Else Movie Ending Explained And Spoilers: What Becomes Of Anx?
Image
Body horror is a genre that can be repulsive at the surface with its graphic images and indifference to blood, gore, and violence. There have been films like the Saw franchise, which commercially made the genre accessible, garnering a somewhat niche following worldwide. However, for its sheer power of creating a language through impossible images, body horror was all along harboring the potential to become a genre that can house symbolism, dystopia, and even altered perceptions. In Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future we see the human body as a vessel for evolution, art, and utility. It is a radical shift for a genre that used to deal with surface-level graphic violence to evolve into one heavy with symbolism that wishes to be interpreted. The French horror-fantasy film Else is quite a mature addition to the genre in terms of how it approaches its protagonist’s psychology and pairs it...

Prince Harry’s African Charity Linked To Numerous Human Rights Abuses Carried Out By Park Rangers
Image
Prince Harry’s African charity, called African Parks, has been linked to numerous human rights abuses carried out by park rangers.

African Parks Issued A Formal Apology To The Victims

The Duke of Sussex was President of the charity from 2017 until 2023, when he was promoted to the governing board of directors.

An investigation conducted by the Mail, in January of last year, discovered evidence of abuse in the rainforest by guards working for the conservation organization who subjected indigenous people to a bevy of crimes, including rape, torture and beatings.

The charity admitted to these abuses that took place in the Odzala-Kokoua National Park, which African Parks manages.

These findings are a fresh blow to Harry after his Sentable charity became immersed in scandal when he resigned from the board, along with co-founder Prince Seeiso of Lethoso. The board of trustees also quit.

Chairwoman Sophie Chandauka accused Harry of harassment and bullying,...

What Does Otokonoko Mean in Senpai Is an Otokonoko? Title and Meaning Explained

What Does Otokonoko Mean in Senpai Is an Otokonoko? Title and Meaning Explained - Main Image

Senpai Is an Otokonoko is a romance and coming-of-age series that stars an anime character who says he’s an "otokonoko." Makoto Hanaoka dresses and behaves like a girl, but what does "otokonoko" mean in Japanese and in the series?

What Does Otokonoko Mean in Japanese?

In Japanese, the word “otokonoko” refers to “boy, male child, or baby boy.”

In other words, otokonoko, in its most straightforward meaning, directly translates to “boy” in English and is commonly used in everyday Japanese without any additional cultural or subcultural connotations.

However, in the realms of anime and manga, the word “otokonoko” has taken on a more nuanced meaning, as it has become a Japanese anime slang for male characters who dress and look like girls, which most of the anime community interestingly labels as “trap” characters.

When Drake and Kendrick Lamar decided to go at each other, we knew that there was a chance for low blows; we just didn’t know we’d end up subterranean. The four tracks they exchanged on May 3 and 4 — Kendrick’s “Meet the Grahams” and “Not Like Us,” as well as Drake’s “Family Matters” and “The Heart Pt. 6” — have taken their rift into a dark place. Drake is calling Kendrick a domestic abuser, and Kendrick is calling Drake a pedophile. Now, we’re wondering how a war that was...

The Results Are In: Kendrick Lamar Won the Great Rap War
Image
We know Kendrick Lamar and Drake will throw more shots, levy more seedy allegations, and might even drop more all-out diss songs from here. But the bulk of the war has been fought, and the crown goes to Compton. In hindsight, the way Drake poked the bear with Instagram Stories provocations and his “Taylor Made” freestyle seems masochistic. Over the past week, Lamar hit Drake with a relentless volley of diss songs that comprehensively dismantled his opponent’s character and, with “Not Like Us,” may make him the punchline of the summer.

A Reminder for Drake and Others: Tory Lanez Is Not a Martyr
Image
Drake compels the masses like a seasoned advertising director. He knows sharing something as simple as a new hairdo will strangle social media for days on end. So when he called for Tory Lanez’s freedom on his Instagram story, he knew it would garner similar visibility as activists screaming “Free Meek Mill” from the streets of Philadelphia. On Monday, Drake posted a picture of Tory and “3 You,” a version of “Free You” where the three were set to represent open handcuffs.

“Free [Insert Person”] is standard cultural parlance in communities of color.

‘Hustlers’ (2024) Review: The Miniseries Is Vibrant, But Its Reliance On Cliche Ideas Brings Its Downfall
Image
Any topic that can seize the attention of the audience is rare these days. We used to make aspirational stories where there were clearly defined roles for the hero and the villain. Then came the relatable phase of storytelling, where mundane stories were being told with such care that the audience could see their daily struggles in them. The new miniseries Hustlers wants to combine the two approaches to storytelling. It’s a story about an ordinary boy who hustles his way to the top, hence the name. It’s an aspirational story, as everyone connects to a ‘hero’ figure who fights his way through and succeeds in whatever endeavor he aspires to. But keeping in with the trends, Hustlers tries to keep it relatable, giving us characters that are so well known to the Indian middle class.

We have the insanely authoritarian dad who compares his two kids and...

Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga in Loving (2016)
TIFF Review: The Peasants is a Visually Breathtaking Misfire from the Directors of Loving Vincent
Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga in Loving (2016)
After 2017’s Loving Vincent and Toronto International Film Festival world premiere The Peasants, it is clear that Dk Welchman and Hugh Welchman have developed a gorgeously distinct, personal, ludicrously involved style of filmmaking. Loving Vincent, a clever biography of Vincent Van Gogh, was sold as “the world’s first fully painted feature film,” and indeed it was. The painting process returns in The Peasants, an adaptation of Władysław Reymont’s early 1900s, Nobel Prize–winning novel. A staggering 40,000 frames of film were painted to bring The Peasants to life.

That is an incredible achievement, one that should give the filmmakers and all involved in the production a sense of pride. Unfortunately, watching the finished product inspires difficult questions. Was it worth it? Does the final product warrant the years of painstaking labor involved? Both questions must be answered with a firm no. The Peasants is a visually breathtaking, dramatically inert misfire.

Survivor’s Jeff Probst Explains Knowledge Is Power Advantage Rules
Image
The post-covid era of Survivor is packed with new twists, and host Jeff Probst has found himself explaining the "Knowledge Is Power" advantage to the show's fans. Survivor season 43, episode 9, called “What About the Big Girls,” had viewers confused. James Jones went home with the "Knowledge Is Power" advantage in his pocket. However, he could have used it for Noelle Lambert’s "Steal a Vote" advantage, after she announced at Tribal Council that she was using it. According to Jeff Probst, this is not possible.

Survivor's "Knowledge Is Power" advantage allows a player at Tribal Council to ask another player if they have an idol or advantage. If so, the "Knowledge Is Power" holder becomes the new owner. Jeff clarified to Entertainment Weekly that the "Knowledge Is Power" advantage must be used before the other player announces that they are using their idol or advantage. In other words, as...

Why Survivor Fans Think Jeanine Is The Unluckiest Player
Image
Luck is a key element to a winning game of Survivor, and unfortunately, Jeanine Zheng doesn't have it. As the jury phase begins for the Gaia tribe, it has become apparent to fans that Jeanine is the season's unluckiest player. Even when good fortune comes her way, it is quickly squandered in ways not previously seen on Survivor.

Fans have taken to social media to discuss exactly what makes Jeanine unlucky. Reddit user Eniotnacram95 created a thread breaking down, episode by episode, all the moments that haven't gone her way, beginning with episode 5, "Stop With All the Niceness," when she risks her vote and subsequently loses it. Following Survivor 43's unpredictable twist in episode 6, "Mergatory," Jeanine was on the winning side and immune to the upcoming tribal council. Unfortunately, her closest ally, Elisabeth "Elie" Scott, over-strategized and not only got herself voted out, but also dragged Jeanine to the bottom...

‘Survivor 43’ power rankings post-merge: Karla and Jesse are at the top (and off the radar)
Image
Following the trajectory of seasons 41 and 42, “Survivor 43” enters the home stretch of the game this Wednesday when the final 11 players will begin voting each other out and onto the jury. Only three players will sit in the final seats at the last tribal council, meaning eight others will take their place on the jury that decides the winner. This stage of the game is defined by individual immunity, trust in what alliance you’ve built, who plays what advantage when, and padding your résumé with jury-impressing moves.

Two weeks ago we delivered our first power rankings of the season, naming Karla Cruz Godoy, Cody Assenmacher and Sami Layadi as the top players from each of the three original tribes entering the merge. All three remain in the game, but our assessment of who has built the best path to the final tribal council has changed. Take a look below at...

Why Survivor's Baka Tribe Is In The Worst Position After The Merge
Image
Baka is the worst-positioned tribe after the merge on Survivor 43. After voting out Morriah Young in the first elimination, the tribe has remained strong in challenges. However, their social game is a much different situation. While the tribe tried to appear open with each other, many competitors were keeping secrets and playing multiple sides. Once the merge came into play, the underlying tension in the tribe came to the surface for the Coco and Vesi tribes to see right before the tribal council.

Before the merge, many viewers would assume that Baka would be in the best position out of Survivor 43’s three featured tribes considering they had a numerical advantage. However, Baka was arguably the most divided tribe before the merger. Jeanine Zheng and Elie Scott did not want to work with Mike Gabler, and the feelings were mutual. While Sami Layadi and Owen Knight appeared to be leaning toward working with Gabler,...

‘Survivor 43’ deleted scene: Baka tribe confused by tree mail message — ‘Did we make the merge?’ [Watch]
Image
During the sixth episode of “Survivor 43,” viewers saw how the Coco and Vesi tribes reacted to their tree mail messages telling them to “drop your buffs.” But what about Baka? CBS has now released a secret scene in which Mike “Gabler” Gabler, Owen Knight, Sami Layadi, Elisabeth “Elie” Scott and Jeanine Zheng read their parchment and react in understandable confusion. In fact, Gabler even asks what everyone at home was wondering: “Did we make the merge?” Watch the “Survivor 43” deleted scene video above.

The clip starts with Jeanine bringing the tree mail message to the group of three guys on the morning of Day 12. Elie is still sleeping, so they all go to the shelter to wake her up and read it together as a group.

Elie Scott (‘Survivor 43’ exit interview): ‘I think it was a good move on them’
Image
While Jeanine Zheng was left stunned by the elimination of her closest ally Elisabeth “Elie” Scott on Wednesday’s sixth episode of “Survivor,” Elie was in good spirits, exclaiming, “They got me!” Read her “Survivor 43” exit interview below.

As a confident and strategic player from the jump, Elie fully admitted that it wasn’t dumb for the newly merged players to vote her out. She said, “I think it was a good move on them — I had a lot more game left to play.” Out of the gate at the merge, Elie had more intel than many of the other players, already knowing who at her former Baka camp had the advantages and fiercely aligned with the Baka idol holder, Jeanine. She also learned through conversation with Noelle Lambert that Cody Assenmacher likely had the idol from Vesi.

‘Survivor 43’: Breaking down the game and contestants as we head into the ‘merge’
Image
After the shocking blindside of Geo Bustamante on the fifth episode of “Survivor 43,” viewers were blindsided themselves when the “Next time on Survivor” promo showed all three tribes coming together on the same beach and what looked like an upcoming challenge for a potential “merge.” It’s an odd and early turn of events since only five contestants have been eliminated, but fans can remember from watching the last two seasons that making the merge will not come easy to the players as they will likely have to earn their way to it by surviving at least a vote. With Season 43 no longer having the controversial hourglass twist and promising another game-changing twist to making the merge, it will be interesting to see what events will occur in the sixth episode. But now that the players have all come together, let’s break down the three tribes and the odds...

‘Survivor 43’ sneak peek video: It’s ‘Drop your buffs’ time, but Karla remains skeptical [Watch]
Image
It’s “Drop your buffs” time on “Survivor 43,” aka the merge, and in CBS’s newly released sneak peek video (watch above), the Coco tribe reacts to the news after reading it via tree-mail. While the entire tribe celebrates what the future may hold, Karla Cruz Godoy remains (smartly) skeptical. She tells the camera, “While it’s exciting, yes, oh my god, the merge is coming … it’s ‘Survivor,’ right? And for the last two seasons we’ve seen that the merge doesn’t come easy.”

What she’s referring to is that during “Survivor 41” and “Survivor 42,” the castaways had to earn their way into the merge for the first time ever. First, they drew random colored rocks and one person with a grey rock had to go to Exile Island and live alone. Then, the remaining players competed in a challenge where the winners would earn a merge...
