‘Train to Busan’ Director Yeon Sang-ho’s ‘The Ugly’ to Hit Theaters in September
Image
Ugly things are scorned in The Ugly, a South Korean mystery thriller from Train to Busan writer-director Yeon Sang-ho.

Variety reports that Well Go USA has acquired North American rights to the film, setting a September 26 theatrical release date following its Toronto International Film Festival premiere next month.

Based on Yeon’s 2018 graphic novel Face, the movie stars Park Jeong-min (Decision to Leave) and Kwon Hae-hyo (Peninsula).

It follows Im Yeong-gyu, a master artisan who has been hand-carving beautiful, engraved seals despite having been born blind. One day, his son Dong-hwan receives a call from the police, informing them that Young-hee, their wife and mother, who disappeared 40 years ago, has been found as skeletal remains.

Upon hearing that the mother whose face he’s never known may have been murdered, Dong-hwan begins investigating her death with Su-jin, a producer who has been filming a documentary about Yeong-gyu. Through the memories...

12 Best K-Drama Remakes Of American Movies & TV Shows
Image
While the American entertainment industry has remade countless foreign shows and movies for its own domestic audience, this creative tendency is not a one-way process. The South Korean entertainment industry has similarly remade or based movies and shows off of plenty of American projects. This trend has certainly extended to K-dramas, or South Korean scripted television programming of any genre. The breadth in types of American movies and shows remade for South Korean audiences is wide, ranging from crime procedurals to comedic variety shows.

In many cases, the broader premises from the American source material carries over to their K-drama counterparts, with some shows even retaining similarly phonetic names. However, even the most devoted fans of the shows and movies being remade will be surprised to see where these reimagined series take the story. In more than one instance, the endings of the remakes are completely different from the source material,...

After much discussion, THR picks out the five features that are really turning heads at Filmart this year.

Valley of the Shadow of Death (Hong Kong)

Did You Know There's A K-Drama Remake Of HBO's Entourage?
Image
One of HBO's biggest original series in the 2000s was "Entourage," created by Doug Ellin in 2004 and loosely based on the up-and-coming experiences of executive producer Mark Wahlberg. The comedy series followed Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier), a breakout movie star whose close friends not-so-subtly rode the coattails of his success in Hollywood. After the show's eight-season run and feature film continuation, "Entourage" was remade for South Korean audiences in 2016 as a K-drama, or scripted Korean television show of any genre. Also titled "Entourage," the Korean version wasn't particularly successful with local audiences, but it remains an interesting watch, especially for fans of the HBO original series.

The Korean "Entourage" follows popular 20-something actor Cha Young-bin, who is accompanied by his three friends as he enjoys life in the spotlight. Young-bin is closely monitored by his agency's CEO Kim Eun-gab, who frequently clashes with Young-bin's childhood best friend and manager Lee Ho-jin.

Blackpink’s Jisoo Faces Criticism Over Zombie Drama Newtopia Performance: “Acting Is Really Not It”
Image
Why Is Blackpink’s Jisoo Facing Hate Over Newtopia Performance? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Blackpink’s Jisoo has recently made her highly-anticipated acting comeback with Newtopia. In the zombie drama, she co-stars Park Jung Min, a talented actor known for his rich choices of projects. However, the K-pop idol, on the other hand, is facing some criticism over her performance.

Back in 2021, when Jisoo first made her acting debut with a lead role in Snowdrop, she had to go through similar scrutiny. Although her chemistry with Jung Hae In was well-received, many criticized her dialogue-delivery skills. Many were curious to witness her progress in the new drama.

However, seems like the Flower singer has once again ignited a heated debate among her fans online. Earlier in January, when the trailer for Newtopia was first released, many were extremely unhappy with Jisoo’s performance, while others expected that it would eventually turn out to be good.

Newtopia Season 1 Review: Surviving Chaos with Humor and Heart
Image
At first glance, Newtopia is another addition to the ever-expanding universe of zombie narratives, but it quickly signals its intentions to disrupt expectations. The apocalypse unfolds in the gleaming towers of Seoul, where the undead are only beginning to stir. There’s a certain dissonance in how the show sets up its zombie crisis—rather than the traditional slow burn or gruesome immediacy, it’s presented as a chaotic mess, almost absurd in its simplicity.

What emerges is a striking tonal contradiction, as grotesque creatures claw their way through the world, but the show’s humor rises from the horror like a mischievous specter. It takes an almost farcical approach, leaning into slapstick rather than dread, where the zombies don’t so much terrify as they bewilder.

Yet the true twist lies in the unlikely romance of Jae-yoon and Young-ju, whose relationship—defined by long-distance insecurity and youthful angst—intersects with the deadly new world.

In Prime Video’s “Newtopia,” love doesn’t just survive the apocalypse — it thrives in it. The Korean series pairs Blackpink’s Jisoo and acclaimed actor Park Jeong-min in a romantic comedy with undead twists that’s being billed as a fresh take on the zombie genre.

If you like Squid Game, The 8 Show on Netflix is surprisingly similar
Image
For the past two decades, South Korean cinema has been in the spotlight of international attention. Indisputably, some of the best Korean films and shows are award-winners, and of course, focus on social issues.

Most of its cinematic themes are noted to be based on social stratification, social class issues, and the intensifying gap between the rich and poor. An obvious cinematic interweaving of social loss, inequality, and violence is getting a worldwide laud.

Apart from Parasite, the winner of Best Picture at the 92nd Academy Awards in 2020, Squid Game and The 8 Show are the famed shows that are surprisingly similar. The similarities are undeniable.

While watching The 8 Show, I myself got Squid Game’s vibes right from the first episode. There were eight contestants in a game show who were constantly being watched by some unseen spectators unknown to them. We get into those similarities below!

Uprising Review: Stunning Visuals Meet Powerful Storytelling
Image
In Uprising, directed by Kim Sang-man and co-written by Park Chan-wook, we explore a narrative that challenges standard storytelling conventions. This film, which premiered at the Busan International Film Festival and is now available on Netflix, is more than just a historical drama; it also reflects current cultural issues.

Set in the late 16th century Joseon Dynasty during the Imjin War, the film delves into the complex relationship between Cheon-yeong, a servant, and Jong-ryeo, a lord. Their childhood friendship serves as a lens through which to examine themes of loyalty and class struggle, echoing current discussions of privilege and power dynamics.

The nonlinear narrative style reflects the era’s chaos, encouraging viewers to recreate emotional journeys through flashbacks. This complexity resonates with the storytelling approaches of directors such as Noah Baumbach, who enhance the dramatic stakes of the film. Ju Sung-lim’s cinematography captures Korea’s haunting beauty, while a...

Uprising Ending Explained: Who Wins the Final Sword Fight?
Image
Director Kim Sang-man’s Uprising is a historical epic on a human scale. At the start, Cheon-yeong (Gang Dong-won) and Yi Jong-ryeo (Park Jeong-min) are unlikely friends — the former forced into slavery by family debt, the latter the privileged scion of Cheon-yeong’s new owners. This family of the deputy minister of defense expects the lumbering Jong-ryeo to become a military officer, so the adroit swordsman Cheon-yeong is enlisted as his fighting tutor, and they become something like brothers.

When the two reach adulthood, Japan invades the Korean Peninsula, the Joseon Dynasty begins to fracture, and the furious lower classes burn down Gyeongbokgung palace. In the scuffle, Jong-ryeo’s wife takes her and her child’s lives rather than be helped by Cheon-yeong — a “brute.” Based on bad intel, Jong-ryeo blames the impudent Cheon-yeong for their deaths and swears revenge as both men wander the country, fighting the Japanese...

Netflix’s Uprising Explores the Imjin War and the Fight for Freedom in Joseon
Gang Dong-won in Peninsula (2020)
Uprising is Netflix’s latest Korean action-war epic that takes viewers on a historical journey, spotlighting the friendship between two men from different social classes. Set against the backdrop of late 16th century Joseon during the Imjin War, the film chronicles the relationship between Cheon-yeong, a skilled nobi (slave) played by Broker’s Gang Dong-won, and Jong-ryeo, the privileged son of a noble family, portrayed by Park Jeong-min (The 8 Show). Despite growing up together, their friendship is shaped by the rigid class system that governs their lives, reflecting the deep-rooted societal inequalities of the time.

The Imjin War: A Catalyst for Conflict

In 1592, Japan, under the rule of warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi, launched an invasion of Korea, setting off the seven-year Imjin War. The conflict, though primarily a military struggle, had deep social consequences for the Korean Peninsula, which was then under the rule of the Joseon Dynasty. At the...

After working with some of the top directors in the region like South Korea’s Yeon Sang-ho and Japan’s Hirokazu Kore-eda, Uprising‘s Gang Dong-won told Deadline that he would like to work with directors Bong Joon-ho and Guillermo del Toro in the future, among others.

In Uprising, Gang plays a slave named Cheon-yeong, who develops a close friendship with his master (and nobleman) Jong-ryeo, who is played by Park Jeong-min.

Uprising premiered on Netflix this week after screening as the opening film at the Busan International Film Festival (Biff).

Netflix’s Uprising is set in 1592, against the backdrop of Joseon’s war against Japanese invasions. King Seonjo flees the capital to escape from the advancing Japanese army.

Gang got involved in the film after veteran director Park Chan-wook — who co-wrote Uprising with Shin Cheol — gave him a call. Gang admitted that he was curious about the project...

‘Uprising’ Netflix Review: Korean Period Drama Might Give You A Headache
Image
Don’t get me wrong, the second I see the name Park Chan-Wook, I’m sat up, but I had a really hard time sitting through the new film he co-wrote, Uprising. I think it’s something like when your thoughts and your words don’t match; we all know that the man is terrific at making convoluted films with fantastic twists, but when the job of presenting the story is someone else’s, there’s a chance it won’t land in the same way. Not everyone’s execution is the same, and that’s the gap that makes Uprising a little bit difficult to watch. But, at the same time, if you’re a fan of some bloodshed and cool action shots, then Uprising might be right up your alley. The film tells a story of brotherhood and friendship in the Joseon period. Cheon-Yeong is enslaved to be...
