I don’t think I could ever imagine living in a world like the one we’re confronted with in Netflix’s Korean drama, Trigger. While we’ve seen violence play out often (I could even say more than often) in Korean media, it has almost never been with guns. Korea’s always been strictly anti-gun, but this new drama imagines a scenario where free access to guns is given to all residents, never mind their age, gender, nationality, or occupation. Terrifying, I know. But it’s not just the visual of Koreans getting massacred in school for bullying that is absolutely bizarre and jarring; it’s the way the story plays out, too. The 10-episode drama certainly comes across as a dystopian nightmare where everyone has a “trigger.” Something that pushes you to do the worst thing on your mind. Despite having one main plot, the series follows an anthological template,...

What happens when an object of immense power is introduced into an environment that has no context for it? Trigger poses this question with unnerving focus. The series opens in a South Korea we recognize—a society of immense pressure and ambition—but drops a foreign element into its heart: an influx of illegal guns.
In a nation with virtually no gun crime, these weapons find their way into the hands of ordinary, stressed-out people. This is not a straightforward action series. It is a slow-motion study of a social fabric tearing apart. The show’s title cleverly points to the mechanical function of a firearm and, more importantly, to the psychological breaking point within every person.
A Society on the Verge

In the first moments of Trigger, a billboard announces that South Korea is one of the safest countries in the world, largely because of a ban on firearms. Why, then, are military-grade automatic weapons being couriered to unsuspecting Korean citizens, who, in turn, take their unhappiness out on others? When a kind police officer with a traumatic past begins investigating these seemingly random violent crimes, he crosses paths with an overeager citizen sleuth who sheds light on a greater societal evil at play.

Nothing is more currently prevalant or widely explored than serial killers and true crime in today's popular culture — here are the best K-dramas with a serial killer, ranked from worst to best. Fabricated serial killers or real-life documentaries of famed murderers seem to catch audiences' attention. Just as there are popular crime dramas centered around serial killers, there are also K-dramas that do the same. Fans might get hooked on this genre of crime K-dramas and will find it hard to stop binge-watching.
While most of the best K-dramas on Netflix and the like are romantic endeavors, Korean thrillers are equally renowned and beloved among K-drama fans. A Korean drama with a serial killer provides an extra dose of high-stakes thrills and chills, something that K-dramas aren't generally known for, but excel at nonetheless. These K-dramas are riddled with riveting storylines, chilling cases, and the hunt to find the culprit responsible for taking innocent lives.
