Luis Canau works in the Portuguese animation industry since the end of the 1990s, performing several technical roles, from scanning and ink and paint in a traditional 2D animation production to the supervision of a Toon Boom Harmony network and workflow. Since 2008, he works mainly as compositing artist, editor, and technical director in animation.
Canau worked on the TV series Angelitos (2002), a Portuguese/Brazilian co-production, and a vast array of art-house short films, such as João Fazenda's Sem Querer (2011) and Pedro Brito's Fado Do Homem Crescido (2012), selected, respectively, for the Annecy and Clermont-Ferrand film festivals. More recently, he worked on the cut-out animation series Histórias do Lucas (2015) and on the short films by Sara Barbas, Final Call (2016), and Catarina Sobral, Razão entre Dois Volumes (2018). In 2024, he directed his first short film, Ups! (2024), with Galvão Bertazzi.
