Scream might be the most iterated horror formula out there. Ever since Wes Craven’s masterpiece shook the horror world in 1996, everyone was trying to out-Scream Scream. Scribe Kevin Williamson tried to outdo himself with both I Know What You Did Last Summer and The Faculty. Germany dipped into the slasher pool with The Pool. Jamie Blanks helmed both Urban Legend and Valentine, two slasher classics indebted to Scream. The 1990s were something else if you were a slasher fan.

Director’s debut feature enters Beijing International Film Festival spotlight amid renewed global conversations on women’s rights
A century-old criminal case from Switzerland is at the center of Frieda’s Case, the debut feature from German-Swiss filmmaker Maria Brendle. The historical drama, set in 1904, follows the trial of Frieda Keller, a young seamstress accused of murdering her son. The case, and the laws surrounding it, cast a stark light on gender inequality, both past and present.
The film, which premiered at the Zurich Film Festival in October, is part of the main competition at the 15th Beijing International Film Festival this month. Actor-director Jiang Wen will lead the competition jury. Brendle, who co-wrote the script with Michèle Minelli and Robert Buchschwenter, said she was drawn to the project because of its continuing relevance beyond its immediate setting in early 20th-century St. Gallen.

The Los Angeles Film Festival has announced the world premiere of Richard Linklater's Bernie as the opening night film for the 2011 festival.
The film will kick off the festival on June 16 at Regal Cinemas Stadium 14 at L.A. Live. It is written by Skip Hollandsworth and director Linklater and stars Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine, and Matthew McConaughey.
The film follows a beloved mortician (Black) from a small Texas town, even winning over the town's richest, meanest widow (MacLaine). Even after Bernie commits a horrible crime, people still will not utter a bad word against him.
"We're thrilled to be opening the Festival with the world premiere of this delicious black comedy - a treat from one of the most original and exciting voices in independent film, Richard Linklater," said Festival director Rebecca Yeldham. "With its fabulous all-star cast, Bernie is a perfect stage setter for the incredible line-up of...
