Pedro Pascal Confesses That He’s Never Seen This Julia Roberts 1999 Classic That Has An 84% Score
Image
Pedro Pascal is famous for his wit, unusual media savviness, and effortless charm. So, when he recently confessed he’s never watched one of the most legendary rom-coms of all time, fans were left shocked. During a promo game for his upcoming movie Materialists, the Game of Thrones fame admitted that he’s never seen Notting Hill, the 1999 hit rom-com starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant.

The rather shocking revelation came during a BuzzFeed-style game named “Guess the Romance Movie Line”, where Pascal joined co-stars Chris Evans in Dakota Johnson to identify popular movie quotes from classic love stories. When Chris Evans recited the iconic Notting Hill line, Pascal immediately recognized it, followed by the admission that he’s only seen a clip, not the full film.

26 Years Later, Florence Pugh Re-Enacts A Famous Julia Roberts Scene (& Rom-Com Fans Will Lose Their Minds)
Image
Florence Pugh recently re-enacted one of Julia Roberts' most famous romantic comedy scenes of all time. The Notting Hill recreation occurred during the press junket for her latest Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, Thunderbolts*.

Jake Schreier, the director of Thunderbolts*, took the opportunity to recreate the scene in Notting Hill where Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) is talking with Will Thacker (Hugh Grant) about her upcoming movie. "I’m a dork and don’t do junkets very often, so I asked [Florence Pugh to] re-create Notting Hill with me on Thunderbolts* press day," Schreier captioned the video on Instagram. "If Lewis/Sebastian/Wyatt/David hadn’t all left for the day, she would have had a better co-star."

The original scene from Notting Hill sees Roberts' character inviting Grant's character to visit her at the Ritz Hotel, where he is mistaken for a reporter and taken to a press event for her new film. There,...

Julia Roberts Rejecting A Sequel To Her $363 Million Rom-Com Saved A '90s Classic From Certain Disaster
Image
Julia Roberts became rom-com royalty in the 1990s after starring in some of the best movies of the decade, and she saved her reputation by turning down a sequel to one of her most popular rom-coms. Julia Roberts’ career began in 1987 with an uncredited role in the direct-to-video movie Firehouse. Roberts’ big break arrived the following year when she played Daisy in the rom-com drama Mystic Pizza, and the following year she played Shelby in the drama Steel Magnolias, for which she got her first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

In the 1990s, Roberts explored different genres, such as sci-fi with Flatliners, thriller with Sleeping with the Enemy, and fantasy with Hook. However, Roberts’ strength in the 1990s was rom-coms, starring in Pretty Woman, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Notting Hill, and Runaway Bride. All of these earned a spot in pop culture and rom-com history and none of them got a sequel,...

Julia Roberts Once Turned Down A ‘Notting Hill’ Mini-Sequel Due To Script’s Divorce Plot – Report
Image
Notting Hill screenwriter Richard Curtis has, in the past, reunited the cast of Love Actually for short British TV films to benefit the annual Red Nose Day charity. But nothing with Notting, and not for lack of trying.

The screenwriter says in a new interview with IndieWire that Notting Hill star Julie Roberts nixed a potential reunion when she learned that the “mini sequel” would have her Anna Scott character divorcing Hugh Grant’s William Thacker.

Though Curtis says even he is not interested in full-length sequels to the films – “I actually did four Red Nose Days and Comic Relief,” he says. “We did those mini sequels to Love Actually and those satisfied me” – a mini-Notting Hill reunion had been discussed.

“I tried doing one with Notting Hill,” he says in the interview, “where they were going to get divorced and Julia [Roberts] thought that was a very poor idea.

‘Notting Hill’ Writer Richard Curtis Reveals Why Julia Roberts Turned Down Sequel
Image
A Notting Hill sequel never made it to the big screen due, in part, to Julia Roberts, according to screenwriter Richard Curtis.

The writer for the beloved 1999 rom-com recently told IndieWire while promoting his new Netflix animated film, That Christmas, that Roberts wasn’t a big fan of the sequel script, which saw her character Anna Scott divorcing Hugh Grant’s character William Thacker.

When Curtis was asked if he would like to do any follow-ups to his past films, he said, “I don’t think so. I actually did four Red Nose Days and Comic Relief. We did those mini sequels to Love Actually, and those satisfied me.” The screenwriter previously reunited the Love Actually cast for a short film that benefits the annual charity event.

Curtis added, “I tried doing one with Notting Hill where they were going to get divorced, and Julia [Roberts] thought that was a very poor idea.

Julia Roberts Turned Down 'Notting Hill' Sequel Over a Divorce Plot
Image
Listen, sometimes even the best writers have a bad idea now and again. And, we're sorry, but: trying to divorce the couple at the heart of Notting Hill definitely feels like a bad idea to us. Even if it came from the mind of the writer of the film, Richard Curtis, himself. Thankfully, the potential sequel storyline was so abhorrent an idea to the movie's star, Julia Roberts, that she passed on making a mini-sequel to the film.

In a new interview with IndieWire, the acclaimed writer of such romantic comedy classics as Love Actually, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Bridget Jones's Diary, and About Time, revealed that he hoped to do a sequel to Notting Hill for Red Nose Day, but Roberts shot the idea down.

Julia Roberts Turned Down a ‘Notting Hill’ Reunion Due to a Divorce Plot, Says Writer Richard Curtis
Image
“Notting Hill” screenwriter Richard Curtis is detailing why there hasn’t been a sequel: And it turns out Julia Roberts part of the reason why.

Curtis told IndieWire while promoting his upcoming Netflix animated film “That Christmas,” which premieres December 4, that he wanted to do a “mini sequel” to the beloved 1999 rom-com as part of Red Nose Day. However, Roberts had issues with the script idea, which involved her A-list actress character Anna Scott divorcing bookstore owner William Thacker, played by Curtis’ longtime collaborator Hugh Grant.

Curtis previously has reunited the cast of his feature “Love Actually” for short film follow-ups that benefit the annual charity event.

When asked if Curtis would want to revisit any of his past films in a formal feature sequel form, he said, “I don’t think so. I actually did four Red Nose Days and Comic Relief. We did those mini sequels to ‘Love Actually’ and those satisfied me.

Notting Hill Is a Great British Rom-Com, and Now It's Streaming
Image
Notting Hill paces its romance well, making the storyline believable and delightful, unlike many other rom-coms in the '90s. The film's superior writing grounds the story in reality, avoiding clichs and making the somewhat far-fetched plot more charming. Notting Hill's supporting characters are realistic and lovable, offering sage advice and comedy without overshadowing the main romance.

Released in 1999, Notting Hill has made its way to Prime Video for those with the Starz add-on subscription, and viewers should be excited. Arguably the best British rom-com of the 90s, the film follows Will Thacker (Hugh Grant), a travel bookstore owner in London's Notting Hill district who begins a romantic relationship of sorts with Anna Scott (Julia Roberts), an international movie star. A regular bloke with a sensible outlook on life, Will begins his relationship with the best intentions but soon realizes he might have bitten off more than hes ready for.

Julia Roberts has donned quite a few iconic roles among the likes of Anna Scott in Notting Hill and Erin Brockovich in Erin Brockovich. And yet, none of her fan-favorite roles is still regarded as incredibly successful and popular as Vivian Ward in Pretty Woman.

But what many people don’t know is that she nearly lost that role right after scoring it.

Although surprising it may seem, Roberts originally bagged the role when the film was under production with a different studio and a whole other storyline.

However, within a mere three days of her getting the chance to play Ward in the iconic rom-com from 1990, the actress pretty much temporarily lost the role — that was until one producer came to the rescue: Garry Marshall.

‘Notting Hill’ 25th anniversary: A look back at Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant’s hit romantic comedy
Image
One of the most celebrated comedies of 1999 is “Notting Hill,” starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant. Written by Richard Curtis and directed by Roger Michell, the film tells of a famous movie actress named Anna Scott who falls in love with a small-town England bookstore owner named William Thacker. Released 25 years ago in May 1999, “Notting Hill” was a major box office success, grossing $364 million worldwide on a $42 million budget. Read on for more about the “Notting Hill” 25th anniversary.

The nation’s critics gave mostly positive reviews to “Notting Hill,” unusual for a studio romantic comedy. Derek Elley in Variety wrote, “[The film] has buckets to spare of that rarest screen commodity — genuine, engaging charm — plus a cast and production values that fully deliver.” Wesley Morris in San Francisco Examiner said, “Director Michell isn’t content to rest on his stars’ slapstick laurels, mining instead the more sophisticated if subversive socio-romantic pratfalls in Curtis’ script.

Julia Roberts Nearly Rejected Her Iconic $364 Million Movie From 25 Years Ago For A Wild Reason
Image
Julia Roberts almost turned down iconic role in Notting Hill due to thinking it would be "boring" to play an actress. Despite initial hesitation, Roberts' portrayal of Anna Scott became one of her most beloved and iconic film roles. Notting Hill remains a standout romantic comedy with Roberts' chemistry with Hugh Grant and Richard Curtis' charm.

Julia Roberts is arguably the queen of romantic comedies, but 25 years ago she almost rejected one of her most famous rom-com roles, for a surprising reason. Over the course of her career, Julia Roberts has played a range of roles across a wide variety of genres. However, the genre Roberts has returned to more than any other is the romantic comedy. The actress has starred in over a dozen rom-coms over the years, with almost every Jullia Roberts romantic comedy proving to be a hit. Nevertheless, one of Roberts' best-known rom-com roles rarely happened.

The Saddest Rom Com Scenes of All Time, Ranked
Image
Rom-coms are a beloved genre of film, making audiences laugh and incorporating relatable situations into the plots. Although they often have happy endings, they don't come without sad scenes that are hard to see, no matter how many times a viewer has watched the film.

By adding emotional scenes, the films become considerably more believable, increasing the depth of the narrative and characters. The best-written rom-coms keep audiences entertained with a premise that sets them apart from the rest. Bridget Jones's Diary and Bridesmaids are very different from each other. What they have in common is the ability to take viewers on a journey with both laughter and pathos, which remain in audiences' minds.

Why Julia Roberts Almost Turned Down ‘Notting Hill’

Julia Roberts almost stayed on this side of the pond before starring in Notting Hill.

In a recent cover interview with the film’s screenwriter Richard Curtis for British Vogue, the Oscar-winning actress admitted she almost turned down the role of Anna Scott in the rom-com because she was “uncomfortable” with the part.

“One of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do was your movie, playing a movie actress,” she told the writer. “I was so uncomfortable! I mean, we’ve talked about this so many times, but I almost didn’t take the part because it just seemed… oh, it just seemed so awkward. I didn’t even know how to play that person.”

The actress also revealed she “loathed” her costume in the film because she didn’t like having to dress like a movie star. The morning they shot the film’s iconic “I’m also just a girl,...

Hugh Grant Calls ‘Notting Hill’ Ending ‘Nauseating’ Due to Easter Egg Detail
Image
Hugh Grant has picked the hill he wants to die on: A “Notting Hill” Easter egg, to be exact.

The deadpan actor revealed during a Wired video alongside “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” co-stars Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez that he found the ending of 1999 rom-com “Notting Hill” to be “nauseating” due to a small detail director Roger Michell included.

“Notting Hill,” which has been considered by many a rom-com classic over the years, stars Julia Roberts as Anna Scott, a famous actress who falls for local British bookstore owner William Thacker (Grant) while filming on location. The final scene shows Anna cuddling with William on a park bench as he reads a novel, one that had a special meaning to late director Michell.

“In that nauseating moment on the bench at the end, I’m reading ‘Captain Corelli’s Mandolin’ by Louis de Bernières, which was going to be his next film,...

Hugh Grant divulges subtle ‘in-joke’ hidden away in ‘nauseating’ Notting Hill scene

Hugh Grant has divulged a subtle “in-joke” hidden away in the “nauseating” final scene of Notting Hill.

The British actor appeared in the 1999 romcom as bookshop owner William Thacker alongside Julia Roberts, who played Hollywood film star Anna Scott.

In the film’s closing moments, William and Anna can be seen cosied up together on a park bench, with Grant’s character reading a book.

In a new interview with Wired, Grant was asked if he remembered what book he was reading in the scene.

The actor, who referred to the scene as “nauseating”, not only remembered, but revealed how it was an in-joke placed there by director Roger Michell, who died in 2021.

“In that nauseating moment on the bench at the end, I’m reading Captain Corelli’s Mandolin by Louis de Bernières, which was going to be his next film,” Grant said, adding: “So it’s a little in-joke from Roger Michell,...

City of Tents: Veterans Row follows the lifespan of this encampment, nicknamed Veterans Row, which gained national attention after two murders and a visit from the U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Denis McDonough. Over eight weekly episodes, hear the stories of the veterans who built the encampment and why it became both a refuge and a source of neighborhood conflict, as well as a microcosm for the larger homelessness crisis in cities around the country.

“I’ve been covering Los Angeles’ homelessness crisis for seven years, and I think...

‘The Woman in the Window’ Marks the End of the Old Hollywood System
Image
“The Woman in the Window” is many things. But this star-studded, twisty Hitchcockian thriller was never intended to debut on May 14 on Netflix with a 40 Metascore. That was hardly the original plan for this handsome, well-appointed New York whodunit, cast with Oscar perennials like Amy Adams, Gary Oldman, and Julianne Moore, which was targeted for primetime October 4, 2019 release.

In many ways, “The Woman in the Window” is a revealing glimpse of studio filmmaking for smart adults that is vanishing into the rearview. Here’s what we know about what was then — and what is now.

Then: Fox 2000 picked up book rights.

Elizabeth Gabler, who ran the prestige label Fox 2000 from 2000-2019, is known for chasing top commercial literary properties such as Oscar-winning global hits “The Devil Wears Prada” ($326 million) and “The Life of Pi” ($609 million). She closed a deal with publisher William Morrow in September 2016 for screen rights to “The Woman in the Window,...

Julia Roberts at an event for Charlie Wilson's War (2007)
See What the Cast of Notting Hill Looked Like at the Movie's Premiere 20 Years Ago
Julia Roberts at an event for Charlie Wilson's War (2007)
We're just fans, sitting at our desks, asking for a few throwback photos from one of the most iconic Julia Roberts movies ever! On May 28, 1999, Notting Hill hit theaters and our lives have never been the same. Whether you love romances, Roberts, or the dreamy Hugh Grant, this rom-com is the ideal movie choice for just about anyone. 20 years ago, Roberts' Anna Scott fell in love with a bookshop owner named William Thacker (Grant) while promoting one of her big Hollywood films—after he spilled orange juice on her and she kissed him—and our dreams of being an American who meets a Londoner and starts a romance grew even more. Even though Anna was in a relationship back in America...

‘Notting Hill’ at 20: Why Julia Roberts Was the Only Choice to Play Anna
Julia Roberts at an event for Charlie Wilson's War (2007)
The manager of London’ Notting Hill Bookshop has a ready supply of Kleenex because so many of the patrons walk in and break into tears.

From 1979-2011, the store was known as the Travel Bookshop. It became famous in “Notting Hill,” the hit romantic comedy celebrating its 20th anniversary on May 28. Julia Roberts stars as Anna Scott, the world’s biggest movie star, and Hugh Grant as Will Thacker, the divorced owner of the bookshop, who meet cute and fall in love.

The actual store was too narrow and small to film there, said manager Olga Lewkowska, so a set was built around the corner from the store, which is located at 4 Blenheim Crescent. The original owner sold the store in 2011 because its focus was too narrow to sustain. The bookshop does still have a travel section but basically features gift books, limited editions or reprints of first editions.

Breaking the James Toback Story: How the La Times’ Glenn Whipp Did It
James Toback
Before Glenn Whipp broke the story of James Toback’s serial sexual harassment with testimonies from 31 women, there was “Doctor Strange” director Scott Derrickson’s Twitter feed. He has nearly 67,000 followers who love his films as well as his passionate takedowns of sexism. When the Harvey Weinstein story first broke in early October, Derrickson cheered on the women who told their stories and the journalists who reported them — and soon he received a Dm from a follower, actress Selma Blair, who had a Toback story to tell.

Derrickson is good friends with Glenn Whipp, a longtime entertainment reporter at the paper. “[Blair] was scared, because she’s a single mother, and she didn’t want to be sued,” Whipp said in an interview with IndieWire on November 3. “With the Times, we can’t offer legal protection, but typically what happens is that the news organization — not the individual — is sued, and...

Director James Toback Calls ‘Anyone’ Who Accuses Him of Sexual Harassment a ‘C—sucker’ or a ‘C–t’
James Toback
Director James Toback has some ill-advised words for the reportedly hundreds of women who have accused him of sexual harassment and assault: “Anyone who says it is a lying c—sucker or c— or both. Can I be any clearer than that?,” Toback said an interview with Rolling Stone published Friday. Rolling Stone’s Hillel Aron spoke to Toback four days before the explosive Los Angeles Times expose in which 38 women accused him of sexual harassment. Aron approached the director with the accounts of nine women, several of which were on the record. One of the accusers was his wife,...

Julia Roberts Reenacts Her Film Career With the Help of James Corden
Craig Kilborn in The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn (1999)
On Wednesday's (Oct. 4) episode of The Late Late Show, Julia Roberts stopped by and reenacted some of her most iconic film roles with the help of James Corden. The host and actress crammed a number of snippets from her impressive filmography of more than 50 movies into a nine-minute sketch.

The duo first took on Roberts' turn in Notting Hill as Anna Scott, a successful actress commonly dubbed "America's Sweetheart." Corden played the role of Will Thacker, an independent bookstore owner originally portrayed by Hugh Grant. Roberts wrapped up by paying homage to the film's most famous line and...
