Issa Rae is getting dragged into court after three Los Angeles creatives say her movie “One of Them Days” is lifted from their original screenplay.

Writers Joshua Isaacson, Shon Oku and Tyrone Perry claim they penned a script back in 2020 called One of Those Days and registered the copyright. Fast forward to 2025, and they say Rae’s team dropped a flick with a nearly identical title and a storyline that hits way too close to home.

The trio filed their lawsuit on July 30, naming Issa Rae’s company Color Creative, Sony Pictures, TriStar and screenwriter Syreeta Singleton. They’re accusing them of copyright infringement, idea theft, and conversion—basically saying Rae and crew jacked their story and ran with it like it was theirs.

According to court docs, the writers say they shared their screenplay with producer Danny Hamouie in late 2023, the first time anyone outside of the trio had ever seen the script.

The buddy comedy marked hip-hop star Sza's acting debut, and the two of them did magic together. Following a very successful theatrical run at the beginning of the year, the movie is now a hit on Netflix as well, Tudum reports.

One of Them Days premiered on Netflix on Apr. 2 and for the week between Mar. 31 to Apr. 6, the movie amassed 7.7 million views and 12.4 million hours viewed. Brazilian historical drama I’m Still Here starring Golden Globe winner Fernanda Torres debuted to an excellent $25,082 per-screen average in a low-grossing Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend at the US box office.

Released through Sony Pictures Classics, Walter Salles’ drama about a matriarch whose husband disappears during the Brazilian dictatorship in 1970 earned $125,409 on five screens, rising to a $153,078 running total.

Disney reported that Mufasa: The Lion King is projected to gross $15.5m over four days and will stand at $209.8m after five weekends.

Keke Palmer's new comedy One of Them Days has broken a Rotten Tomatoes record. The movie, which was produced by Insecure's Issa Rae, was directed by Lawrence Lamont (who previously collaborated with Rae on Max's Rap Sh!t) from the debut screenplay by Syreeta Singleton (who was the showrunner of Rap Sh!t). It co-stars Palmer and singer-songwriter Sza as best friends Dreux and Alyssa alongside an ensemble cast that includes Vanessa Bell Calloway, Maude Apatow, Katt Williams, Dewayne Perkins, Lil Rel Howery, and Janelle James.

The cast of HBO’s critically praised television series Insecure is supporting by hosting a free screening of the new comedy film One of Them Days for people in Los Angeles impacted by the current wildfires. The event, which will take place on Saturday at 2 p.m. at AMC The Grove 14, will give those going through tough times “a moment of levity.”

At least 25 people have died as a result of the wildfires, and more than 105,000 people have been forced to leave their homes in Los Angeles County. The film’s premiere in Hollywood, set for January 13, was canceled due to the crisis. This led the cast to create a community-focused event.

The cast of HBO‘s Insecure will reunite to host a free screening of the new Keke Palmer/Sza buddy comedy on Saturday at 2pm at AMC The Grove 14 “for a moment of levity” for those impacted by the recent Los Angeles County wildfires.

“My @insecurehbo family! My community for life! Thank you!” wrote Rae on her Instagram Story, sharing a flier posted by her Insecure co-star Yvonne Orji, which reads: “We know the city is hurtin’ so we got y’all!”

Jay Ellis also shared the announcement, writing: “LA if you need a minute to take a break from it all… have a laugh on us.” Natasha Rothwell posted the flier as well, while co-star Kendrick Sampson and showrunner Prentice Penny praised the movie on social media.

Martin Luther King Jr. weekend is upon us, though people looking to celebrate could have other plans than heading to cinemas. How do we know this? The starting totals for two brand-new movies are off to a grim start. Then again, we’ve been surprised by dark horses before. Analysts said Leigh Whannell’s body horror film Wolf Man howled during Thursday previews with $1.4M, while Lawrence Lamont’s comedy, One of Them Days, led by Keke Palmer and Sza, banked $1.3M.

Wolf Man comes in low out of the gate. Still, the Blumhouse feature only cost $25M to produce before promotional materials. The horror movie starring Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner could transform its 4-day holiday weekend total into $20M, but only if people show up. One of Them Days is the kind of comedy Hollywood used to make regularly. The film keeps the premise simple and trusts the characters to react in funny ways. Even though it is more of a rarity in today’s IP landscape, One of Them Days proves that comedy especially need not be overthought.

Dreux (Keke Palmer) works night shifts at Norm’s diner and is trying for a promotion to franchise manager. Her roommate, Alyssa (Sza), is an artist with no income. When Alyssa’s boyfriend, Keshawn (Joshua David Neal) steals their rent money for his own hare-brained scheme, their landlord, Uche (Rizi Timane), threatens to evict them if they don’t have $1,500 by 6 p.m.

That premise is no high-concept sensation. Rather, it is the simple premise that fueled many of the great comedies. They need X amount of money by X time. Happy Gilmore played golf to raise enough money.

So what’s the cinema antidote to the brutal and frozen tundra outside our doors (and let’s not get into the West Coast)? How about a raunchy, rollicking buddy comedy? Hmm, that’s usually Summer popcorn fodder, but that’s not the only “rule” that this new flick is breaking. Rather than two mismatched male comic actors, this focuses on the friendship (though strained at times) of two twenty-something African American women. That’s a nice “flip”, along with the pairing of a screen “vet” and a star from the world of hip hop (and R&b/pop). Now that’s a combo sure to end those winter doldrums, along with its “Cali” backdrop. So that’s the setting, as the principals frantically try to survive a zany twenty-four hours that certainly qualifies as One Of Them Days that will put their bond to the test.
