about how excited they were to fall in love with their characters. Jamie Fraser himself, Sam Heughan, hit the carpet to deafening cheers. He waved and winked to fans and slipped into some group photos. The frenzy amid onlookers didn’t calm until the Outlander leading man scooted inside for the screening of the prequel’s first episode.

Fan-Favorite 'Outlander' Star Makes Hilarious Surprise Appearance at 'Blood of My Blood's Sdcc Panel
Image
AnOutlanderalum made a surprise visit to the Outlander: Blood of My BloodSan Diego Comic-Con panel today and fans went wild with his unexpected (and hilarious) appearance. Graham McTavish, who plays Jamie's (Sam Heughan) uncle Dougal MacKenzie in the Starz series, jokingly intervened in the panel's Q&a session to ask Sam Retford a question of his own. Retford is about to play the younger version of Dougal in the prequel, and McTavish made sure to congratulate him on wearing the "wig and the beard". This comment was particularly funny because McTavish's character is bald in Outlander, whereas the younger version of Dougal will be played by an actor with a full head of hair.

After drawing some laughter from the crowd, McTavish continued. "I haven't seen any of the new show, but I'm genuinely, really looking forward to it," he said, before asking Retford the following. "How did you dive into the soft,...
