Fun Trailer for Mock Doc Horror Comedy 'Everybody Dies by the End'
Image
"We have only one chance to capture this..." Terror Films has unveiled an official trailer for an indie horror comedy called Everybody Dies by the End, made by Ian Tripp and Ryan Schafer. This premiered at a few genre festivals last year, and will be launching on VOD to watch around the world this September. A documentary crew is hired by larger than life horror director, named Alfred Costella, to chronicle him as he finishes his final film, an all-practical masterpiece with some dark twists. After becoming a sensation with the successes Battery Acid, Psycho Menace, and Kill Time Now, a car crash talk show interview ten years ago looked like ending his illustrious career. But now he’s returning to the independent movie fold to make his final shocker. And invited along to cover every aspect of the production is a documentary film crew... What could possibly go wrong?...

Let’s Scare Bryan to Death: Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s Resolution with Philip Yount
Image
Welcome back to a new Let’s Scare Bryan to Death, where we’re diving into a freaky whirlpool of addiction, cosmic horror, and meta discussions about storytelling as we explore Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s debut feature, Resolution. Joining me for this surreal journey is Philip Yount, a graphic designer, metalhead, and cosmic horror enthusiast whom you likely know from the great Dead Ringers podcast (regulars may remember we had founder/co-host Nolan McBride on for a discussion on Lake Bodom). You can also catch Philip on his Twitch channel, where he’s likely painting fantasy miniatures or playing the odd game or two.

It was actually while guesting on a recent episode of Dead Ringers that I revealed myself to be unacquainted with the work of Monsieurs Benson and Moorhead, and since I’d already been looking for an excuse to chat with Philip about a movie...

Frightfest 2022: ‘Everybody Dies By the End’ Review #2
Image
Stars: Bill Oberst Jr., Vinny Curran, Ian Tripp, Brendan Cahalan, Ryan Schafer, Seton Edgerton, Iliyana Apostolova| Written by Ian Tripp | Directed by Ian Tripp, Ryan Schafer

With a title like that you kind of have to deliver as a horror movie. It also kind of gives away what is going to happen in the movie but is it really a spoiler when you say everyone is going to die in your genre film. That said, the journey that Everybody Dies By the End takes is just as rewarding.

Everybody Dies By the End follows a documentary crew of two, who have been asked to film the first movie in ten years by ‘legendary’ cult filmmaker Alfred Costella, who has also said it will be his last film. They are told to keep the camera’s rolling throughout his practical effects-filled movie with a dark twist.

You absolutely have a very...

Frightfest 2022: ‘Everybody Dies by the End’ Review
Image
Stars: Bill Oberst Jr., Vinny Curran, Ian Tripp, Brendan Cahalan, Ryan Schafer, Seton Edgerton, Iliyana Apostolova| Written by Ian Tripp | Directed by Ian Tripp, Ryan Schafer

Everybody Dies by the End opens as talk show host Willy Wilson goading cult director Alfred Costella into what seems to be a career-ending meltdown. But ten years later he’s back and offering Calvin (Ian Tripp; Imperial Iliad) and his soundman Mark played by Joshua Wyble who actually worked sound on this film as well as The Evil Rises and Wallflower among others, a job. They’ll be documenting what he says will be his greatest, and last, production. It’s a shot in chronological order with all practical effects masterpiece entitled Everybody Dies by the End.

Making their feature-length debut, directors Ian Tripp and Ryan Schafer, working from a script by Tripp, frame Everybody Dies by the End as a mockumentary and...

Something in the Dirt teaser trailer: Justin Benson, Aaron Moorhead film gets November release
Image
Last year, we heard that the filmmaking duo of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead were “returning to their DIY indie origins” with a new project called Something in the Dirt. Now a teaser trailer for Something in the Dirt has arrived online – and along with that comes the information that the movie is going to receive a theatrical release on November 4th!

Benson and Moorhead directed Something in the Dirt from a script written by Benson. The duo also produced the film and star in it… and the movie was actually filmed in their apartments during the pandemic shutdown. Here’s the story they’re telling with this one:

Two new neighbors witness what seems to be a supernatural event in one of their apartments. At first terrified, they realize that documenting this phenomenon could provide them the lives they’ve always dreamed of.

Benson and Moorhead are joined in...

‘The Endless’ Review
Stars: Justin Benson, Aaron Moorhead, Callie Hernandez, Vinny Curran, Peter Cilella, James Jordan | Written and Directed by Justin Benson, Aaron Moorhead

Spring was one of my favourite horror movies of 2015. Mixing Lovecraftian horror with the strangest of love stories and creating an emotional, original and beautiful genre film. Directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead now return with The Endless.

Like Spring before it, The Endless is a truly unique movie. Two brothers, Justin and Aaron (played by the directors) return to a cult that they both fled from ten years previous. The writing is good enough that this doesn’t seem as stupid an idea as it might. The brothers haven’t had exactly the greatest of lives since leaving the cult and Aaron in particular wants to see what the cult is like now he is an adult. Justin is less sure but hopes his brother will find some...

Interview: ‘The Endless’ and Brotherly Love and the Power of Fear
We chat with Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson about love and rehearsals and life and more rehearsals at Tribeca.Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead in ‘The Endless’. Oh, brother, there art thou!

The Shallow Pocket Project is going to Tribeca (in spirit)! We’ll be chatting with several independent filmmakers making the trek to New York for this year’s film festival. Stay tuned! Check out our last chat with Ted Geoghegan (Director of ‘We Are Still Here’). Special thanks, as always, to In The Mouth of Dorkness, Lisa Gullickson, and Darren Smith.

Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson’s The Endless premiered Friday night at Tribeca. I’m here to tell y’all, they’ve upped their filmmaking game. While still writing, directing, shooting, and producing, they’re also starring in the film. Because why not? I don’t know how they do it. I’m tired just putting words on a page. They...

Ben Mendelsohn and Jamie Dornan Become ‘Untogether,’ Michael Cera Joins Aaron Sorkin’s Debut, and More
In today’s casting round-up, THR reports that Jamie Dornan, Ben Mendelsohn, and sisters Jemima and Lola Kirke will be teaming together for the indie drama Untogether, the directorial debut of best-selling author Emma Forrest. The film concerns Jemima Kirke’s former-teen-prodigy-turned-junkie Andrea, who has an affair with Nick (Dornan) while she’s clean and trying to be a writer. Nick is already a successful writer, regaling the world with stories of his war-time experiences. Lola Kirke plays Jemima’s younger sister, whose relationship with the older Mendelsohn is tested when she falls for a Rabbi with an even larger age gap than her and Mendelsohn. Forrest will pen the script as well, which is being produced by Luke Daniels, Scott Lastaiti, and Brandon K. Hogan.

THR is also reporting that Michael Cera is currently in discussion to star in Aaron Sorkin‘s directorial debut Molly’s Game, alongside Jessica Chastain and Idris Elba.

Spring Review
This review was originally published during Fantastic Fest 2014.

Since festival audiences have already exhausted the “Spring is like…” comments over every form of social media (Spring is like Before Sunrise meets H.P. Lovecraft, for example), I’ll just plainly say that Spring is romantically horrific bliss, achieving perfection through tragedy and soul. Is there a subgenre of horror equatable to the “Mumblecore” scene yet? If not, filmmakers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have pioneered it, throwing together a loving tale that’s aided by a creature-feature subplot akin to a Troma production on super-steroids.

There’s something so primal and affectionate about Spring. It strikes an honesty that’s notably reminiscent to Richard Linklater’s or Joe Swanberg’s crowning work. It’s the most regal of Shakespearean epics meets the most sinister Joe Dante feverdream, striking a wealth of emotional riches while also utilizing beastly effects reminiscent of Landis...

Resolution (2012) Review
By Jonathan Weichsel

MoreHorror.com

Note: This review original appeared April of 2013 on the now defunct website Planet Fury.

I have read a lot of online reviews lately bashing indie horror as a whole for being derivative, unimaginative, and amateurish. I have been reviewing indie horror films for years, and I have watched my share of knockoffs made by people with no knowledge of the genre, and “homages” made by filmmakers who follow the rules of the genre so slavishly that their films end up adding nothing new. Like these other critics, I get sick of it too. But every once in awhile I come across a great indie horror movie like Resolution directed by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, a clever, innovative, unique little film that slowly gets under your skin. Films like Resolution are the reason indie filmmaking exists.

When Michael Danube (Peter Cilella) receives a mysterious email...

First Trailer & Photos from Spring
Evan needs to get away for awhile after his mother dies. With no set schedule or destination plan in place, he ends up on the coast of Italy, where he meets and falls in love with a beautiful woman named Louise. Their blossoming romance seems like a fairy tale, but the dark secret Louise harbors could turn their relationship into a living nightmare that’s hinted at in the first trailer for Spring.

Spring makes its world premiere at Tiff tonight. We have the film’s official synopsis and cast information below (courtesy of Tiff):

“When his ailing mother dies, Evan (Lou Taylor Pucci, of the recent Evil Dead) realizes his life isn’t going anywhere. Grabbing his last paycheque, he decides to go on the European graduation trip that he never got a chance to take. Picking a destination at random, he arrives in Italy, where he backpacks and parties with other tourists.

Lou Taylor Pucci finds something supernatural in the first trailer for ‘Spring’
Filmmakers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead made a big splash with their debut feature Resolution, with the film ending up among the year’s best on Sound on Sight. The duo subsequently were added to the group of filmmakers who will contribute a short film to the upcoming anthology V/H/S: Viral, but before that comes their second feature film. Titled Spring, Benson takes on solo scriptwriting duties for the film, which revolves around a young man who ends up wanted for assault shortly after his mother’s death, causing him to flee to Italy, where he strikes up a romance where all is not as it seems. The duo reunites with Vinny Curran for the film, who is joined in the cast this time around by Lou Taylor Pucci and Nadia Hilker. Ahead of the film’s world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, and following the...

Machine Head Review
“Man, if college kids keep watching horror movies about Spring Break, they’ll never want to invade isolated getaways for a week-long alcohol, drug, and sex binge again!” – hopes every overprotective parent in America. Yes, it’s true that horror films love exploiting Spring Break for all its debaucherous shenanigans, picking from a goldmine of horny, drunk, uninhibited party goers with zero awareness, but some attempts are nothing but a lame buzzkill – like the dude who shows up carrying wine coolers. Weak bro.

Take Jim Valdez’s Machine Head for example – three girls, three guys, a lavish house in the middle of nowhere, and a stalker obsessed with “Ding-Dong-Ditch.” About as brainless as some drunken sorority girl looking to get revenge on mommy and daddy, Valdez never once achieves even a modicum of slasher glory despite casting three bodacious babes – I know, right?! How can a horror movie be so...

Resolution Blu-Ray Review
Furious that I missed Resolution during its Tribeca run in 2012, I’ve been anxiously waiting to get my grubby paws on a copy of the Blu-Ray for review – and it didn’t disappoint. Writer/director Justin Benson and director Aaron Moorhead created a tantalizing bit of mindfuckery that exemplifies all the best aspects of independent filmmaking, not really adhering to one single genre. While most assuredly a psychological horror film, there are moments of lighthearted, comical banter, and also dramatic, tension filled scenes full of mystery. It’s a bit of a tonal mish mosh, but the flavors are all farm fresh, grade A quality – in other words, they work wonderfully together.

The plot is rather simple – Michael Danube (Peter Cilella) wants to save his drug addicted best friend Chris Daniels (Vinny Curran). Fortunately for Michael, Chris has fled into the woods and is currently living in a remote cabin,...

A Spoiler Free Blu-Ray Review Of Resolution
For those of you that keep up with us, you’ll probably know that Resolution is a film that we’ve been talking about for a while now. At least a year, anyway, since Jeff saw the film at last year’s Toronto After Dark, and not only that, but had the “Pubcast” edition of the podcast, recorded at Pub After Dark, directly after the festival, invaded by the inebriated cast and crew of the film. It certainly made for a fun listen, and I’m fairly sure it made for an epic experience for Jeff, getting to hang with those guys for such an extended period of time. In fact, You can listen to that here, as it will make for a great companion to the movie itself. After becoming aware of the movie, and hearing all of the things Jeff had to say about it, I knew this...

Resolution Blu-ray / DVD Release Date and Cover Art
After a VOD and limited theatrical release earlier this year, Resolution is headed to Blu-ray, DVD, and digital platforms on October 8th.

“In an abandoned cabin on the edge of an Indian reservation, Mike (Peter Cilella) stages a risky intervention to force his friend Chris (Vinny Curran) off meth and into rehab. But what begins as an attempt to save his friend’s life takes an unexpected turn when ominous threats start appearing around the house – and they realize that Chris’s addictions are the least of their worries. One of the most talked-about discoveries of last year’s festival circuit, Resolution is genre-bending horror at its most bone-chilling.”

Resolution was directed by Justin Benson and Aaron Scott Moorhead, and stars Peter Cilella, Vinny Curran, Kurt David Anderson, Emily Montague, Skyler Meacham, and Zahn McClarnon. The movie will be released on DVD, as well as a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack.

How Resolution Will Help You Have Sex!
Though the home video release is still just under three months away on October 8th I think it wise that Resolution filmmakers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorehead, along with their leads Peter Cilella and Vinny Curran, let you know now that their movie increases your chances of experiencing carnal delights. Like myself, not everyone has someone at the ready to jump in the sack. Review: ‘Resolution’ Keeps Tension and Humor Equally in Focus, Mostly
Resolution has been making the festival rounds for a short while now, and it’s left a strong mark as a smart horror film. Comparisons to the higher profile Cabin In the Woods are frequent, but the two actually share little in common aside from their desire to break away from the genre template. Granted, most of the action here does take place in a cabin in the woods… But the events that transpire differ wildly. Instead of the expected archetypes, our leads are simply two old friends reunited by loyalty, compassion and something that oozes evil from every possible pore (or whatever the evil equivalent of pores are). Kills A few stragglers get offed. Ills Not a lot of physical ills here, but there’s some definite creepiness running throughout. Lust It’s a veritable sausage-fest. Learning Drug addicts are lost causes. Especially when they’re hanging out in otherwise deserted cabins in the middle of...

The Filmmakers Behind ‘Resolution’ Want to Impress You With This Exclusive Clip
You know that terrible, bumper-friendly saying, “friends help you move, real friends help you move bodies?” Well, turns out, it’s not entirely accurate – real friends help you detox from meth while rangy, money-hungry drug dealers try to knock down your door. Such is the plot of Justin Benson and Aaron Scott Moorhead‘s genre-bending Resolution. In the film, Mike (Peter Cilella) decides to stage an intervention for his methhead friend Chris (Vinny Curran), the kind of intervention that involves handcuffing his pal to a pipe in a dirty cabin while all sorts of weird things keep happening around them. Trust us, there is far more to this very surprising project than that little logline could ever let on. Do you think you know what’s going to happen next? Nope. You don’t. Check out a very special exclusive clip (and Reject-special introduction!) from Resolution after the break, one that will surely continue to lull you...

Shock Interview: Resolution's Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead
Today, Tribeca Films ushers Resolution into theaters, albeit in an extremely limited theatrical run.  There's good news, however, if the film isn't playing near you, you can find it on VOD - and we recommend you do so.

Directed by Justin Benson and Aaron Scott Moorhead, Resolution stars Peter Cilella as Michael, a man who venture out to a secluded cabin to help his friend Chris (Vinny Curran) go cold turkey.  He handcuffs Chris to the wall, provides him with food, water and friendly company until Chris kicks his drug addiction.  But, it turns out, there's a sinister force watching them and peculiar events begin to occur.  Is it the work of a weirdo UFO cult?  The drug dealers threatening Chris?  Or something else?

ShockTillYouDrop.com spoke with Benson (who also wrote the script) and Moorhead about the production and what is wrong with horror today.

Resolution Movie Review
Resolution (2012)
Title: Resolution Directors: Justin Benson and Aaron Scott Moorhead Starring: Peter Cilella, Vinny Curran, Emily Montague, Kurt Anderson, Skyler Meacham, Zahn McClarnon, Bill Oberst Jr., Josh Higgins A genre-bending, psychologically twisty, meta-horror tale that played to welcome reception at last year’s ScreamFest and Tribeca Film Festivals, “Resolution” bears a deceptively simple and straightforward title and logline synopsis for a movie that is anything but. When a well-meaning guy holes up with his old junkie friend in a cabin in the woods and forces him to kick cold turkey, strange events, mysterious visitors and personal demons commingle to intriguing, ambiguous effect. A fresh conceit told with an unfussy assurance, ”Resolution” marks a solid calling [ Read More ]

Resolution (2012)

Directed by up-and-coming filmmaking duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, Resolution starts off somewhat normally as we follow the well-meaning Michael (Peter Cilella) on his quest to get his life-long best friend Chris (Vinny Curran) off drugs after receiving a disturbing video of Chris whacked out of his mind and shooting guns at the unseen forces chasing after him in the middle of nowhere (or more specifically - meth country).

But when Michael arrives at Chris' place and forces his friend to confront his addictions and the mess he's made of his life, the duo get far more than they bargained for when things take a turn for the weird and they're forced to deal with a supernatural entity that has infiltrated...

New Resolution One Sheet Emphasizes Cabin In the Woods
There are a number of us in these parts who fell in love with Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead's indie mind-bender Resolution on the festival circuit. Regular Twitch readers will recall the festival promo video series which they clearly had a lot of fun making (and we had a lot of fun posting). With the film set for VOD release Jan 23 and an L.A. only theatrical release Jan 25, Tribeca Films have commissioned this swanky new poster which emphasizes the three key elements of the film: Pals in a Cabin, supernatural whatthefuckery, and media (the books, tapes and 8mm film kind, not nosy reporters).Michael (Peter Cilella) is committed to getting his best friend Chris (Vinny Curran) to sober up and get his life back on...

Tadff 2012: ‘Resolution’ has a reach as far as its grasp
Resolution

Directed by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead

Written by Justin Benson

USA, 2012

In Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s Resolution, Michael (Peter Cilella), after receiving a mysterious video, sets out to the backwaters to help save and sober up his estranged crack-addicted friend Chris (Vinny Curran). Finding him in a rundown cabin, Michael handcuffs Chris to a pipe in an impromptu attempt at an intervention. As their relationship also goes into rehabilitation mode, they are confronted by a series of confrontational neighbours and mysterious pieces of left behind information, ranging from old photos to diaries, VHS tapes, film reels, and vinyl records.

Initially, the film starts off as a rather innocuous drama about two friends. There’s hefty talk about their regrets, people and events from their past (especially from high school), their different life directions, and their tenuous relationship. Due to some good chemistry between the leads and some sharp dialogue,...

Tribeca Films Makes a Resolution
After a successful run at the Fantasia International Film Festival, Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson’s Resolution has scored itself some distribution Stateside. Read on for the full details, including when you can expect to dig on the flick yourself.

From the Press Release:

Mysterious forces, personal demons, dark humor and gripping performances combine in the genre-defying tour-de-force Resolution. Tribeca Film has acquired all North American rights from Xyz Films to rising directing duo Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson’s naturalistic-yet-otherworldly thriller. The film’s enigmatic narrative and fresh take on genre filmmaking captivated audiences and critics at its Tribeca Film Festival and Fantasia International Film Festival premieres earlier this year.

Moorhead and Benson brilliantly straddle the line between raw thrills and honest emotion as complex characters and powerful performances drive this ambitious, unconventional narrative about two friends, one a junkie forced to go cold turkey in an isolated cabin,...
