It’s rare that an artist’s commercial breakthrough is also their most critically acclaimed. It’s even rarer for an artist to make such a breakthrough more than a decade into their career. But U.K. pop singer Charli Xcx managed to do both with her sixth studio album, Brat, which captured the zeitgeist in 2024 and introduced hyperpop to soccer moms across the U.S. and elsewhere.
Charli first caught our ear all the way back in 2011, with her early lo-fi singles “Stay Away” and “Nuclear Seasons,” which mixed ’80s-coded synths, dark-sided lyrics, and pitch-shifted vocals. Those singles paved the way for the pop-perfect True Romance, the punk-edged Sucker, and a pair of mixtapes, Number 1 Angel and Pop 2, that pushed the singer toward the more experimental sound she would later hone on 2020’s How I’m Feeling Now and Brat.

One of the most infamous and haunting subcultures in music remains the Norwegian black metal scene, which aimed to put into practice the dark themes and subject matter of the music. Nowhere was this more evident than in the disturbing history of the band Mayhem, active originally from 1984 to 1993, right in the midst of the “satanic panic”, and documented in the 2018 film Lords of Chaos, which had its own share of controversy upon its release. Lords of Chaos stars Rory Culkin as Euronymous, the original mastermind behind Mayhem, Emory Cohen as Varg, Jack Kilmer as Dead, and Sky Ferreira as Ann-Marit, basically the only woman in the film who gets only mildly involved in the band and their hellish pit they begin to dig for themselves and their quaint Norwegian town.

“Babygirl” is here, and it’s not just a sexy, surprisingly funny film, it’s got a fantastic soundtrack, too. From “Bodies Bodies Bodies” director Halina Reijn, the erotic dramedy stars Nicole Kidman as an accomplished CEO and loving family woman who risks it all for a power-play affair with a young intern (Harris Dickinson) at her company.
From Christmas parties to Edm night clubs to a private dance set to George Michael, “Babygirl” tracks a lot of their affair through the music, creating a great soundtrack in the process. So much so that “Father Figure” was specifically namedropped in the first draft of the script. It also features the first new song from Sky Ferreira in two years — and her first independent release since Capitol Records dropped her in 2023 — with the film’s original track, “Leash.”

It appears Violet Grohl is set to release her debut album in the near future.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the eldest daughter of Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl has been “incredibly committed” to making full use of the studio space she received as a birthday gift from her father. Producer Justin Raisen is among her collaborators.
It’s believed the 18-year-old Grohl has enough material recorded for a full album, but details like a release date and record label are unclear at this time. Of course, her dad’s own Roswell imprint under RCA Records is a possibility.
Since making her on-stage debut in 2018, Violet has toured with Foo Fighters as a backing vocalist, but has also proven capable of standing on her own in recent years.
In 2022, Grohl paid tribute to Jeff Buckley and Amy Winehouse at the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert in London and covered “Hallelujah” at the Los Angeles show.

It’s been a long road back to music for singer-songwriter Sky Ferreira, but the newly independent artist is back with a brand new single titled “Leash” from the upcoming film “Babygirl.” The film by Halina Reijn stars Golden Globe nominee Nicole Kidman as a high-powered CEO who puts her career and family on the line when she begins a torrid affair with her much-younger intern (Harris Dickinson).
The movie opens Dec. 25 and is receiving plenty of awards buzz, including Ferreira’s “Leash,” which has been submitted for Best Original Song. The artist tells Gold Derby, “I didn’t process it for like two-and-half-days,” after A24 submitted her for the 2025 Oscars. “It just never seemed like that would be a reality for me. It’s pretty f—ing insane. I don’t have a manager. Six months ago I was like, ‘What am I gonna do with my life?’ I was in a full crisis.

Nicole Kidman’s new erotic thriller “Babygirl” not only features holiday scenes, but A24 is releasing the movie on Dec. 25. So does this make the R-rated film a Christmas movie?
“Let’s hope so,” Kidman, who plays a tech company CEO having a kink-filled affair with an intern (Harris Dickinson), told me with a laugh at the film’s premiere Wednesday in Los Angeles. “Somebody thinks it is… A24 is very subversive. They seem to go against the grain always, so maybe [Christmas] is the right time.”
Dickinson weighed in, “It’s absolutely a Christmas movie. I didn’t know it was going to be, but it turned out to be so I’m going with it.”
Halina Reijn, who wrote and directed the movie, said “definitely, as far as I’m concerned.”

Any “Twin Peaks” fan worth their garmonbozia knows Episode 8 of David Lynch and Mark Frost’s revival season “The Return,” from 2017, is the visual and thematic standout. Directing, Lynch traces the origins of an evil presence named Judy — rooting it back to the U.S.’s development of the atomic bomb — in an episode that explains where the series-legacy killer “Bob” came from and how that force has landed now-dazed FBI agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) in a detached red-room netherworld.
But one of the centerpieces of the iconic episode is a visceral performance courtesy of “The” Nine Inch Nails, in the red-lit Twin Peaks Roadhouse Bar, of “She’s Gone Away,” a violent, grunge-fueled ode to destruction and the places you dig into “’til your fingers bleed.” The song was a track on Nine Inch Nails’ 2016 EP “Not Actual Events,” an angry and haunting and weirdly dance-friendly (certainly given...

Sky Ferreira is back with her first new song in over two years. Titled “Leash,” the enthralling single appears on the soundtrack to the buzzy A24 film Babygirl. Stream it below.
Produced by frequent collaborator Jorge Elbrecht, the synth-laden “Leash” is a throwback to Ferreira’s acclaimed 2013 debut, Night Time, My Time, with occasionally disturbing lyrics appropriate for the erotic thriller.
“Every scrape leads me back to you/ All the hate is a gift that grew,” she sings. “I saw, I saw right through/ Chains are heavy, pull me close to you.”
“Leash” marks Ferreira’s first new track since 2022’s “Don’t Forget,” which at the time was her first new single in three years. Since then, the artist has gone independent after being dropped by Capitol Records.

There are so many folkloric tales around the songwriter and recording artist Sky Ferreira, it can be hard to know where to begin.
Maybe it’s how she moved to New York from Los Angeles at 15 to model, sing and act in homage to her idol Madonna.
It could be all the fame she gained as a teenager for self-releasing tracks on MySpace, a pioneering example of the viral pop star.
Perhaps it’s how she spent childhood holidays with Michael Jackson because her grandmother was his hairdresser.
Or it might be the music battles. Ferreira’s sophomore album — Masochism, fittingly — has been delayed for nine years with no release date in sight. An epic war has played out with Capitol Records — a conflict so intense and stifling someone (it’s still not clear who) paid to fly a plane with the message “Free Sky Ferreira” over the Capitol Tower last year.

Taylor Swift released her Eras Tour book on Black Friday and has already been reaching insane milestones. According to a reputed physical book sales tracker, it has now become the second non-fiction book ever to achieve this amount of sales in a single week. The first place is held by former Potus Barack Obama’s A Promised Land, with 816,000 copies sold in a week.

However, what makes Swift’s achievement even more surprising is that it reached close to that milestone in just two days. Whereas, Obama’s book’s tracking records state that the number was for a full week. As it stands, the pop star might just break the glass ceiling when a full week of sales ends.

Sky Ferreira is having her comeback, releasing her first new song in three years, “Leash,” for Halina Reijn’s “Babygirl.” Speaking to IndieWire, the 32-year-old pop star and actress reflected on her work with David Lynch. Ferreira cameo’d in the 2017 “Twin Peaks: The Return” revival as Ella — a woman with a terrible rash at the Roadhouse bar — and even covered “Blue Velvet” for him.
“There’s a lot of surprises, because you never know what you’re doing,” Ferreira told IndieWire. “It was funny, because you get the script maybe the day before. Like, I knew that I was doing ‘Twin Peaks,’ but I didn’t know what I was going to do. Literally the day before when I read it, I really didn’t know what I was going to do.
“But when I was doing it, it suddenly made sense when he [David Lynch] was directing me,” she said.

When it comes to music at the movies in 2024, this might be remembered as the year of the weird musical – or, at least, the movies that you wouldn’t think would be musicals, but were. There was Todd Phillips’ sequel, “Joker: Folie a Deux,” which nobody figured would be full of musical numbers until it was; Joshua Oppenheimer’s “The End,” with post-apocalyptic underground crooning by Tilda Swinton and others; and, of course, Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez,” which sounded odd on paper – “a brutal Mexican cartel leader hires a high-powered attorney to engineer a gender-reassignment surgery” – even before you threw in lavish musical numbers.
But there were more traditional musicals, too: the smash hit “Wicked,” which reserved its new songs for Part 2 in 2025, along with “Moana 2,” “Mufasa: The Lion King,” and others.
And the year found lots of notable musicians writing songs for films, including Pharrell Williams and...

Sky Ferreira’s rise to fame might seem like a dream come true, but the reality behind the success is far from a fairy tale. Despite receiving glowing praise for her debut album Night Time, My Time, the 32-year-old Los Angeles-born singer has shouldered significant financial struggles since parting ways with Capitol Records. The road to artistic freedom is rarely paved with gold, and for Ferreira, it’s been a tough pill to swallow.

With a hypnotic, percussive-groove at the song’s center, Moore enters a nature-induced dream state. “This terrain is changing/ Rewilding, rearranging/ So I’m singing for animals/ Outside here just grazing,” Moore mutters at the song’s opening, with My Bloody Valentine bassist Deb Googe laying a thick, repetitive bassline beneath him.
“Don’t you dare wake me/ A butterfly just kissed me,” he sings. Though there are traces of menace and doubt in the song’s trance-like, psychedelic aura, the environmental renewal that Moore describes lends itself to flourishing peace. Stream “Rewilding” below.
“Rewilding” isn’t just a Thurston Moore x Earth Day special, it’s the latest offering from his forthcoming album Samurai Walkman: Flow Critical Lucidity. He previously shared album cuts “Hypnogram” and “Isadora,” which arrived...

Sky Ferreira made a surprise cameo at Coachella Saturday when the singer appeared onstage before Kevin Abstract’s set to deliver a cover of Lady A’s “Need You Now.”
Without any official announcement, the leather jacket and sunglasses-clad Ferreira sauntered out onstage to the shock of fans, and promptly debuted her synth-laden (and unfortunately abridged) rendition of the smash single by the country band formerly known as Lady Antebellum.
Just as mysteriously as she emerged, Ferreira departed, leaving the former Brockhampton rapper Abstract to begin has set as planned.

Warning: This list contains spoilers for Baby Driver.
Most of the cast dies in Baby Driver, except for Baby, Debora, and Joseph. Baby's backstory includes the death of his parents in a car crash. Characters like Bats, Darling, Doc, and Buddy meet grim ends throughout the movie.
Edgar Wright's Baby Driver is a high-speed crime and action movie that sees the deaths of almost the entire cast, besides a couple of main characters. The thriller follows musical enthusiast Baby (Ansel Elgort) a young getaway driver determined to leave behind a life of crime. However, when the crime boss Doc (Kevin Spacey) forces him to return for a heist that goes horribly wrong, Baby is launched into a labyrinth of death, destruction, and revenge.

Baby Driver's eclectic soundtrack enhances the film's action and drama, with each song perfectly matching the rhythm and beats of the scenes. The detailed breakdown of the songs used in Baby Driver provides insight into the film's key moments and their significance in the story. Edgar Wright's stylistic editing and direction make Baby Driver a visually captivating and engaging cinematic experience.
Baby Driver's white-knuckling car chase scenes and feel-good romantic moments are perfectly complemented with a diverse set of songs. Directed by Edgar Wright, Baby Driver, as its title suggests, focuses on a getaway driver named Baby who hopes to leave his criminal life behind after getting in a romantic relationship with a girl named Debora. However, to his dismay, not everything goes as planned. Like every Edgar Wright movie, Baby Driver's primary appeal comes from its stylistic editing and direction.

Baby Driver is a unique blend of genres praised for its direction and cast. Ansel Elgort, Lily James, and the supporting cast deliver impressive performances in Baby Driver, bringing the intriguing story to life. Baby Driver's sequel is in the works, but the cast is unknown.
Baby Driver was a critical and commercial success following its premiere in 2017, partly due to the performances given by its talented cast. The action film, directed and written by Edgar Wright, revolves around Ansel Elgort's titular character's pursuit to escape his life of crime as a getaway driver for bank robbers by paying off a debt to a crime syndicate's kingpin. However, quitting isn't as effortlessly easy as he first believes, of course. Meanwhile, in the midst of the complex conflict, a romantic subplot between Baby and Lily James' Debora transpires in the action movie.

Since it debuted on Netflix in early October, the Benicio Del Toro-starring "Reptile" has consistently been one of the top 10 most-watched titles on the streaming platform. The film is the feature debut of director Grant Singer, who cut his teeth directing music videos for artists like The Weeknd, Sky Ferreira, Lorde, Taylor Swift, Sam Smith, Ariana Grande, Ariel Pink, and Skrillex. "I think the movie will be exciting to people who like to watch something where you don't know where it's leading you, where a film is going to have twists and turns and deceive you," Singer said in the film's press release. "And people who like things that are intense and visceral and suspenseful, I think they'll find something exciting in this." Here's the film's official synopsis:

Though she’d dreamed of owning a Spanish Revival home, there was something about the boxy, modern house that Anonymous Content manager Meredith Rothman couldn’t shake. Maybe it was the floor-to-ceiling windows. Or the abundance of natural light. Or the fact that it was tucked neatly into a canyon in Beverly Hills, conjuring up memories of her childhood home in Bel Air. Rothman asked interior designer Lauren Waters for her thoughts. “I assured her it was a wonderful blank canvas for intriguing furniture and great art,” says Waters.
That advice sealed the deal for Rothman, who tasked Waters with transforming the 2,500-square-foot spec house into a home that would serve as space to unwind, enable her to host the occasional soiree and showcase her burgeoning art collection, which includes works by Analia Saban and John Baldessari, as well as a charcoal drawing by her grandmother Luddie Waters, who was...

Reptile, the Netflix murder mystery film, keeps viewers guessing with its twists and turns, leaving them constantly questioning the truth and the killer's identity. The filming locations for Reptile primarily took place in Atlanta, Georgia, with various spots in the metropolitan area used to depict different settings in the movie. Although most of the filming occurred in Atlanta, the cast and crew also traveled to parts of New England, potentially including Scarborough, Maine, where the movie is set, to capture certain exterior shots and make the story more authentic.
Reptile centers around the baffling murder of a young real estate agent and the complicated life of the detective on the case, and the cast and crew utilized a few cities on the East Coast to capture the movie's story. For a first feature, Grant Singer could certainly do worse than Reptile. The question remains whether Netflix is capable of allowing anything better than routine potboiler material to fill their trove of originally produced and distributed films. Much of the streamer studio’s output has been heavily underwhelming and this latest offering is no different, the only adhesive element Benicio Del Toro’s natural screen gravitas. When he plays a cop or detective, like his Oscar-winning turn in Steven Soderberg’s Traffic or Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario, it’s basically a cheat code.
Grant Singer’s best directorial decision in a film filled with clumsy ones is giving Del Toro as much real estate as possible, in many occasions having the entire screen filled by his visage––sad, squinted, glaring eyes look right at you through the dead-center of the frame. His voice, raspy and exhausted-sounding, talking under breath nearly the whole time,...

Times Square has little to no redeeming qualities. New York’s tourist hotspot is congested and chaotic — but it’s also an advertising magnet of bright lights and giant visual displays. When Spotify plasters LED billboards across the area promoting new music releases, fans and artists alike flock to the area to catch a glimpse and snap pictures to share on social media. Sky Ferreira fans would love to partake in this kind of fandom activity, but her album releases have been seemingly deadlocked with Capitol Records since her debut record arrived a decade ago.

Julia Garner is still hung up on the Madonna biopic.
After being cast as the Material Girl pop icon in June 2022, the film was shelved by Universal in January 2023. Madonna, who co-wrote, produced, and is set to direct her own life story for the big screen, recently announced a world tour.
However, “Inventing Anna” alum Garner teased that’s not the end of Madonna’s biopic.
“I don’t want to tell too much,” Garner said to Entertainment Tonight. “I’m going to keep things…fingers crossed.”
Garner reportedly endured an intense audition process to land the role of Madonna. The so-called boot camp was also attended by Florence Pugh, Alexa Demie, Odessa Young, and Emma Laird, with singers Bebe Rexha and Sky Ferreira also having previously been considered for the lead part. Julia Fox was rumored to be cast as Madonna’s longtime friend and fellow actress Debi Mazar.

There's no telling who's on the other side of the computer screen, and Vertical Entertainment's new horror film, Alone At Night, emphasizes this notion through a young woman's online modeling career. When she begins to hear stories about a ruthless "crowbar killer," certain patterns make Vicky the obvious choice for his next target.

Madonna's life story apparently won't be getting the biopic treatment after all - at least not right now. On Jan. 24, multiple sources confirmed to Variety that the project, which was set to star "Inventing Anna" and "Ozark" actor Julia Garner, would not be moving forward after the "Like a Prayer" singer announced her world tour earlier in the month.
Since Madonna was set to direct the movie herself, it makes sense that she won't be available for the foreseeable future. According to the outlet, Madonna's "sole focus is the tour," which will keep her busy throughout 2023. However, insiders told Variety that the legendary pop star is still committed to making her biopic happen one day.
In June 2022, Variety reported that Garner was poised as the frontrunner for the iconic part, bypassing more than a dozen candidates being considered. Other Hollywood starlets who were reportedly in talks to play Madonna include Florence Pugh,...

"Ozark" star and award season darling Julia Garner was reportedly set to lead the film about the early days of the "Like a Prayer" singer's career, but multiple sources are now saying that the film is no more. Universal Pictures and reps for Madonna and Garner wouldn't comment, per Variety.
If the Madonna film is being shelved, it's a pretty confounding decision given its long and, for those who auditioned, apparently arduous path to production. Last June, Garner was announced as the film's lead, and the news was met with a sort of Hunger Games champion-level intrigue after The Hollywood Reporter revealed that the months-long audition process reportedly involved 11-hour choreography training sessions,...

Universal’s Madonna biopic – starring Julia Garner and directed by the singer herself – is not moving forward, a source with knowledge of the matter confirmed to TheWrap.
The news comes a week after the “Material Girl” singer announced a career-spanning, globe-trotting tour, raising speculation about the untitled film’s future. It has languished in development since 2020, when Madonna was set to direct and co-write with “Juno” scribe Diablo Cody. They completed the script in April 2021 despite rumors that Cody had exited the project, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Garner won the leading role in June 2022. The “Ozark” and “Inventing Anna” star was reportedly up against stars like Florence Pugh, Odessa Young, Alexa Demie, Sky Ferreira and Bebe Rexha during the months-long audition process.
