Image
Kevin Costnerhas had some classic films throughout his career, and one such movie is Field of Dreams. One of his baseball movies, Field of Dreams came out in 1989 and asked an important question: How far would you go to see your loved one again? Ray Kinsella (Costner) is the son of a baseball player named John Kinsella (Dwier Brown). But John passed away, and now Ray is given the chance to build a baseball field in his corn fields and see his father again. The emotional Phil Alden Robinson movie has become a classic throughout the years, and you have one day left to watch it on Netflix!

On August 1, the film is leaving the streaming platform, and that means July 31 is the perfect time to head to

Dyersville, Iowa to watch as Ray goes to find Terrance Mann (James Earl Jones) and find a way to bring his father back to him.

Netflix Quietly Hosts a Kevin Costner Gem That Snubbed Robin Williams: “Bless his heart”
Image
In the history of cinema, there are a ton of films that have explored the multifaceted narratives revolving around family and forgiveness. However, none has done it like the American classic, Field of Dreams, featuring Kevin Costner in the limelight. One may ardently claim that it’s “another sports film about redemption.”

However, the intricate storytelling and the motif of chasing one’s dream with Costner in the lead role have made it a classic and a must-watch for movie connoisseurs. The Yellowstone actor did a phenomenal job of keeping the viewers’ eyes glued to the screens.

But to think that he was picked ahead of the legendary Robin Williams for the role of Ray Kinsella sounds unreal to the ears. Surprising as it may sound, that’s exactly what happened, and Costner explains the secret behind it.

Kevin Costner snubs Robin Williams for his career-defining film

‘The Good Place’ Creator Reveals His ‘Field of Dreams’ Series Has “Two Whole Different Versions” Ready to Make
Image
Back in 2021, Michael Schur was attached to a series adaptation of one of the most beloved sports movies ever made — Field of Dreams. Peacock had issued a straight-to-series order for the project, believing that his experience in mixing the "whimsical" with more grounded, relatable elements in shows like The Good Place would be the perfect match for rebuilding the Kevin Costner classic. Progress was far enough along that cameras were preparing to roll in the summer of 2022, but, according to Schur in a conversation with Vulture in 2023, "They just changed their mind" and "didn't want to spend the money anymore," leading to the cancellation. Now, the creator has opened up in a larger interview with Variety about his plans for the series and why he wanted to take on Field of Dreams.

Released in 1989, the original Field of Dreams was based on the novel Shoeless Joe by W.P. Kinsella and...

“I felt like I had a giant secret”: Kevin Costner Was Absolutely Sure of His 88% Rated Movie That’s on Netflix
Image
Kevin Costner has always been candid with his opinions regarding his films. An accomplished filmmaker himself, the 70-year-old knew it from the first reading that his critically acclaimed movie Field of Dreams would be a cinematic success.

Now, more than 36 years after its release, Field of Dreams boasts an enviable score on Rotten Tomatoes. The Phil Alden Robinson directorial has garnered a respectable score of 7.5 on IMDb as well.

While there is seldom a way to ensure a film’s success, Costner once revealed that he was sure of the film the moment he read the script. The mystical elements and dream sequences of Field of Dreams won over the Oscar winner, who once claimed that he felt like he was harboring a secret when he realized the film would be a hit.

Kevin Costner had a notion that Field of Dreams was special

Mike Schur Gave Chris Pratt a Career Only for Him to Ruin His Dream TV Show Inspired by Kevin Costner

Michael Schur and Chris Pratt are some of the most celebrated names in modern entertainment. Schur has earned acclaim for incredible work on shows like The Office and Parks and Recreation, the latter of which also helped catapult Pratt to stardom. Meanwhile, Pratt has transitioned into a full-fledged movie star, headlining major franchises since his days on the NBC sitcom.

However, their shared legacy goes beyond the beloved sitcom that launched their collaboration. In fact, Schur and Pratt were once poised to reunite on a passion project, a TV series based on Field of Dreams, which unfortunately never made it to air, reportedly due to Pratt himself.

Ben Affleck And Matt Damon Briefly Worked With Kevin Costner On A Classic Sports Movie
Image
Phil Alden Robinson's 1989 sports drama "Field of Dreams" is Americana at its corniest. In many ways, literally; the main character, Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner), bulldozes a large portion of his corn farm in order to build a brand-new baseball diamond. Ray did so at the behest of a ghostly voice that instructed him, "If you build it, he will come." Sure enough, when he builds the diamond, the ghost of "Shoeless Joe" Jackson (Ray Liotta) appears on it, still wearing his Boston Black Sox uniform, and converses with him.

Ghosts, time travel, and premonitions are a big part of "Field of Dreams," and it's implied that baseball itself is connected to divine powers that are eager to grant related wishes, calm hearts, allow for post-mortem redemption, and provide reconciliation between fathers and sons. Case in point: Ray and his wife Annie (Amy Madigan) have a dream about Fenway Park in Boston,...

Every Ben Affleck & Matt Damon Movie, Ranked From Worst To Best
Image
Over the years, Hollywood has delivered an abundance of memorable on-screen partnerships -- Bob Hope and Bing Crosby, Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, Paul Newman and Robert Redford, Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy, and Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, among many others. Over 30 years after their first collaboration, it's probably safe to add Matt Damon and Ben Affleck to the list.

Together, the dynamic duo have produced memorable entertainment aplenty, putting their remarkable chemistry to good use in everything from Kevin Smith's "Dogma" to Affleck's "Air." These guys have teamed up on nearly a dozen projects, even for a brief cameo or minor supporting role. Recently, their partnership has intensified with the aforementioned "Air" and Ridley Scott's "The Last Duel," it's a shame they haven't found more films to work on together over the years, because these boys are wicked smaht.

To celebrate this long-running partnership, we decided...

Tim McGraw to Play First-Ever Concert at the Field of Dreams Movie Site
Image
This summer, Tim McGraw will go the distance by performing the first-ever concert at the iconic baseball diamond in a cornfield where Kevin Costner’s 1989 classic Field of Dreams was filmed. The one-of-a-kind live experience is set to take place August 30th in Dyersville, Iowa.

As a spoiler-y refresher (or if you’ve never seen the movie), Field of Dreams centers on Costner’s Ray Kinsella turning his farm into a baseball diamond after being compelled by a mysterious voice. The studio built an actual diamond in an actual cornfield for the movie, and the site has since played home to numerous events and baseball games over the years — even hosting seasonal games with The Ghost Players and two special MLB games.

However, McGraw’s performance, created in partnership between StubHub and U.S. Concert Agency, will be the first major concert at the location.

James Earl Jones' Field Of Dreams Character Terence Mann Is Based On A Real Person
Image
Even in death, the late, great James Earl Jones remains a "Star Wars" legend, a Broadway icon, one of the most gifted orators in modern history, and a true titan of Hollywood. But if you're a baseball fan -- specifically a baseball movie fan -- he'll always be Terence Mann from "Field of Dreams." Jones' performance as the reclusive author-turned-ghost-baseball-observer is a major anchor for the classic film, grounding the loftier emotional beats. The movie might have felt even more grounded if the character hadn't been changed from the version of the character in the novel "Shoeless Joe," on which "Field of Dreams" is based.

In W.P. Kinsella's 1982 book, the writer sought out by protagonist Ray Kinsella isn't some made-up person, but J.D. Salinger, best known as the author of "The Catcher in the Rye." Though Salinger had already pulled back from public life when Kinsella's novel was published,...

Why Field Of Dreams Made James Earl Jones Break Down In Tears
Image
For over 50 years, the late James Earl Jones' name in the credits of a film was reason enough to devote a couple of hours to a movie. Was it always a satisfying two hours? As someone who sat through "Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold," "Three Fugitives," and "Soul Man," I can confidently say no.

This is more than fine. Jones was a working actor who took the "work" part seriously. As he told journalist Joe Leydon in 1989, "This is my profession. I do need to make a living at it, because I can't make a living any other way." So, when you're not getting offered, say, "The Great White Hope" every time out, you roll up your sleeves and do some time on the sets of "Blood Tide," "Best of the Best," and "Excessive Force" with no apologies. Those paychecks keep you afloat while you wait for...

Kevin Costner Just Said One of His Classic Movies Is Our Generation's 'It's a Wonderful Life' — For Real
Image
There isn't another sports movie quite like Field of Dreams. Released in 1989, this fantasy family drama starred Kevin Costner as Ray Kinsella, a struggling Iowa farmer who struggles even more to achieve his own dreams. To make things increasingly more complicated, he's told by a mysterious voice to build a baseball field in his backyard. Even stranger, he agrees, the financial strain be damned. For decades, audiences have flocked to Field of Dreams as the spectators do at the end of the film, considering it an inspirational and uplifting tale. Kevin Costner agrees. In fact, he agrees so much that he's gone so far as to compare his baseball flick to one of the greatest movies ever made, It's a Wonderful Life, and somehow, it just makes sense.

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From Field Of Dreams

We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

You don't often see the great movies coming. Sure, some classics swagger their way into theaters (like "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" did in 2023), but take a look at the vast majority of the movies on your favorites queue and you'll see titles that arrived with very little fanfare. Warner Bros. didn't expect "L.A. Confidential" to take off like it did, and Columbia Pictures was absolutely stunned when "The Shawshank Redemption" rebounded after a disappointing theatrical release to become one of the most beloved motion pictures in the history of the medium.

Then there's Universal and "Field of Dreams." Kevin Costner was a movie star in 1989 on the strength of "The Untouchables," "No Way Out" and "Bull Durham," but two of those three hits were adult-skewing entertainments that traded heavily on his sex appeal. "Field of Dreams" was ... really, what in...

10 Classic Hollywood Actors With the Best Final Movie
Image
Hollywood has seen a variety of acting legends come and go, from classic stars like Cary Grant and John Wayne to modern icons like Gary Oldman and Tom Hanks. As stars age up, some become stalwarts of modern cinema, playing the roles of wise mentors to younger actors, while others see their star fade and transition to lower-budget films. As a result, some actors finish their careers in relative obscurity to younger audiences, while others are lucky enough to go out with a bang.

Some actors and directors are so conscious of their career record that they become incredibly selective when it comes to movies they work on, trying to preserve a near-flawless record. That said, stars can never be certain of how their final movie will turn out, whether an issue of the final production or simply being a miss with audiences. From animated movies to critically acclaimed hits,...

Image
Your browser does not support the video tag.

The 1980s is a decade known for many things, from the explosion of rock and roll to iconic films, like Terminator, The Empire Strikes Back, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. Despite the decade being arguably the most legendary in the history of film at least as far as modern audiences are concerned a lot of good movies continue to fly under the radar. From forgotten sequels to brilliant animated films, the decade has no shortage of films that were overshadowed by blockbuster hits.

Every decade has its share of overlooked gems and, the further back audiences look, the more forgotten gems they'll find. For a decade so packed full of influential and enduring stories, it's no surprise that some would only find success as cult classics. What makes a film underrated can be in the eye of the beholder, but it's...

James Earl Jones Was So Much More Than His Golden Voice
Image
With James Earl Jones, there was always the voice. It rumbled. It poured over you, thick as molasses. It sounded regal, even when he was playing a humble ex-ballplayer instead of a king. It was always unmistakably his — he wasn’t even credited as the voice of Darth Vader in the first two Star Wars films, but everyone of course knew — yet remarkably versatile within what could have been a limited basso profundo range. He could be the epitome of evil as Vader, a clear figure of goodness and reason...

Kevin Costner's Field Of Dreams Was Almost Remade With A Marvel Star
Image
Chris Pratt nearly starred in a "Field of Dreams" remake that never came to fruition, according to new reporting from Puck's Lesley Goldberg. In a feature for the website titled "The Best and Worst Deals of the Peak TV Era," Puck News revealed that "Guardians of the Galaxy" star Pratt was at one point slated to head up a Peacock series remake of the 1989 sports film, but reportedly "abruptly" dropped out of the project.

The TV show version was initially going to be developed by Mike Schur, the comedy mastermind behind shows like "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," "The Good Place," and the show that gave Pratt his breakout role, "Parks and Recreation." When the show was initially announced in 2021, Lisa Katz, the President of NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, said that "Field of Dreams" has "remained a fan favorite" for years, and that Schur was the right person to tackle the project.

But if we’re talking about films that really knock it out of the park when it comes to capturing the father-son bond, Field of Dreams takes the cake.

This 1989 gem, directed by Phil Alden Robinson and starring Kevin Costner, James Earl Jones, Amy Madigan, and Ray Liotta, is the cinematic equivalent of a grand slam. It’s the story of Ray Kinsella, an ordinary farmer whose life is haunted by a fractured relationship with his late father.

But here’s the twist: Some fans have woken up to the fact that this film was specifically aimed at those missing their dads.

“I was convinced he was in love with me, too”: Kevin Costner’s ‘Field of Dreams’ Co-Star Had Not-So-Nice Things to Say About Him After Gushing Over Ray Liotta
Image
Kevin Costner has scored some really epic projects throughout his decades-long career, with Field of Dreams (1989), Dances with Wolves (1990), and Yellowstone (2018) ranking among his top bests.

But while he has achieved a lot of success and stardom through the same, it seems like not all of his co-stars shared that pleasant experience while working with him.

This stands especially true while talking about his 1989 sports/fantasy masterpiece, considering the minimal but interestingly not-so-nice things Costner’s younger co-star and actress Gaby Hoffmann had to say about working with him.

In comparison, she had a ton of better things to say while gushing on and on about working with Ray Liotta, who was another one of her co-stars in the film.

Image
Phil Alden Robinson chose Kevin Costner over Robin Williams for Field of Dreams due to Costner's grounded reputation. Costner's career was defined by Field of Dreams, leading to further success with movies like Dances With Wolves. Robin Williams, despite being a big star, lost the role in Field of Dreams to Costner due to the director's vision for the character.

Kevin Costners role of Ray Kinsella in the 90s movie Field of Dreams could almost have been played by Robin Williams, but Costner won the role for one very specific reason. While speaking about many of his iconic movies in a retrospect for GQ, Costner discussed his catching in the baseball drama, and how director Phil Alden Robinson wanted him for the role rather than Williams because he believed Costners more grounded reputation would add to the believability of the character.

Bless His Heart: Kevin Costner Explains How He Beat Out Robin Williams To Star In Field Of Dreams

Costner's casting in Field of Dreams came because director Robinson believed he was better suited than Robin Williams for the role. The decision paid off, showcasing Costner's talent and helping him establish himself as a serious actor beyond the comedy realm. Believe it or not, even the most beloved movies can face initial skepticism from actors. Field of Dreams, a 1989 classic, became more than just a sports movie. It delved into deeper themes like redemption, family, and the importance of pursuing dreams. Despite its universal appeal, Ray Liotta, who played the memorable character “Shoeless” Joe Jackson, wasn’t immediately sold on the story.

Kevin Costner's Father Thought Yellowstone Would Derail His Son's Career
Image
All dads are not created equal. Some offer unconditional love, some take a firm-but-fair approach, some are rolling stones, some are actual Rolling Stones, and some are The Great Santini. It's a cosmic crap shoot as to which kind of paterfamilias you wind up with, and even an ideal upbringing can morph into a contentious relationship over time. Life, and human beings, are weird that way.

This is why there is no shortage of fiction dealing with dads. We're especially flush with tales centered on the always tricky father-son dynamic. Whole civilizations have come and gone, but dudes have always been hung up for one reason or another on their pops. And over the past 40 years, no actor has been more closely associated with the dramatic exploration of this occasionally fraught kinship than Kevin Costner.

Indeed, the first film that comes to mind for many when they rattle off their...

Field Of Dreams Ending Explained: A Leap Of Faith
Image
Phil Alden Robinson's "Field of Dreams" was the sleeper hit of spring 1989. Based on W.P. Kinsella's wistful novel "Shoeless Joe," the film connected with audiences of all ages, but Baby Boomers in particular. Kevin Costner's Ray Kinsella, like many former hippies, became estranged from his parents during the late 1960s. All Ray had was his dad, and all they had in common was baseball, but even that became a contentious issue. A young and fiery Ray finally hit his breaking point, said something awful to his dad, and never saw him again.

That awful utterance and subsequent shunning gets rectified in the waning moments of "Field of Dreams," and if you saw the film during its initial theatrical release, you beheld the heartening spectacle of mainstream moviegoers, especially men, hanging out through the credits longer than usual. Robinson had crafted the most pulverizing male weepie since Buzz Kulik's "Brian's Song,...

Peacock’s Scrapped Field of Dreams Adaptation Could Have Been Led by an All-Star Roster
Image
Peacock's planned adaptation of "Field of Dreams" would have featured Kristen Bell, Nick Offerman and more. The series would have included a storyline about Black players trying out for the Boston Red Sox. Despite significant preparation, including the construction of sets resembling the original film, financial issues led to the cancelation of the project.

A Field of Dreams series adaptation was in the works at Peacock, but that dream was dashed when the streamer announced they would not move forward with the series. Michael Schur, who was tied to the project as a writer and executive producer, recently revealed some details that hinted at the possibility of greatness had the reimagining transpired. During an appearance on the Pablo Torre Finds Out podcast, Schur shared that the series' cast would have included Kristen Bell, Andre Braugher, William Jackson Harper, and Nick Offerman (who recently appeared in Prime Video's short-lived A League of Their Own...

Ray Liotta Wasn't Exactly Blown Away By The Script For Field Of Dreams
Image
Kevin Costner has starred in several films about baseball, and they're all remarkably different. Both "Bull Durham" and "For Love of the Game" combine romance with America's National Pastime, yet the former is a funny, flirtatious romp that parallels the mechanics of the sport with the rituals of human courtship. The latter, on the other hand, is an elegiac melodrama about the things we prioritize in life and just how hard it is to bid farewell to the life you used to have upon reaching a crossroads.

Phil Alden Robinson's classic "Field of Dreams" exists somewhere at the nexus of those two films, merging a baseball fable with a poignant story about regret but with a fantasy twist. The film, which adapts W. P. Kinsella's 1982 book "Shoeless Joe," casts Costner as Ray Kinsella, an everyman who, like other Boomers, was once a child of '60s counter-culturalism. He's...

“Go The Distance”: The Voice’s Message To Ray In Field Of Dreams Explained
Image
Ray Kinsella hears many different messages from a disembodied voice throughout 1989’s Field Of Dreams, but one in particular has a special meaning. Based on the novel Shoeless Joe by W. P. Kinsella, Field Of Dreams follows Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella, who literally bets the farm when he is seemingly compelled by spirits to build a baseball field in the middle of his cornfield. True to the message that Ray hears promising “if you build it, he will come,” the spirits of several famous baseball players eventually appear to play night games at Ray’s field.

The messages don’t stop after Ray builds his baseball field, however. While at a baseball game at Fenway Park with author Terence Mann, Ray and Terence hear a message from the voice saying “go the distance." While all the messages that Ray hears in Field Of Dreams are important, the voice telling him...

Playing Hardball With His Untouchables Casting Paid Off For Kevin Costner
Image
Before 1987, Kevin Costner might've been best known in Hollywood for the movie in which he didn't appear.

Lawrence Kasdan's "The Big Chill" gave just about everyone involved a massive career boost, and probably would've done likewise for Costner had he not been cut out of the film. He played Alex Marshall, the character whose death by suicide brings a group of college friends back together for a fall weekend in South Carolina. Though Kasdan shot flashbacks featuring Costner, he ultimately cut them out of the movie, which became a Baby Boomer favorite.

Costner's bid for movie stardom officially began in 1985, with lead roles in Kevin Reynolds' "Fandango" (another Boomer nostalgia piece) and John Badham's "American Flyers." He also landed a flashy supporting role in Lawrence Kasdan's Western throwback, "Silverado." The first two films not only bombed, they barely received a theatrical release, while Kasdan's movie performed well below the studio's commercial expectations.
