Etheria Film Festival to celebrate female sci-fi and fantasy filmmakers
Female filmmakers in the sci-fi and fantasy genre will be celebrated with the first ever Etheria Film Festival, to be held in September 2012.

Etheria is the brainchild of film journalist Heidi Honeycutt and the Viscera Organisation, a not-for-profit group dedicated to increasing the visibility of female genre filmmakers.

Etheria is co-presented by...

'Volcano Girl' Proves Superheroines Don't Have To Be Annoying Blow-Up Dolls
What does a 26-year-old superhero do when she loses her job? What any unemployed 26-year-old does - move back in with her mom.

Ashley Maria directs this independent film about Volcano Girl, a government-created superhero who is fired and has to move in with her mom and teenage sister in order to make ends meet. All she's ever done is "superhero", and now - in This economy - what's a person to do?

Starring Bonnie Kathleen Ryan as Virginia (aka Volcano Girl), the film is less about having awesome powers and fantasy sequences than it is about the modern American economy, shifting family dynamics, and a woman having to reinvent herself from a super-powerful, respected hero to ... something elsein a less-than-accommodating work force. Movies about the inner humanity of superheroes always end up as fascinating character studies (The Incredibles, for instance) set in the realm of comic-book heroism.
