Brazilian filmmaker Petra Costa has a way of making documentaries about Brazil that speak directly and crucially to American politics.
Her 2019 Oscar-nominated film The Edge of Democracy illustrated how critical the peaceful transfer of power was to any democratic form of government. That norm was violated in Brazil after the election of Dilma Rousseff as president in 2011, and then sure enough in 2020, not long after her film came out, Donald Trump became the first U.S. president to refuse to peacefully transfer power to his successor, Joe Biden.
Costa’s new film, Apocalypse in the Tropics, examines the rise of Christian Nationalism in Brazil, which is impacting the country in profound and disturbing ways. The movement has been seeded and inspired by Christian Nationalists in the U.S., who are gaining influence here and have become a key component of Pres. Trump’s base. President Donald Trump attempted to nullify preemptive pardons granted to members of the Jan. 6 committee that he has suggested he would like to prosecute.
“The ‘Pardons’ that Sleepy Joe Biden gave to the Unselect Committee of Political Thugs, and many others, are hereby declared Void, Vacant, And Of No Further Force Or Effect,” Trump wrote in the early hours of Monday morning on Truth Social.
The president attempted to justify his social media proclamation by claiming that the pardons Biden issued were invalid because “they were done by Autopen.” The accusation was based on viral,...

International and domestic leaders are scrambling to make their support — or disdain — for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky known after tensions between the United States and Ukraine’s leadership exploded on Friday.
Press, state officials, and diplomats watched in horror as Friday’s Oval Office meeting between President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and Zelensky devolved into a chaotic — televised — shouting match.

Updated: TV news anchors were left stunned after Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky got into a tense Oval Office exchange, with the president at points shouting at the Ukrainian leader.
The purpose of Zelensky’s visit was to sign a mineral rights deal at the White House, but it comes amid talks between the U.S. and Moscow to settle the three-year-old war between Russia and Ukraine. Trump has previously berated Zelensky as a “dictator,” but has had little if any criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
That deal is now off, as is a joint press conference that was planned following the meeting. Zelensky left the White House grounds at about 1:40 p.m. Et.
Trump wrote on Truth Social that Zelensky “disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office. He can come back when he is ready for peace.”

J.D. Vance has signaled the Trump administration may try to ignore judicial orders, which could trigger a constitutional crisis.

Donald Trump Just Went Off On Two Of His Critics
According to the latest reports, almost immediately after swearing in, Trump rips “crying lunatics” Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, says they turned against him because he didn’t want to kill people in wars. The comments come after Biden issued pardons for the two RINOs.
Trump put it this way, “Why are we helping some of the people? Why are we helping Liz Cheney? I mean, Liz Cheney’s a disaster. She’s a crying lunatic and crying, crying. Adam Kinzinger.

In June of last year, Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.) was considering subpoenaing former Trump staffer Cassidy Hutchinson as part of the GOP’s counter investigation into the work of the Jan. 6 committee. The idea was shut down by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), ostensibly over concerns that Hutchinson’s testimony would mean a repeat of the firestorm her 2022 testimony created.
According to a Thursday report from The Washington Post, Johnson’s office was also concerned that subpoenaing Hutchinson would unearth a much more embarrassing scandal: lawmakers sending her sexually explicit text messages.

Updated, with comment from January 6th Committee members: With just a few hours remaining in his presidency, Joe Biden preemptively pardoned Anthony Fauci, General Mark Milley and members of the January 6th Committee and their staffs, amid concerns that they would be targets of investigation by the incoming administration.
Also being pardoned are staffers of the committee and U.S. Capitol and Metropolitan Police officers who testified.
“Our nation relies on dedicated, selfless public servants every day,” Biden said in a statement. “They are the lifeblood of our democracy. Yet alarmingly, public servants have been subjected to ongoing threats and intimidation for faithfully discharging their duties.”
The pardons cover all members of the January 6th Committee, including one of Trump’s most vocal foes — Liz Cheney, who served as vice chair of the committee — as well as its chairman, Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-ms). The president-elect said on Meet the Press...

As the anniversary of the January 6th insurrection looms and Donald Trump prepares for his second inauguration as U.S. President, The Last Republican offers a remarkable profile of courage and conviction against daunting threats, sycophantic fealty, and blatant lies masking contemptible cowardice. Director Steve Pink (known mainly for his comedy movies) spent a year documenting Adam Kinzinger's final days in political office.
Kinzinger, a former US Representative from Illinois and die-hard conservative who voted 93% of the time with Trump, was one of two Republicans on the House Select Committee on the January 6th Attack. He, along with Liz Cheney, voted to impeach Trump and recommend him for criminal referral to the Justice Department. Kinzinger was essentially ousted from office and ruthlessly targeted by the party he'd spent a lifetime supporting in the aftermath.

They call it “Hot Topics” for a reason: Sometimes The View‘s cohosts get truly fired up during the discussions. That was certainly the case on Monday’s (December 9) episode, when things devolved into a bit of a screaming match between Whoopi Goldberg and Ana Navarro. The conversation began with a calmer discussion of Donald Trump’s interview on Meet the Press, in which he talked about him likely pardoning people who were convicted of crimes related to the January 6th insurrection and believing that members of the congressional committee investigating it — including Adam Kinzinger and Liz Cheney — should be jailed instead. “First of all, thank God for Liz Cheney,” Navarro said of the news. “She’s not stalking to Mar-a-Lago to kiss the ring. She’s not going into deep hiding and in silence. She’s not changing her tune all of a sudden. She’s sticking by her guns.

In an episode dedicated to unpacking the 2024 presidential election results, John Oliver’s through-line toward making sense of Kamala Harris’ loss was a running joke pinning the blame on Katy Perry’s “ill-advised” cover of Whitney Houston’s “Greatest Love of All” at a last-minute rally.
While the Last Week Tonight host said that everyone seemed to be spinning their “own personal wheel of blame” to “generally make sure it lands on whoever you were mad at in the first place” — from progressives to bad campaign tactics to key demographics — he has someone else in mind.
“Personally, I kind of would like to imagine that everything that happened on Tuesday is Katy Perry’s fault because at Kamala’s Election Eve rally, she did this ill-advised cover,” he began, playing a clip of the pop singer’s admittedly off-key rendition.

The morning after the election, James Zogby — a stalwart member of the Democratic National Committee for more than three decades — called Rolling Stone to unload. Zogby had been one of the Democratic Party’s few, openly dissenting voices during the campaign. He spoke at length with Rolling Stone about how President Joe Biden’s support for Israel’s war in Gaza was demobilizing key components of the Obama coalition that Kamala Harris needed to win.
Zogby is determined to see Democrats learn from the myriad mistakes that defined the 2024 loss to Donald Trump.

Kamala Harris’ 2024 campaign started out fun. It opened with the politics of joy, and a hearty dose of mockery aimed at Donald Trump and his running mate, J.D. Vance. The campaign quickly adopted a different tack — attempting to project strength and leadership, while courting support from Republicans concerned about the threat posed by Trump.
That approach culminated with Harris campaigning with former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney and touting an endorsement from her father, former Vice President and Iraq War architect Dick Cheney. The pitch bombed with Republicans, as Democrats’ share...

During the final weeks of the 2024 campaign, Kamala Harris toured battleground states with former Republican Rep. Liz Cheney. After she and her dad, Iraq War architect and former Vice President Dick Cheney, endorsed Harris, the Democratic nominee said she was “honored to have their endorsement,” calling them “well-respected,” and saying the Cheneys had made an “important statement that it’s Ok … to put country above party.”
It was all part of the Harris campaign’s bet big on appealing to Republican voters, following what has become Democrats’ favorite strategy for trying to beat Donald Trump,...

Liz Cheney said that the democratic system “functioned last night” as Donald Trump was elected to a new term in the White House, but said that it would be up to citizens, courts, the press and those in government to be the “guardrails of democracy.”
Cheney endorsed Kamala Harris in the presidential race, voting for a Democrat for the first time. Her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, also endorsed Harris.
Cheney wrote on X, “Our nation’s democratic system functioned last night and we have a new President-elect. All Americans are bound, whether we like the outcome or not, to accept the results of our elections. We now have a special responsibility, as citizens of the greatest nation on earth, to do everything we can to support and defend our Constitution, preserve the rule of law, and ensure that our institutions hold over these coming four years. You could hear a pin drop at the Soho House Screening Room as outspoken political gadfly James Carville and filmmaker Matt Tyrnauer talked about their new movie, “Carville: Winning is Everything, Stupid.”
The film barely finished in time for the Telluride Film Festival, as Tyrnauer had to reshoot the entire ending after President Joseph Biden self-destructed at the first presidential debate. The documentary filmmakers at the packed screening were hanging on Carville’s words because he had predicted that if Biden stayed in the race, he would lose, which turned out to be prescient when he finally dropped out and his VP Kamala Harris took over. Carville knew Biden’s weakness from May polling data, and now the room wanted to know what he thought was happening in the week before the election.
But the film, picked up by CNN Films, rolled out late in terms of reaching election voters and awards voters.

There likely won’t be a winner declared when the polls close Tuesday night. But even before the results are final, there are some clear winners and losers in this year’s topsy-turvy race for the White House between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.
Let’s go to the Decision Desk:
Talking Heads
Winner: Charlamagne Tha God
That Comedy Central show may not have worked out, but The Breakfast Club co-host truly spoke truth to power this election season, repeatedly. From warning Americans against what could happen after Election Day, Joe Biden’s electoral and cultural shortcomings and the burning desire out there in a divided nation for less jargon and more straight talk, he was way ahead of the curve. In piercing on-air interviews with Kamala Harris and RNC boss Lara Trump, Charlamagne owned the curve. Calling out CNN’s “bullsh*t”-spouting Anderson Cooper and the mainstream media...

If Kamala Harris wins the presidency, one aspect of her campaign that will be highlighted will be her support from Never Trumpers, the group of Republicans who want to ensure that the former president never makes it back to the White House.
In the election of 2024, these figures have been some of the most vocal in making the case that this isn’t a normal election cycle, that democracy is at stake. Proof enough is that many of them will be casting their ballots for a Democrat for the first time.
Adam Kinzinger is one of the them, having spoken at the Democratic National Convention and appeared on the campaign trail for Harris. Steve Pink’s The Last Republican is backstory of how Kinzinger, a staunch conservative, got to that place. On the eve of Election Day 2024, Liz Cheney is generally feeling optimistic about Kamala Harris’ chances at winning. According to the former U.S. representative, female voters will almost certainly “save the day in this election.”
Stopping by “The View” on Monday morning, Cheney covered a variety of topics, from Donald Trump’s threats to put her in front of a firing squad — “The intimidation will not work” — to her encouragement for women to vote however they want, and simply not tell their husbands.
When host Sara Haines asked Cheney whether she really believes that women will step up, Cheney was straightforward.
“Yes, women are going to save the day in this election,” she said. “I really believe that.”

Exclusive: Former GOP Rep. Adam Kinzinger may not be running for Congress, but he’ll be at the center of another campaign this fall – for Oscar recognition.
Deadline can reveal The Last Republican, the documentary about Kinzinger directed by Steve Pink, will get a week-long Oscar-qualifying run in Los Angeles beginning November 22, accompanied by special screenings in New York, San Francisco, and additional theaters across Los Angeles.
The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, documents Kinzinger’s final term representing his district in Northern Illinois when he made the bold choice to join the select congressional committee investing the January 6th insurrection, knowing it would cost him his political career. In February 2022 the Republican National Committee voted to censure Kinzinger and Rep. Liz Cheney – the only other Republican to join the Democratic-led committee – for participating in the House investigation. Despite immense pressure from his party,...

On the eve of the 2024 presidential election, as the candidates sprint across the remaining swing states to issue their closing campaign messages, The View welcomed former Congresswoman Liz Cheney, a lifelong Republican who’s been a very outspoken Donald Trump critic, to the table to talk about her decision to endorse and stump for Kamala Harris. The first question the panelists had for her, though, was how she reacted to the moment when Trump stated that Cheney needed to have “nine barrels shooting at her [and] let’s see how she feels about it when the guns are trained on her face.” After running the clip and presenting his explanation for the quote — that he was merely criticizing her for being a “war hawk” — Cheney weighed in on the highly controversial clip. “He’s said this nonsense about ‘war hawk’ before, but what he did a couple of days ago, he’s never done before,...

Three days before the election, Kamala Harris made a cameo during the Saturday Night Live cold open, sharing some words with the woman who plays her, Maya Rudolph, as she prepared to give her final Pennsylvania speech of the presidential campaign.
“I’m just here to remind you, you got this, because you can do something your opponent cannot do: You can open doors,” the real Harris said to Rudolph’s Kamala, making a joke about Donald Trump’s trash-truck stunt this past week.
Rudolph’s Kamala then let out a laugh — something that has been the source of Trump’s mockery.
“I don’t really laugh like that, do I?” the real Harris asked.
“Ahhhh…a little bit,” Rudolph’s Kamala responded.

It was like looking in the mirror during the Saturday Night Live cold open as Kamala Harris gave herself a little pep talk ahead of Election Day on Tuesday.
The real-life vice president made a surprise visit to NBC’s sketch comedy series on Saturday, where she got to take a moment to talk with Maya Rudolph, who has been playing Harris since season 50 kicked off in September.
The cold open kicked off with a CNN parody and Chloe Fineman portraying Kaitlan Collins. She first tossed to James Austin Johnson’s Donald Trump at a rally, where he commented on his recent garbage truck stunt and controversial Liz Cheney remarks. Trump then brought out his running mate, Bowen Yang’s J.D. Vance to say a few words.

Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign is getting more fascistic as Election Day nears with the polls practically deadlocked, with the former president calling for networks to lose their broadcasting licenses, threatening to criminally prosecute his political enemies, and fantasizing about Liz Cheney having rifles “trained” on her “face.”

Not only did he slam Kamala Harris, but Carlson unleashed on the ruling class for creating a system that rewards them with money and power.
