Nicole Kidman has been on a hot streak for the last 35 years. Despite having risen to prominence multiple decades ago, she continues to topline quality films and series like a starlet half her age. Her talent is so profound that it transcends sexist and agist industry practices that put actresses of a certain age out to pasture, leaving them to play a matriarch or similar. Her impressive career trajectory is a testament to her talent, universal appeal, and staying power. With all that in mind, you likely won’t be surprised to learn that Kidman stars in the most-watched horror thriller on the Prime Video platform today.
Kidman toplines Holland, a mixture of genre tropes and dark comedy from Mimi Cave (who horror fans might remember from Fresh). The flick is a Prime original that just debuted on the platform late last month (March 28th).

Nicole Kidman once led a modern-day reboot of The Stepford Wives, certain generations might recall. Two decades later, the busy Oscar winner is starring in yet another edgy thriller set in a "perfect" little society where beautiful spouses seem to bow down to their hardworking, idyllic husbands. There's an unspoken notion in the new movie Holland, particularly between Kidman's character and her charming hubby (Succession Mvp Matthew Macfadyen), that the man of the house can do no wrong after "rescuing" her years prior and now providing her with a sort of utopian lifestyle within the eponymous town in Michigan.
But just like The Stepford Wives — and the numerous other high-brow thrillers Kidman has led of late, things go wrong once her heroine starts to sniff things out. Despite the nifty little twists and turns along the way in Holland — directed by Mimi Cave and written by Andrew Sodroski — the 108-minute...

You’ve already seen this Nicole Kidman movie. She’s a housewife and loving mother. She cooks dinner every night and looks gorgeous doing it. But there’s something wrong with her seemingly comfortable life, whether it be scheming spouses, a sudden tragedy, or — in the case of The Stepford Wives — a town that wants to turn her into a robot tradwife. Despite the white picket fences and the picture-perfect nuclear family, there’s an inner turmoil that betrays the shiny veneer of all-American suburbia. She always feels one thing: suffocated.
The deviation from the formula in Mimi Cave’s disappointing second feature is that Kidman’s Nancy Vandergroot lives in Holland. No, not that one — this is Holland, Michigan, an uncanny facsimile of the idyllic town’s Dutch counterpart, complete with a towering windmill and an annual tulip festival. Cave’s debut Fresh cleverly saw Sebastian Stan’s charming...

Prime Video’s latest addition, “Holland,” presents itself as an enthralling mystery thriller that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats from start to finish. Directed by Mimi Cave and penned by Andrew Sodroski, the film boasts a star-studded cast led by Nicole Kidman, alongside Matthew Macfadyen, Gael García Bernal, and Jude Hill. A rollercoaster of suspense, blending elements of drama and psychological intrigue, “Holland” is visually elegant with undeniable directorial style. It features an exceptional lead in Nicole Kidman, who plays a role she’s nearly specialized in: a married woman unsatisfied with her life.
It has all the ingredients for success, and yet, it fails to fully convince us.

Kidman stars as a picture-perfect mom whose life takes a dark turn in this new mystery.
“Sometimes in life, you’ve just got to follow the clues wherever they take you.” And this one takes you straight to Holland, Michigan, where Nicole Kidman - the queen of these kinds of stories - lives a perfect life. Or so it seems. The new film, “Holland,” kicks off in a picture-perfect Michigan town full of tulips, tidy homes, and a seemingly normal family… until Kidman’s character starts digging into a secret that flips everything upside down. Matthew Macfadyen plays her husband (and might not be who he says he is), while Gael García Bernal and Jude Hill round out a cast that gets pulled into a web of lies and surprises. Director Mimi Cave made a big splash on the scene with her feature debut, Fresh, and her second feature, Holland, is another stylish genre picture. Like her previous film, Holland proves that Cave is an exciting director who doesn’t always get the best scripts. However, Holland has enough strong elements that it manages to overcome some of the more underwhelming aspects of its narrative.
Holland Review
Holland follows a woman (Nicole Kidman) living a seemingly idyllic life in small-town Michigan as she begins to suspect that her husband (Matthew Macfadyen) harbors a secret, causing her to investigate the truth with the help of a friend (Gael Garcia Bernal). Although the story will certainly unravel with even the slightest bit of scrutiny, it’s a lot of fun to watch play out, and that makes it a lot better than most thrillers that come out these days.

“Look closer,” exhorted the tagline for a certain 1999 best picture winner that could just as easily apply to Mimi Cave’s thriller Holland, which seeks to find the rot beneath the veneer of American suburbia. In Fresh, Cave’s feature-length directorial debut from 2022, misogyny is literalized as cannibalism, but the rot is harder to boil down to a simple metaphor here, underlying everything like decayed animal matter that feeds a bed of tulips. Narration bookends the film, but it’s aloof and tidy, as if Holland doesn’t seem to want us to know what to make of it. Look closer it orders us, but what are we meant to see?

Nancy Vandergroot (Nicole Kidman), the dewy-eyed protagonist of Mimi Cave’s sophomore feature Holland, has a tendency to somersault to conclusions. At the start of this stylish but plodding film, which premiered at SXSW ahead of its March 27 release on Prime Video, the suburban mother loses a pearl earring. Her husband Fred (a chilling Matthew Macfadyen) suggests she check her junk drawer or the jars housing her craft supplies. Nancy, convinced of her own theories, accuses her son’s tutor, Candy (Rachel Sennott), of theft and promptly fires the befuddled high-school student.
This is a clever introduction to Nancy because later, when she conscripts her friend Dave (Gael García Bernal) to help her investigate whether or not Fred is having an affair, you can’t help but wonder if Nancy might be jumping to conclusions again. Of course anyone familiar with Cave, whose directorial debut Fresh established her as a filmmaker to watch,...

Though it can often feel like she is taken for granted, there are few performers working today who have demonstrated the vast range that Nicole Kidman has. She can be witheringly funny, devastatingly intense and is, most critically, always willing to throw herself into parts that can become tricky balancing acts between the two. In “Holland,” the latest twisty thriller from “Fresh” director Mimi Cave, this is put to the ultimate test.
Not only does Kidman have to flex all these muscles in playing a troubled woman who believes her husband is lying to her, but she must also weather what are some wild escalations that threaten to tear the entire film apart. That it doesn’t is a testament to her committed performance as, when paired with the always reliably engaging camerawork of “Fresh” cinematographer Pawel Pogorzelski, we get drawn into the rhythms of her world that is about...

Holland, Michigan, is one of those high-concept American towns where nothing feels real. Modeled after someone’s fantasy of an 18th-century Dutch village, it has windmills and tulip fields and ersatz canal houses. To Nancy Vandergroot (Nicole Kidman), it seems quaint, but to our eyes, it’s pure kitsch — which is a mode Kidman does well, channeling the tone of “To Die For” and “The Stepford Wives” in Mimi Cave’s mysterious thriller.
Like those movies, “Holland” embeds us largely in its protagonist’s point of view, which isn’t an entirely credible place to spend two hours, but a fun one for those who like teetering in that is-she-crazy-or-is-she-the-only-sane-person-here zone. Since it’s Cave behind the camera, your imagination will likely leap to explanations a lot more interesting than where Andrew Sodroski’s Black Listed script winds up.

2025 has just begun and so many movies have already made an impact on audiences. With the rise in horror movies like Companion and The Monkey and a new addition to the MCU, Captain America: Brave New World, 2025 has already solidified itself as a fascinating year for movies. Mirroring previous years in writing, direction, and overall cinematic spectacle, 2025 promises a variety of films that will inspire audiences for years to come.
It's usually assumed that films released in the earlier months of the year may not capture as much attention or acclaim as later releases. This has been disproved with 2024 releases Dune: Part Two, released on March 1, and Challengers, released on April 26. As the Winter months dwindle and Spring brings about warm weather and new releases, movie-goers are excited to see this lineup of films appear on the big screen.

After starring as Lucille Ball in Amazon’s Being The Ricardos in 2021, earning her an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe win in the process, Nicole Kidman has reunited with Amazon MGM to produce and star in Holland, what has been dubbed as a Hitchcockian thriller.
The script, written by Andrew Sodroski, topped 2013’s Black List, the film industry’s countdown of the best unproduced screenplays.

Fresh off the success of her A24 hit Babygirl, Nicole Kidman is back at it again in Holland, the new thriller from director Mimi Cave (Fresh) and writer Andrew Sodroski (Manhunt) that's set to hit Prime Video on March 27, 2025. Also starring Gael García Bernal and Matthew Macfadyen, the new trailer for the film was just released by the streaming service (seen below) and showcases how Kidman's seemingly perfect life gets upended when she suspects her husband of living a double life.
Giving off a very The Stepford Wives vibe – which starred Kidman in the 2004 adaptation of Ira Levin's novel – the Holland trailer begins with a voiceover from the star as we see images of the picturesque town of Holland, Michigan. "Every day, I get to wake up in the best place on Earth," Kidman says. We're then treated to images of beautiful tulip gardens and her all-American family before she continues.

Nicole Kidman sees her life as a perfect teacher and homemaker in Holland, Michigan, unravel in the official trailer for Holland, which dropped on Tuesday.
The Amazon MGM Studios thriller sees the prolific actor and producer in the role of Nancy Vandergroot, a Stepford wife-like character in a tulip and windmill-filled town who has a community pillar husband, played by Matthew Macfadyen, and Jude Hill (Belfast) as her son.
But the Hitchcock-like tale has Nancy and her friendly colleague, played by Gael García Bernal, begin to suspect the Michigan town has a secret, only to discover nothing in their lives is what it seems. “It’s like, you know, you should leave this scab alone. Picking at it, you’re only going to hurt yourself, but you do it anyways,” Nancy says at one point in a trailer voiceover.
Mimi Cave directed Holland, originally titled Holland, Michigan, with Andrew Sodroski having penned the screenplay.

Nicole Kidman starred in Frank Oz’s version of The Stepford Wives in 2004, so it’s understandable why she wouldn’t tolerate living another picture-perfect life that rots from the inside out. It’s taken years of development, but a trailer for Kidman’s new Hitchcokian thriller, Holland, is here. The film finds Kidman’s character, Nancy Vandergroot, living a cookie-cutter lifestyle as a school teacher in Holland, Michigan, where quaint interactions, dancing, and frivolity reign. However, it is not as it seems after Nancy uncovers a dark secret that threatens the safety of her routine lifestyle.

Nicole Kidman just might be returning to the land of “Stepford Wives” for her latest feature, “Holland.”
The thriller, which is “Fresh” director Mimi Cave’s sophomore feature, stars Kidman as a teacher who uncovers a town secret along with her colleague after she suspects her husband of leading a double life. Could this shatter her perfect suburban world?
“Succession” Emmy winner Matthew Macfadyen and Jude Hill play Kidman’s onscreen family. “Holland” will premiere at the 2025 SXSW Film & TV Festival.
Errol Morris was originally announced as the director for the film in 2013; the film, which was originally titled “Holland, Michigan,” has been in the works for more than a decade, with Cave and Kidman both joining in 2022. Cave’s directorial debut was the 2022 cannibal horror film “Fresh” starring Sebastian Stan and Daisy Edgar-Jones.

Exclusive: Netflix’s film division has preemptively acquired a pitch for an untitled law school thriller from Holland, Michigan‘s Andrew Sodroski, sources tell Deadline.
Netflix could not be reached for comment. While plot details are unknown at this time, the pitch is said to be described as a contemporary spin on The Firm meets The Wolf of Wall Street. Ben Pugh and Peter Dealbert will produce for the L.A. and London-based management and production company 42.
Most recently, 42 worked with Netflix as a producer on its sci-fi actioner Outside the Wire starring Anthony Mackie, which debuted at #1 and was watched by 66 million households in its first quarter on the platform. Sodroski’s pitch marks 42’s second pre-emptive sale in a row on the heels of The Bet, a thriller spec from Enemy‘s Javier Gullón that sold to Warner Bros for what we’re told was a significant figure.

The Black List has been responsible for some of Hollywood's most notable films and the greatest recognition of many upcoming screenwriters for almost two decades. After first being established in 2004, the Black List has become a prestigious annual survey that highlights the most popular un-produced screenplays. Upon landing on this list, these featured screenplays can then get the attention and chance of big studios or filmmakers to properly develop the project. One specific upcoming movie project comes from the 2013 Black List-certified screenplay titled Holland, Michigan written by Andrew Sodroski. It was first announced in June 2022 that Mimi Cave will helm the film with Nicole Kidman starring and producing the suburban mystery thriller.

Seven months have passed since it was announced that Nicole Kidman would be starring in and producing a Hitchcockian thriller called Holland, Michigan – a project that has spent the last decade in development hell. It started out with a screenplay by Andrew Sodroski, creator of the Discovery television series Manhunt, that was featured on the Black List back in 2013. At one point, documentarian Errol Morris was going to direct a version of Holland, Michigan that was going to star Naomi Watts, Bryan Cranston, and Edgar Ramirez. But it fell apart before filming could begin. Now Kidman is working with director Mimi Cave – who recently made her feature directorial debut with the thriller Fresh – to finally make Holland, Michigan happen. And The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Kidman has secured a co-star: Gael García Bernal (Werewolf by Night).
Details on the character Bernal will be playing have not been revealed.
