His approach, though, differs significantly from the majority of them, even if kids are among the protagonists once more.

Zafeen Zairizal shines in the lead role, showcasing depth beyond her years in the unique coming-of-age film, Tiger Stripes. Amanda Nell Eu's direction and Jimmy Gimferrer's cinematography create stunning visuals that draw audiences in. Despite its rushed ending and unanswered questions, Tiger Stripes cleverly intertwines body horror with themes of female empowerment.
The coming-of-age genre has seen a wide variety of approaches to the formula, ranging from the more lighthearted My Girl to the Oscar-winning Moonlight, though they most typically take a grounded and straightforward route to the story. Then along comes Tiger Stripes, the body horror movie that was Malaysia's entry for Best International Feature Film at the Oscars following its acclaimed debut at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. Melding gut-wrenching body horror with unique parallels between puberty and transformation, writer-director Amanda Nell Eu's feature debut is thoughtful and intriguing, even if it doesn't fully soar.

Shooting a romantic sex comedy in countries such as Malaysia and Singapore (that co-produced the movie along with Hong Kong's One Cool Film Production), where censorship borders on the Draconian, is not exactly an easy feat, even more so when the story makes a series of rather pointed comments against the ways religion functions and the blights of patriarchy. It is what M. Raihan Halim chose to do nevertheless, in a film that manages to retain its lightness and hilarity, even though its subject matters are rather serious.

“Songlap”, by the husband-wife team of Effendee Mazlan and Fariza Azlina is often described as a social realist film about the disenfranchised in the dark urban underbelly of Kuala Lumpur. But here I want to explore it as a neo-noir that’s uniquely Malaysian in its ethos. Songlap is a colloquial term connoting stealing or taking everything, which is about wanting to have it all mindset that is common within criminals or even referring to the ending, where it can be seen in a more positive manner.
“Songlap” is streaming on Mubi
The story is about two brothers both named Adam. The younger is Ad (played by Syafie Naswip) and the elder is Am (played by Shaheizy Sam) who works for a baby-trafficking ring being run by someone only called as Mama. The name choice Adam is as intentional as it can be where they both are sons of a...

Adam is an ex-police photographer who experienced a nervous breakdown and quit the force. Currently he suffers from hallucinations and spends his time in his apartment, secretly watching his neighbors with his camera, and particularly a woman, Iva. Eventually, detective Man, an ex co-worker asks Adam to help him in an investigation regarding a number of brutal murders. As they discover some photographic negatives made of glass, their research leads them into the world of antique shops and the supernatural. Iva, a deformed man named Belian, and an antique owner named Sani seem to be involved in the mystery. Everything seems to revolve around a true incident that took place a century ago, when Norwegian explorer Carl Lumholtz traveled through central Borneo between 1913 and 1917 and photographed some tribal women.

For 10 years, Five Flavours Film Festival has been presenting the best cinema from Asia, its meanings and contexts. Initially, the Festival focused solely on Vietnamese films, but it evolved to become a yearly review of the cinema of East and Southeast Asia, the only such event in the country.
The 10th edition is held in Warsaw, on November 16-23 (Muranów and Kinoteka cinemas), and in Wrocław on November 18-24 (New Horizons Cinema).
This year’s edition of Five Flavours is the biggest in history – it presents over 40 productions. The program combines artistic and commercial cinema, allowing the audience to experience the best Asian films have to offer. On the one hand, there are the intimate stories with a social angle, on the other – fresh, innovative blockbusters, filled with the sheer joy of cinematic creation, attracting millions of viewers in their homelands.

Something’s happening in Kuala Lampur—something that cannot be explained. Deaths in the vein of Bryan Fuller’s gorgeously ornate displays of murder from “Hannibal” have arrived without any leads or earthly reason. Detective Man (Shaheizy Sam) jokes that his forensic photographer needs to see a witch doctor after collapsing at the scene of the first body, but he may not be far off the truth. Adam’s (Iedil Putra) spell was odd, conjured by the light or power of a glass negative found underneath the suspended cadaver covered in rare bird feathers and external veins. The second body had one too and the effect remains the same. Something about these killings is calling to him. Adam wants to just sit it out, but fate has other ideas.

Malaysia has been steadily upping their game when it comes to action films in recent years with a strong of glossy, high budget efforts making big waves at the local box office. And I think it's fair to say that Ghaz Abu Bakar's Polis Evo is poised to be the latest to make a splash when it hits Malaysian screens in September. The Cicak Man 3 helmer reunites with seemingly ubiquitous Malaysian comedy star Zizan Razak - who seriously seems to be in every major Malaysian film of the last five or ten years - and pairs him with Shaheizy Sam for an odd couple action comedy that skews very heavily towards the action end of the spectrum. The freshly released trailer for this one -...

What’s better than watching angry people beat the crap out of one another in a plethora of different settings? Watching Malaysian action heroes attempt comedy during high speed car chases. All of these bases seem to be covered in the upcoming action/comedy “Kongsi”. Trying to catch the subtitles as your brain soaks in all of the high-octane madness is quite difficult, so I highly recommend repeat viewings. Of course, I’ve watched the damned thing five times, and I still forget to read them. Go figure. This synopsis should help set the mood: Kongsi focuses on the investigation done by Asp Shariff (Fizo Omar) towards the killing of triad members in Kuala Lumpur. Various triad members are in shambles when they discover the presence of a hired killer Tumulak (Shaheizy Sam), who committed the killings to settle his debt. Asps Shariff is unable to pinpoint who’s to...
