Sola Media has closed sales for multiple territories for “The Sloth Lane,” which will world premiere at the Annecy Intl. Animation Film Festival. Sola will be presenting a first look at the trailer at the Cannes Market.

The story, which centers on an adorable family of sloths and their journey to the fast-paced world of Sanctuary City with their slow food truck, has sold to more than 40 territories including Portugal (Nos), Hungary and Romania (Ads), Israel (Filmhouse), Taiwan (AvJet), Greece (Tanweer), Turkey (Tme) and Middle East (Krisco).

Wellmania will not be returning for a second season. Netflix has cancelled the Australian comedy-drama series, according to the star of the series, Celeste Barber. She revealed the news in a video shared on her Instagram account.

Also starring JJ Fong, Johnny Carr, Lachlan Buchanan, Remy Hii, Genevieve Mooy, and Alexander Hodge, the series is based on the Wellmania: Misadventures in the Search for Wellness book. Bridgit Delaney wrote the book and co-created the series with Benjamin Law. The series tells the story of Liv (Barber) as she abandons her "live fast, die young" philosophy following a major health scare and the cancellation of a dream job in the United States.

Netflix will not be making a return trip to Wellmania. The series has been cancelled after one season, star and executive producer Celeste Barber has revealed in an emotional Instagram video.

“I just wanted to check in and give you a little update to let you know that Wellmania will not be renewed for another season,” Barber’s message begins. “I understand that in the grand scheme of things, with what is going on in the world at the moment, who f–king cares? But a lot of you do care. A lot of you are still asking me about it.

Sales agency Sola Media is set to present its new project “The Sloth Lane” to buyers at the American Film Market. The animated film, an addition to the “Tales From Sanctuary City” franchise, is described as “a story of self discovery, family and friendship.”

Australia’s Like a Photon Creative is producing the film and Sola Media is handling world sales, after recently acquiring international distribution rights for the next three animated feature films in the Sanctuary City franchise.

“Hold Still, Vincent,” a podcast from actress Gemma Chan about the 1982 murder of Chinese American man Vincent Chin, has been pulled after complaints from his family.

Late last month, Helen Zia, an Asian American activist and journalist who represents the Chin estate, wrote on Instagram that she had not been contacted by A-Major Media or any of the producers of the star-studded podcast. Simon Baker, Yael Stone, Josh Lawson and newcomer Julia Savage are among the key cast of director Del Kathryn Barton’s debut feature Blaze (formerly Puff), which recently wrapped shooting in Sydney.

Barton, a dual Archibald prize winner, wrote the script with Huna Amweero (Jade of Death), with the work inspired by Barton’s painting ‘sing blood-wings sing’, which was in turn inspired by Peter Paul and Mary song ‘Puff, the Magic Dragon’.

A hybrid work of live-action, VFX and animation, Blaze sees Savage plays a young girl who accidentally witnesses a woman being violently attacked, leaving her catatonic with shock and struggling to make sense of what she saw.

She retreats into imaginary worlds, where Zephyr, the shimmering magic dragon who has been her companion since childhood, allows her to activate her own rage and ultimately find renewal.

Installed as ABC head of comedy in July, Todd Abbott will start evaluating the development materials of the comedy projects that received support under the $5 million Fresh Start Fund this week – and next week he hopes to greenlight development on several projects that he’s already been evaluating.

That’s the good news for Australian producers and creators – tempered by the fact that the broadcaster’s comedy slate for 2021 is fully committed. So the projects that will advance from now on will premiere in 2022.

Filming has got under way in Adelaide on Australian comedy-drama series “Aftertaste.” It is the first major production to shoot in the state of South Australia since the coronavirus shut-down, and comes as a state of disaster and a nighttime curfew are declared in neighboring Victoria state, which includes Melbourne.

The six-part Closer Productions show will shoot for five weeks in Adelaide and the Adelaide Hills. It makes use of 110 cast and crew members, including 10 from out of state, and 200 extras.

To get into production, the show used a risk assessment tool developed by consultancy firm Deloitte and overseen by the South Australia Film Corporation. “The Risk Assessment Tool has been instrumental in navigating the path back to production, and providing the framework and structure needed to get this production up and running within Covid-Safe guidelines,” said CEO of the South Australian Film Corporation Kate Croser.

Muriel’s Wedding The Musical lead Natalie Abbott will star opposite Erik Thomson in ABC/Closer Productions’ comedy Aftertaste, which has just started shooting in Adelaide and Adelaide Hills following Covid-19 delays.

Abbott has been cast as the pastry-chef niece of Thomson’s Easton West, who helps her uncle, an internationally-renowned yet volatile celebrity chef, rebuild his career and reputation after a spectacular fall from grace.

The comedy, created by Julie De Fina and Matthew Bate, has also attracted a stacked ensemble cast, including Rachel Griffiths, Wayne Blair, Susan Prior, Peter Carroll, Remy Hii, Kavitha Anandasivam and Justin Amankwah.

Bate produces with Thomson and Rebecca Summerton, and he and de Fina wrote the scripts with Matt Vesely. De Fina and Griffiths are the executive producers with Rebecca Anderson from the ABC. Director Jonathan Brough will helm all six episodes.

Godfrey Gao, the Taiwanese Canadian model-actor who broke stereotypes for Asian men in the worlds of fashion and entertainment, died Wednesday in China. He was 35.

Gao, who starred in 2012’s “The Mortal Instuments: City if Bones,” was filming a Chinese TV show called “Chase Me” — a reality competition show where contestants perform arduous physical tasks — when he collapsed. He was attended by the show’s staff and rushed to a hospital, where sudden cardiac death was announced, reportEd the Straits Times.

“In the early hours of Nov. 27, our beloved Godfrey collapsed while filming on set. Unfortunately following three hours of medical rescue efforts, he left us. We are very shocked and saddened and even until now find it impossible to accept,” a statement from his management company JetStar read on the Chinese social media site Weibo.

Ioan Gruffudd is set to make his directing debut on season 3 of the ABC’s Harrow, which starts shooting next month in Brisbane and South-East Queensland.

‘Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.’

As a spin-off, Universal’s Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw was never destined to roar out of the starting blocks with the same velocity as the previous editions of the franchise.

But the opening weekend for the action thriller starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham in Australia over-indexed the Us bow and the worldwide tally was a none-too-shabby $179 million.

The top 20 titles generated $17.4 million, a slight 7 per cent dip on the previous weekend, according to Numero. Palace’s French psychological drama/thriller Who You Think I Am proved to be effective counter-programming for non-rev-heads, while Sony’s Chinese firefighting movie The Bravest fared Ok on limited screens.

Remy Hii landed a supporting role in Sony/Marvel’s Spider-Man: Far From Home just two days after he sent a self-tape to the producers.

Now he is in Los Angeles, celebrating the sequel’s stellar debuts in the Us, Australia and multiple other markets.

Directed by Jon Watts, the action adventure, which also features Angourie Rice, smashed the all-time opening day record in the Us and racked up $150.4 million after its first few days in international markets.

Set in Europe after the events of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the movie rang up $2.92 million in Australia on Monday, Sony Pictures’ biggest ever launch day. Through Wednesday it has earned $6.96 million, according to Numero.

Starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker, Zendaya as Mj, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Jake Gyllenhaal as Quentin Beck/Mysterio, it scored an estimated $39.3 million in the Us on Tuesday.

Spider-Man: Far From Home features some of our favorite returning Marvel stars, including Tom Holland (Peter Parker/Spider-Man), Jacob Batalon (Ned), and Zendaya (Mj). But there are also some new, insanely attractive faces gracing the big screen with their presence. One of the standout hunks is the character Brad Davis, who competes with Peter for Mj's attention. "Stark made you an Avenger. The world needs people like you." Sony has debuted an official Chinese trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home, the next Spidey sequel in theaters in just about a month. This new 60-second trailer is basically a rehash of the recent full-length trailer, with some extra bits of new footage thrown in. Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker, with Jake Gyllenhaal playing Mysterio. Parker and his friends take a summer trip over to Europe, where they get in all kinds of trouble when Nick Fury (and some other bad guys) show up to wreak havoc. This also continues the McU storyline from Homecoming, and Avengers: Endgame, with one major spoiler appearing in this trailer. The cast includes Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Samuel Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Angourie Rice, Remy Hii, Martin Starr, Numan Acar, and Tony Revolori. Looks like Spidey kept that special suit from Endgame with all the extra appendages.

The CW is still keen on a Jane The Virgin spin-off despite not picking up Jane The Novela and is in talks with creator/exec producer Jennie Snyder Urman to develop another take.

Jane the Novela, from the creative team of Jane the Virgin, was written by Jane scribe Valentina Garza and directed by Brad Silberling. It was not a traditional spin-off but was a soapy, telenovela-inspired anthology series in the tradition of Jane the Virgin, where each season is based on a different fictional novel “written by” Jane Villanueva and narrated by the author herself. Jane the Virgin creator/exec producer Jennie Snyder Urman, star Gina Rodriguez, and exec producers Ben Silverman also executive produced.

Here’s a shout-out to producers: The ABC is keen to find another genre series to fill a gap as Matchbox Pictures’ Glitch comes to its conclusion after three seasons.

The pubcaster is also looking for a multi-generational relationship drama, comedies for Wednesday nights and shows with diverse casts and creatives across all genres.

It is less interested in programs set in small country towns and procedural crime series, particularly with the second series of Hoodlum Entertainment’s Harrow premiering on May 12 and the second season of Bunya Productions’ Mystery Road due to shoot later this year in Broome.

That’s the word from ABC head of scripted production Sally Riley. She hopes the funding for her domain – drama, comedy and Indigenous content – for the next financial year will not be less than the last couple of years, despite the federal government-imposed three-year $83.7 million funding cut.

Jane the Virgin may be wrapping up its story in a neat little bow by the end of the year, but at least there's a spinoff in the works.

Thankfully, a familiar face from the regular series is attached to co-star on the potential new series titled Jane the Novella.

Deadline has revealed that Ivonne Coll, who plays Jane's grandma, Alba, on the soapy CW drama will take on the role of a brand new character on the spinoff.

Her character will be called Camila, the adoptive mother of Estela, the character the new show will revolve around for its first season if it gets a series order.

As previously reported, the new series will be an anthology with each season being based on a different fictional novel written by Jane Villanueva aka the lead character of Jane the Virgin.
