The Making Of Sketch's Charming Crayon Monsters Is Explained By Director
Image
Sketchis a singular new fantasy movie starring The Good Place's D'Arcy Carden and Veep's Tony Hale, with some unique special effects, and the director goes into the details of the CG process with other VFX artists. Sketch sees the crayon and chalk monsters drawn by young Amber (Bianca Bell) come to life when her sketchbook is accidentally dropped in a magical pond.

Director Seth Worley recently appeared in an episode of Corridor Crew on YouTube to delve into this movie's special effects with the channel's VFX experts. Worley states that he is "a director who does visual effects" and has a "ceiling" of what programs he is willing to learn to use properly, and worked with many other creators on Sketch.

"We did not have lots of money, and let’s find out if you can tell," Worley jokes. When they are watching the footage from Sketch of...

Interviews: Tony Hale, D’arcy Carden and more talk about their family fantasy film Sketch
Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Martha Plimpton, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Kerri Green, and Ke Huy Quan in The Goonies (1985)
The term “family friendly” is often a negative label for a lot of older audiences. Back in the day, movies aimed at younger viewers were a lot better than they are today. We don’t get very many movies like The Goonies, Flight of the Navigator, or any of the countless other action and comedy movies that fueled the kids of the 1980s and 1990s. While most films aimed at kids are animated these days, we occasionally get a movie that brings back the golden age of Amblin films. Sketch is one of those movies.

Sketch follows the Wyatt siblings, who recently lost their mother. Their dad, Taylor, struggles to keep the family together, which becomes even more difficult when daughter Amber’s grief-fueled drawings come to life. Now, giant monsters made of chalk and markers are running rampant in their town, and it is up to Amber, her brother Jack,...

‘It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley’ Breaks Out In Solid Indie Weekend – Specialty Box Office
Image
New independents from documentary It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley on the rising musician who died too young, to Kristin Scott Thomas’ directorial debut My Mother’s Wedding and quirky animated Boys Go To Jupiter, Cartuna’s first outing as a distributor, made a mark this weekend. The numbers don’t necessarily move the needle on summer box office given the proliferation of big ticket studio fare led by new entrants Weapons and Freakier Friday, but they do show moviegoer interest in a variety of fare.

Topping the indie film box office, Neon body horror Together by Michael Shanks starring Dave Franco and Alison Brie added $2.6 million in week 2 on 2,225 screens for a cume of $17.2 million at a no. 9 spot.

TIFF-premiering Sketch from Angel Studios, written and directed by Seth Worley, opened to a $2.5 million weekend on 2,157 screens for a cume of $5 million and a no. 10 spot for the adventure fantasy,...

‘Sketch’s Global Box Office Barely Makes a Dent for Angel Studios Despite 97% on Rotten Tomatoes
Image
The indie outfit Angel Studios has a history of hitting the target as far as its core demographic is concerned. The studio’s latest offering, the animation/live-action hybrid Sketch, was released to positive reviews and a strong audience reception this week. The movie is facing off at the box office against the Warner Bros. horror film Weapons, and the Disney sequel Freakier Friday. Both of these have also received positive reviews and immense fan support, which pushed them to exceed box office expectations. Sketch, on the other hand, barely found a spot on the top 10 list.

The movie grossed around $5 million in an extended five-day debut. Starring Tony Hale and D’Arcy Carden, it earned an A- grade from opening day audiences, according to the polling platform CinemaScore. This puts it in the same category as fellow children’s films Harold and the Purple Crayon, Tom & Jerry, and Space Jam: A New Legacy.

Sketch Review: Tony Hale and D’arcy Carden lead the best live-action family film in years
Image
Plot: Grief and creativity collide when a single dad, still reeling from the unexpected loss of his wife, navigates uncharted territory with his daughter, who is grappling with the sudden loss of her mother and retreats into her sketchbook drawing monsters as a way to cope with overwhelming emotions. When her sketches begin to come to life, strange and terrifying figures emerge, unleashing chaos on her small town. With the help of her father and a few loyal friends, she must learn to face her feelings and find healing within herself.

Review: Making movies about tough subjects like grief is challenging, but incorporating them into a kid-friendly film can be daunting. Sketch, the feature directorial debut from Seth Worley, aims to tell a story about grief and dealing with the loss of a close family member in a tale full of fantastical creatures. Combining live action with creatively animated monsters,...

Image
In a world dominated by blue-light-emitting devices, short-form social media and, in turn, dwindling attention spans, a family-friendly film about a child who processes trauma via unbridled imagination and artistic release is so inspiring (not a Skibidi Toilet reference in sight). After cutting his teeth on short films, commercials, and corporate videos, Sketch marks director Seth Worley’s first foray into feature films, writing and directing the creative and emotional look at how we channel grief. Funny, heartfelt, and insightful, Sketch is a winner by all measures.

Ten-year-old Amber (Bianca Bell) has taken to drawing increasingly violent sketches as her own personal form of therapy. His older son Jack (Kue Lawrence) is doing his best “protective older brother” routine, but he’s just a child himself and can only do so much.

Hilarious, heartfelt, and in conversation with larger conversations about morality and our place on Earth, The Good Place evolved a lot over its four-season run, as did its characters.

Led by a stellar ensemble cast including Kristen Bell, William Jackson Harper, D'Arcy Carden, Jameela Jamil, and Manny Jacinto, The Good Place dedicated time to developing all of its characters. The Good Place became a masterpiece at the end of season 1, but for actors like Jacinto, some of the best work came after this.

The soulmate pairings in The Good Place were a key piece of the story, and one of the most unexpected but delightful romantic storylines was the one between Jason (Jacinto) and Janet (Carden). While Janet wasn't human,...

Blessed be the comeback? ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ is on track to return to this major Emmy category for final season
Image
After being The Handmaid's Tale's only Emmy nomination for the fifth season, Elisabeth Moss is probably the show's best shot at being recognized for its sixth and final season this year. At the moment, Moss is in fifth place in Gold Derby's odds for Best Drama Actress, which is set to have five slots. But if the 2017 drama series champ gets a farewell hug from voters, don't be surprised to see it pop up in other races, including the acting category it once dominated unlike any other: Best Drama Guest Actress.

Up until the fifth season, the Hulu series had fielded at least one nominee in the category each time it was eligible. For the first season in 2017, it landed a lone nomination for Alexis Bledel, who prevailed. The following year, it tripled its Season 1 total with bids for Kelly Jenrette, Cherry Jones, and eventual winner Samira Wiley. While...

Elin Hilderbrand Gives Updates on Multiple Adaptations in the Works, ‘The Perfect Couple’ Season 2, and What Happened With ‘Summer of ’69’ and ‘The Identicals’ Series
Image
Elin Hilderbrand is opening up about her many books that are being adapted for the small and big screen. At Nantucket Film Festival’s “Flipping the Script: Bestsellers to Screen” panel on Sunday, Hilderbrand was joined by Jenna Lamia, the showrunner of “The Perfect Couple” and the team from the upcoming “Five-Star Weekend” series, writer and producer Bekah Brunstetter, UCP executive Jen Gwartz, NBCUniversal’s Lisa Katz and producer Sue Naegle.

“The Five-Star Weekend” is currently in production, starring Jennifer Garner, Regina Hall, Chloë Sevigny, Gemma Chan, D’Arcy Carden and Timothy Olyphant. But it’s one of many in the works for Hilderbrand, whose first adaptation was “The Perfect Couple.”

“Jenna and I are developing the ‘Winter Street’ series with Netflix,” she laughed on the panel before diving into other adaptations coming. “I have a project going with Universal, which I won’t talk about.”

Gwartz gave her permission to...

Julianne Nicholson dances her way to the top of the Comedy Guest Actress Emmy predictions for ‘Hacks’
Image
Looks like Dance Mom will boogie all the way to the Emmy podium.

Julianne Nicholson, who played the joyous (and drug-addicted) character on Hacks Season 4, now leads the Best Comedy Guest Actress race, taking down longtime frontrunner Jamie Lee Curtis for The Bear, who won last year. Nicholson's Dance Mom, aka Mary Alice, was recruited by Paul W. Downs' Jimmy and Megan Stalter's Kayla to appear on Late Night With Deborah Vance as a way for the talk show-within-a-show to gain a younger audience. At first, Jean Smart's Deborah was hesitant to let the untested woman take the stage, until she realized it would annoy Hannah Einbinder's Ava, and then all bets were off.

There's a new Hacks tonight, but I have not yet recovered from Julianne Nicholson dancing to Katy Perry's "Lifetimes" as Dance Mom in last week's episode. pic.twitter.com/SH3OPittFI

The ‘St. Denis Medical’ Team Pinpoint the Power of Mockumentaries: ‘Your Reactions Are the Punchline’ — Watch
Image
“St. Denis Medical” has been one of the freshest, funniest new comedies of the 2024-2025 TV season, and its co-creators and cast know why: It’s deeply rooted in truth. Creator, showrunner, and writer Eric Ledgin even did his own research to find out if hospital staff really do have sex in the on-call rooms, as shown on so many TV medical dramas.

Ledgin was joined by co-creator and writer Justin Spitzer and actors Wendi McLendon-Covey, Allison Tolman, Josh Lawson, Mekki Leeper, and Kaliko Kauahi for an IndieWire Consider This Live Event moderated by actress D’Arcy Carden at Vidiots Foundation in Los Angeles’s Eagle Rock neighborhood on May 29. This was an official TV Academy FYC event.

Watch the full panel above.

The theme of the evening kept coming back to truth. In fact, the very idea for the show came from some real-life experiences Ledgin had over the years.

Every Season Of The Good Place, Ranked
Image
If you somehow missed "The Good Place," an existential afterlife comedy from "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" and "Parks and Recreation" creator Michael Schur, I implore you to fix that immediately. The series premiered in September of 2016 and introduced audiences to Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell), Chidi Anagonye (William Jackson Harper), Tahani Al-Jamil (Jameela Jamil), and "Jianyu," whose real name is Jason Mendoza (Manny Jacinto in arguably his best role). When these four humans die on Earth, they end up in an afterlife that they're told is the "Good Place" by the specific "heavenly" neighborhood's architect, Michael (Ted Danson). Michael, who's flanked by his not-a-robot, not-a-girl assistant Janet (D'Arcy Carden), guides Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani, and Jason through this seemingly idyllic celestial neighborhood, until a twist late in the show's first season reveals something absolutely enormous. Also, there is a Bad Place, and Michael says the core four do not want to end up there.

Alexis Bledel Withdraws From Emmy Race for ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Due to New Guest Actor Rules (Exclusive)
Image
Alexis Bledel has withdrawn herself from Emmy consideration for “The Handmaid’s Tale” following rule changes to the guest acting categories.

Bledel, who plays Dr. Emily Malek/Ofglen in the Hulu drama, had been submitted for outstanding guest actress in a drama series for her appearance in the series finale, “610 – The Handmaid’s Tale.” However, due to a newly enforced Emmy rule disqualifying actors previously nominated in a lead or supporting category for the same show, the Television Academy notified Bledel and her team that she would be moved to the supporting actress race. As a result, she opted to withdraw her name from consideration and will not appear on the nomination ballot when voting begins on June 12.

Bledel won the guest actress Emmy in 2017 and was nominated again in 2020 and 2021. In 2018, after appearing in seven of 13 episodes that season, she was deemed ineligible as a guest and was nominated instead...
