Vampire Weekend Perform “Salute to Indie” Covers Medley at Just Like Heaven: Watch
Image
Vampire Weekend’s headlining set at this weekend’s Just Like Heaven festival included a five-song “salute to indie” medley featuring covers of Tame Impala, Phoenix, TV on the Radio, Beach House, and Grizzly Bear.

As they often do these days, the band carved out part of the climactic stretch of their set for some well-chosen covers. Since the festival is itself is a dedication to indie rock circa 2000 to, say, 2015, Vampire Weekend decided to dust off a few renditions of songs by their peers.

They kicked off the covers section with a rendition of Phoenix’s “Lisztomania,” a fitting choice, as frontman Ezra Koenig guested with Phoenix at last year’s Just Like Heaven to perform their collaborative song “Tonight” as well as the fellow indie staple, “1901.”

Before playing the next song, Koenig mentioned to the crowd that, “A friend of mine said that...

Vampire Weekend Give a ‘Salute to Indie’ With Covers of Phoenix, TV on the Radio, More
Image
Vampire Weekend headlined Pasadena festival Just Like Heaven last night, and along with delivering their own songs, they dedicated a portion of their set to give a “salute to indie.”

The band have recently been taking crowd requests for snippets of covers. This time, they handpicked the groups and songs they decided to perform brief covers of during their set. They started with Phoenix, who played the fest last year, and delivered their song “Lisztomania.”

“Now a friend of mine said that Tame Impala’s not an indie band. He said they were psychedelic rock,...

Trey Anastasio Lost His Mind Watching Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl Halftime Show
Image
It’s been almost a week since Kendrick Lamar’s masterful Super Bowl halftime show, and many are still singing its praises, like Trey Anastasio, who raved about the performance in a new interview this week.

“When I saw Kendrick the other night, I was losing my mind,” Anastasio told GQ. “I thought, ‘This is the deepest thing I’ve ever seen at a Super Bowl.’”

Get Kendrick Lamar Tickets Here

The comment came in the context of Anastasio describing his own band, Phish, as “not a very surface band,” which sometimes calls for listeners to dig into the material a little bit before they start to understand the magic. Caveating that he makes “this comparison without even a drop of quality comparison,” Anastasio likened it to Kendrick’s performance.

“I watched it three times, and I still couldn’t pick up on all the messages he was conveying,” he said.

Rashida Jones Reflects on Teenage Beef with Tupac Shakur: “It Just Felt Like a Completely Unwarranted Attack”
Image
Rashida Jones revisited her mid ’90s beef with Tupac Shakur in a new interview with The New Yorker, explaining how her point of view has changed over time.

The actress and filmmaker reflected on her quarrel with the rapper, which happened when Jones was a teenager. It all began when Shakur made disparaging comments about her father, legendary producer Quincy Jones, in an interview with The Source in 1993 when Rashida Jones was 17. “All he does is stick his dick in white bitches and make fucked up kids,” Shakur notably said.

Jones then responded, writing a fiery open letter to Shakur: “Because I am the youngest of Quincy Jones’ six daughters, I cannot view this article or this man without bias,” the letter reads, “But I do think that anyone who reads this article would be shocked by his ignorance and lack of respect for his people.” She continued by alleging...

Vampire Weekend’s ‘Only God Was Above Us’ Is a Harsh Beautiful Record For a Harsh Beautiful World
Image
Vampire Weekend’s recordings have frequently been characterized by a kind of tidiness, a clean fusion of Ezra Koenig’s pop songwriting smarts and the group’s instrumental economy. The band’s new album Only God Was Above Us offers something different, pivoting away from the brighter, jammier aspects of 2019’s Father of the Bride with a decided bent toward experimentation and surprising, often harsh, new textures. The results showcase a band that, nearly two decades in, is willing to issue a challenge to its fans and produce a soundtrack...

Vampire Weekend Only God Was Above Us Review: A Blast from the Past
Image
While Vampire Weekend’s prep-school narratives have toyed with subcultural statements and big ideas about youth and love, singer and chief songwriter Ezra Koenig never seems to be revealing much about himself. That admittedly could make the sweeping emotions that the group’s songs tried to invoke feel trapped behind glass, even on a work of pop craftsmanship as stunning as 2013’s Modern Vampires of the City.

Vampire Weekend’s first album in five years and their first with (most of) their original lineup in more than a decade, Only God Was Above Us doesn’t tell us a whole lot more about the interior lives of Koenig, bassist Chris Baio, or drummer Chris Tomson. What it lacks in confessionals, though, it makes up for with a sharp conceit: a Cold War allegory about romance, contrasting references to conflict in Eastern Europe and Russia with domestic issues and memories.

In mounting this framework,...

Vampire Weekend Release New Single “Mary Boone”: Stream
Image
Vampire Weekend are back with “Mary Boone,” the latest single from their forthcoming album Only God Was Above Us.

“Mary Boone” features angelic choirs and lush orchestrations, a drum loop sampled from Soul II Soul’s “Back to Life (However Do You Want Me),” and kaleidoscopic synths that drop in at each wordless chorus. The song’s title refers to the art dealer and collector who became well-known in the New York City art scene during the 1980s.

Vampire Weekend frontman Ezra Koenig narrates a scene in which a new inhabitant of the city seeks work under Mary Boone, and later expands the subject to include themes of love lost and change. The song’s official visualizer features the rapper Despot as he drives from New Jersey to New York City through the Lincoln Tunnel. Watch the visual below.

Vampire Weekend Tease “Punky,” “Jammy” Side Project
Image
Vampire Weekend have played around with a slightly “punky,” slightly “jammy”side project in their free time, band members Ezra Koenig, Chris Tomson, and Chris Baio told the New York Times.

According to Tomson, the extra-curriculars began as a way to blow off steam during the pandemic. “The world had stopped working and a lot of what we normally do was just not being done,” Tomson recalled. “There was something about just playing with no expectation — to just play with my two very close friends without an agenda.”

Baio added, “It’s very rare for people in a band of our size to be alone together. No engineer, no tour manager, nothing like that. It felt like being at the outset of the band again. And we did that for three years and change, whenever we were all in town.”

And Koenig has even embellished...

Vampire Weekend Give Upbeat History Lesson About Cruelty Through the Ages on New Song ‘Classical’
Image
Vampire Weekend make sense of how historical examples of cruelty have become “classical” with time on an upbeat new song, “Classical.” The song comes off their upcoming album Only God Was Above Us, due out April 5.

Between frontman Ezra Koenig’s catchy, squeaky guitar melody and Henry Solomon’s wild saxophone solo, Koenig sings about war, peace, and abandoned ruins of temples, describing history as “a bleak sunrise.” The music sort of falls apart at the end, on purpose.

The video, directed by Nick Harwood, leans on the past by...

Built from a rustling acoustic guitar line and a cymbal-heavy drum beat from Chris Tomson, “Classical” is more vibrant and restless than Vampire Weekend’s prior singles. “Untrue, unkind, and unnatural/ How the cruel, with time, becomes classical,” Ezra Koenig sings in the pre-chorus, eventually landing on an anthemic, harmony-laden refrain where he asks “Which classical remains?” The song also features a daring, slightly dissonant bridge with a haywire sax solo courtesy of Henry Solomon.

The song also arrives with a music video directed by longtime collaborator Nick Harwood and featuring the band, Ray Suen, drum tech Josh Goldsmith, and A-list producer Ariel Rechtshaid. Throughout the green screen-heavy video, Vampire Weekend performs “Classical” amidst clips of classical European architecture — columns, gothic churches, statues, 800 year-old paintings, and even Stonehenge.

Vampire Weekend are teasing their new album, Only God Was Above Us, with a 30-second clip of a noisy yet upbeat guitar cacophony skating over some funky bass and drums. The clip for the album, due out April 5, shows a man jumping through an old New York City subway car sideways, a French horn, a recording studio, the World Trade Center, and sheet music with the word “Hope,” among other images. “Hope” is the title of the final track on the album, and its lyrics contain the words, “I hope...

Vampire Weekend Announce New Album Only God Was Above Us
Image
Vampire Weekend are officially back with the announcement of their new album, Only God Was Above Us, out April 5th via Columbia Records.

Marking Vampire Weekend’s first full-length in five years, Only God Was Above Us clocks in at 10 tracks. Inspired by 20th-century New York City, the album was recorded in Manhattan, Los Angeles, London, and Tokyo, with vocalist/guitarist Ezra Koenig sharing production duties with longtime collaborator Ariel Rechtshaid. It was mixed by Dave Fridmann and mastered by Emily Lazar.

Koenig penned the majority of the lyrics to Only God Was Above Us in 2019-2020, and spent the next five years with bandmates Chris Baio and Chris Tomson fleshing out the lyrical and melodic structures. The album is described in a press release as “direct yet complex, showing the band at once at its grittiest, and also at its most beautiful and melodic.”

The album’s title comes from the cover artwork,...

Pusha T (?!) Joins Phoenix for “All Eyes on Me” Remix: Stream
Image
Phoenix are keeping their collaboration kick going with a remix of their Alpha Zulu cut “All Eyes on Me” that features unlikely guest Pusha T. Check out the track below.

In addition to Pusha’s verses, the “All Eyes on Me” remix features vocals from Benee and production from Chad Hugo. The band shared their emphatic (and very French) gratitude in a press release: “A huge thank you to le Roi Pusha-t — most played artist in our backstage; to Chad Hugo, who always showed up when we were playing in Virginia, it’s about time we worked together! And to Benee, who worked at light speed to make this happen and added some magic. Merci!!!”

As random of a team-up as it may seem, it is fun to hear Pusha spit over Phoenix’s disco-punk instrumental, before Benne closes out the song with a mellow final verse. The track comes...

Kirsten Dunst Busts a Move to Maya Rudolph’s Band Princess at Chanel and Sofia Coppola’s ‘Archive’ Party
Image
Sofia Coppola took a seat at New York’s Bookmarc on Sunday to sign copies of her first book, Sofia Coppola Archive: 1999-2023. The event inspired hundreds to hit the sidewalk and queue up for hours in a line that snaked through the West Village streets while fans waited for their chance to meet the filmmaker and snag an autograph. “It was so nice to meet so many young kids that were all dressed up and excited,” Coppola told The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday night, moments after she arrived to a different kind of scene at L.A.’s Chateau Marmont.

There were plenty of youthful attendees, albeit more famous, a frenzy for Archive and everyone was fashionably suited courtesy of Chanel, which hosted the event to celebrate Coppola’s new tome and toast their longtime ambassador, collaborator and friend. But the only line that formed was the one...

Vampire Weekend Reveal Their Raga-Inspired New Album Is “Close to Done”
Image
Vampire Weekend have revealed they are adding raga singing into their repertoire on their new album. Better yet, the New York indie rockers also promised the project is “close to done.”

In a newsletter (via Vulture) accompanying the first volume of their new vinyl series, drummer Chris Tomson gave fans the lay of the land, saying lead singer Ezra Koenig “took a raga singing lesson with Terry Riley in rural Japan and wrote what he considers to be 7 of his all-time top 10 best songs.” Whether or not the band is replacing guitars with sitars is currently unknown.

Tomson went on to describe being able to “connect, jawbone, and jam” with his bandmates without any responsibilities and compared it to their formation at Columbia University. “I personally found an immense peace and pleasure from creating with the guys like we had in the Ruggles days,” he wrote. “The vibe was strong.

Vampire Weekend Release Live Album Frog on the Bass Drum Vol. 01 on Vinyl
Image
Vampire Weekend have released a vinyl-only live album called Frog on the Bass Drum Vol. 01, which pulls audio from a June 2019 show in Indianapolis where there was, in fact, a frog pictured on their bass drum.

The setlist from the show featured songs from all four albums of their discography — 2008’s self-titled debut, Contra, Modern Vampires of the City, and Father of the Bride — plus the official release of a 10-minute long cover of Bob Dylan’s Infidels track “Jokerman.” To boot, vocalist Ezra Koenig dropped a quick flow from “Pizza Party,” the debut track from L’Homme Run, the college rap group he formed with Vampire Weekend drummer Chris Tomson.

Frog on the Bass Drum Vol. 01 also comes with the band’s Quarterly Report newsletter. See the artwork and tracklist below.

2,500 copies of the LP were pressed by the vinyl’s manufacturer, Jack White’s Third Man Pressing in Detroit,...

Phoenix Recruit Clairo for “After Midnight” Remix: Stream
Image
Phoenix have shared their second-ever formal collaboration today, recruiting Clairo for a remix of “After Midnight,” a standout track from the band’s recent album Alpha Zulu.

Though the two artists are longtime fans of each other, it took a few connections before they finally crossed paths: Phoenix met Clairo through Rostam Batmanglij, who produced the indie pop star’s debut album Immunity and whose former Vampire Weekend bandmate Ezra Koenig contributed vocals to the Alpha Zulu single “Tonight” (which we named Song of the Week).

“We’ve loved Claire since day one!” Phoenix share in a press release. “What a treat it is to have her sing with us! We hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we do.” Clairo adds: “I’ve been a massive fan of Phoenix for as long as I can remember, and I’m very grateful that they asked me to sing on this remix.

Christine McVie: 6 Fleetwood Mac tracks written by late singer-songwriter
Image
Christine McVie, a long-time member of Fleetwood Mac, has died at age 79.

According to a statement from her family, released on Wednesday (30 November), she died of a short illness in hospital.

They added: “We would like everyone to keep Christine in their hearts and remember the life of an incredible human being, and revered musician who was loved universally.”

Fans and fellow musicians, including McVie’s bandmate Stevie Nicks, have paid tribute.

After joining Fleetwood Mac in 1970, McVie went on to write some of the band’s most recognisable and commercially successful songs.

Here are six essential Christine McVie-penned tracks to listen to in tribute.

Come a Little Bit Closer (1974)

Album: Heroes Are Hard to Find

Featured on the group’s ninth studio album, Heroes Are Hard to Find (1974), is McVie’s “Come a Little Bit Closer”.

There’s little information regarding the actual song, but the album itself marked...

Phoenix review, Alpha Zulu: Zut alors, it’s good!
Image
“Woo-ha! Singing Ha-lle-lu-jah!” yelps Thomas Mars on the title track of Phoenix’s seventh album, Alpha Zulu. The tensely sprung indie-pop groove was apparently inspired by a bout of airplane turbulence – during which Mars heard the pilot repeating the words “alpha zulu”. And the twitchy-twang of the song brilliantly captures the strange sensation of exhilaration-anxiety you get on a bumpy flight: a stomach-dropper of a bass line, glitchy exhalations from the keyboard, and the sweet thermals of vocal melody. Meanwhile, Mars blurts out surreal and surrendering lines: “Pray to your God/ Cover your lies… There’s a purple cloud in the consommé, ouais!… Why choose your body over time?”

The album – like the song – is packed with an impressive amount of energy and ideas for a band celebrating their 25th anniversary. From the rubbery bounce of Ezra Koenig collaboration “Tonight” through the shimmering pulse of “Winter Solstice”, to the moody...

Image
Phoenix continued to preview their upcoming new album Alpha Zulu Thursday with the video for the LP’s icy latest single, “Winter Solstice.”

Recorded over separate continents, Phoenix’s Lauren Brancowitz, Christian Mazzalai, and Deck D’Arcy built the loop for the track, which they sent over to singer Thomas Mars to build out. “Winter Solstice” marks...
