Why The Equalizer 3 Director Cut Romantic Scenes With Denzel Washington

The Equalizer 3 director Antoine Fuqua confirms star Denzel Washington almost had a more romantic subplot in the action thriller but opted to drop the idea.

Speaking with NME, Fuqua revealed there were flirtatious scenes featuring Washington's vigilante character, Robert McCall, and local cafe owner Aminah (Gaia Scodellaro) while frequenting southern Italy. However, Fuqua cut these scenes as he felt the romantic development was a "betrayal" to McCall's late wife while also getting lukewarm feedback in test screenings when those scenes were shown.

“There was more [to Robert and Aminah’s relationship in the script], but the audience didn’t want to see Robert McCall in love… We did a test screening and they really felt like it was a betrayal of the wife, you know, so we decided to pull that back," he said.
