There's bad news for One Piece fans who enjoy watching the anime on Netflix. The streaming platform recently confirmed one of the franchise's specials will be removed next month.
What's on Netflix recently revealed that One Piece: Heart of Gold will be departing Netflix as of Sept. 1. Luckily, this is the only One Piece title that appears to be leaving Netflix at this time, so fans can still enjoy their favorite episodes that are already on the streamer. Heart of Gold is a TV special of the anime that was a tie-in to the One Piece Film: Gold, leading directly into it and telling a separate story that gives fans an even deeper look into the anime's universe.

The genre of war cinema has taken many forms over the decades ever since it sprung up into being alongside narrative cinema itself. Whether by exploring real historical and present-day conflicts or fictional ones, movies have time and again proven capable of mining the tension, violence, and unimaginably high stakes of war for pathos, action, and political critique.
Incidentally, Netflix has a solid roster of great war films from across the decades available to subscribers, and we've compiled a list of the best. Each of these movies concerns itself with real-life wars (four of them being World War II movies), although some tell wholly fictional stories within those frameworks. The two earliest-set among them take place in ancient India and China, while another looks at the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the early half of the 2010s. The highly anticipated live-action adaptation of Satoru Noda’s Golden Kamuy had its opening day stage greeting on Jan 19, 2024, at Toho Cinemas Roppongi Hills in Tokyo.
The cast, including Hiroshi Tamaki, Asuka Kudo, Shuntaro Yanagi, and Ryohei Otani shared their behind-the-scenes experiences and shed light on the challenges encountered during filming.
Since Golden Kamuy is set in the late Meiji era in Hokkaido, revolving around a battle for a substantial Ainu treasure, the filmmakers took on the challenge of capturing the authentic winter atmosphere of Hokkaido, leading to extreme conditions during the shoot.
Yanagi revealed the harsh conditions, stating, “It was a tough shoot; we even had icicles forming in our ears. We used to check with each other, wondering, ‘Are our ears frozen?‘”. Asuka Kudo too added to this, highlighting the persistence of the icy challenge, especially during extended takes.

He then went on to praise the actors for their portrayal of characters, describing them as ‘cool, mature, cute, and well-suited’ to their respective roles. He noted that their appeal brought a unique liveliness to the characters, distinct from the manga.

One Piece Film: Red has become the 7th highest-grossing Japanese film of all time.
Box office tracker Kogyo Tsushin revealed that One Piece Film: Red has now passed Studio Ghibli's Princess Mononoke with 20.27 billion yen (US$133.6 million) as of Nov. 12, 2023. Princess Mononoke currently stands at 20.18 billion ($133 million). Film: Red initially ended its box office run just shy of the 20 billion mark on Jan. 29, 2023, with 19.7 billion, but recent re-screenings mean the movie now chases Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, which sits at 20.3 billion.
Anime NYC Invites Attendees to Challenge Real-Life Marines in One Piece Battle Dome
The only other currently screening films to make Kogyo's top 100 on the all-time list are Top Gun: Maverick in 20th with 13.74 billion and another Studio Ghibli film, The Boy and the Heron, at 73rd with 8.54 billion. It's expected that The Boy and the Heron will continue to climb quickly as it carries on with its international rollout.

This post contains spoilers for "One Piece Film Red."
"One Piece Film Red" is filled with explosive and mind-bending moments that not only features stunning animation and fun world-building but also rewards viewers who have watched or read the series from the beginning. Eiichiro Oda himself said that "One Piece" was nearing its end, and although he's said that several times before, the events and character interactions up to this point all seem to indicate that it may actually be true this time. That's especially the case with "One Piece Film Red," which heavily features one of the most popular characters in the series who has, throughout 1,000 plus episodes of anime, essentially only appeared three times.
I am, of course, talking about the legendary pirate Red-Haired Shanks, Captain of the Red-Haired Pirates, and the man who gave Luffy his signature straw hat, which has now become symbolic of everything "One Piece" related.

Just how far can Luffy stretch? That’s a question “One Piece” fans have been asking for years of the Gum-Gum hero with the go-go-gadget arms. Sure, there are limits to Luffy’s flexibility, but if you look at the pirate adventure series to which he belongs — one that’s been serialized for 25 years running, generating more than 100 books, 1,000-plus anime episodes and 15 theatrical features — it would seem that “One Piece” creator Eiichiro Oda can stretch the entire franchise pretty much as far as he pleases.
Case in point: The series’ latest entry, “One Piece Film: Red,” expands into musical territory, focusing on a pop star named Uta who has been made powerful by the Sing-Sing Fruit. “One Piece” characters gain special abilities after consuming Devil Fruit (Gum-Gum is Luffy’s), and Sing-Sing skills allow this chic chanteuse with two-tone hair and a worldwide fan base to whisk listeners...

Why is "One Piece" one of the longest-running animes ever? What's so special about this goofy series about a young boy with the ability to turn his body into rubber, whose dreams of becoming the Pirate King have persisted for nearly 25 years? For a long time, that answer has escaped me, even as I recognized its impact and saw whole stores and statues dedicated to the beloved anime while visiting Japan, or caught a handful of episodes on Cartoon Network. But with "One Piece Film: Red," I kind of get it.
The "One Piece" feature film directed by Gorō Taniguchi and written by Tsutomu Kuroiwa is a one-off adventure unrelated to the events of the main series, but it manages to capture the wild, frenzied energy of the anime while telling an engaging, if simple, story of a young girl whose dreams warped into something monstrous. Luffy and co. are...

Fans of One Piece have speculated for years that, at some point, Luffy and the Straw Hats could land on the Moon, and it appears that the series creator Eiichiro Oda does not dismiss the idea either. In a recent interview, the screenwriter of One Piece Film: Red reveals that Oda once shared with him an important hint that makes this ludicrous theory actually possible.
One Piece is full of mysteries and half-revealed truths, which are one of the main reasons why fans are still attracted by the series 25 years after its beginning. Symbols are everywhere in the world of One Piece, and none is as ubiquitous as the Moon. Ranging from explicit references (such as the Lunarian tribe) to its appearance in the background of significant scenes and panels, the Moon plays an important role in the One Piece mythos, along with its opposite, the Sun. The screenwriter of One Piece Film: Red reveals that the movie was initially supposed to star one of the most beloved characters in the entire series: Bon Kurei, aka Mr. 2. In one of the discarded ideas for the film, Luffy and his companions were supposed to invade the New Impel Down prison to rescue Bon Kurei, who sacrificed himself to let them escape from that same prison in the One Piece manga.
Bentham of the Wild, alias Mr. 2 Bon Kurei, also known as Bon Clay in some English translations, was originally a villain that the Straw Hats met during the Arabasta Arc. As one of the officers in Mr. Crocodile's Baroque Works, he was one of the main antagonists in that saga, but his genuine and honest personality immediately resonated with Luffy and the Straw Hats, forging a bond over the shared value of friendship. The story takes place on an island where Uta, the world’s favorite diva, performs for the first time in public.
