Image
Rich Peppiatt’s drama Kneecap, which made it onto short list for Best International Feature Film for the 97th Academy Awards earlier this week, has scooped the top Crystal Arrow for best film at France’s Les Arcs Film Festival.

The prize, awarded in partnership with state broadcaster France Télévisions, comes with a digital promotional campaign worth €20,000 to support the theatrical release in France next summer by local distributor Wayna Pitch.

The picture also won Best Original Music, with Michael ‘Mikey J’ Asante winning the €1,000 prize donated by the French music rights management body Sacem.

The jury – announced as a collective without a president – comprised actor Pio Marmaï, writer Delphine de Vigan, director and producer Peter Kerekes, actor Céline Sallette, singer, actor and producer Sofiane Zermani and composer Herdís Stafánsdóttir.

In a third prize, decided by eight local high school students, the film also won the Young Jury Prize. The...

Disney+ To Tackle Momfluencer Malaise With French Original ‘Les Enfants Sont Rois,’ Euthanasia With Doc Series ‘Lambert v. Lambert’
Image
Disney+ will move forward on two new French series, tackling questions of euthanasia with “Lambert v. Lambert,” and intimacy in the social media age with the literary thriller “Les enfants sont rois.”

Adapted from a recent page-turner by “Based on a True Story” author Delphine de Vigan, “Les enfants sont rois” (“The Children Are Kings”) follows a reality-tv has-been turned mommy vlogger who fills her social media feeds with daily updates about her two precocious children. When her older daughter disappears and is thought kidnapped, the bereft momfluencer faces a police investigation that calls into question the very existence of child.

Described in one review as a mix of “Madame Bovary” and “Nineteen Eighty-Four” that plays as a “thriller, essay and court drama,” the caustic novel spans three decades, beginning with the rise of reality TV in 2001 and ending with an epigraph attributed to Stephen King: “We had a...

Marion Cotillard and Ayline Aksoy-Etaix in Angel Face (2018)
‘Angel Face’ Producer Sets New Projects (Exclusive)
Marion Cotillard and Ayline Aksoy-Etaix in Angel Face (2018)
Carole Lambert’s recently launched Windy Prods., which has the Marion Cotillard-starrer “Angel Face” playing in Un Certain Regard, is set to produce Joséphine Derobe’s fantasy feature “Vv,” Eric Capitaine’s “Les bonnes actions” and Manuel Schapira’s “Tropique de la violence.”

Although she tries to remain optimistic, her return to normal life turns nightmarish as she undergoes rehabilitation therapy using virtual reality. The movie will mark the feature debut of Derobe, who is a well-known French 3D and Vr artist.

Shapira’s “Tropique de la Violence” is co-written with French novelist Delphine de Vigan, whose “Based on a True Story” was adapted into a film by Roman Polanski.

‘Based on a True Story’ Trailer: Eva Green Weaves a Web of Deceit in Polanski-Assayas Thriller
“A psychological thriller directed by Roman Polanski and co-written by Polanski and Olivier Assayas – elevator pitches don’t get much more promising than that,” we said in our review of Based on a True Story from Cannes. “Sadly, the lackluster outcome proves there’s no guaranteed recipe for success.” Despite being a disappointment at the festival earlier this year, I’m still intrigued to see Eva Green star in a Polanski film, especially one scripted by Assayas.

Ahead of a release in France this December, the first trailer has now landed. We added in our review, “Based on a True Story, adapted from the prize-winning novel by Delphine de Vigan, revisits territory Polanski has mined time and again over the course of his long career. Perhaps too many times, as the film feels like the work of an author thoroughly bored with his material, a sentiment impossible not to share as a viewer.

First Trailer For Roman Polanski’s ‘Based On A True Story’ Starring Eva Green [Watch]
In a week where Louis C.K. debuted at Tiff his new movie “I Love You Daddy” (read our review here), which is in part about a filmmaker who was accused of child-molesting yet is still widely celebrated, it seems only appropriate that we get the trailer for a new Roman Polanski movie.

The director’s first since “Venus In Furs” is a thriller based on Delphine de Vigan’s novel, co-written with Olivier Assayas, in which a novelist (Emmanuelle Seigner, Polanski’s real-life partner of legal age) suffers from writer’s block, only to befriend a stranger (Eva Green) who becomes dangerously over-familiar.

Cannes Review: ‘Based on a True Story’ is an Uninspired Psychological Thriller from Roman Polanski
A psychological thriller directed by Roman Polanski and co-written by Polanski and Olivier Assayas – elevator pitches don’t get much more promising than that. Sadly, the lackluster outcome proves there’s no guaranteed recipe for success. Based on a True Story, adapted from the prize-winning novel by Delphine de Vigan, revisits territory Polanski has mined time and again over the course of his long career. Delphine (Emmanuelle Seigner) is a successful author who has just published a book that draws from her mother’s experience with mental illness. At a book signing, she meets Her (Eva Green – the press notes state her character is actually called Elle, as in the French original, whereas the English subtitles at the Cannes premiere put it as “Her…...

Michelle Pfeiffer and Eva Green at an event for Dark Shadows (2012)
The Polish filmmaker discussed his new film Based On A True Story, modern technology and “hangers-on”

Roman Polanski addressed questions on cinema’s future, technology’s role in modern life and the hunger for truth at the Cannes press conference for Based On A True Story, which premieres out of competition at the festival tonight.

On whether audience desire to go see films in cinemas or even Cannes itself might eventually fall victim to the rise of streaming services such as Netflix, the 83-year-old Polish filmmaker said: “I don’t believe there is a basic threat to cinema because I think people go to the movies not because there is better sound or better projection or better seats than they have in their homes, they go to the cinema because they can participate in an experience with the audience around them.”

“This has been the way throughout humanity, whether it’s a Greek theatre or a Roman...

‘Based on a True Story’ Review: Roman Polanski’s Latest Doesn’t Meet High Expectations — Cannes
Michelle Pfeiffer and Eva Green at an event for Dark Shadows (2012)
Four years after “Venus in Fur,” Roman Polanski returns with an adaptation of Delphine de Vigan’s “Based on a True Story,” a stylish but ultimately stiff collection of old tropes about writers and their audience, fiction vs. reality, and the Other that becomes you.

Offering little in the way of fresh material and mixing together influences such as “Misery,” “Single White Female,” and Polanski’s own “The Ghost Writer,” this sophisticated French/Polish two-hander is at least a good showcase for the two lead actresses — while the pairing of Polanski and “Personal Shopper” director Olivier Assayas, here solely on scriptwriting duty, does not quite deliver on its promise.

The story of a successful Parisian writer Delphine (Polanski’s wife Emmanuelle Seigner) on the verge of starting her new book, the film opens on a point-of-view shot of the author facing a sea of admirers at a signing event. Beneath a well-constructed facade of control,...

After some more court related issues seemingly delayed his long gestating project The Dreyfus Affair, Roman Polanski has commenced filming a much smaller but arguably more intriguing production, Based on a True Story, with Olivier Assayas (who was a notable screenwriter for Andre Techine before branching out as an auteur himself) adapting from a novel by Delphine de Vigan (who penned the script for the 2011 film You Will Be My Son, featuring a nasty little performance from Niels Arestrup).
