'Adult Swim's Yule Log 2' Director Explains the Horror Hallmark Movie Mashup
Image
Back in 2022, Adult Swim aired what many at first believed to be a standard yule log program, whereby a camera remains fixed on a roaring fire meant to evoke the coziness of the holidays. But as the log burned on, it became clear that not everything was at it seemed, and a full-on horror movie soon overtook the airwaves. And then things got even weirder. The clever surprise was a real holiday treat for horror fans, who appreciated the surreal and absurdist nature of the film.

Now, the same creative mind behind the first Adult Swim Yule Log movie and some of the same actors are back for a sequel, Adult Swim Yule Log 2: Branchin' Out, and this time, the murderous flaming log infiltrates Hallmark-style Christmas movies, creating a genre mashup horror fans didn't know they needed.

Writer-director Casper Kelly, who also worked on the experimental Adult Swim short...

Catherine Corcoran, Justin Miles, Doug Jones, Dee Wallace & Krsy Fox Board Matthew Hersh Horror ‘If It Bleeds’
Image
Exclusive: Catherine Corcoran, Justin Miles, Doug Jones, Dee Wallace and Krsy Fox are starring in If it Bleeds, an indie horror pic from first-time director Matthew Hersh.

The film has been quietly filming and is nearing completion, billed as an “anthology-style crime thriller” from Hersh, whose Night of the Missing with director Samuel Gonzalez Jr is currently topping the Cineverse streaming platform Screambox after launch in December.

In If if Bleeds, genre actor Corcoran as young and ambitious news reporter Diane Winters and her cameraman Simon, played by Miles, as they uncover a mysterious series of gruesome murders that unfold throughout the course of a chaotic and violent day. As events unfold, the duo become players in a sinister situation even more menacing than either one could have imagined.

Horror icons Jones and Wallace will also star, the former as a plastic surgeon, as will actor and musician Fox. Wallace and Fox are consulting producers.

Allison Victoria-Wolfe and Doug Hawley are among the producers, with Gonzalez Jr. directing an additional segment.

”To have so many genre greats believe in me and trust me with the story I wanted to tell with this film at such an early stage of my career was truly surreal,” said Hersh. “I figured what better way to dive into the horror genre than through the eyes of a news reporter in the field seeing and facing the horrors of humanity unfold in front of her very own eyes.”

“Ever a champion of independent filmmakers, I was thrilled when Matthew invited me to come along on this next phase of his creative journey,” added Corcoran Diane’s story is universal in that we all have the need to be seen and valued, and I can’t wait for the world to see how our incredible cast and crew bring that theme to life.”

“Getting to play a quirky cosmetic surgeon was a treat enough for me,” said Jones. “But under Mathew Hersh’s careful direction and witty writing, that treat was sweetened all the more. Add to that the professional, efficient crew, the joy of acting opposite the thoughtful and hilarious Krsy Fox, and this filming experience was dang near perfect.”...

Old Dads Review
Image
Plot: Three best friends become fathers later in life and find themselves battling preschool principals, millennial CEOs and anything created after 1987.

Review: If you are a fan of Bill Burr’s stand-up comedy, you likely know what you are in for with Old Dads. Burr’s directorial debut is an amalgam of his observations and rants from his twenty-plus years as a comedian told through the fictional story of a trio of fifty-year-olds dealing with generational change. On the heels of a year that has seen semi-autobiographical films starring comedians like Burt Kreischer and Sebastian Maniscalco and the series Bupkis with Pete Davidson, Old Dads is a fictional story that relies heavily on Burr’s sense of humor. But, instead of capitalizing on Burr’s red-hot temper as a source of constant comedy, Old Dads is a relatively traditional movie that tries to tell several different kinds of stories without...

‘Old Dads’ Review: Bill Burr & Friends Scream, Yell And Curse Through A Way-Over-The-Top Netflix Comedy
Image
Three fiftysomething jerks extend their adolescence way, way beyond the breaking point in Old Dads, a boorish and obnoxiously vulgar comedy that, since it can’t claim any other great distinction, might well have been expressly written to break the all-time record for use of the f-word in the major studio movie. Even Lenny Bruce might be twitching in his grave over this one.

All the same, director/co-writer Bill Burr has more often than not had his finger on the pulse of the populace, so this slap-dash-feeling Netflix offering likely will prove a solid audience-pleaser.

There certainly have been plenty of comedies featuring guys who put off behaving like adults for as long as they can; perhaps The Odd Couple still stands as the quintessential example of this subgenre whose roots go pretty deep. In this case, the three buds behave as if they should be enrolled, not in grade school,...

Old Dads, Bill Burr's Directorial Debut Film, Sets Netflix Premiere Date
Image
In a recent announcement, the streaming giant Netflix has secured the rights to the already-finished film Old Dads, starring and directed by The Mandalorian actor Bill Burr.

The movie marks the directorial debut of the award-winning comedian, as he also takes on writing duties alongside Ben Tishler, who has previously worked in the 2001 film, Heist. Burr's collaboration with Netflix is far from his first, having notably contributed to and appeared in the adult animated sitcom F is for Family, a five-season hit. Moreover, he has also done a number of well-received stand-up specials, with the most recent being Bill Burr: Live at the Red Rocks. Burr's film credits also include Dog, The Opening Act, The King of Staten Island, The Front Runner, Daddy’s Home, Black or White, The Heat, Stand Up Guys, and Date Night.

2023 Emmy nominations ballot: See all 61 Best TV Movie contenders from ‘Adult Swim Yule Log’ to ‘White Men Can’t Jump’
Image
The made-for-tv movie was a programming staple for the broadcast networks in the 1970s and 1980s. While it fell out of favor in the 1990s and was even dropped as an Emmy Awards category for three years beginning in 2011, it has been on an upswing as of late. This year, a whopping 61 telefilms are in contention for the five nominations that will be revealed on July 12. Last year, there were only 48 options, compared to 41 in 2021 and 28 in 2020.

All 20,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 26 to cast their 2023 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for their favorite TV movies. A new rule change will require each voter to make no more than five selections in this category, whereas there was previously no limit. As opposed to the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.

Just like on the limited series ballot,...

How Adult Swim Made Insane Horror Movie ‘Yule Log’ Without Warner Bros. Discovery Finding Out
Image
Editor’s note: This article includes mild spoilers for “Adult Swim Yule Log.”

All due respect to James Cameron and his underwater actors in “Avatar: The Way of Water,” but you can’t beat the filmmaking gamble of Casper Kelly’s “Adult Swim Yule Log.” Adult Swim’s first feature-length live action endeavor dropped without warning December 11 after the season finale of “Ricky and Morty”: A cozy two-minute yule log video morphs into a disturbing home invasion horror movie that becomes a supernatural cabin-in-the-woods thriller with a young couple (Justin Miles and Andrea Laing) who may be at the mercy of a haunted fireplace.

And then things get really weird, with everything from time travel to UFOs figuring into an unclassifiable odyssey. “My dream has been making movies,” Kelly told IndieWire over Zoom this week. “I thought now that I’ve got one, I’m going to put in everything I can.

They're often released to channel viewers in the dead of night, with almost no marketing. However, a few of them slip through to the masses by means of viral success. Casper Kelly,...

It’s two minutes before Adult Swim’s holiday yule log presentation finally shows its hand, breaks free of its defining formula, and begins to first hint that something bigger and more sinister than a seasonal celebration is afoot. A yule log video is a holiday tradition that’s supposed to provide its audience comfort through warm, continuous, predictable images. The Fireplace, alternatively, is the complete antithesis of this tradition as it unsettles and surprises the viewer through every single minute–yet, inexplicably, also still succeeds as a functional yule log video. This stealth feature film functions as a cornucopia of horror genre tropes that plays out like an ultra-stylized Dadaist Cabin in the Woods filtered through Adult Swim sensibilities.

The She-Hulk Finale Features Cameos From The Show's Actual Writers
Image
That's my secret, Cap. I'm always warning readers about major spoilers for "She-Hulk: Attorney At Law" to follow.

Well, it's safe to say nobody expected all that from the season finale of "She-Hulk." Just when it seemed like yet another installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was destined for a safe, familiar, and narratively unsatisfying conclusion, the latest chapter in the life of attorney by day, She-Hulk by night Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) abruptly zigged when even the biggest comic book fans may have anticipated it to zag.

In-between important bricklaying for the wider universe and casual allusions to the state of the MCU these days, the series writers always made sure to include countless moments where they could show off their own unique sense of humor. As of this last and most formula-shattering episode of "She-Hulk" yet, however, the writing team decided to take things in the most surreal and meta direction possible.

The Disney-owned network has ordered ten episodes of the series, which is written by The Conners’ Simone Finch, after piloting the project.

Single Drunk Female follows irreverent alcoholic Samantha Fink, who, after a spectacularly embarrassing public breakdown, is forced to move back home with her “Smother” to sober up and avoid jail time. But when her childhood Bff reveals surprising news, Samantha realizes she can no longer qualify as a party girl—she’s a walking disaster.

“St. Agatha” Is A Chilling Experience
When a horror film subverts your expectations, that’s almost always a recipe for success. One would be easily forgiven for assuming that St. Agatha would traffic in the same sort of territory as last year’s awful The Nun. Instead, while still thoroughly being a fright flick, this effort goes in a whole other direction. It gets pretty ridiculous towards the end, but for large swarths of the picture, it focuses on something grittier, more intense, and much more based in reality. By no stretch is this one of the genre’s best efforts, but it does way more right than it does wrong. The movie is a horror experience, tinged with religious extremism, or so it seems. Taking place in a small Georgia town during the 1950’s, we follow a pregnant con woman on the run named Mary (Sabrina Kern). Seeking refuge, she ends up in a convent...

The Gates: Star Frank Grillo Hears TV Show's Cancelled
While a second season on ABC seems like a real long shot, ABC hasn't officially cancelled The Gates (unlike say, My Generation). One of the show's stars however has been told that there won't be a second season.

The Gates follows a Chicago police detective (Frank Grillo) who moves his family to a gated suburban community to become the neighborhood's security chief. They soon discover that their new neighbors aren't as normal as they appear to be. The large cast includes Andrea Powell, Rhona Mitra, Marisol Nichols, Luke Mably, Travis Caldwell, Skyler Samuels, Chandra West, Colton Haynes, Janina Gavankar, Justin Miles, Victoria Gabrielle Platt, James Preston, Georgia Cole, Johnny Messner, Brett Cullen, Shannon Lucio, Devyn A. Tyler, McKaley Miller, and Louis Herthum.

Ratings expectations are lower in the summer months but the suburban supernatural series averaged only a 0.9 rating in the all-important 18-49...

The Gates: New Supernatural Drama on ABC; Cancel or Keep It?
Though ABC didn't have much luck with their Eastwick drama, the network is trying another kind of supernatural series, The Gates, for the summer months. Will this one make it to season two?

The Gates revolves around a big city cop who moves his family to a quiet gated community where many of the residents aren't exactly what they appear to be. The ensemble cast includes Rhona Mitra, Colton Haynes, Frank Grillo, Janina Gavankar, Chandra West, Luke Mably, James Preston, Marisol Nichols, Skyler Samuels, Travis Caldwell, Victoria Platt, and Justin Miles.

The series debuted on Sunday, June 20th, to an unimpressive 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and just 4.78 million viewers. Considering all of the network's promotion, this was a disappointing start. The premiere ranked first in the demo and second in total viewers for the timeslot.

TV Review: Promising Supernatural Thrills of ABC’s ‘The Gates’
Chicago – After years of simply giving up to cable networks like AMC, USA, and TNT, the broadcast networks are trying to reclaim summer viewers; none more aggressively than ABC with three new shows debuting this week — “Scoundrels,” “The Gates,” and “Rookie Blue.” We’ve covered the first dramedy and will get to the cop show later this week but now is the time to break down the supernatural thriller in the middle that stands as the best of the three.

TV Rating: 3.5/5.0

“The Gates” is a blend of the hit ABC soap opera “Desperate Housewives” and the country’s obsession with all things vampire from “Twilight” to “True Blood.” At its best, the show recalls a much earlier cult hit with a twist: The legendary “Twin Peaks.” At its worst, it feels like the countless copycats that followed David Lynch’s hit show.

Eight Summer Shows Without Gays That You Should Watch Anyway
Just weeks ago, AfterElton’s Great Gay brought us some prime choices for gay-themed summer programming for when it's too hot to go outside. You know, television to tide us over until Glee, Brothers & Sisters and Paula’s Best Dishes return in the fall.

Don’t judge me for that last one.

But believe it or not, there are some summer shows sans homo that are also worth watching.

Take a minute to let that sink in. I was shocked, too.

Here are eight possibilities – some suggested by readers like yourself, because you do have fine taste after all. And, to ensure your viewing pleasure is the best possible experience, I’ll let you know the quality of the program (Aka how hot the male leads are as well as the quality of the actual show) on a scale of one to five hot summer lifeguards.

Grab your remotes and let’s get started!

Elsewhere, Marisol Nichols and Rhona Mitra have boarded ABC's series "The Gates" as leads, with Victoria Platt, Justin Miles and Skyler Samuels also cast in the project.

The Bays/Thomas multicamera comedy revolves around an unmarried couple, Tommy (Bornheimer) and Gina (Sloane), who are in love, but Tommy has commitment issues. Gina is a waitress who fantasizes about running her own business.

Sloane, repped by Gersh and Thruline, is onscreen with Bornheimer in "She's Out of My League."
