“The easy part was, I don’t have to use emotions,” Ju told Deadline. “But the difficult part to express is that there’s a reason why I don’t have these emotions. Later on in the series, I have to show why I’m so unexpressive.

Image
Queen of Tears has been 2024's biggest K-drama so far. Success factors include writer Park Ji-eun and Kim Soo-hyun/Kim Ji-won's performances. Love Next Door, starring Jung So-min and Jung Hae-in, could be this year's "next Queen of Tears."

Queen of Tears is the biggest K-drama hit of 2024, but Jung So-min's upcoming series could take its place. Starring Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Ji-won, Queen of Tears takes an unconventional approach by depicting the love story of a couple on the brink of divorce. Every episode brought a new twist, allowing the series to race towards Crash Landing on You's record as Tvn's most-watched K-drama of all time. Queen of Tears' final episode smashes this record by almost three percent, even remaining on Netflix's Global top ten for 15 weeks.

Several factors contributed to Queen of Tears success. Firstly, writer Park Ji-eun is a K-drama mastermind, having written iconic shows...

Song Joong-kis Queen of Tears Cameo Makes Me Want To Watch This 8-Year-Old K-Drama Classic Again
Image
Song Joong-ki's cameo in Queen of Tears references his various roles, connecting with director Kim Hee-won. Kim Ji-won and Song Joong-ki's on-screen chemistry is showcased in Descendants of the Sun and Arthdal Chronicles. Both Queen of Tears and Descendants of the Sun share similar love stories and balance of tragedy and comedy.

I love finding cameos in K-dramas and Song Joong-ki's surprise appearance in Queen of Tears made me want to watch one of his best shows all over again. Song Joong-ki has a vast career that is full of many colorful characters, one of which includes Vincenzo Cassano from the mafia K-drama Vincenzo. Song Joong-ki's revival of the hard-faced lawyer in Queen of Tears is one of the best K-drama cameos of recent times and a great nod to one of his best roles. Yet, I could not stop thinking about another of his most memorable shows when I was watching it.

Film Review: No Tears for the Dead (2014) by Lee Jeong-beom
Image
Back in 2010, screenwriter director Lee Jeong-beom's “The Man from Nowhere” which starred Won Bin, was the highest grossing film in South Korea. Best known for its amazing and thrilling action sequences, the film had fans longing for more from Lee. Therefore it is not really a surprise that he would follow it up with yet another action thriller that featured even more spectacular action but with a similar theme.

Disney+ Adds Buddy Cop Series ‘Han River Police’ to K-Drama Slate
Image
Disney+ is boosting its growing K-drama slate with Han River Police, an action comedy series starring Kwon Sang-woo (Stairway to Heaven, Curtain Call) and Kim Hee-won (Netflix’s Unlocked).

Kwon will star as Han Dujin, the hot-tempered sergeant of the Han River Police Force who holds back for nobody, while Kim plays Lee Chunseok, a laid-back lieutenant with the exact opposite personality. Stuck together on patrol of Seoul’s Han River, the two officers are faced with emergency situations ranging from terrorism to everyday accidents and other incidents requiring emergency assistance — a premise that suggests all of the action, humor and offbeat crime-solving of the classic buddy cop genre.

Disney hasn’t released additional casting info for the show, but local news outlet Korea JoongAng Daily reports that Shin Hyeon-seung (So Not Worth It), Lee Sang-yi (Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha) and Bae Da-bin (Gangnam Beauty) will co-star as other cops on the Han River Police force.

Film Review: Unlocked (2023) by Kim Tae-joon
Image
Our smartphones have become almost an extension of ourselves in today’s digital age, with people depending on their phones for so many of our daily tasks. This also means that our handsets hold a large number of our data, a lot of it highly sensitive, which in the wrong hands could prove rather harmful to us. For his debut directorial, Kim Tae-joon adapts the popular Japanese film “Stolen Identity”, itself based on a namesake novel, and brings Korean sensibilities to this real-world problem in Netflix’s newest Korean release “Unlocked”.

“Unlocked” is Streaming on Netflix

Starting off with a stylish montage of just how much we rely on our smartphone in a day, we meet Lee Na-mi who, after a heavy night of partying and drinking, forgets her phone on the bus, an incident that is about to change her life for the worse. The phone gets picked up by Oh Jun-yeong,...

‘Unlocked’ (2023) Netflix Movie. Review
Image
Unlocked is a South Korean film directed by Kim Tae-joon based on the novel by Akira Shiga. It stars Chun Woo-hee, Yim Si-wan and Kim Hee-won.

A South Korean movie about hackers, internet identities and many social networks and… murders.

An entertaining thriller that, although isn´t much technically, is more entertaining than fascinating.

Storyline

In a drunken night a girl loses her mobile phone. A boy takes advantage of this and takes over her identity. Meanwhile, a dead woman appears in the forest.

Movie Review Unlocked

A classic thriller that uses common fears (with a real base) about the insecurity of having all one´s life tied up in a mobile phone. So far, this is basic and boring, but the unblocked identity also becomes a thriller about murders, which adds an extra touch of attraction.

The story is well planned and the relationship between the main two characters,...
