Image
This story was produced in partnership with DoubleBlind, an independent magazine covering the psychedelic industry.

In the spring of 2022, a 49-year-old New Yorker named David* headed south to Cancún, Mexico. He went to overcome his dependency on drugs using ibogaine, the primary alkaloid in a central African root bark named iboga. The lengthy visionary journey that typically ensues with this dream-inducing psychedelic is so intense that it is known as “the Mount Everest of psychedelics.” Some hardcore psychonauts take ibogaine for “psycho-spiritual” purposes, but most only subject themselves to it...

The Voices of Palestine’s Oppressed and Colonised Speak Out in Zaya & Maurizio Benazzo’s ‘Where Olive Trees Weep’
Image
Initially conceived as part of a larger series covering the worldwide intergenerational trauma of colonisation, Where Olive Trees Weep, a feature documentary from Zaya and Maurizio Benazzo, offers a window into the continuing struggles of the Palestinian people living under Israeli occupation through a series of interviews with residents of the West Bank. Footage for the film was captured over three weeks, between May and June 2022, and was supposed to be the last episode in their series in which audiences could track different phases of colonial projects repeating themselves over the past few centuries. However, after filming 12 international locations in 18 months, it was immediately obvious to both Zaya and Maurizio that these films were each meant to be larger explorations of their own. Where Olive Trees Weep soon became a priority in the series and is now the first to be released as the filmmakers realised they couldn’t (morally...

Image
Update: More than 300 Jewish creatives — including eight-time Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken, “SNL” star Sarah Sherman, actor and documentarian Alex Winter and “Seinfeld” writer Larry Charles — have added their names to the list of signatories of an open letter in support of Jonathan Glazer’s Oscars speech.

The number of signees now sits at 492, having more than tripled since Variety first published the April 5 letter, which criticized the attacks on Glazer for being a “dangerous distraction” from the mounting death toll in Gaza while also contributing to the “suppression of free speech and dissent.”

New additions also include Oscar-winning “Anatomy of a Fall” co-writer Arthur Harari, veteran U.K. producer and Oscar winner Jeremy Thomas, “Girls” co-showrunner and co-writer Jenni Konner and “The Hunger Games” writer and director and four-time Oscar nominee Gary Ross. Many members of the Israeli film community have also signed the open letter, including Oren Moverman, Nadav Lapid,...

In a livestreamed interview with physician Gabor Maté, Harry said: “I would say it is one of the fundamental parts of my life that changed me and helped me deal with the traumas and the pains of the past.”

King Charles III's coronation has arrived, and after months of speculation, Prince Harry has made a return to the UK for the event - without his wife, Meghan Markle, by his side. Harry was seen entering Westminster Abbey on Saturday morning solo, walking alongside his cousins Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie. He was seated in the third row for the May 6 formal ceremony.

Back on April 12, Variety reported that the king's communications team issued a statement that read, "Buckingham Palace is pleased to confirm that The Duke of Sussex will attend the Coronation Service at Westminster Abbey on May 6th. The Duchess of Sussex will remain in California with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet." Additionally, a source told People that Harry would attend the event because he wants to support his father's important milestone. However, he's not expected to appear at other outings aside from the crowning ceremony.

Prince Harry Facing Questions Surrounding U.S. Visa After Admitting To Using Drugs
Image
Prince Harry has made some bombshell revelations in his recent interviews and 2023 autobiography, Spare. The most recent to come under scrutiny is his admission to having experimented with illicit drugs, such as cocaine and magic mushrooms, which has raised questions about whether he declared his past substance use when applying for residency, and why it has not impacted his ability to obtain a U.S. visa.

The Heritage Foundation’s Oversight Project has submitted a request for Prince Harry’s visa documents under the Freedom of Information Act. Experts believe that if the Heritage Foundation’s investigation finds the Duke of Sussex to have lied on his application, he could have his visa revoked and could face deportation.

Courteney Cox Reacts to Prince Harry's Mushrooms Claim: "I Definitely Wasn't Passing Them Out"
Image
Courteney Cox may not have read Prince Harry's "Spare" memoir yet, but she definitely got wind of his mushrooms confession. In the book, which hit bookshelves on Jan. 10, the Duke of Sussex recalls trying the psychedelics at a party at the "Friends" star's house after finding "a huge box of black diamond mushroom chocolates" in her fridge.

"Somebody behind me said they were for everybody. 'Help yourself, boys,'" Harry writes in his book. "My mate and I grabbed several, gobbled them, washed them down with tequila."

Speaking to Variety in an interview published on Feb. 27, the 58-year-old actor finally addressed Harry's claims, saying, "He did stay here for a couple of days - probably two or three. He's a really nice person."

Cox added: "I haven't read the book. I do want to hear it because I've heard it's really entertaining. But yes, it's gotten back to me about it.
