Exclusive: Issa Rae Sued, Writers Say “One Of Them Days” Is Rip-Off
Image
Issa Rae is getting dragged into court after three Los Angeles creatives say her movie “One of Them Days” is lifted from their original screenplay.

Writers Joshua Isaacson, Shon Oku and Tyrone Perry claim they penned a script back in 2020 called One of Those Days and registered the copyright. Fast forward to 2025, and they say Rae’s team dropped a flick with a nearly identical title and a storyline that hits way too close to home.

The trio filed their lawsuit on July 30, naming Issa Rae’s company Color Creative, Sony Pictures, TriStar and screenwriter Syreeta Singleton. They’re accusing them of copyright infringement, idea theft, and conversion—basically saying Rae and crew jacked their story and ran with it like it was theirs.

According to court docs, the writers say they shared their screenplay with producer Danny Hamouie in late 2023, the first time anyone outside of the trio had ever seen the script.

Jia Zhang-ke’s elegiac and poetic feature revolves around a woman (Zhao Tao) who journeys from her home in a fading industrial city in search of a vanished former boyfriend. The movie looks back on China’s recent history, but also on Jia’s filmography, echoing themes, geographical features, techniques and structural elements while incorporating footage shot at various intervals from 2001 through 2023 — an approach that gives it a kind of kinship with Richard Linklater’s Boyhood. — David Rooney

Ghost Trail

Centering on a Syrian exile tracking down his former torturer in France, Jonathan Millet’s film is a work of visceral intensity and formidable control. Millet has a shrewd grasp of paranoid-thriller mechanics; a refreshing preference for intimacy and clarity over distancing stylistic or narrative fussiness; and two fantastic actors: soulful, movie-star-magnetic lead Adam Bessa and Tawfeek Barhom as a villain whose humanity is the most chilling thing about him.

Image
Keke Palmer is a huge draw, and her latest project proves that. Early this year, she released her buddy comedy One of Them Days, which was a major critical and commercial hit.

The buddy comedy marked hip-hop star Sza's acting debut, and the two of them did magic together. Following a very successful theatrical run at the beginning of the year, the movie is now a hit on Netflix as well, Tudum reports.

One of Them Days premiered on Netflix on Apr. 2 and for the week between Mar. 31 to Apr. 6, the movie amassed 7.7 million views and 12.4 million hours viewed. It was enough to send it straight to charts, and it debuted in second place before the previous week's chart-topper The Life List, which added 29.2 million more views after its initial 24.4 million views.

The numbers are even more impressive when one realizes that One of Them Days is only available to stream on Netflix U.

Which is one of the funniest films on Netflix in 2025?(Photo Credit –Instagram)

One of Them Days premiered in January this year, and sparked a wave of praise for its wild plot, quick-fire laughs, and pitch-perfect duo at the center of it all. Set in a frantic 24-hour timeline, One of Them Days followed best friends and roommates Dreux (Keke Palmer) and Alyssa (Sza), who discovered Alyssa’s slacker boyfriend had blown their rent money. The Actor (Duke Johnson)

For as much light as The Actor is bathed in, it’s equally shrouded in darkness. Duke Johnson’s solo directorial debut is a film of bleary sun and swallowing night and almost nothing in-between. It wouldn’t make sense to depict the in-between. That would be realistic, and The Actor is anything but real. Jubilant strings swell over vintage opening credits as we peer at the peaks of skyscrapers in a still, top-of-the-cityscape shot not too dissimilar from the angle we get on Saffron City in the original Super Smash Bros. The twinkling black-and-white image has a glowy 1950s TV-hour charm, the text surrounded by mid-century atomic sparkle logos (see: poster). It transitions neatly into the doomy...

During an interview with Jennifer Hudson on The Jennifer Hudson Show, Sza told the talk show host and Dreamgirls actress she wants to play Ororo Monroe, aka Storm, for the MCU.

SZA
Sza has hinted at the possibility of a sequel to One of Them Days, though she jokingly speculated that her co-star, Keke Palmer, may not be as eager for a return.

During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Sza was asked whether there were any discussions about continuing the story from the R-rated buddy comedy. Initially hesitant, she then quipped, “Keke’s tired of me. She’s gotta be.” Despite the playful remark, the singer expressed enthusiasm about reuniting with the creative team behind the film. “She’s chock-full of energy. I would be so honored to be involved in anything that they did again. I would just literally try way harder knowing what’s at stake; people will be watching, and I can play into that.”

Box Office Round-Up: 'Dog Man' Wins Box Office Over 'Companion'
Image
Punxsutawney Phil may have overshadowed the headlines, but it was a pair of newcomers making all the noise at the box office over the weekend. However, it turned out to be No. 1 Dog Man easily outperforming Companion to win the top spot en route to opening the month of February. Director Peter Hastings’ animated superhero comedy made an estimated $36 million domestically, while the new horror rom-com settled for the silver medal with only $9.5 million (per The Numbers).

Companion posted superior numbers on Rotten Tomatoes with both the critics ("Certified Fresh" 94% on the Tomatometer) and fans, whose reactions have already led to the unique horror rom-com being “Verified Hot” on the Popcornmeter (91%), formerly the Rt audience score, against 500+ratings. Meanwhile, Dog Man only registered 76% on the Tomatometer and 86% on the Popcornmeter.

However, fans’ reactions coming right out of the multiplexes corroborated why Dog Man did so well financially over its opening weekend.

It's hard to describe what it feels like living in Los Angeles right now. For the uninformed, a series of fires have marred huge swaths of the city, with buildings being burned down and even lives being lost as brave firefighters worked to contain flames that spent days tearing through people's homes. It's a devastating series of events that has shaken the entire community, and it may have made many locals (like this author) nervous to watch Lawrence Lamont's new comedy, One of Them Days. Following a pair of roommates racing around Los Angeles trying to recover their lost rent money, the film promised a cinematic version of LA that those recovering from this disaster may not be too enthused to see.

It's 'One of Them Days' for 'Mufasa: The Lion King' and 'Wolf Man' as They Get Overtaken at Domestic Box Office
Image
After out-performing the high-profile horror film Wolf Man in its opening weekend of release, Sony's comedy offering One of Them Days pulled off another surprise win at the domestic box office. The movie topped the charts on Discount Tuesday, beating out not only Wolf Man, but also the holdover hit Mufasa: The Lion King. In doing so, the film also hit a new domestic milestone, on the back of tremendous reviews and an enthusiastic audience response. One of Them Days is directed by Lawrence Lamont and follows two friends who go on a race against time to avoid being evicted from their house.

'One of Them Days' Starts Strong at the Domestic Box Office
Image
Despite the possibility of running under many people's radar, Lawrence Lamont's female buddy comedy One of Them Days has proven the doubters wrong with a strong start at the 2025 box office. Opening in 2,402 theaters on Thursday and widening to 2,675 on the weekend, One of Them Days has stolen the limelight away from the likes of Mufasa: The Lion King, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and even the brand-new Wolf Man to take the top spot overall over the weekend's domestic box office.

Box Office: ‘Mufasa,’ ‘One of Them Days’ Maul ‘Wolf Man’ Over Slow MLK Holiday Weekend
Image
Mufasa: The Lion King continues to find its footing at the box office, where it beat the openings of One of Them Days — the first female-led Black comedy since 2017’s Girls Trip — and Wolf Man over the long Martin Luther King Jr. holiday despite being in its fifth weekend.

The bad news overall: it was one of the lowest MLK weekends in years as Hollywood and theaters face another slowdown in event product for the time being.

Mufasa won the official four-day holiday with an estimated $15.5 million as it celebrated becoming only the second film in 15 years to jump the $200 million domestically despite opening to less than $40 million (it opened the weekend before Christmas. Through Monday, the origin pic has earned $209.8 million domestically and $382.2 million overseas dfor a global total of $592 million. While there’s no chance it will ever match 2019’s The Lion King ($1.66 billion), it’s staying power hasn’t gone unnoticed.

‘One of Them Days’ Team Hopes the Film Opens Doors for More Black Stories in Hollywood
Image
As “One of Them Days” finally hit theaters this weekend, its creative team, including writer Syreeta Singleton, director Lawrence Lamont and producers Issa Rae and Deniese Davis, hope the Black duo comedy encourages Hollywood studios to support more Black stories — especially given the long and challenging road it took to get their film made.

“There’s constantly things that we have to overcome to make a movie theatrical and to ensure that, by the studio standards, people will go to see it,” Rae told TheWrap, sharing the same sentiments as Davis, her producing and business partner, who urged film lovers to head to theaters for the film. “That’s why Deniese is saying it is so important for people to buy these tickets, because it’ll prove that there is a demand for these type of movies. And then the onus, of course, being Black filmmakers and also having Black female leads is that,...

‘I’m Still Here’ starring Fernanda Torres scores strong limited debut at US box office
Image
Brazilian historical drama I’m Still Here starring Golden Globe winner Fernanda Torres debuted to an excellent $25,082 per-screen average in a low-grossing Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend at the US box office.

Released through Sony Pictures Classics, Walter Salles’ drama about a matriarch whose husband disappears during the Brazilian dictatorship in 1970 earned $125,409 on five screens, rising to a $153,078 running total.

Disney reported that Mufasa: The Lion King is projected to gross $15.5m over four days and will stand at $209.8m after five weekends.

That would see it reclaim number one in its fifth weekend, ahead ofSony/TriStar’s female-led R-rated comedy One Of Them Days,...

‘Mufasa’ Keeps Crown as Keke Palmer’s ‘One of Them Days’ Beats ‘Wolf Man’ in Box Office Surprise
Image
Heading into the long weekend, Universal’s “Wolf Man” reboot was projected to climb to No. 1 on domestic box office charts. Yet Sony’s “One of Them Days,” an R-rated buddy comedy starring Keke Palmer and Sza, may have the last laugh.

“One of Them Days” opened at No. 2 on the higher end of expectations with $11.6 million from 2,675 North American venues over the weekend and an estimated $14 million through the extended Martin Luther King Jr. holiday frame. Against a trim $14 million budget, the well-reviewed funny film is shaping up to be a major commercial win for Sony. Meanwhile “Wolf Man” debuted below forecasts, in third place with $10.5 million from 3,354 theaters over the weekend and an estimated $12 million through the holiday on Monday. The movie cost just $25 million to produce, which should be a relief to the studio because critics and audiences weren’t fans of the horror remake. “Wolf Man...

Keke Palmer's New Comedy Breaks An 11-Year-Old Rotten Tomatoes Record Even Two Recent Acclaimed Hits Couldn't
Image
Keke Palmer's new comedy One of Them Days has broken a Rotten Tomatoes record. The movie, which was produced by Insecure's Issa Rae, was directed by Lawrence Lamont (who previously collaborated with Rae on Max's Rap Sh!t) from the debut screenplay by Syreeta Singleton (who was the showrunner of Rap Sh!t). It co-stars Palmer and singer-songwriter Sza as best friends Dreux and Alyssa alongside an ensemble cast that includes Vanessa Bell Calloway, Maude Apatow, Katt Williams, Dewayne Perkins, Lil Rel Howery, and Janelle James.

The new Keke Palmer movie is the latest in a string of prominent projects for the actor, who kicked off her career in the mid 2000s and first rose to prominence when she starred opposite Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett in 2006's Akeelah and the Bee. She parlayed this success as a child actor into roles in projects such as Disney's Jump In! and Nickelodeon's True Jackson,...

Wolf Man barks at the moon with $1.4M in previews as theaters brace for a sleepy MLK weekend
Image
Martin Luther King Jr. weekend is upon us, though people looking to celebrate could have other plans than heading to cinemas. How do we know this? The starting totals for two brand-new movies are off to a grim start. Then again, we’ve been surprised by dark horses before. Analysts said Leigh Whannell’s body horror film Wolf Man howled during Thursday previews with $1.4M, while Lawrence Lamont’s comedy, One of Them Days, led by Keke Palmer and Sza, banked $1.3M.

Wolf Man comes in low out of the gate. Still, the Blumhouse feature only cost $25M to produce before promotional materials. The horror movie starring Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner could transform its 4-day holiday weekend total into $20M, but only if people show up. Wolf Man‘s Thursday total is slightly surprising, given the success of Whannell’s 2020 psychological thriller The Invisible Man, which earned a global...

‘One Of Them Days’ Review: Keke Palmer-Sza Physical Comedy Highlights Pure Comic Premise
Image
One of Them Days is the kind of comedy Hollywood used to make regularly. The film keeps the premise simple and trusts the characters to react in funny ways. Even though it is more of a rarity in today’s IP landscape, One of Them Days proves that comedy especially need not be overthought.

Dreux (Keke Palmer) works night shifts at Norm’s diner and is trying for a promotion to franchise manager. Her roommate, Alyssa (Sza), is an artist with no income. When Alyssa’s boyfriend, Keshawn (Joshua David Neal) steals their rent money for his own hare-brained scheme, their landlord, Uche (Rizi Timane), threatens to evict them if they don’t have $1,500 by 6 p.m.

That premise is no high-concept sensation. Rather, it is the simple premise that fueled many of the great comedies. They need X amount of money by X time. Happy Gilmore played golf to raise enough money.

One Of Them Days – Review
Image
So what’s the cinema antidote to the brutal and frozen tundra outside our doors (and let’s not get into the West Coast)? How about a raunchy, rollicking buddy comedy? Hmm, that’s usually Summer popcorn fodder, but that’s not the only “rule” that this new flick is breaking. Rather than two mismatched male comic actors, this focuses on the friendship (though strained at times) of two twenty-something African American women. That’s a nice “flip”, along with the pairing of a screen “vet” and a star from the world of hip hop (and R&b/pop). Now that’s a combo sure to end those winter doldrums, along with its “Cali” backdrop. So that’s the setting, as the principals frantically try to survive a zany twenty-four hours that certainly qualifies as One Of Them Days that will put their bond to the test.

It’s the...
