My first reaction when I was offered the lead in Subham was pure excitement. I’ve always wanted to work with Praveen Sir ever since I watched Cinema Bandi during the Covid lockdown. I vividly remember watching it with my dad, and both of us were in awe of the director’s brilliance and the film’s depth. It was in that moment that I knew I wanted to work with Praveen Kandregula, sir, one day. Samantha’s film has opened 34% lower than Tamannaah Bhatia’s recent disaster at the box office. Odela 2 earned 85 lakh on the opening day at the box office, and was one of the lowest openings for a Telugu film.

On the opening day, Friday, May 9, Subham earned only 65 lakh at the box office. This is less than most of the opening days of Tollywood and better than only three films Sarangapani Jathakam, Brahma Anandam and Jabilamma Neeku Antha Kopama.

Prabhas, Ram Charan, Ntr Jr, and now Ajith, Naani, and Suriya have come a cropper with their latest releases. Is it their overconfidence and weak scripts that have caused this traffic jam of failures?

It can now be revealed with certainty that Naani’s Telugu Hit: The Third Case has done reasonably well, though not well enough to be stamped as a hit, while Suriya’s Tamil Retro is a complete disaster.

Suriya urgently needs to refurbish his stock of scripts and to stop looking at a pan-India audience. One Pushpa or Baahubali proves nothing. Even Prabhas has not had a pan-India hit after Baahubali.

Congratulations, your debut film Shubham is an eerie laugh riot. What made you take up the challenge of turning producer at this stage of your career when you are rocking as an actor?

You can’t expect meaningful change without taking risks, and I don’t think I’ve ever shied away from taking risks. More often than not, those risks have paid off, so after fifteen years of learning and being an actor; I believe I’ve gained the kind of insight and experience needed to be sure of the stories I want to tell. My production house, Tralala Moving Pictures, has an incredible team.
