Young Jedi Adventures comic set to release this December
Image
Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures is a lively, animated children's series available on Disney+. Set in the High Republic era, centuries before the Skywalker Saga, it's also one of the first and only Star Wars shows aimed at preschoolers. It's designed to introduce younger audiences to the galaxy far, far away in a fun, age-appropriate way.

Maybe it's Disney's attempt to snag the next generation of fans at a young age, locking them in for a lifetime of Star Wars entertainment, but as a parent of a two-year-old, I'm not complaining. I've sat through my fair share of children's shows, and Young Jedi Adventures is among the best of them. Besides, who wants to watch Cocomelon or Ms. Rachel for the hundredth time?

And if you don't know what those are...just wait.

Young Jedi Adventures is a light, positive, and morally driven children's cartoon with a heavy focus on friendship,...

The Siege of Mandalore was the end of an era in more ways than one
Image
While many of us may have purposefully forgotten much of the year 2020, the end of Star Wars: The Clone Wars is one of few highlights that remain fresh in our minds even five years later.

The seventh and final season of the show premiered on Disney+ on February 21, and played out over 12 episodes divided into three four-episode story arcs. The final arc, collectively reffered to as The Siege of Mandalore, ended -- along with the series -- on May 4, 2020.

These four episodes -- "Old Friends Not Forgotten," "The Phantom Apprentice," "Shattered," and "Victory and Death" -- are so unique and cinematic that many fans consider them almost like a movie. Star Wars Celebration 2022 even hosted a Siege of Mandalore panel that began with a showing of all four episodes played in a row for a very large audience. Dave Filoni was there. We all cried.

Rewatching this arc again recently,...

Young Jedi Adventures is a 3 time Emmy winner
Image
Who would have thought that the preschool series would be the awards darling?

Young Jedi Adventures is now a three-time Emmy Award winner. It was the back-to-back champion at the 3rd Children’s and Family Emmys, winning the category of Outstanding Sound Mixing and Sound Editing for a Preschool Animated Program after snagging this category in 2023. It beat out Santiago of the Seas, Shape Island, Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum, and the ever-popular Baby Shark's Big Movie! I know my nieces and nephews are obsessed with Baby Shark, so this series beating such a popular program is no small feat.

Via The Hollywood Reporter, the show was nominated for three other categories including Music Direction and Composition for an Animated Program, Voice Directing for an Animated Series, and Editing for a Preschool Animated Program. That last category was Young Jedi Adventures' second win in 2023, but it lost out this...

Young Jedi Adventures Recap: Attack of the Training Droids
Image
Young Jedi Adventures episode "Attack of the Training Droids" opens on the Jedi temple on Tenoo, where our favorite Jedi younglings are practicing their lightsaber skills against a training droid. Their goal is to hit the beacon on top of the bot before a timer goes off. Jedi Masters Yoda and Zia Zanna look on the practice session.

Each of the younglings fails in their separate attempts. Lys Solay suggests waiting for an opening, but Kai Brightstar doesn't think there is enough time. So he will make an opening! Rushing in without thinking, Kai fumbles, taking out Lys and Nubs with him. The time goes off, and they have failed the training.

Yoda tells them it's not about how fast they can perform a task. He decides to show them, handing his gimer stick to Zia. He waits for the droid to attack him, pulling his lightsaber to fight back.

Young Jedi Adventures: 5 best moments of Season 2
Image
Young Jedi Adventures returned for a second season in August 2024, and I looked forward to it. Having gotten on board with Kai, Brightstar Lys Solay, and Nubs and self-identifying as a green-eyed adventurer with red hair like Nash Durango, I looked forward to seeing what came next.

Here are the 5 best moments of Young Jedi Adventures Season 2.1. Nubs-tacle Course

This short, released before the rest of the season, shows Nubs in a familiar situation. Nubs is my favorite for his tendency to work through discouragement and this was no exception. He tries his best to excel or even complete an obstacle course that comes easily to Kai Brightstar. He gives in to understandable frustration when persistence doesn't pay off. In the end, he is able to stay calm and use his trust in the Force to succeed but then refuses to do it again. I could definitely relate.

2. The Prince...

Every Star Wars Emmy Award and nomination explained

Caravan of Courage at 40: A story of kindness leaves a mark
Image
As much as I love Star Wars, it was not much of a part of my childhood. I saw the original trilogy one long Saturday when I was thirteen and was hooked as soon as Darth Vader arrived on the screen. But I had the luck to first meet the Ewoks in the 1985 film Ewoks: The Battle for Endor. However, I had never seen Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure until recently. With the film turning 40 this year, let's look back on it with an adult fan's appreciation for childlike wonder.

Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure is a delight for new fans 40 years later

The message I remember from The Battle of Endor is that bravery is important, but you don't have to be brave on your own. I gleaned the same meaning from Caravan of Courage and love it. The story is by George Lucas, so it feels...

Sorry May the Fourth, you're great if I want to go into credit card debt with all the new merchandise dropped that day. I adore Life Day. It's wonderful with the memes, the gifs of a hyper smiling Wookiee kid, and Luke Skywalker looking like a knock-off Ellen DeGeneres.

Because I unironically love The Star Wars Holiday Special.

I'm not ignoring the warts of the show by any means. The production is filled with blackface, actors almost dying on set, and Grandpa Wookiee looking at "adult content." The fantastic documentary and companion novel A Disturbance in the Force: How and Why the Star Wars Holiday Special Happened details every ugly step by people who love it and the franchise. The history of our fandom should be studied, even the worst parts.

Everything Star Wars Canon Has Revealed About Master Yoda's Origins & History
Image
Master Yoda remains a fairly mysterious figure in Star Wars, but the franchise has revealed these canonical facts about him. Few Jedi in Star Wars movies and TV shows have the legacy Yoda does. In addition to being one of Star Wars' most powerful Jedi, Yoda was a highly respected and even revered Jedi Master who served on the Jedi Council for centuries.

The exact details of even that history are unknown, however, as there are only estimates and hints regarding how long Yoda was on the Jedi Council. Likewise, Master Yoda's Star Wars species remains a mystery in the franchise, which was very intentional by George Lucas, who didn't want the details regarding this species to be known. It's evident that Star Wars wants to maintain Yoda's status as a bit of an enigma, but Star Wars canon has revealed some details about the curious Jedi Master's origins.

Young Jedi Adventures Recap: Lys and the Snowy Mountain Rescue
Image
Young Jedi Adventures "Lys and the Snowy Mountain Rescue" opens with our favorite Jedi younglings on the snowy planet of Andraven. In a small town, they ride on wellagrins, which look like space seals with horns on their heads. They're joined by two other Andraven kids named Gumar and Jam along with the wellagrin trainer, Varna.

Lys Solay, always the best with animals, is particularly doing well with wellagrin riding. She adores meeting new creatures all the time! Nubs and Kai Brightstar aren't doing as well, but their critters still seem to like them. Varna gets a call from Jedi Master Zia Zanna, who is grateful for the Andravens inviting the younglings for the wellagrin migrations. The group will take them to the other side of the mountain to new orchards. The kids need to stay close to the trail to avoid avalanches and also get there before dark before it's stormy at night.

Young Jedi Adventures recap: The Junk Giant
Image
The Young Jedi Adventures episode "The Junk Giant" opens with our Jedi Younglings and their friend Nash Durango in town in Kublop Springs at the Hap Sap Tap getting milkshakes from the owner, Hap. There is a statue of a woman just outside of the restaurant, and Lys Solay asks Nash who she is.

It's Kaliah Kublop, the founder of the town and supposedly the first person to explore Tenoo. Suddenly nearby, a Chadra-Fan named Marlaa is in such a hurry that she trips and spills fruit everywhere. Nash introduces the Jedi to the woman who owns a local junkyard.

Marlaa is rushing because there's a thief stealing from her business. The Jedi volunteer to help catch the thief, which Marlaa welcomes. They arrive at the junkyard, and Marlaa explains that her junk is beautiful, something that Kai Brightstar finds strange. But Marlaa explains that it can be turned into...

Young Jedi Adventures recap: Get Well Nubs
Image
We open the Young Jedi Adventures episode "Get Well Nubs" with Kai Brightstar and Lys Solay eating breakfast in the temple's cafeteria. They have a class trip that afternoon to the Kublop Geyser, but they realize their friend Nubs is missing.

They find Nubs in his room, and oh no! He's sick and shouldn't go on the trip. Kai and Lys don't want to leave their friend behind. Nubs suggest them find a Yara plant, which can help someone with a cold when its brewed in a tea. It's on top of a faraway tree so they need to get there fast to make it back in time for the class trip!

They check in with Master Zia Zanna, who is a bit nervous that it's just the two younglings together. She gives them each direction: for Lys to stay in the present and focus while Kai needs to slow...

Sorry, Nubs Nation! The best Young Jedi Adventures character is the capitalist bird man
Image
Young Jedi Adventures has been quite a surprise delight. When the preschool series set in The High Republic was announced, it was a big deal. It would be the first time this new era would be on screen. When all the promotional material was released, everyone instantly fell in love with the blue Pooba Jedi Nubs, voiced by Dee Bradley Baker. Nubs Nation was instantly born!

However, as I watched the show, I could agree that Nubs was a fun little character. He was funny, charming, fuzzy, and just the sweetest little guy. That was until the sixth episode, "Forest Defenders."

In the episode, Nubs and his friends Kai Brightstar and Lys Solay are excited to see this beautiful forest on the planet of Federian. When they get there, they're shocked to discover that the forest's animals are losing their homes to a big harvester! And the person behind the deforestation is Raxlo,...

Young Jedi Adventures recap: The Lost Jedi Ship

We open Young Jedi Adventures' "The Lost Jedi Ship" on Tenoo with Master Zia taking the Jedi younglings to the Jedi Temple's library. She tells them that since their temple is so old, there are still rooms they're discovering as they slowly fix it up. The kids are excited and scatter about the room when they get in.

Kai Brightstar stumbles, pulling some books off the shelf. On the other side where it has been blocked off, he see a light coming out of the wall behind the shelf. There are some rock blocking the light and what looks to be a secret room. His friends Nubs and Lys Solay join him, wanting to see what it is. Working together, the move the rocks with the Force.

Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy is a great stepping stone for younglings
Image
In my opinion, Star Wars is doing great things for the youth of the fandom.

I'm not just a fan of Young Jedi Adventures because of the ability I had this year to get two nieces and a nephew into the adventures of Kai, Lys, and Nubs. I think it's important for there to be role models in any franchise and the students on Tenoo are just one example. When I watched and enjoyed Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy, it struck me that the new series is something I can look forward to showing them when they've got a little more experience in life.

Part of what I love about Young Jedi Adventures is its low-stakes nature. There are stressors, certainly, but there is always a way for teamwork or understanding to bring about a win for the protagonists and their friends. It's so charming to me that I...

Star Wars Just Gave Me The What If? Story I've Always Wanted... & I Want More!
Image
Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy provides a Star Wars What If? story, and I want more of it. Rebuild the Galaxy proved to be an incredibly fun way of exploring alternate versions of the Star Wars movies and TV shows. The story centers around a character named Sig who finds a special cornerstone that completely dismantles the galaxy and rebuilds it as a new version of Star Wars' timeline.

Naturally, this allowed the self-referential tendencies of Lego movies and TV shows to shine through in a way upcoming Star Wars movies would not be able to. Atop being an incredibly fun story that I found to be heartwarming and hilarious, Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy also scratched an itch I have had regarding the franchise for years. Via its story that plays with the conventions of the best and worst of Star Wars movies, Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy...

44 Years Later, Star Wars Doubles Down On The Answer To Yoda's Empire Strikes Back Mystery
Image
Via Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy, the franchise has doubled down on the biggest Yoda mystery from The Empire Strikes Back. Rebuild the Galaxy is a Star Wars TV show that consists of four episodes, telling a story set in an alternate galaxy. Thanks to this intriguing setup, the miniseries humorously plays on the established characters, planets, plot points, and theories of the galaxy in a way upcoming Star Wars TV shows could not.

As a meta, self-referential story, Rebuild the Galaxy makes references to both the best and worst-ranked Star Wars movies in the franchise. The miniseries plays on the ideas of different established characters in intriguing ways, often culminating in humorous jokes as Lego installments tend to. With all areas of Star Wars' complete timeline being referenced, connections to other movies are found. In one such reference, Star Wars reiterates the answer to a Yoda mystery stretching back over four decades.

Familiar Star Wars characters and species appear in Young Jedi Adventures
Image
Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures is an animated series suitable for very young audiences. You may have seen Yoda’s delightful green smirk on posters or in other advertisements, however he is actually not one of the main characters in the television series that airs on both Disney Jr. and Disney Plus. Younglings Kai, Lys, and Nubs are the primary protagonists.

The showrunner wisely took advantage of Yoda’s “star power”, which, in terms of drawing in viewers, is certainly an important factor with the success of the pre-schooler appropriate Disney/Lucasfilm collaboration. There was a similar design when Star Wars: The Clone Wars was produced 20 years ago (although other famous Jedi are also in that series), while Yoda’s ratio of actual appearances throughout the Clone Wars seasons are comparable to Young Jedi Adventures.

Just like his absence for large chunks of The Clone Wars chronicles, the Master Jedi...

Disney cutting back on Star Wars TV could be a long term problem
Image
There's a point in every baseball season when I have to talk myself as a Red Sox fan out of feeling like all is lost. We can't tell this early on if, in the end, the result will make us groan at the end of the season. We've seen our team overcome bigger obstacles before. Success could hinge on one or two factors or players. This is the pep talk I am also using to deal with the rumor that Disney and Lucasfilm may be reducing their output of live-action Star Wars shows.

Disney/Lucasfilm are reportedly reducing their output of live-action Star Wars shows on Disney+ to 1 per year starting in 2025.

In comparison, 2022 featured 3 live-action Star Wars shows pic.twitter.com/wKCBpgF4e7

10 of the best characters from the last 10 years of Star Wars
Image
If I were to make this list before the release of the sequel trilogy, I would have had a hard time narrowing it down. After all, who would win in a fight, General Rieekan or Admiral Piett? Do I root for Corran Horn or Myn Donos as my favorite X-wing pilot? In this list, I'm just looking at the ten characters from the Disney era who have become my favorites.

Here are 10 of the best Star Wars characters from the last 10 years.

1. Doctor Aphra Doctor Aphra from "Star Wars: Doctor Aphra" by Alyssa Wong

We first met this morally complex character in the 2016 Vader Down comic as a foil for Darth Vader, but she eventually gained her own spin-off series. Creator Kieron Gillen said in an interview with StarWars.com, "My description originally was, imagine Indiana Jones, how he goes about problems in that ramshackle kind of [way], but with his ethics inverted.
