WTFilms Chief on Move into Production With ‘Perpetrator,’ Starring Alicia Silverstone, Xavier Gens’ ‘Farang’
Image
Over the past 12 months, Paris-based sales agent WTFilms has produced two features: “Perpetrator,” by Jennifer Reeder (“Knives and Skin”), which will world premiere in the Panorama section at Berlin Film Festival, and Xavier Gens’ thriller “Farang,” which is co-financed and repped by Studiocanal.

“Perpetrator,” starring Kiah McKirnan (“Mare of Easttown”) and Alicia Silverstone, is about an impulsive teenage girl living in a town where young women are being abducted. It is produced by WTFilms’ topper Gregory Chambet, and Derek Bishé for Divide/Conquer.

In December, Shudder, AMC Networks’ horror/thriller streaming service, acquired U.S. rights.

Reeder calls it “dark but feminine, a nuanced noir, a grrrl power take on modern horror.” Chambet says there is strong audience interest in feminine horror films, with powerful female leads and highlights the performances of Alicia Silverstone as Aunt Hildie and Kiah McKirnan as wild child Jonny, who gains shape-shifting powers when she...

Bella Ortiz's Role in "American Carnage" Confronts White Latinx Privilege
Image
"I had a little bit of hesitation when approached with the role of Micah," Bella Ortiz tells Popsugar about her casting in the new comedy-horror "American Carnage." The film sort of feels like a Latinx version of Jordan Peele's "Get Out," and Ortiz's character has one of the more surprising arcs. She had auditioned for another role but decided to go for the part of Micah despite her misgivings. She went for it, noting, "these kinds of movies, they don't get made often, especially independent features." And in the end, she was proud to be part of a majority-Latinx team with lots of camaraderie. Everyone who worked on the film was "committed to being a part of telling this story and highlighting the important issues that were happening."

"As a kid, I felt like I was neither here nor there."

"American Carnage" delves into immigration politics, Latinx identity,...

'American Carnage' Horror Movie Director Diego Hallivis, Allen Maldonado and Bella Ortiz Discuss Politics Behind Plot
Eric Dane, Jorge Diaz, Allen Maldonado, Jenna Ortega, Bella Ortiz, and Jorge Lendeborg Jr. in American Carnage (2022)
The U.S. government rounds up the American-born children of undocumented immigrants and sends them to work at a retirement home but things are not what they seem when they arrive in the new horror-thriller American Carnage. The premise sounds far-fetched and director Diego Hallivis tells CineMovie the film executives pushed back on the idea but then America changed for the worse and American Carnage was made. The director and two of the stars, Allen Maldonado and Bella Ortiz discuss their journey in making the relevant film.

‘American Carnage’ Review
Image
Stars: Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Yumarie Morales, Brett Cullen, Jenna Ortega, Jorge Diaz, Bella Ortiz, Allen Maldonado, Eric Dane, Troy James | Written by Diego Hallivis, Julio Hallivis | Directed by Diego Hallivis

Opening with a voiceover and montage of political speeches and news broadcasts on the topic of immigration, American Carnage immediately introduces us to Jp and his sister Lily. She’s just been accepted into college, but what should be a happy family celebration is interrupted as an Ice Swat team kicks in the door.

And here we run into a major issue with American Carnage’s plotting. The raid is one of many called for under an executive order signed by Governor Haper Finn. Immigration policy and enforcement is a federal matter, an executive order by a state governor would have no force. And even if it did, Ice is a federal agency, it doesn’t take orders from state governments.

Frightfest 2018: 10 Questions with ‘Hell Is Where The Home Is’ director Orson Obolowitz
You’ve done every film related job from producer and actor to cinematographer and editor. Was directing always the goal?

Poverty dictates…I would just take any position I could and figure it out from there, especially when I made The Queen Of Hollywood Blvd. where I just didn’t have the budget and had to take on as many positions as I could. Directing was always the ultimate goal though. Funny enough, the genesis of Hell came from a job I had done years before when I was camera operating on a feature film The Ganzfeld Experiment. It was a crazy production, and my dad was the director. The line producer of Ganzfeld was Julio Hallivis. We became friends and stayed in touch. Cut to five years later, I show Julio my first film The Queen of Hollywood Blvd. and he says “Hey man, I got a script I think you will dig.

Review: ‘Curvature’ is Entertaining But Minor Sci-Fi
It’s been a week of grief and mourning for Helen (Lyndsy Fonseca) after finding her husband Wells (Noah Bean) dead by suicide at their secluded cabin. She’s dealing with his absence like anyone would by closing off spaces they shared together in hopes of avoiding too many easy triggers for memories that only bring sadness. Work should distract her during the day and Wells’ business partner Tomas (Glenn Morshower) continuing their secretive scientific research should honor his legacy. This doesn’t mean she’ll forget him, forgive him, or stop blaming herself for missing the signs of his pain, but they say life will eventually go on. What they don’t say, however, is that you just might awaken one morning with no recollection of multiple days since you fell asleep.

They don’t because that doesn’t happen in the real world — at least not without the help of some heavy drugs.

Q&A: Curvature Director Diego Hallivis on Working with Linda Hamilton and Making a Character-Centric Time Travel Movie
You may know her best as Sarah Connor in the first two Terminator movies, but in the new film Curvature, Linda Hamliton experiences a different kind of time travel adventure in her co-starring role as Florence. With Curvature out now in theaters and on VOD platforms from Screen Media, we caught up with director Diego Hallivis for a new Q&A feature to discuss working with Hamilton, making a movie where time travel enhances the characters as much as the plot, and two different genre movies he has in the works.

Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Diego, and congratulations on your new movie, Curvature! When you read Brian DeLeeuw’s screenplay for the film, what made you excited to bring this story to life on screen?

Diego Hallivis: Thank you for the support! Two things jumped out at me when I first read Curvature.

Linda Hamilton in Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)
'Curvature': Film Review
Linda Hamilton in Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)
If the prospect of watching Linda Hamilton in a sci-fi thriller involving a character who travels through time to prevent a murder sounds exciting, my advice is to rent one of the Terminator movies. They are far preferable to Curvature, Diego Hallivis' low-budget effort exploiting a similar idea only with drastically duller results.

Until better headache remedies are invented, there really needs to be a respite from time travel movies that generally prove far more confusing than fun. Such is the case with this film, about a woman, still grieving over the recent suicide of her husband, who gets a...

Lyndsy Fonseca in First Trailer for Time Travel Indie Film 'Curvature'
"Why do you think Wells was so secretive about his work?" Screen Media has unveiled a trailer for indie sci-fi thriller Curvature, which premiered at the Sitges Film Festival last year. This time travel film follows a young engineer named Helen Phillips, played by Lyndsy Fonseca (who you will recognize from Kick-Ass or "Agent Carter"), distraught by her husband's suicide. He had been developing a time travel prototype. She wakes up one morning and gets a phone call from herself, which sets things in motion as she tries to figure out what's going on. Co-starring Linda Hamilton, Glenn Morshower, Alex Lanipekun, Zach Avery, Noah Bean. I saw this at Sitges and unfortunately it's not good. It has all the right ingredients, including a cool-looking time travel machine, but just doesn't amount to much and is instantly forgettable. Check it out. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Diego Hallivis' Curvature,...

Curvature Trailer Unlocks a Time Traveling Murder Mystery
Screen Media Films has released the first trailer and poster for Curvature, which puts an interesting twist on the time travel genre. The thriller stars Lyndsy Fonseca as a scientist, who must break into a top-secret facility in order to travel back in time and prevent a murder after receiving a mysterious phone call from herself. While we won't know for sure until next month when it hits theaters, this movie could be one of the first sleeper hits of 2018.

The film had its world premiere at the Shriekfest Film Festival in October, where it won Best Sci-Fi Feature, followed by a screening at the Stiges Film Festival. Screen Media Films has slated the film for release on February 23, 2018, in limited release and through on demand formats. While late February doesn't often produce box office blockbusters, there are four high-profile movies opening in wide release that weekend. Paramount's Annihilation,...

Jason Hurt and Phil Haus in Game Time (2011)
DVD Review: Game Time
Jason Hurt and Phil Haus in Game Time (2011)
Title: Game Time Directed by: Diego Hallivis Starring: Phil Haus, Jason Hurt, María Didomenico Running Time 101 minutes, Rated PG13 Vance and his mother leave an abusive, alcoholic father and move to New York to make a fresh start. Vance makes friends with Jules, an aspiring ball player whose dream is to get his mother and siblings out of poverty. Together, they enter dueling ball tournaments to raise cash and earn court prestige. Not a fan of this film. The acting was next to horrible and the dialogue was eye-rolling-ly bad. The only positive I can point out is that it’s a good tutorial for young men who are of...

DVD Releases: 'The Duel'
At first glance, Diego Hallivis' The Duel (2011) appears to be just another run of the mill, wrong side of the tracks, teen-movie; not-so-bad bad-boy moves to new school, gets involved in a sporting contest with dangerous consequences and to get the girl kind of drivel perfectly tailored to the talents (if that’s the appropriate term) of someone like Channing Tatum.
