John Wick-esque K-Drama Becomes Instant Netflix Global Hit Just Days After Release
Image
When it was first released in 2014, John Wick was an entirely new type of action movie. While it initially appeared to be a standard but original thriller, it quickly proved to be anything but. With Keanu Reeves showcasing his unique gun-fu fighting style, the franchise drew in enthralled audiences by building on its unique lore and exceptional fight choreography. Across five movies, including the recent spinoff From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, it has earned over $1 billion at the worldwide box office.

While the most recent mainline John Wick movie implied that Wick would not return, John Wick: Chapter 5 has been confirmed and is in active development. Reeves will be working alongside director and creator Chad Stahelski again, as the two add another story to Wick's tragic life. It is coming after two major spinoffs were already released, including Ballerina and the TV miniseries, The Continental. As Chapter 5 remains in development,...

Netflix's New Action Thriller Series Hailed as 'Next John Wick' Rises on Streaming Charts
Image
Netflix's new action thriller series, slightly reminiscent of the John Wick franchise, is making its way up the streaming charts.

Per FlixPatrol, as of June 14th, 2025, Netflix's new action thriller series, Mercy for None, has climbed its way to No.10 of the platform's most-streamed programs. While the highly rated Season 3 of Ginny & Georgia still comfortably sits at the No.1 spot, the South Korean series has placed on the chart shortly after its June 6th release, falling just behind Dept. Q and Animal Kingdom.

Based on the webtoon Plaza Wars: Mercy for None by Oh Se-hyung and Kim Geun-Tae, the series stars So Ji-sub as the former gang enforcer Nam Gi-jun. However, not unlike John Wick, Gi-jun is forced back into a life of crime after his brother, Nam Gi-Seok, played by Lee Joon-hyuk, is murdered. The series follows Gi-jun's search for answers as well as revenge. Mercy for None...

‘Vigilante’ Kdrama Plot, Story, Release Date, Cast, Characters & Where To Stream
Image
With Nam Joo-Hyuk enlisted in the military, we were under the impression that we’d have to wait two whole years to see him again, but here we have a new TV show with the actor as the leading man. The actor is known for his slice-of-life roles that are both adorable and emotional, and he does a fantastic job of balancing pain and humor that really makes you root for him, whatever the role may demand. The actor’s last show was Twenty-Five Twenty-One, which was widely beloved, even though the ending received a lot of backlash for being too realistic. Vigilante will see the mostly romantic actor in a completely new light, and we’re excited to see him try something new. The show is based on a webtoon of the same name and follows a very “Batman” tale, where a young man sets out to take revenge...

Film Review: Baseball Girl (2020) by Choi Yoon-tae
Image
Female-centric sports dramas often bring a different angle to the tried and tested formula. Even Korean productions like “Forever the Moment” and “As One”, for example, have managed to entertain by focusing on female characters and stories. Choi Yoon-tae's debut feature “Baseball Girl” also attempts to do the same, setting the story in the often-visited world of Korean baseball.

“Baseball Girl” is available from Echelon Studios

Joo Soo-in used to be a star pitcher in middle school, the first female baseball player in 20 years. Since then though, the realities of high school and pro league baseball have held her back as she sees her teammates, even those with lesser abilities, progress forward while she stays where she is. Her situation with her family is also at a boiling point, a father who doesn't bring in any money usually at loggerheads with a mother who just wants Soo-in to accept that...

Darren Boyd, Stephen Merchant, Clare Perkins, Eleanor Tomlinson, Jessica Gunning, and Rhianne Barreto in The Outlaws (2021)
Film Review: The Roundup: No Way Out (2023) by Lee Sang-yong
Darren Boyd, Stephen Merchant, Clare Perkins, Eleanor Tomlinson, Jessica Gunning, and Rhianne Barreto in The Outlaws (2021)
It all started back in 2017 with “The Outlaws” (known as “Crime City” locally), the South Korean crime film starring Ma Dong-seok (Don Lee) as detective Ma Seok-do. It took five years before its sequel, “The Roundup” (“Crime City 2”) came out and it went on to become the highest grossing film of 2022 in South Korea, taking in over US$101million. A third installment, another smash hit, “The Roundup: No Way Out” (“Crime City 3”) quickly followed a year later with Ma returning as the beast detective leading a new team fighting more crime again.

It has been seven years since the events of the previous film, and detective Ma, after his promotion, now works for the Metropolitan Investigation Unit. While investigating the death of a woman believed to be a suicide case, he learns from her autopsy that she has in fact died from an overdose and a new drug known as Hiper is the cause.

The Roundup: No Way Out Review: Don Lee Fights Familiar Crime in Korea's Streets
Image
In 2017, the first installment of a franchise (often called Crime City) was released, one that has broken records in South Korea: The Outlaws. When it came out, it became one of the best-selling R-rated movies in the country; when the sequel, The Roundup, came out in 2022, the series was elevated to all-new heights. It was the third-highest-grossing South Korean movie in the country’s history, and the country's first release since Parasite to have over 10 million viewers watch the film in only 25 days. Now, in 2023, a third edition to the franchise is being released in South Korea and abroad: The Roundup: No Way Out. A fourth movie is scheduled to come out in theaters in 2024.

Don Lee, also known as Ma Dong-seok, stars in every film of the franchise as Ma Seok-do. Lee Sang-yong, who directed The Roundup in 2022, returns for The Roundup: No Way Out, which also features Lee Joon-hyuk as the antagonist,...
